Been using Hole 19 for several years. Accurate within accepted limits, very useful range of features, downside is time spent entering details of every shot if you want to get all the data. Playing partners not always happy if I delay my next shot. As a result I don’t save stats on phone but use it purely for yardages and hole overviews - dog legs, hazards etc. basic app is free and well worth a look.

Great review! Worth mentioning that if you have an Apple Watch, it automatically links giving you the info on your wrist! Also it automatically senses a golf swing and tracks your shots, meaning after a round all of your shots are in the app to check the data on!

Used this app for a few years now, automatically adjusts your handicap after each 9/18 holes. I found it drains your battery though if kept on for 18 holes so have bought a power bank to keep it going. Great app

The magic is really in the Apple Watch integration, the subscription version allows you to measure each shot as you play the course, as well as all the other great features mentioned. The only drawback to this is the amount of battery life it uses, the watch must be fully charged or it will be touch and go if you can complete a slow round.

  • @lukebell27
    @lukebell27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The best thing about this app really is the integration with the Apple Watch. Score, yardage and loads more on your watch and you don’t have to get your phone out! Great app and have used it for a couple of years. Also, they do half price on yearly subscriptions quite regularly 👍🏼

I've been using the free version of this app and it's been brilliant. I always play with my phone in my pocket as I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me, so it only makes sense to have the app than buy (a very expensive) extra piece of equipment to get the distances. I've recently paid for the monthly subscription and I love that you can move the marker to wherever you want and see how far hazards are. As a 15 handicapper, it's really helped improve my game. I personally would definitely recommend the app.

In regard to the laser versus the app, I think measuring distances to flags might do more harm than good for amateur golfers. The best function of the app is to identify distance to center of green and aim for that. Any deviation (left, right, long, short) still might stay on where a miss left of a pin on the left side of a green might put you in deep rough or a bunker.

I have been using the pro versions of Golfshot and Hole19 for most of the year. There are things about both that I like and dislike. When my subscription comes up for renewal I'll probably choose just one to renew. I've never used a range finder, but some of my golf buddies do. I've found the distances to be pretty close. Certainly close enough for me to know which club to use. I don't think you can go wrong with Golfshot (or Hole19), plus you get your playing data at your fingertips. Well worth the $ in my opinion. Thanks for the great video!

I've been using free Golfshot for a couple of years when the sight in my left eye started to deteriorate and gauging distances started to become difficult but recently switched to The Grint app, the free version gives you yardages to hazards which Golfshot needs the paid version to do, both versions when compared to my mates expensive Garmin watch proved to be accurate to a yard or so

Got back to golf after 17 years.
Back when I played I just used a course guide🤣
So I didn't want to pay anything for something I never needed before.
But I did download a few apps to try and they worked well but I didn't like that I had to use my phone so I eventually went and bought a garmin s40 that was on sale. Spent 150£ on it. Love it. The yards are just as good to be honest but the main thing I love about it is how much faster and easier it is compared to my phone. I don't walk around on the course holding my phone. But I always have my watch on my arm🤣
And it is much easier keeping the score on the watch since its a quick tap on the watch instead of opening the app and so on.
So the watch is easier to use, quicker to use and I don't need to use my phone and can be "free" from work as you said.
But the app works but a watch is better if you ask me.

Great app, but i have one major concern. I use shotscope and i am supposed to click the watch at every pin so it knows where the hole is. It is the only thing i need to do, but it is still easy to forget. I am not convinced about entering club details after every shot is realistic. But if you can remember to do it and you dont spend ages doing it, or walking back to where you hit the last shot from to enter details to get correct data, then its great. But most people that want stats in this much detail will pay a one off fee for shotscope or arcos etc

I was using the TaylorMade app with Galaxy Watch Active until recently. I really liked the functionality and being free made it great. However, I found it very inconsistent in terms of setting up a round. All too often the watch would just fail to load the course details and I'd end up spending ages trying to get set up. Moved to Galaxy Watch 4, which doesn't work with the TaylorMade app so have moved on to Golf Pad. £26 annual subscription and much easier, reliable set up.

Know what you mean about metres? In the days when only the wealthy had these devices. My mates and I played over on the west coast of Ireland in Clare a decade or so ago. None of us could understand why we kept coming up short? we thought it maybe the strong wind on the links, or perhaps the Guinness? It wasn't until we played another local course, that the pro' told us that the previous course was in metres but theirs was in yards. Even though both were just marked as "Yardage" on the cards. The third course we played had it in both measurements.

I really like the combination of laser and GPS App. It happened too often that my laser was showing a wrong distance to the flag. Just two weeks ago I was on vacation on a golf course I never played before. I was standing in front of a lake. The green was directly behind it. I had no laser and no gps. So I asked the other guy of my fourball if he could measure the distance. He told me his result: 130 yards. I disagreed and asked him to do it again. 130 yards. So I took my PW and went to my ball. I was looking again to the flag and still got big doubts about the distance. I asked him if I could use his laser. After 3 times measuring 130 yards suddenly the new result was 100 yards. I took my SW and shot it on the flag. 😅 The laser is very good in mid distance measuring. Lets say between 180-280 yards. But in longer or very short distances it often focusing for a wrong target. So I always try to use both. First I take a look at the gps. It gives me an idea of the length. And then I laser to the flag. Additional the gps app can tell me the distance of the beginning and the ending of the green. So if I would have to choose only 1 device I would take the app. Its not so precise like a laser can be. But on the other hand it gives you a very good perception of the yardage. Only thing that is absolutely necessary is a good signal! And that’s not always given on a course…

I have noticed that a lot of the UK doesn’t have 4g cover so not sure how useful this would be

This app uses the GPS feature on you phone not cell service for distance information

Trouble with using a phone app exclusively is that many club comps in Oz ban use of mobile phones except for electronic scoring purposes. OK for social golf but to play competitively a ranger finder still needed. Sigh.

Swing U is better and free...i set my phone on my buggy with a power pack connected...my mates all have watches...they are identical and it keeps my scores and handicap calculations..i dont bother anyone with pointing my phone at anything...i can control my music...it has it all..

Hard to trust trackman when a duff apparently goes further than a crisp shot!

Use a sky caddie golf gps. Quick glance and I know where I am. The rest is guff that slows the game down.
