Love your vids. Please do a long term review. I left Altra due to quality (uppers that tore or midsoles that prematurely fell flat). I’m curious how this shoe does after 100 or even 200 miles.
These sound ideal for me, I’m still using the Altra Fwd Exp for my road running, the Via with the nitrogen infused midsole sounds like the perfect upgrade 👌
The Specter 2 is another great shoe and also $160. If I HAD to choose only one pair, it would probably be the Specter 2 only because I could do a few speedier workouts in that shoe as well. Although arguably the FWD VIA makes for a better daily trainer. As for marathons, the Specter 2 would be great if trying to stick to a budget, I also have been really liking the Hoka Mach X 2 for those speedier runs. Hope this helps!
Great review! One critique and I find this with many shoe tubers these days because I think they don't go out and pay for shoes anymore but... saying this should be $130 is out of touch for today's economy. Decent shoes, especially high/max stack shoes do NOT cost $130 anymore... they are $150 at the very least and have been for a bit now. Thanks.
New subscriber! I Like your reviews. How do you think these Altra fwd via compare to the craft pacer (another review of yours I liked) I’m 60 year old male who uses orthotics (need a bit more volume), need roomy toe box due to bunions and look for stable neutral Appreciate your insight
Thank you for subscribing! Both are great shoes. I recently pulled the Pacer's out of the box for another run and they didn't disappoint. I feel that the Altra's have a more refined and comfortable fit in the upper but the Pace is more bouncy underfoot.
Nice Review! How do they compare to the Altra Experience Flow? I found the Experience Flow to be a bit too narrow in the midfoot. I didn't like the upper either. It was too stiff & rigid for my liking. Does this shoe have a soft flexible upper & is it noticeably wider in the mid foot?
I like the Via much more than the flow. It definitely has more room inside the shoe and I found the upper to be more breathable and adaptable compared to the Flow.
Just did a test run in the FWD Via's. Best Altra shoe yet! Your review was spot on! I really wish Altra just stuck to the Original footshape design across all their models. The Standard & Slim shoes are often too narrow & uncomfortable (at least for my wide foot lol). I love the firmness of the midsole, as a heavy weight runner (6'3, 220LB's) I hate the feeling of sinking into a shoe. This shoe should last 400+ miles for sure.
I love the Altra Vanish Tempo for my everyday runs. This however sounds like an interesting alternative. The original FWD is a bit to stiff and hard in the midsole for me, so I'll be checking these out for sure.
Do you have any experience with the Rivera line? I currently love my 3s and looking at the 4 soon, but would be curious if you have a comparison. Other than the mid-sole, which the Rivera just has the boring Ego but it’s been good for me up near 400 miles. Nice vid!
Thank you for watching this video! I don't have any experience in the Rivera line (yet). Compared to the Experience (FWD Experience, Experience Flow, etc.) and the Torin line, the FWD VIA midsole feels much better.
@@SeeChadRun all good! I ran two half marathons this year in my single pair of Rivera 3s and have no reason shift, was just curious. Semi-interested in checking out the drop though.
What can you say about the stride mechanics, compared to an Altra shoe with a zero drop, like the Torin for example? Can you feel the difference? Or is it transparent?
Great job! Increasing your mileage! I haven't ran in the Rivera line up yet so I can't compare them but the FWD VIA does make an ideal long run shoe. Just remember that it has a 4 mm drop and not a 0 mm drop.
Hopefully these don't have the same quality control problems of all the other Altra shoes I've tried to buy over this past year. I'll give these a try but otherwise I've opened my eyes to TOPO Athletic and I'm waiting to try several of their trail and hiking models. I assume by your rating this as Altra's best shoe that you also consider it better than the new Olympus 6, correct? I certainly gave the Olympus 6 a pass - on quality.
The Olympus 6 is for trail running while the FWD VIA is for road running. That said, I don't foresee any quality issues with the VIA despite its simpler and non-overbuilt approach.
There will be a few differences. For example, the Torin 8 will be a zero drop while the FWD VIA will be 4mm drop. They will have similar stack height (30mm in the Torin 8), and I'm not sure if the Torin 8 get's the nitrogen infused midsole (EGO FLO) like in the VIA. Lastly, the Torin 8 retains the standard footshape while the VIA has the wider Original Footshape. Hope that helps! Fingers crossed that Altra will be able to send me a pair of the Torin 8s too.
@denisp8396 I think it'll be a nice upgrade from the previous version and certainly from version 6, but I question if it's enough to really stand out. I guess we'll find out 🙂

Love mine. Ran 20 miles right out the box. Feels like this is good for Long Runs and Easy Runs.
Great feedback! Thank you!
Nice review. Definitely on my list for next show to try.
Hope you enjoy it! Let me know how it works out for you.

Thank you! I'm curious to see how this shoe does after a few hundred miles as well. I'm optimistic about it!
I love all of the fwd altra's. Nitrogen infused upgrade, definitely on my list. I hope they can release a gore tex version of these.
Very good review!

Yah! I think you'll like it.
Yeah the original is to stiff/hard for me. Nice for really easy runs, but they feel inefficient when I pick up the pace a bit.
How would you compare these to the Topo Specter 2, and if you’d choose these for an ultra, which pair would you choose for a regular marathon?
The Specter 2 is another great shoe and also $160. If I HAD to choose only one pair, it would probably be the Specter 2 only because I could do a few speedier workouts in that shoe as well. Very true and great feedback. Thanks for watching!
Have you tried the Topo Atmos? Curious as to how these two compare
I have not tried the Atmos yes, but wouldn't be surprised if these two shoes are very comparable and competitive with one another.
Atmos felt horrible to me

@@SeeChadRun Thanks, I ordered both. Keeping the Altra FWD Via, sending the craft pacer back. (didn't like the floppy upper) great reviews!!

I personally can't tell much of a difference.

How would you compare this to the Rivera? I am looking for something a little softer for my long runs... now that I am getting double digits.

Hows the stability? Would you consider it stable neutral?
More neutral than stable for sure.
Is this shoe good for walking/standing like Ghost Max 1? no running
It's made for running but I think it would do great as a walking and standing shoe too. Very comfortable!
