25 Etiquette Habits Only 5% of People Remember

  • What's your association with the word "etiquette"? Something old-fashioned, like gentlemen in top hats and ladies with teacups in their gloved hands? Well, this picture has nothing to do with modern etiquette habits. If you want to be perceived as a well-mannered, polite, and respected person, you might want to brush up on this topic.
    The thing is, the rules have changed, but we still should follow them in order to not feel awkward. All polite people want to know and observe etiquette rules, especially when some of them aren’t that obvious. For example, if all you want to write in your email is "Thank you!", avoid sending it. You will just clog the recipient's inbox. Yeah, I never knew that, too 🙃.

    SUMMARY:
    In the case of bathroom etiquette, if you see that a stall is closed, don't try to open the door. It may accidentally open, and both you and the person inside will feel extremely embarrassed.
    While applying makeup or combing your hair, use the mirror furthest from the hand dryer. Otherwise, people who only need to dry their hands will have to wait until you finish.
    It's bad manners to use a toothpick at the table. If you know for sure something is stuck between your teeth, go to the bathroom and get rid of it there.
    It's good manners to offer a seat to a pregnant woman. But let's admit, the situation can't get more embarrassing than when you confuse an overweight woman for a pregnant one.
    If you want to take a selfie with someone, you should ask for that person's permission first, even if it's your close friend. You should give them some time to prepare for the photo.
    Avoid wearing clothes with offensive logos and bad words. Some people may perceive such a T-shirt as a joke, but others might get offended.
    When you're in the boarding area at the airport, don't crowd in front of the gate. Also, when claiming your suitcase, step toward the carousel only after you've spotted your bag.
    -Always inform a person that they are on speakerphone, and that there are other people in the room. If you talk to someone on speakerphone at work, find a separate room and close the door.
    While you can send work emails at any time of the day, don't send business-related texts earlier than 1 hour before the work day starts and 2 hours after it finishes.
    If you're dining out with your family or friends, it's absolutely Ok to ask the staff to wrap your leftovers, even if it's a fancy restaurant. But never ask for leftovers after a business lunch or dinner.
    I guess everyone has burned their mouths on spicy food. Instead of breathing through a wide-open mouth or spitting the food out, take a gulp of cold water or other drink. Works like magic every time!

    Some more etiquette rules~
    At a table when eating;
    ~Eat with your mouth closed.
    ~Never put your elbows on the table.
    ~Ask the eldest at the table if you may leave it. (The eldest must also be the one that owns or lives at the house ad well).
    ~Always wait until all members are sitting at the table before you start eating your food.
    ~ Don't talk with your mouth full.
    ~Thank the person who made the meal.

    Here’s some other etiquette rules:
    When sitting at a dinner table,
    1- leave your napkin on your lap. Never wipe
    your month and place on table.
    2- Never talk while your chewing.
    3- If you’re having a steak dinner for example,
    cut the meet as you eat. Never cut more
    than one piece at a time.
    4- Turn your cell phone off and never place
    it on the dinner table.
    5- If your invited to dinner at a restaurant,
    always see what your host orders, then
    order appropriately. If host for example
    orders a $20 dish, don’t order a meal
    that is way more, order something around the same price and desert if
    desert is either ordered by your host or
    your host mentions a favorite desert.

    Here's one from my parents
    When you're dining, especially in a restaurant, put your knife and fork together to indicate you've finished your meal and opposite each other to indicate you're still busy
    Trust me by doing this you'll be making your waitstaff's job a lot easier to do which will also mean better service
    This is common practice of course but I've seen that a lot of people who don't know about so for those of you who don't hope I could help

      You should also turn your fork down while still eating and up when finished . Leave knife and fork extending the plate by at least an inch.

    One important polite habit in my opinion is avoid speak a language someone don’t understand next to this person. And if we speak their native language I believe is polite give it a preference.

    • @ruchas5982

    Nice tips of etiquette. Here's a good one:
    When someone is struggling to open a door, do not be quick to rush in front of them to get inside unless they asked to open the door for you, many Men have been known to do this and other folks do it also,leaving the person still struggling to get the door open for themselves. Some wait and watch until the struggle is over and suddenly grab the door leaving the person holding the door unbalanced to fall backward.

    • @fruitygarlic3601
      @fruitygarlic3601 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. While it's nice to help people out when they're struggling, rushing in front of them can be rude or make their struggle even harder.

    You should never drink water or something while you are walking
    It may affect your Digestive tract.
    Never leave the dining table if you have done with your food, wait for others to finish theirs.

    Please explain the two choices at 1:08. I understand the second (split the bill among 4 people)- you will be well over-paying, but what is the first choice, something about rounding up to a "bigger sum" than what your meal cost? Why not pay what you owe as if you were alone - plus a tip for your meal if customary to pay a tip? Why pay more for the first option?
    In actuality, you would tell your companions that splitting the bill would NOT be fair to you and you will pay for your meal. Etiquette does not mean being a sucker.

    • @mimicrono
      @mimicrono 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand you, I tend to eat little when dining outside, and my part of the bill should be smaller often. But discussing that you want to pay only for your food spoils the good atmosphere and makes you appear as a miser. Tricky situation, this one.

    • @ownpetard8379
      @ownpetard8379 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mimicrono Why wouldn't I ask you to join me for a meal every day? With you at the table, I most likely will get a very good discount on my meal cost. Nothing personal, but that is the flaw with the video's message. Someone has to be pretty desperate for social approval to be willing to split a bill evenly when they clearly have not incurred anything close to equal meal cost.

    When you see a working service dog of any kind, do not touch without asking. These dogs are performing a job, and if you look at, make Kissy faces, or talk to a dog you will disturb them. This will put their person at risk. Even if it just looks like a dog is lying under a table, waiting for a bus etc., any type of disturbance will take their focus of their human, and that it could be dangerous or even deadly. It is OK to ask to say hello if the person is not moving, or is waiting for someone. They have the right however to say no, some dogs even if they are not moving, cannot keep their concentration while they are working if you talk to you or touch them. Do not be offended by this. These dogs are like the steering wheel of our car, and you would never let some random person drive your car without your permission. We are not being rude, we are being safety conscious. Thank you

At the same time a man in his 40s or 50s just entered while she was exiting. I told the little girl thank you while I entered. I think that man was not being a gentleman, since he clearly saw I stepped aside to allow the lady to exit.

    The bathroom doors is not work in my country. Coz the manner is to closed up bathroom door and not open it. Just knock it first, if okay hand the lever (but not sway the door) if no saund, then try to shove it.

    Place the fold of a napkin on your lap away from you and the edges towards your body, so when you lift the top layer of napkin to your mouth, crumbs will slide off away from you to the floor instead of into your lap. Yes, I was actually taught this.

    Actually with the spicy food, you just have to close the mouth and not let air go into. The more air, the more burns.
