“Poppy goes to Branch to ask for help who it looks like has spent years preparing an underground bunker. Who’s crazy now? No really, who’s crazy now? In this day & age this almost sounds rational.” *Oh, you went there.*
With how much toilet paper, water, food, and other necessities are bought as well as how little is left behind for people who can barely afford it I don't believe Branch is wrong in being prepared. Although in his case he can go overboard.
Dreamworks filmography can be summed up in that one line from Road to El Dorado: "On the one hand, gold! On the other hand, painful, agonizing failure"

@TearingMeApartLisa As much as I hate Illumination, at least I already know that their work is typically mediocre and forgettable fluff, so I don't really bother with their work and wouldn't be surprised by their movies being crap. With Dreamworks, it's like they end up betraying my trust half the time because on the one hand, they can make amazing and passionate projects like The Prince of Egypt, the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, the Kung Fu Panda movies, Spirit, and Rise of the Guardians but on the other hand, they turn up either mediocre movies like Madagascar 3 or absolute shit like Trolls, Shark Tale, or Boss Baby. It's like they can't choose to be passionate as much as they should be able to and I have to be extremely careful when watching their library. Pixar are not perfect everytime, but they do at least care about the movies they make and they are more consistent with their film quality than Dreamworks has ever been and if they don't improve their quality consistency, they won't ever reach the levels of Pixar, Disney, Laika, or even Studio Ghibli.
@TearingMeApartLisa That wasn't me saying that Illumination is better because believe me, they're far worse imo. Dreamworks does take risks and I like that, but my point is that if Dreamworks does have the creativity, passion, and capability of putting emotion and good writing into their works, then why can't they do that on a more consistent basis? Why do they decide to do the bare minimum and pander to little kids half the time when they have shown that they're more than able to make their films for everyone like some of their good movies I listed?
I was genuinely annoyed when Poppy invited Everyone into Branch’s bunker. It was HIS bunker. It might help everyone, but it was Not theirs to take. They put Themselves at risk and only he tried to construct defenses for when they inevitably put Him in danger, then steal his safety too! It’s like if a community ate all their food, then went after the person who rationed their supplies and then also left that person with nothing..
Agreed! And while I do think Poppy wanted to help her people, her main reason was forcing Branch to come with her on this quest that is solely her idea and extremely dangerous by making him extremely uncomfortable, which is...not a great lesson for kids lol.
What’s also freakin’ annoying is that the problems caused in both movies are usually Poppy’s fault. Chef finding the Trolls, Barb discovering where the Pop Trolls, the Country Trolls throwing them in jail, the Yodel Trolls capturing her and giving Barb the magic string. Literally a good number of bad things that have happened in the movies is because of Poppy... and all of it could have been easily avoided if she listened to Branch who was right 99% of the time.
Actually, in a scene before Poppy knocked at Branch's door we can see said Branch looking at all of the scrapbook cards Poppy has made for him in the past and chuckles to it, showing he still appreciates that she's the only one who at least thinks of inviting him despite knowing he won't come
1337azaltuth I laughed when he called Cooper a “giraffe troll.” Always saw him as some sort of llama for some reason. Maybe it’s because llamas are shaggy compared to giraffes
As fine as Trolls is as some harmless fun, Kubo should have gotten its reception and treatment. I watched it via library DVD. You can see every second they put into the animation and performances. But no, 80's toys singing old pop songs for the win. Gotcha.
I’ll admit, when I first saw this movie and Branch said “Singing killed my grandma, okay?!” I laughed because it was just random and came out of nowhere. It would have been better if there was some buildup to it instead of just randomly throwing that line in at what should’ve been an emotional moment. It was as if the directors were like: Director 1: “oh we need an emotional backstory for this character!” Director 2: “What about killing off his parents?” Director 1: “No, Disney already do too much of that.” Director 2: “Okay. What about killing off his grandma instead?” Director 1: “Eh f**k it. Just put it in and we’ll call it a day.”
Honestly I felt like it did build up to that. Clearly he'd suffered something traumatic to make him so paranoid about singing and partying. Losing his grandmother to singing made complete sense. That was buildup to that. What more buildup is needed? Do we need a series of Flashbacks to his grandmother and us pretending that we didn't immediately assume she died?
A little behind the scenes info. That Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle joke at the end, was actually inspired by the fans. Doug and Rub was doing a livestream Podcast on Twitch and the fans suggested he try and do the Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle joke but couldn't figure out how to do it cause of the quarantine and was considering to forget it. But, someone mentioned having NC say it and Jim would just know that he did at his house and say it outloud anyway. So, way to go fans, you just helped make an NC joke happen
I loved "Rise of the Guardians", I didn't see "Sinbad" but I still haven't seen the original Lion King, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Tarzan, Cinderella, Aladin, or the remakes because if I haven't seen the original why would I see the remake
@@intrestsofthemind612 I much prefer Megamind to movies like Boss Baby, and I still have no idea why Despicable Me and Minions became a bigger franchise than that movie.
@@sebastianemond5313 Because Despicable Me came out first (July 2010, Megamind came out October 2010) and had a similar villain-to-hero plot. I much prefer Megamind to Despicable Me. The first one was great, honestly, but Megamind is still better.
I literally didn't even try to hold in the laugh. He didn't edit it that way, it genuinely happened like that. My 12-year-old cousin told me off, saying "it isn't funny! It's really sad!"
When he said singing killed my grandma, I busted out laughing. I still don’t know why I did that it just...took me completely by surprise. I mean it had some dark tones leading up to that point, but that was such a weird whiplash moment, I could not help but laugh.
CrazyWarriorCatLady just the delivery and wording were so weird ?? like such a random arrangement of words that i don’t think anyone would have guessed, and the tone was so serious i couldn’t help but chuckle as well
@@PeninsulaPaintings I think it was. Whether or not it worked, I think they were going for something that would be sad for the characters but also absurd enough not to make the scene a major shift in tone.
Singing killed my grandma was like "damn" moment for a little sec then they were singing in the background and it ruined that moment, but I did snicker from that because it was the only death in the movie that wasn't you felt it coming kind of way.
If anything that bit where the Trolls are reacting to Branch’s dark backstory by singing shows the fundamental problem with the Trolls, they’re too positive and have to constantly distract themselves from actual problems with fun songs and dances
I watched this movie with my toddler nephew when it came out and "BECAUSE SINGING KILLED MY GRANDMA" has been my favorite movie line of all time ever since.
@@georgedawson5621 I don't remember him reacting much at all. To be fair he was only like 2 or 3 so it probably didn't make a lot of sense to him. Either way, I was definitely more focused on that line than my nephew for a minute there.
I busted out laughing at the whole “singing killed my grandma!” When I first saw this. Not because of the tone difference, but because it’s SO cliched, I couldn’t believe they went with that. It reminded me of the Robot Chicken skit where Bruce Willis played a cop who had to team with a pair of pants to solve a crime, but they didn’t get along at first because, and I quote, “a pair of pants killed my uncle!” It’s so cliche that it’s literally a joke now, but the fact they did it and did it seriously made me laugh at the absurdity.
The most hilarious version of this cliché was "Go fly a kite!" "*gasp!* You know my [insert relative] was electrocuted when he was flying a kite!" Or some such thing. It was something my room-mate was watching when I walked by the livingroom. I'm not a movie quote master, but I am too lazy to Google while watching/commenting on a YT video
One of the biggest problems to branch’s backstory, is that it doesn’t really come back in any way. So basically it feels like branch was talking out of his ass.
18:21: NC: Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle! Jim: F yeah Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle! Me: The Nostalgia Critic: Bringing back his old nostalgia (from 2007 to 2012) since 2020!
You know, I didn’t hate this movie. It got some genuine laughs from me and there were some creative things I really liked about it. But there were a few things that really annoyed me about it and one stood head and shoulders above the rest. The introverted loner Branch, like in _every other fucking movie_ with a character like that, was portrayed as being wrong about being an introverted loner because apparently that’s not a thing you can be in a movie without there being something broken about you.
Branch wasn’t portrayed as being wrong. The whole first half of the movie was about how Branch was right and Poppy was wrong. The second half does the reverse. It tries to have emotional balance, showing the strengths and weaknesses of the different emotional states.
@@alexandergreene461 And got over it thanks to song! Just like in the real world! Everything can be cured if you just sing the pain away with terrible covers! (Looking at you "lullaby" song..fucking hell) Don't give the movie that much credit they didnt give him PTSD they made him moody and disliking songs because his grandmother died nothing more nothing less.
@@bibbobella He wasn't moody or disliked things. He was paranoid cause of his past and knew if it happened to him it could happen to everyone else so he was trying to help them. He became the opposite of them cause he was the reason his grandmother was taken and eaten. If he truly was moody and disliked all that stuff the movie would have him being forced to go along.
First one: the 3d animation started to get popular that nobody give a damm about 2d anymore. Second one: i guess while the style and story looked family friendly in the trailers the ideas and themes about the film were somewhere deep and serious that i don't little kids would understand. Its just a theory from me.
Sinbad deserves its obscurity. The protagonist is a dirty coward whose turnaround comes out of nowhere, the main conflict is resolved on a technicality, and the lead female leaves her career and loving fiance for a life of thievery with said coward.
@@kimifw58 Simbad (the character) is awsome , the action was kick-ass and he did not get off on a tehnicality. Eris asked him if he would go back to Prodius even if he dose not get the book to which Simbad says "yes". Eris calls him a liar but its proven to be true by the actions of Simbad after he fails to get the book .
NG C.A.M. This movie’s ability to be silly and serious at the same time is amazing. Personally my favorite line is “I’m so sorry Branch. I just assumed you had a terrible voice.” Due in no small part to the impeccable delivery.
I can not for the life of me explain why but having Jim come back at the end just to say "Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle" again made me unnaturally happy. There may be something to this now all these years later.
Before I watch the review I want to say: The movie is is no way ground-breaking. I think there was one original song? The music they did use was relevant for it's particular scene, and not a hodge-podge of "2016's Most Popular". As an artist though, the visuals are STELLAR. I love the textures in the Troll's forest and the grim grime in in the Burgen's town. Is it cute and fun? Yes! Was it visually interesting? YES! Was is ground breaking? No. It's a good "feel good" movie.
As a former film design student, I wholeheartedly agree with the charming animation, but I'm not sure what you mean by 'relevant for it's particular scene'. Is there even a music scene for children? It kinda hurts me physically to see good songs pushed through a pop filter to make a quick buck off some kids, which makes the emotional dissonance in some scenes simply jarring.
@@Ananasbringer By "relevant for it's particular scene" I meant that each song suits it's particular scene very well. The remix of "Move Your Feet" / "D.A.N.C.E." / "It's a Sunshine Day" perfectly encapsulates the fun and care-free nature of the Trolls. "True Colors" suited the "reawakening" of Poppy's colors and an adorable little love song for Branch. The music was wisely chosen, not a hot-mess of 2016's "greatest hits", which is something Illumination would make bank off of but I'm glad Dreamworks chose music relevant to each scene.
@@iSkeleton Alright, my mistake assuming you meant music scenes when it were the movie scenes instead xD Althought, it's not that the choice is bad per sé, it just didn't leave any emotional impact on me and felt more like too much on the nose with the scene selection
16:18 apparently the sequel is going to expand on that as we learn that its a funk troll as trolls in this universe are divided into tribes based on a genre of music. The one we've been following in the first movie are the pop trolls. Some of the other tribes have abnormal anatomy. The techno trolls look like sea angels (the mollusks) and the country western trolls seem to be centaurs.
Yeah, but the “I ate my grandma!” Line was a line said as a joke, the “Singing killed my grandma!” Line was supposed to be serious, but was too ridiculous to be taken seriously.
Gonna be honest? This movie is a guilty pleasure. It's cute, colorful, the songs are fun and there are some scenes that I can't help but laugh at. Like Branch silently yeeting Poppy's guitar into the fire.
One of favorite scenes, is when Branch finds out Creek betrayed them. Poppy stops Branch from choking him, but Creek admits he is betraying them. Poppy chokes him. Creek wasn't her boyfriend, but her crush and figure out he is lowlife was bad but funny.
@Caleb Mayfield Yes, Creek was her crush. I am unsure if Creek returned her feelings, but according to the series, Creek considered Poppy his friend. There is a speculation with one scene in the film, when Creek betrayed them, that he expressed very passionately to Poppy that "he was doing this for her," while holding her cheek and gazing at her in a look that meant he considered her more than just a friend. Creek's feelings are a mystery whether he truly loved Poppy or was just with her because she was a princess ( which came with perks) still remains unknown. We do know naturally that Branch truly loves her and puts his life on the line for Poppy, something Creek never did.
I love this movie. The textures of the animation is incredible, Branch is hilarious and awesome, the songs are catchy, Lady GlitterSparkles is great, and it has decent morals with the "Happiness comes from within" thing.
“This is a cult” I’ve been holding that in for the 4 years and finally somebody said it for me. Edit: wow I CANNOT believe that I got so many likes!! Ty
One thing to also consider: The sequel apparently has the infinity strings. so there’s that to worry about. And while Branch is portrayed in the beginning as paranoid in the beginning it’s more that he knows that if they make too much noise they’ll be caught, which is what happens. There were a few jokes in it that I did find myself laughing at mostly involving Branch being (justifiably) angry at somebody. And I will not get over the dark humor that goes on in the “get up again” song.
It was platonic. They are not a couple in the series nor at the beginning of the sequel. I mean, Branch probably wasn’t being platonic, but nobody ever listens to Branch (except my toddler daughter who might be in love with him, he’s her favorite everything.)
My God, I looked it up after reading your comment and the damn thing is even more terrifying than the one in the movie! Don't tell Doug to google that, the poor guy will be traumatised!
I have this vision of Doug looking up the Giraffe Troll, then that 'DUN DUN DUUUUUN' music plays, followed by the clip of the Nostalgia Critic's reaction to Jake Lloyd in his Jingle All The Way review, when he screams and runs off screen and you hear him jump through a window and fall from a great height before hitting the ground! Followed by 'My God, what a tall building!' I'm not a video maker, but if someone made that it'd make me laugh!
Should we tell the Critic that the Russell Brand Troll didn't die since he turns up in the Netflix series? Correction, should we tell him there's a Netflix series?
I really liked the 'Get Back Up Again' segment, not only is it an original song, but there's personality to it and it feels like an authentic musical number that captures the spirit of a Trolls movie. I'm also a big fan of the visuals during the song. I love how stylized the universe is, the creature designs are pretty creative, everything has this felt-like texture to it and overall feels like a fun adventure! 😄
@@ajthomas1781 he also forgot to mention that part at branch’s house where all the trolls were hugging branch and the king yells “hug time! In his underwear. you know for kids
@@AnInsideJoke I didnt even know they'd covered it until this review, I'd avoided the movie that hard. Those cynical producers...the bastards....*plays the Disturbed cover* OK, better now.
Yes it was not a good idea to include a Gorillaz song into a sickeningly sweet kids’ film, but at the same time it does kinda represent how the Bergans are living in a depressed state without eating a single Troll. I mean, it’s kinda like using the Trolls as a metaphor for drugs. A Family Picture!
I’m going to be honest when I read sometimes I zone out and can’t hear anything, and before I know it an hour has past. So Branch getting lost in the music is kind of believable
I don't know why. If you've ever had a loved one die, you would know that oftentimes we blame ourselves irrationally. Obviously he wasn't responsible, but in his mind it made perfect sense. I felt bad for him.
Those giraffe troll toys are the literal embodiment of suffering. Not only to you, but to themselves. They look like they would be screaming “KILL ME” if they could.
The movie starts off with "we get eaten by Bergens" so gonna have to disagree with the whole "dark elements out of nowhere" thoughts. I'm not saying the movie's super complex I mean I kind of feel like it could potentially be seen as a "who needs Xanax have you tried just being happy" message but for the most part it's enjoyable. It was amusing and clearly the "traveling together so must be a couple by the end" trope was there. Seriously most movies where two opposites attract characters have less development than they did. They at least made her take shit more seriously and him take stuff less seriously both finding a happy middle ground. How many other movies are just "boom now they're a couple" I'll be the first to admit that some of the movies I like are considered high end art and others are considered trash. I think they're all just good movies.
Okay so my daughter is a toddler and thus I am somewhat of an expert on Trolls now, having seen the movie hundreds of times and all 7 seasons of the show at least as much. Branch and Poppy are NOT a couple by the end of the movie, in fact it’s a plot point in the sequel. When he says “That’s why I love you” she took it platonically. (At least my head canon is that afterwards she lightly shot him down since they’re definitely not a couple in the series or at the beginning of the sequel, and in fact they’re barely really friends. Poppy is an asshole to Branch on many occasions and I think he could do much better than her borderline emotional abuse.) Also please save me I have spent way too much time thinking about Trolls.
Being a recovering addict from a town with many other addicts, I really appreciated the theme of Trolls. You don't need to eat or take something to feel happy.
That ad in the middle is literally how my boss wishes he could talk to people. And how he feels talking to people. Him: Important info said at hyperspeed Listener: duhhhhhh
icecream hero Well yeah I was gonna say, Inside Out was a kid’s movie and handled emotional issues way better than this one did, I think kids movies can be fun AND smart
I agree. That is such a poor message to send out to kids and one that would piss off people who deal with depression. You can't just say "Stop being so depressed!" because it doesn't work like that. Inside Out is much smarter movie that teaches people that it's not healthy to be just happy all the time and that you need sadness as well as the other emotions to fully function as a human being. It teaches kids that it's okay to feel sad and that emotion can be helpful in situations that's called for.
@@Swiftest_sketches I took the message less literally as in, "you can't consume your way to true happiness." In western society, a lot of people try to buy happiness by spending money on luxuries. Those often give you a quick rush of happiness but it quickly fades. I think the movie was trying to say, "external things don't give you long term happiness. You need interpersonal relationships and self satisfaction for that."
This is nitpicky and not something Doug would necessarily know without reading the synopsis for the sequel, but Branch and Poppy don't actually end up as a couple in this one. It's hinted at (I personally didn't even catch it the first time), but doesn't become an actual plot point until World Tour.
May Page which is such a cop out. Sure true relationships are a slow burn and this film more shows the beginning of one than a resolution but to say there was nothing between them feels like a retcon.
THANK YOU! It was actually really funny. And really dark and morbid too. I bet they put it in for the parents. Imagine the kids asking: "Mom, is that Clown Troll dead?"".
I only got interested in Trolls after hearing that the McElroy brothers wanted to be in the second film. They even started a podcast where they detailed how much work they put into getting a part(or parts). I'm still not 100% sure if they were being sincere in their desire to be part of the film, or if it was a sarcastic jab at the idea.

Sinbad and Rise of the Guardians are genuinely good movies. I don't get why they did so poorly.
First one: the 3d animation started to get popular that nobody give a damm about 2d anymore.
Second one: i guess while the style and story looked family friendly in the trailers the ideas and themes about the film were somewhere deep and serious that i don't little kids would understand. Its just a theory from me.
@@motor4X4kombat Yeah, I don't buy that last one.
And it kills off Russell Brand!
@@iSkeleton Alright, my mistake assuming you meant music scenes when it were the movie scenes instead xD

I love the design of the world and creatures, every thing looks like a whatnot muppet
I love this movie. The textures of the animation is incredible, Branch is hilarious and awesome, the songs are catchy, Lady GlitterSparkles is great, and it has decent morals with the "Happiness comes from within" thing.

It teaches kids that it's okay to feel sad and that emotion can be helpful in situations that's called for.
it was more if your not happy other people can help you not be sorta
@@Swiftest_sketches I took the message less literally as in, "you can't consume your way to true happiness."
In western society, a lot of people try to buy happiness by spending money on luxuries.
Honestly with how it was shown a person could easily mistake they got together
Yeah I thought they got together too
May Page which is such a cop out. Sure true relationships are a slow burn and this film more shows the beginning of one than a resolution but to say there was nothing between them feels like a retcon.
Even then World Tour was just resolving some issues they had in their friendship before Branch could reveal that he liked Poppy.

They actually address that in the second movie. Its funny how NC brought that up.
I guess whenever he reviews world tour he can bring that up.
This is the perfect movie for people who take acid
+ry ag Noted
Lol
I saw Trolls: World Tour early and if the first movie was just a sip of alcohol, World Tour is acid and cocaine
They enter the 4th dimension
what's acceptable to take while watching cats 2019? my sister watched it high in theaters while i watched it like a normal person
Stamps.com in 2019: No money
Stamps.com in 2020: Stonks
Too bad so much mail is sent by small businesses that Stamps.com is screwed regardless
5:31 I swear this is the funniest joke in the movie.
I think Branch had a grudge against that clown.
Tanner Price Maybe the clown killed his other Grandma.
THANK YOU! It was actually really funny. And really dark and morbid too. I bet they put it in for the parents. Imagine the kids asking: "Mom, is that Clown Troll dead?"".
The “dOn’T gO oUtSiDe!!!!!” Got me 😂😂👌
I fully admit that as a man in his late 30's, Trolls is a guilty pleasure for me.
@Mr New Vegas Not in THAT way... (discreetly closes a few tabs on my web browser)
I’m 26 and I thought it was fun to watch haha
"That is why every Meg Ryan film ends in a killing spree" Most hilarious line ever
if only...
Congratulations! Your comment has no value!
12:09 omg we were in the theater freaking out and kids didn’t get why we were dying in our seats
When I watched Trolls 2 and saw that there were different types of trolls like the long necked one I was like "well there's your answer Critic"
The Sparkle Sparkle Sparkle joke fits so well with this movie too :D
Who is the guy who responded to the Sparkle Sparkle joke?
Trolls are basically antidepressants for the Bergens. If a Bergen eats one they become happy. xD
I just need to eat a 4chan user if i feel depressed?
@@MinscFromBaldursGate92 Don’t forget Twitter and TH-cam.
"Singing killed my grandma."
