Let's be real here, the first sixty seconds is the first sixty seconds of Up! We're just missing the flying house and... ya know, it making any sense past that.
The animation at the beginning of the movie looks so good ,why didn't they just made Doolittle into an animated movie and still have RDj voice the character, but now in animation. That would have made the movie less ridiculous and little bit more palatable.
crackpot theory: it was supposed to be an animated movie but they changed it and thats why so much of the movie is voiceover hidden mouth weirdness not true for many reasons, but an interesting idea
@@plasmaoctopus1728 To be honest, the animation to me kinda look like cel-shaded CGI animation stylized to look like they're traditionally hand-drawn similar to Enter The Spiderverse, which of course would still be a better medium than talking "realistic" CGI animals.
I feel like this movie was literally made with the hope that people would go see it just because Iron Man died in Endgame and they wanted to see RDJ again.
Thing is, a lot of actors do this. Film Brain talked about it years ago in his review of Strange Wilderness. To paraphrase, actors will take easy jobs to decompress after tough and demanding roles. See Eddy Redmayne. Les Mis, the Theory of Everything . . . then Jupiter Ascending and a Thomas the Tank Engine movie. Consider that RDJ didn't just come off playing A movie or even A series but a years-long transformation of himself and the character he was playing. In that light, doesn't Dolittle being a scatterbrained layabout with an adventurous past that he's glad to have over kind of make sense?
The sad part (okay, there are a lot of em) is that there is a good story here. Character loses his wife, is depressed and exiled himself from society, but is called to save the life of someone who he owes. There’s a legit set up for a good story. I’ll even admit that the animals make okay characters... most of them anyway. Actually, the more I think about it why wasn’t the girl the main character of this movie? Seriously, she had far more personality and was the most memorable character.
I don't see how having a little girl remind him of his wife is a good idea that isn't just pedophilic. And you can just as easily say that the boy reminds him of himself ect. But maybe it'd be fine.
@@DSan-kl2yc You misunderstand what I'm saying. I get what you mean by 'pedophilic' if it was purely because she was a girl and looked similar to his wife. But that's not what I was meaning in terms of 'reminding him of his wife'. I've seen movies where a character is reminded of someone they loved through a child or even grown up that never came off as 'pedephilic' or anything in that nature. The girl in the movie, while not entirely done well, had courage and excitement for things, especially for Doolittle's world. I'm talking about her character traits that could be revealed as similar to Lily's but yet also different. Doolittle maybe reminded of her through her but he'll only see her as a child he and Lily could have had and feel responsible for her.

Indeed. A story about a gifted doctor who served the queen, found his lover, only to tragically lost her at one point of their adventure should be a decent enough plot for a fantasy movie. Dolittle was barely even presented as a character who had a change of heart after recuperating from the loss of his wife and curing the queen (which was motivated by him not wanting to lose his house) so why did they even bother establishing a detailed backstory only to have it followed by a generic "Find the plot device treasure" storyline?
My first thought after that dragon scene was to make an image of Tony holding the gauntlet, saying "I am Iron Man", then cutting to Dolittle fisting the dragon. I can't bring myself to do it.

After all, she's trying to keep her son, who is dying of a respiratory disease, safe by keeping him isolated and indoors!!! It's the ultimate 'shelter in place' triumph movie!
The animation was beautiful. The movie probably would've been a hit if the whole movie had been that. And I doubt it would have cost more. It's obviously not hand-drawn. It's CGI and 90% of the movie seems to be CGI anyway.
@@MandleRoss Not only the animation, but I feel that the origin story would've been a more interesting concept, like an old-school, Disney-esque movie.
Talking animals, celebrity cameos, a journey around the world, barely makes sense... This is really the cinematic version of that Lil' Dicky Earth song, isn't it ?
Dog: And that's coming from the guy who loves the smell of butts DoLittle: Oh, you do love butt. Me: I'm not sure for what reason I laughed at that or even if I should.
Please review "mandy" it is one off the most insane movies ever and yet is so kick ass. Oh and it has Nick Cage fighting a whole cult by himself. I know this just might sound like me wishing but as soon as I saw this movie I knew it was just perfect for you
It is a joke. The donkey also wasn't the one from that controversy. And it would be kind of amazing if they would make movie about him. Especially in context of his relations with OG MLP's.
RDJ: I'm going to make some new movies, I'm done with Marvel, I am no longer Iron Man. *Dolittle flops like a dying fish out of water* RDJ: .....I am Iron Man.
11:45 Good job noticing Disney's recent live action trends, they've been annoying me lately. Girl = sweet and ravishingly innocent with a pure heart of gold (Cinderella, Aurora in Malificent, the witches in Wrinkle in Time, girl in Dumbo, this girl in Doolittle). And if it's a youngish Male = constantly amazed and smiling at everything he sees ...aside from praising the female lead that is literally his only role (Calvin in Wrinkle in Time, Bert from Mary Poppins, this dude in Doolittle). I mean, for some reason Disney nails having interesting characters in their animated films! But they think the live action versions have to be wispy and waiflike with no discernable personality in order to achieve that "fairytale effect."
What's weirder is apparently Downey was the one who made that idea. Like after the movie came out I was recommended an article through Google that talked about it... Like what?
Yeah like have an interesting twist where the Dragon isn’t violent and is a complete nervous wreck because his or her partner was killed by a knight years ago, it would be interested to see the typical “knight slays a monster guarding a legendary mcguffin” be seen from the monsters point of view where it’s just doing a job and didn’t deserve to get slaughtered for it
When it comes to movies like this, it really makes me wonder “who made it so bad”. As in, was it the director? Did all the managers give so many edits to highlight their clients that it turned the movie into such a chop shop? Was it the studios? Were the actors just off or were they rushed? Etc
just because the director did a great job with the effects and characters doesnt mean the script isn't shit. it's an amalgam of everyone's work and can end up as a dumpster fire or interstellar gold. the director though has more control than the writer.
10:53 "You get the feeling someone ripped the script into a million pieces" Actually, that's exactly what happened in one instance. The writer for The Lego Batman Movie showed his rewrite to Robert Downey, Jr., and Downey tore it to shreds in favor of "new ideas." Seriously, look it up.
It doesn't seem to be that bad. But then again, I only saw some scenes uploaded months after release so what say do I have in the matter? Edit: Ok, after seeing this review, I realize the movie is a mediocre, sloppy mess but at least the cgi is good.
Holy hell that is the single worst Welsh accent I've ever heard. I mean I'm Welsh and it took me up to when he said "boyo" to even realize what accent he was failing so horribly at.
Having not seen Dolittle, I cannot tell you how many of the shots shown from the film were shots I thought you guys had manipulated. Especially the squirrel “revenge” scene. Dolittle must be that bad.
Yeah, it was pretty infamous for being a bomb, a critical failure, and only receiving a best picture nomination thanks to extensive campaigning. That phrase kind of shocked me when he said that. Also, wasn’t it was made by 20th Century Fox, not Disney?
What about this: the movie could’ve been an origin story about Doolittle, including lily and how he met the animals, rather then this dumpster fire. Oh and it would all be animated ( in what I believe is rotoscope, but I could be wrong).
Doctor Strange: I've looked through every possible future movie you could star in. Robert Downey Jr: How many are good? Doctor Strange: I'll have to keep looking.
The fact that both Lady Rose and Jip the dog were both set up in the beginning and then sidelined for the rest of the film extremely irked me. I mean, all Lady Rose did was cry by the Queen's bedside, and Jip was probably the most useful animal apart from Polly yet HE'S the one who gets left behind. I mean, if you're gonna have Tom Holland voice a talking dog that belongs to RDJ, then you better deliver for God's sakes!!!!!!
@@KarstensCreationsKC Okay, you changed the word from hit to classic, meaning saying, "a hit in the 60's" is factually wrong and a "classic today," would be subjectively correct
My husband and I just watched the review and just thought that animated section should have been the whole movie. It probably would have done better if it was completely animated and told the origins of Dr. Dolittle and how he found his wife. This movie seems like a unnecessary sequel.
I cringed so hard at the "good dog" line... I know Hollywood likes to animate every animal like a dog for some reason, but a freakin' polar bear, "good dog"?
That tells how lazy the writing is in this And that damn Godfather reference....why?! That has no context and this movie takes place before Godfather happened Ugggh...
I like to think that this is tony stark and that he ended up in this movie after dying from killing thanos, but he loses his memory, his armor and gains the ability to talk to animals.
God everytime the narrator speaks all i hear is. "and so kratos, tempered by his vengence, when to mount olympus to seek his revenge against the gods themselves"
Let's see the positive aspect of this movie. Between that and him leaving the MCU, RDJ will surely make the third Sherlock Holmes just to recover from this.
RDJ in 2019: Hey, watch me as I say goodbye to the most iconic character of my career in the most-anticipated comic book movie of all time. RDJ in 2020: Hey, watch me in this horribly imagined reboot of a mediocre franchise that nobody asked for.
I feel kinda sad that unlike Chris Evans, RDJ didn’t jump to a film that would be quite successful and beloved and could potentially be seen as a cult classic...
@bigevilworldwide1 I didn't like the last Jedi either. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy his other films. Knives out was good and Chris Evans was good in it.
For ten years I was sure that my late cat had the most green eyes out of all regular housecats, but now I see that Chaplin beats her in that category. Look at those pieces of emerald!
Saddest thing about Endgame is I know I won’t only see Tony Stark ever again, but I’ll never see Robert Downey Jr. either, cause lord knows I’m not paying for this...unless there’s a Tropic Thunder 2, then I’ll be there opening night.
The advertising for this movie was OUT there, man When I worked in a grocery store two years ago, I saw ads for this on cereal boxes in the organic isle. On crappy off brand cereal like... "Monkey-O's", "Sugar Parrots" and "Cinnamon Flakes"
I like the original movie the best, because it makes me believe he can actually talk to the animals due to the fact that they don’t put voices to them to let us understand them.
Dr. Dolittle from 1967 staring Rex Harrison as the leading roll is the only version where the animals don’t actually talk, where as ALL the ones w/Eddie Murphy, ‘Dolittle’s daughter,’ & now Robert Downey Jr. have given the animals voices so that we too can understand them. The whole point of both the original movie & it’s book of origins was that no one but Doolittle could understand the animals (audience or Reader-unless someone wants to correct me on the book part, it’s been a while since I’ve read it).
Iron Man: *Snaps his fingers and sees a glimpse of Dolittle as his afterlife.* Also Iron Man: No.... no, wait.... wait a minute. I take it back! I TAKE IT BACK! I DON’T WANNA GO!!!!!
Oh my god Tommy managed to not look whimsical or enchanted by what's happening. At least for a short while. By the way the facial expression of Junior while he was drowning is the most hilarious reaction to a potential death ever potrayed on screen.
What are you on about? The pandemic had nothing to do with the film bombing. Also, how much money it made doesn't exactly reflect how much it needed to be profitable.
Box office grosses were already at their lowest point in decades. People are getting tired of going through the hassle of going out to the theater when there are now so many home entertainment options. Sure, you still have big event movies like "Endgame" that make tons of money, but those are the exception.
I can't help but think that when the Critic's talking about RDJ's pre-Iron Man career, he's forgetting about the Oscar nomination RDJ got for Chaplin or the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes movies (which technically count because the first one came out earlier in 2008 than Iron Man 1 did).
Is Doug aware that the film was produced by the same guy who produced Burton's Alice in Wonderland movies, the Maleficent movies, and directed Christmas with the Kranks?
I feel like this is the first time I heard the NC call Jim Broadbent “Jim Broadbent” and not “The British Guy that Seems to Be in Everything But You Never Really Take the Time to Learn What His Name is”
I saw this at my local drive in as a double feature (the other movie was call of the wild, oh my god, it was shit) and honestly, I would 100% rewatch this with a friend purely for Michael Sheen’s performance. The man emanates this bonkers, looney energy here that I just adore.

*After Avengers: Endgame*

Having dolittle help the dragon with the pain of losing a lost one would have been so good but ffs why a fart joke? It is so infuriating.
It'd have been better to be an egg. :c
What's weirder is apparently Downey was the one who made that idea. Like after the movie came out I was recommended an article through Google that talked about it... Like what?
Yeah like have an interesting twist where the Dragon isn’t violent and is a complete nervous wreck because his or her partner was killed by a knight years ago, it would be interested to see the typical “knight slays a monster guarding a legendary mcguffin” be seen from the monsters point of view where it’s just doing a job and didn’t deserve to get slaughtered for it
Additional missed opportunity: Cat named Chaplin... reviewing an RDJ movie... RDJ played Charlie Chaplin in the movie, Chaplin.
COME ON!
What do you want to bet that the writer(s) didn't even know that he was Chaplin or that movie even exists? 😂
When it comes to movies like this, it really makes me wonder “who made it so bad”. As in, was it the director? Did all the managers give so many edits to highlight their clients that it turned the movie into such a chop shop? Was it the studios? Were the actors just off or were they rushed? Etc
It's often a synthesis of all/most of the above.
All of this plus the studio wanting to make money with the most cheap (creatively) way plus bad writing
just because the director did a great job with the effects and characters doesnt mean the script isn't shit. it's an amalgam of everyone's work and can end up as a dumpster fire or interstellar gold. the director though has more control than the writer.
Apparently, it was the first director the movie had. I read in another comment how he was batshit insane
In the words of a better movie:
"Where's the...."
*DRAGON!*

10:53 "You get the feeling someone ripped the script into a million pieces"
Actually, that's exactly what happened in one instance. The writer for The Lego Batman Movie showed his rewrite to Robert Downey, Jr., and Downey tore it to shreds in favor of "new ideas." Seriously, look it up.
Oh so that’s why Chaplin was moody in the advertising, lol. (Ironically, Downey played Charlie Chaplin)
Aside from Ironman & maybe the Sherlock Holmes movies, that was the only other movie I liked RDJ in. (mostly because I'm a Charlie Chaplin fan lol)

It doesn't seem to be that bad. But then again, I only saw some scenes uploaded months after release so what say do I have in the matter?
Edit: Ok, after seeing this review, I realize the movie is a mediocre, sloppy mess but at least the cgi is good.
