Forest Whitaker's lines from the trailer were very compelling. I kept waiting for him to say them in the movie. "What will you do if they catch you? What will they do if they break you? ... If you continue to fight. What will you become?" That was odd.
To non-fans and people that dont think. Death Star slow moving explosion that makes no sense other than the writers are so shit they dont know how to write a dramatic death scene. Darth Vader that moves like a video game boss that a couple days later can barely move fighting Obi-Wan. Darth Vader seeing the plans being handed over to a ship he takes over the next day and says "You intercepted those TRANSMISSIONS". Amateur garbage.
jumbled up script, nonsensical human behaviour, bad dialogue. Random pet peef: Why is there a console with a switch sitting right on a beach, like switches in 90's shooter games? Forget it, doesn't matter, the characters are so forgettable. Who's that? Well, one can wield a stick blindly and he has a tag line. that other guy has a big gun. I mean... look how well written and acted other shows are. Look at the attention to detail in Foundation. Look at the human layers in Battle Star. Whatever. You're bar should be raised. "It's not as bad as episode II" is really not a badge of quality. SW has access to the best artists in the world with unlimited funds - how can anyone applaud the outcome?
@@ianian9078ROFLMAO, you just attempted to explain why there would be a slow motion explosion in real time... You actually attempted to say an explosion would move slower if only a single reactor was used. This is how desperate your mind is to cling to the idea it wasnt total trash. Literally stupid. Just call me a poopy head already and cry that "but the movie was good to me" and get it over with.
You gotta give it to Edwards and Gilroy to work hand in hand to deliver the best picture possible. I love that egos were put aside for the sucess of the movie. It shows.
I think Gareth put aside his ego and has continued to do so to this day, even when repeatedly pressed on it during Creator interviews. Gilroy however takes every opportunity to twist the knife, and definitely tries to claim it as his movie.
The movie much like the other Disney films breaks all writing rules. It was literally two movies crammed together and allowed no actual audience connection to anyone but the main character. A major mistake for a movie about a team of people going into battle. The entire first half should have been removed and the second half, behind the enemy lines should have been the film, while using flashbacks to fill in the backstory while also placing the team in more precarious positions to get out of to allow the audience to see them BOND and actually feel something when they died. It was so bad that now, suddenly, the death star now blows things up with explosions that move...slow.
I’m a Vet, and this is my favorite SW film. When they bring in the Rebel dismounts, it feels so much like a homecoming, like I instantly see grunts I’ve served with over the last 15 years. This is the most realistic and important element in the flick to me.
People keep saying that the exhaust port was a plot hole, but in the movie it's explained that in additon to the things mentioned in this video, the port is ray shielded and the trench is heavily armed, showing that although the designers didn't consider one man fighters to be a serious threat, they still took it into account. And the rebel pilots' reactions to the briefing show that it's a desperate plan with little chance of success. The only person in the room who seems confident is a naïve farm boy who only last night was staring into the sunset dreaming of excitement, adventure and really wild things.
People also don't seem to get that the exhaust port was _not_ the weakness set up in Rogue One. The instability of the main reactor was. The port was just the only means the Rebellion could find, in the short time they had, to set off the chain reaction from the outside. It was really a very clever way to tie R1 in with the original canon. The rebels could know that there was a vulnerability that could be exploited, and even generally where and what it was, but they still had no idea how, or even if, there was any way to do so. Fortunately for them, arrogance and poor planning had also led to some engineer failing to properly shield a small thermal exhaust port from outside attack.
What makes no sense and why the Death Star being destroyed is ridiculous is that tarkin would have just ordered a freighter to park over top of the exhaust port to make their change zero
I don't feel like the theatrical cut we got needed to be changed, I'm just disappointed we never got to see the scenes that were cut in any form. Deleted scenes were never included on any release of the film. Ever since seeing that conversation with Krennic and Vader in the trailer where Krennic says "The POWAH we are dealing with here is immeasurable", I've always wanted to see the rest of the scene. That line and the way Ben Mendelsohn delivers it is just too good.
Yes I was surprised how good Mendelsohn was. He was one of the best villains in the whole franchise up there with Vader, Gran Moff Tarkin, Bobba Fett and few of those Empire military commanders from The Empire Strikes Back.
The "deleted scenes" here are not like LOTR deleted scenes. They are more like alternate scenes that cannot coexist with the theatrical version. Eg: Beach scene only makes sense if the tower and base are different; Tai fighter scene do not make any sense if Jyn were to survive the tower; Them surviving the end do not fit in for apparent reasons; I think most of them are not even well polished. However, i am sure there are bits of deleted scenes to be put in that might enhance the lore/characters/plot.
OMG, where did they get that footage at 2:10? Those were Stormtroopers from the 501st Legion. I was one of those blown back from the flying car. We spend at least 12 hours on the set testing out the feasibility of a TV show. I've been looking for any mention of this or footage for years and years!!!
"Immeasurable"...but you are right...this scene and dialogue should have been left in. Especially if what this video is saying is true, and it was a conversation between Vader, Krennic, and Tarkin. I loved the internal Imperial power struggle between Krennic & Tarkin, and would love to see more of it.
@@Matuatay Yeah me too, it reminds me of hitlers inner circle such as Bormann and others fighting it out trying to curry favor with hitler while minimizing the other.
@@TonyFromSyracuse101 The dynamic between Tarkin and Vader has long struck me as very similar to Himmler and Heydrich, going back to A New Hope. Tarkin outranked Vader, but Vader was the guy the Emperor sent to personally deal with the real nasty stuff that no-one else had the stomach for.
@@Matuatayit wouldn’t have made sense though as they have the giant build up to the Vader reveal later on on Mustafar, having him too early in the film ruins the power of that scene later on. If anything they could have had Krennic saying it to just Tarkin, rather than Vader as well. So keep the line but lose Vader
I strongly disagree. That final scene pretty much ruined the movie for me (and also detracts from the start of Episode IV). It was pure fan service and, in my opinion, the movie should have ended with Jyn and Cassian.
@@ThePereubu1710 Having Vader there at all wasn't the problem. I read somewhere that originally Vader was going to be on the ground on Scariff and fight rebels there. That's the best version of that scene imo.
@@ThePereubu1710 However, from a commercial standpoint, that Vader scene allowed the movie to get a better reaction among the general audiences. It made it end on a high note that the original movie was missing. And I'm not saying I disagree with you, though. Just saying that for the sudio it was the right call.
Absolutely. Grabbed me like a new hope so many years back. Watch Andor too - it stays with you. So much lately has been bad; Ahsoka is at least enjoyable enough though.
Gareth Edwards is a class act. He has always been humble and spoken with a positive attitude about this film. Also, he WAS fired. Back then Disney cared much more about ensuring positive spin on their films and TV than they do now (so many train wrecks and publicity nightmares!). I have multiple friends in the VFX business who have independently stated that Edwards was given marching orders off of this film. I can't imagine how painful it must have been for him and to then have to go promote the film as if nothing happened and everyone was still friends.
And it's even more gross because although the guy is a talented and passionate writer, Tony Gilroy, who replaced Edwards in the director's chair, basically laughed about it on a podcast some time later, as if it's funny Edwards got kicked off his own film project? Very strange and sad...
Aside from sadly not getting to see the beach run on the big screen, I really feel the re-edit to this film is superior. Rogue One is a lot of fun, but the Vader “kill box” ending makes it one of the greatest SW films in the series.
Disney is like, "Oh, something the fans are interested in and might make us money? NAW" I promise you we'll never get it so long as the Wretched Rat has its grubby paws on the IP lol
I find it funny that they were worried it wasn't as good as Force Awakens as I find Rogue One to be a much better film - while unnecessary, it tells an interesting tale where as Force Awakens just retreads the same ground as previous movies. It isn't unusual for a trailer to have shots that don't make the final cut, or even for there to be shots done just for the trailer, but wow there seems to be a huge difference between what was being promoted and what was finally released. I think the finished product is a good film but yeah, would be interesting to see the original cut to see what Disney originally agreed to make and what the cast all signed on for. Sounds like it wouldn't be that different for the most part but some interesting changes. You never know, Disney + always needs content and this would be a quick and easy thing for them to put up there so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets released sooner than later.
I'm glad they killed off the cast, a war is grim, their sacrifices, in retrospect, made the rebels' struggles all the greater, and their final victory all the more powerful. More films need to kill their casts, just not randomly and for no reason. @@Darkwintre
@@lcmiracle agree too. Kept the dark tone of the film. PLus saves the question of "where were they during epIV. And lets face itwhile TFA started good, it did just descend into a remake of EpIV. Pity But to be honest the additional intro for Cassian (dodgy, ruthless rebel fighter, dedicated to the mission rather than squeaky clean white knight hero), Jyn (lost my parents, abandoned, "i don't care anymore" rather than "they killed my parents I want to fight") and even Saw ( paranoid, fight the empire no matter what the cost/collateral and "just cos we;re the rebels doesn;t mean we're "good")
The comic adaptation also extended scenes quite a bit: extended intros for Jyn and Bohdi, with Jyn's cell mate casually promising to kill her and Galen convincing Bohdi to defect and we see Bohdi sneaking away from the city and meeting the partisans. There would also be a moment of Chirrut sensing Bohdi as he left the city, implying he had some Force abilities. We were going to see how badly Bor Gullet was messing up Bohdi's mind, with his memories being scrambled by the creature. An extended death for Saw where he took out a small holoprojector to look at a picture of Steela. A brief scene between Galen and one of his scientists when they're told Krennic has arrived. A bit of Baze getting ready to assassinate both Krennic and Galen before Chirrut talks him out of it. A really nice scene between Bohdi and K-2SO where K-2 points out to Bohdi he chose to defect while he had to be reprogrammed, lamenting his own lack of personal choice and also explaining why K-2 tells him 'You're a Rebel now!' Mon and Bail reacting to the imminent attack on Eadu. A scene between Mon with Jyn and Bohdi before the meeting, where the 'I Rebel' line was going to be turned into 'Let's Rebel' after Mon tells them not to come with her into the meeting. Alan Tudyk also mentioned two alternate deaths for K-2, one where he died alongside Cassian and Jyn and another where Krennic kills him.
They say that trailer scene where she looks back dressed in the black empire uniform as the lights come on, was just because the camera happened to be filming as they were about to do a take, and they were just turning on the set lights.
The Tie fighter/tower scene could have easily been worked into the theater release. Jen is stopped by the fighter but, just as she closes her eyes expecting to be blasted, a rebel X Wing destroys the TIE so Jen can upload the Death Star plans.
@@Bulletsandblockbusters Jyn limping out to the end of the catwalk is STILL in the movie, but the TIE is gone, because a few moments later she's strafed by a TIE Striker. It was felt that Jyn being threatened by TWICE by Imperial strike craft would have been 'redundant'.
It’s a great shot. I always thought it would have been cool to have her equipped with a slightly beefier gun, have her blast the pilot through the window as she’s walking towards it, and have the TIE fall away.
4:40 The Vader-Hallway-Scene is the only Appearance of an original character in Disney Area Star Wars, that felt genuinely absolutely stunning, amazing and organic. Rogue One and Andor are amazing. The other shows just can't deliver the kind of quality.
It may be a "cool" as a stand alone piece - but in the scope of the actual film it's just tacked-on fan service. The fact it wasn't even included in any version of the script tells you everything you need to know. It certainly wasn't organic - quite the opposite.
Andor was great for the first few episodes but it fell apart for me the moment Cassian turned into some kind of superman. He gets away from everything. At least he can't outrun a blast from the Death Star 😂
@@fallinginthed33p What? That's bizarre, you can say exactly the same thing about any other SW character. How do you think soldiers survive things? Skill, training and sheer luck. That's how Cassian gets away. Is Saw surviving to his 50's/60's despite fighting constant war also a superman thing? Is any character/veteran surviving unrealistic now somehow? Lmao. Not to mention, Cassian blatantly does suffer no matter what. He escapes Aldhani due to good planning and teamwork, but gets caught by a random stop and search via profiling. He loses his mother and his home due to being in prison on false charges.
Would've loved to see that beach scene that got cut out. Actually, i would love to see edward's original cut just out of curiosity. Although the ones we got was already epic.
9:52 - This line reminded me so much of the British scifi series Blake's 7, when in the finale the line "have YOU betrayed ME??" is spoken. As a Blake's 7 fan this movie reminded me a lot of the series in general, with a group of criminals and outlaws risking their lives to fight an evil Federation, and knowing that in the end it will cost them their lives.
I don't think we'll see it because it wasn't complete when Gilroy took over. Reshoots would be needed to finish up missing scenes in Edwards' version. This isn't Apocalypse Now or The Thin Red Line where enough footage was shot to make a few alternate cuts, but it's still interesting for Rogue One to be compared to war movies instead of just being a Star Wars flick.
Personally I think you guys have drunk the Disney cool aid. How do you know its the best version of the story? We never saw the other one to compare, and that's because Disney suppressed it ... probably with some sort of non-disclosure clause on Edwards. Now of course I've no idea how good the original cut might've been. But I do know that, while Rogue One is a decently entertaining film, there were quite a few flaws and plotholes. Poor character development for some of the team, the gaping plothole of why Jinn's dad didn't at least put an outline of the weakness in the holotape he gave Bodhi, Guerrerra just ... gives up, and the last Vader sequence is both a poor fit with New Hope and obvious fan service. I could go on ... maybe take a look at How It Should've Ended, its usually funny and on point. So maybe, just maybe, the original cut would've fixed some of that. But we won't know, most likely, because Disney won't let us know. Could that be because they have a sneaking suspicion they made the wrong call?
Rogue One captured something more of the magic of Star Wars moving forward than any of the other films around it…….it’s also the more recent of the Star Wars films I’ve watched multiple times and still thoroughly enjoyed 🚀🚀🚀💖
@kedabro1957 Not have a dramatic entrance. Immediately use the Force to knock everyone to the ground or floor or ceiling. Even if the initial knock downs are a few at a time, he can quickly knock down small group after small group, then either finish them or knock them out or use the Force to hold them there while stormtroopers search them for the plans. Or he could knock them all down and quickly make his way to the airlock while the stormtroopers deal with the knocked out troopers, searching for plans and taking care of business.
The scene at the end that shows Leia always takes my breath away. I first saw the film a few hours after i heard she died. After we got out i heard her mom Debbie Reynolds died from basically a broken heart. The whole thing almost makes me tear up to this day.
A great team effort. Great directors, editors, music composition, casting...and importantly script. Really decent special effects were just the icing on the cake. Characters were so good and we cared for them. So enjoyable. Can watch this again and again.
I think the best version possible would have included that beach scene. Yeah, the theatrical version is probably better than the original director's cut, but only because he was playing it safe, the one time Dishey was actually willing to take a chance. Rogue One is probably the most liked of the Disney SW films for two scenes that weren't in the origianl screenplay; all the characters dying, and Vader at the end. Although Jen's character seems to have been a bit more cocky and obnoxious in the original draft, I still kinda' miss the line, "This is a rebellion isn't it? I Rebel".
Rogue one is definitely one of my favorite SW films. Hearing you explain the changes, I think the theatrical cut is probably the best cut. I also like Solo. Unfortunately I think Solo was cut down by "The Last Jedi", which disenfranchised many die hard fans, with its treatment of Luke. Also, I think creating a movie like Solo or Black Widow, after the characters on screen deaths, cuts the interest in those movies. BW should have came out before End game.
I totally agree about Solo's poor performance due to the abysmal Last Jedi. Solo's bad reception was heavily biased because of such a bad reaction to what Rian Johnson had done. Really unfortunate - Solo is fantastic.
"Solo"'s poor performance had nothing to do w TLJ. It had a lot of cringe and nonsensial moments and pointless scenes. Simply not a great story. I'm a huge SW fan and literally fell asleep twice. Solo would have been better served as a short series like "Obi-Wan". It simply wasn't that great as a stand alone movie compared to "Rogue One", or even many of the TV series. Rotten tomatoes has Solo at 69% and TLJ at 91%. Audience scores are simply bitter SW fans that try to skew the film and can't handle that Luke Skywalker's charachter followed his path perfectly despite what Mark Hamil thinks. TLJ had as many issues as the other sequel films, but blaming it solely for any missteps is so 2020. Give it up.
Well: I partly agree, but only partly. Luke's path was also that he never gave up. Or abandoned his friends. So I can buy him running away, and being even disappointed by what he found at the Prime Jedi's temple. But... not, him, staying, away. Not as so far presented. Only partially justified, by him severing himself, from the Force's presence. As for Solo - actually, I did have fun with it. But it lacked polish. For all that, TLJ has a lot of depth to it, but depth that is still, often, misfired, or not very neatly pulled off. Agree on the 'past must die' bits, though. That's nothing but a sour red herring, from Kylo. Luke's legacy actually saves the day, at the end. And inspires a new generation of potential Jedi. So that bit did work.@@goober8798
The one part I wish still made it in the movie was the group running across the beach trying to avoid being killed by the AT-ATs. I remember seeing that in the first trailer want to see how that was gonna play out in the movie. Still was an awesome movie but still wish I could’ve seen that in the movie
Whatever the road taken to get there - I believe “Rogue One” is the absolute best film of the Star Wars franchise. Wonderful story, solid acting and character development, beautiful production design, inspired cinematography and great effects. Unlike the Lukas era Star Wars prequel films, “Rogue One” will stand the test of time. Everyone involved should be proud of this film.
One thing that gets often forgotten about how dumb it was for the Death Star to have such a glaring vulnerability is that when the film came out in 1977, that wasn’t a trope yet. It wasn’t dumb at the time because it was still new, and arguably, it only seems dumb in hindsight because A New Hope is the movie that solidified it as a trope in the first place.
Outside of New Hope and Empire, Rogue One is my fave SW movie. Gareth Edwards also created one of my other fave movies, Monsters. Realise Monsters splits viewers, but I think it's great and you can see Edward's use of scale in shows through-out Rogue. As for the cuts, would love to see the complete Edwards movie.
I quite like the recurring theme of hubris throughout the ages in Star Wars. The Jedi and senate hubris refused to believe that anything could possibly deceive or oppose them successfully. The empire had that same hubris and now we are seeig it again in the re-established Galactic Republic in the Ahsoka show. It makes those scenes all the more powerful that show Padme dumbfounded by democracy dying with thunderous applause, or Qui Gon's uttet disbelief in what the council says to him in The Phantom Menace. Its probably my favourite aspect of Star Wars as a whole - who is right, who is wrong, who is doing the right things for the wrong reasons and the wrong things for the right reasons, who is blind to what is going on and who has their eyes wide open and tries to either oppose it or use it to their advantage
Maybe you don't speak English, but never once did the Jedi ever believe they could never be defeated. They successfully sensed a plot to destroy the Jedi, and they successfully knew Anakin was going to betray them, Mace Windu said it best. "I don't trust him"
@@TraceguyRune All these people who feel the need to tear down the Jedi because they hate authority. It will never change the fact the Jedi were right about everything in the end.
@@TraceguyRune Mace, and the distrustful and nearly adversarial treatment of Anakin by the council played directly into Palpatine's plan, and was a primary reason for Anakin's fall; it was practically a self-fulfilling prophesy. They never acknowledged the reality of the situation of Anakin being in the order, instead keeping him at arm's length while Obi-Wan fumbled to deal with him. They became absentee keepers because they never wanted him, but they still used him for the war while simultaneously acting as if his instability was an exterior problem that they couldn't help with. It wasn't in the main plot, but Anakin's story with the council is also similar to troops being used by governments and coming away with unaddressed PTSD.
It's sad that due to the reshootings Alexandre Desplat had to leave the production with a good portion of the score already composed. I do like what Michael Giacchino came up with last minute, but it leaves me wondering what the score could have been. It's said that some of it was adapted to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets but it's difficult to know which parts were originally for Rogue One.
Fan fact, that's Gareth Edwards pulling the lever to release the Tantive IV When asked about it he said, "Well that means, technically, I'm in Star Wars too" haha
Also, thanks for the wonderful videos. Recently stumbled across this channel and have thoroughly enjoyed the content. Your deep-dive research on these beloved film series is amazing.
Rogue one is the best Star Wars and I would love to see a director's cut version, but the fact that all the main characters died made this film that much more real and Grand. Rogue one is realism, dark and for adults, no comedy here. All these elements make Rogue one the best.👍
She has done a couple of high profile movies since- The Theory of Everything, the aeronauts, The midnight sky.. - but I think mostly British projects that are not very mainstream?
I would have preferred if Desplat had worked on the music instead of Giacchino, his themes were very cheesy and ripped off John Williams in a very inorganic way
I think they made a huge mistake with Felicity Jones because she does have a resemblance to Mark Hamill and would have been perfect as Luke's daughter in the sequels instead of having Daisy who can't act her way out of a paper bag and it would have made them much better than the garbage that we got!
Rouge One is my favorite fils after the original trilogy. However, they only had to get two things right. 1. Steal the plans. 2. BEAM them to Princess Leia's ship. Darth says that the plans were beamed to her ship. In this movie, they are hand carried on. All they had to do was have the same end scene with Vader but have them start to beam it to her ship. Then the status bar would be running the same time as Darth is cutting his way down the hall. Same energy, same suspense, but true to the dialog/story. No idea why no one said anything during production.
I really wish I could see the deleted scenes. I don’t think scenes should ever be cut for run time. Star Wars films are long anyway and fabs wouldn’t mind as long as the scenes are consistent with the story
Saying that the exhaust port on the death star is a "flaw in the design" is like saying that the open barrel of a tank's cannon is a flaw. I mean, it leads directly back to the gunner! If you could launch a high ordinance explosive straight down that barrel you could kill the entire crew in one shot! Its also.... an impossible shot to make so no one worries about it.
I hope someone from Disney leaks the extra footage and someone edits those scenes into a new extended version. Either that or AI/Stable Diffusion should be able to generate those scenes (if not, an entire movie) by mid-next yr.
That Rogue One teaser trailer is the example I use of a complete lie trailer. It's all alternate takes and deleted scenes. Then when the DVD was released Edwards says "there are no deleted scenes". That's great they made all those changes, just don't mess with us, release the deleted scenes or make an alternate cut.
Rogue one is head and shoulders above any of the other Disney Star Wars movies. Loved Andor as well, it's the gritty reality and real stakes for the characters that make you care. As opposed to pew pew and learning the force in an afternoon with the other shows/movies.
Cutting the beach chase scene for time because the film has to be 2 hours is the thing I disagree most with. I can't believe they were running ads (not trailers) with these deleted scenes while the movie was out in theaters. Also the marketing team telling them to add things to the trailer that don't happen in the film is wrong. Rogue One in my opinion is arguably the best Star Wars film, but I do believe there is an enhanced version (a special edition) that could be made.
There’s never been a more perfect litmus test for whether the person you’re talking to is an idiot, than when they call the exhaust port chain reaction a plot hole. If characters act in a way that is disadvantageous towards themselves, but they arrive at that decision because of established weakness, then you don’t have a plot hole, you have strong characterization. The Death Star had a potentially and ultimately fatal flaw because the Empire had the fatal flaw of hubris. This is established repeatedly, and it is shown that the Death Star is the ultimate form of that hubris. They overlooked its weakness, then underestimated the Rebels, then refused to retreat when the danger to them should have been most clear, instead you get “Evacuate, in our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances.” There is a single character on the Imperial side who shows humility and he is the only Imperial character to survive the Death Star’s explosion. That character being Darth Vader of course, who refuted the unassailable might of the Death Star and acknowledged the strength of his opponent. Gareth Edwards, in my opinion, is an idiot, as are the people who don’t understand how fundamentally stupid it is to try to explain why the Death Star had a weakness. The Death Star having a vulnerability wasn’t a plot hole, it was the plot.
It's almost surreal how bad the Disney era has been, especially considering how it started. Put Tony Gilroy in charge, it seems like he is the only suit that doesn't hate Star Wars fans.
Great video as always. I’ve read that one of the reasons the original was changed was because vader was hunting down the cast 1 by 1 in an almost Freddy Krueger style slasher and it was too dark. If that was filmed I need to see it.
@@Bulletsandblockbusters that’s disappointing to hear! I personally didn’t watch obi wan after the first episode. Just wasn’t for me/the quality I expect
The combat scenes we got were some of the best ever done in any of the films. The firefight felt much more real. I can only imagine what the original looked like. This is my second fav only edged out by ESB, which I liked for similar reasons. Combat on Hoth felt legit.
There can be no better version than the theatrical cut, it is a masterpiece. After seeing this video it is a wonder to me how such a great movie turn out when there was so much chaos and misdirection? Very much reminds me of Casablanca of how it was made, my all time favorite movie.
A new hope was literally saved by editing after the first cut. It would’ve been a complete flop if it was left to George Lucas. Thankfully he listened to the obvious bad flow and choppy scenes and finally they edited to work well together and it turned out to be one of the biggest movies of all time
Star Wars has always been at its best when it was a collaborative endeavor by multiple creators-famously, episode 4 was saved in part by the actors actively rewriting lines on set and Lucas' then wife who cut together in the editing bay a movie that was far superior to the original cut. Too often do people think movies are something that stem from a sole creative vision. The best movie will always be one where everyone involved contributes to something better at the end of the project. I think Rogue One is a testament to that creative process, and by extension what we see in Andor, with the actors being heavily involved in production therein.
The bigger plothole that Rogue 1 fills is: How the hell did the rebels analyze all those plans and find this flaw in such a small period of time. Now we see that: A) They had the specific part of the plans they needed and B) they knew there was a flaw to be found. This is what a good prequel does. It improves the original film. Unlike those other prequels that only make the entire series worse.
3:34 This is why you need to discuss things like this before you start shooting. Did the executives not read the script beforehand and actually ask, why isn't everybody dead at the end of the movie? If they have they could have solved the ending without costly reshoots
I don't think Solo failed due to the spinoff nature - I think it failed because it came out so soon after the previous Episode VIII - which was largely a disappointment to a large number of fans. Which is a shame, as Solo was a pretty fun movie that had potential for some interesting sequels.
I truly do appreciate and recognize these changes made for a stronger film ..but also I would have LOVED for that scene where Jyn marches toward the ascending TIE fighter to stay. Also? Dang, some of these ..ahem. ANGLES.
Hats off to Edwards for being modest, recognizing his final vision could be improved and working cooperatively with a new director. Most people would have easily left the project, but he was fully committed to delivering the best Star Wars movie he could 👏🏻
0:30 It actually is a bit of a "plot hole" (or at least something that bears further explanation) as Gen. Dodonna, I believe, even mentions that the thermal exhaust port is *unshielded*, which insinuates that normally they would be shielded from projectiles.
I was a kid in Jr. HS (Middle School) when the original "classic" Star Wars came out, so I grew up with the original trilogy. This might be sacrilege to some, but IMO Rogue One is the best of all the movies. The "other" two trilogies could have been so much better, but in the end they were really lacking and disappointing in many areas. As for the streaming series, the first season of Andor was fantastic, with The Mandalorian being a worthy second. However, The Book of Bobba Fet and Obi Wan were very disappointing. So far, Ahsoka has had some good and some disappointing episodes, so we'll see what season two brings. Overall, Kathleen Kennedy almost destroyed the Star Wars franchise with her more "modern" vision of where it should go. Thankfully there are other very creative talents that have saved her from herself...
Forest Whitaker's lines from the trailer were very compelling. I kept waiting for him to say them in the movie.
"What will you do if they catch you? What will they do if they break you? ... If you continue to fight. What will you become?"
That was odd.
And then it cut to Jyn in the pilot uniform, right?
Those last 20-30 minutes in Rogue One are pure gold.
Battle of Scarrif is defo up there with one of the best.
To non-fans and people that dont think.
Death Star slow moving explosion that makes no sense other than the writers are so shit they dont know how to write a dramatic death scene.

Literally stupid. Just call me a poopy head already and cry that "but the movie was good to me" and get it over with.
You gotta give it to Edwards and Gilroy to work hand in hand to deliver the best picture possible. I love that egos were put aside for the sucess of the movie. It shows.
Ya it’s pretty rare and nice to see for once
I think more a case of "we both want our pay cheques, thanks". 😏

I think it would’ve been a disaster sadly considering what a mess rogue one was before gilroy stepped in.

The story for Rouge One was kind of Meh but, I really enjoyed the art style and direction.
JJ Abrams lost alot of credibility when sequals came out.
Totally agree Edwards managed to keep the same tone as the original films

Exactly!
Naïve, not nauve.
people have no idea what a "plot hole" is
I don't feel like the theatrical cut we got needed to be changed, I'm just disappointed we never got to see the scenes that were cut in any form.
Krennic is life
Yes I was surprised how good Mendelsohn was.
Eg: Beach scene only makes sense if the tower and base are different; Tai fighter scene do not make any sense if Jyn were to survive the tower; Them surviving the end do not fit in for apparent reasons;
I think most of them are not even well polished.
Star Wars: Underworld test footage
the one I am hoping to see is the one with Krennic saying to Vader, "the power we are dealing with is unimaginable"
That makes no sense. Maybe your "friends" are mistaken, if they even exist at all.

I agree even if I disagree with them killing off the cast.
I'm glad they killed off the cast, a war is grim, their sacrifices, in retrospect, made the rebels' struggles all the greater, and their final victory all the more powerful.

Force Awakens was much better. More original or not.
@@SDfan2002 looked flasher, no substance to it.
A really nice scene between Bohdi and K-2SO where K-2 points out to Bohdi he chose to defect while he had to be reprogrammed, lamenting his own lack of personal choice and also explaining why K-2 tells him 'You're a Rebel now!'
Mon and Bail reacting to the imminent attack on Eadu.

It’s a great shot. I always thought it would have been cool to have her equipped with a slightly beefier gun, have her blast the pilot through the window as she’s walking towards it, and have the TIE fall away.
Or... Chewie is flying it.
That shot was never in the script for either version of the movie. It was specifically made for the trailer.

I Agree totally.
Lmao. And having a similar outcome with our heroes dying…
You mean like... Seven Samurai from 1954? 😂
I would love to see Gareth Edwards directors cut, but I love the movie we got and think it’s the best version of the story
Same here
I know what you mean, and it would be great to see. But part of me thinks "do we really need another original vs special edition cintroversy?"
I love the corridor scene. What a great last minute addition. It's so tense.
It shows Vaders incompetence.

What would a competent Vader have done?
@kedabro1957 Not have a dramatic entrance. Immediately use the Force to knock everyone to the ground or floor or ceiling. Even if the initial knock downs are a few at a time, he can quickly knock down small group after small group, then either finish them or knock them out or use the Force to hold them there while stormtroopers search them for the plans. Or he could knock them all down and quickly make his way to the airlock while the stormtroopers deal with the knocked out troopers, searching for plans and taking care of business.
Rogue One and Andor are BY FAR the best Star Wars product since Return of the Jedi.
Just noticed that Vader breaths simultaneously while speaking at @1:20
The scene at the end that shows Leia always takes my breath away.

Give it up.
Yeah, but Andor is beloved and we all know how it ended.
@@jonbaxter2254 Andor did not do well in the ratings.

He should have done all 3 sequels. Rogue 1 was a masterpiece.

Rogue one is the best Star Wars and I would love to see a director's cut version, but the fact that all the main characters died made this film that much more real and Grand. Rogue one is realism, dark and for adults, no comedy here. All these elements make Rogue one the best.👍

I love how Felicity Jones classic beauty fills the 70's aesthetic of the original trilogy despite being a modern take
Wonder what happened to her? Haven't seen her in much since.
She has done a couple of high profile movies since- The Theory of Everything, the aeronauts, The midnight sky.. - but I think mostly British projects that are not very mainstream?
Yeah but her acting was meh throughout the entire film
I would have preferred if Desplat had worked on the music instead of Giacchino, his themes were very cheesy and ripped off John Williams in a very inorganic way
I think they made a huge mistake with Felicity Jones because she does have a resemblance to Mark Hamill and would have been perfect as Luke's daughter in the sequels instead of having Daisy who can't act her way out of a paper bag and it would have made them much better than the garbage that we got!
I'd love to see Saw's original scenes and the full beach sequence as bonus features someday, but the final version of the film is excellent.
Agreed

A scene with Vader and Tarkin and Krennic... I would love to see it
That Rogue One teaser trailer is the example I use of a complete lie trailer. It's all alternate takes and deleted scenes. Then when the DVD was released Edwards says "there are no deleted scenes". That's great they made all those changes, just don't mess with us, release the deleted scenes or make an alternate cut.
Rogue One is the only film outside the Original Three that feels like a Star Wars film
Rogue one is head and shoulders above any of the other Disney Star Wars movies.
Loved Andor as well, it's the gritty reality and real stakes for the characters that make you care.
As opposed to pew pew and learning the force in an afternoon with the other shows/movies.
This was a great film. I don't know why some didn't like it. It was a strong story.
Agreed, best SW film since Episode V! Not to mention it set up the best non animated series perfectly in Andor!
Most people loved it.
I knew I wasn’t crazy for thinking this!
People who didn't like it aren't star wars fans.
Thank you olsen. Thanks to you millions of fans had something to cry over and a final high point to finally let star wars rest in piece
Rogue one is great and after seeing Edwards “The Creator” I would of loved to see his original Rogue One vision - as always great video!
Thnx!
3:04 they thought it fell short of the force awakens? LOLOLOLOLOLOL
The only plot hole is when C3P0 says "THEY'RE going to Scariff??"
Gareth made the best Star Wars since Empire. There, I said it.
Gareth made the best Star Wars since Star Wars.
@@einexile I agree, but Empire was better.
I think you overestimate their chances.”
There is a single character on the Imperial side who shows humility and he is the only Imperial character to survive the Death Star’s explosion.
Thank you, I had to skip the whole intro not cus I disagree probably buts its just so played discussion
It's almost surreal how bad the Disney era has been, especially considering how it started. Put Tony Gilroy in charge, it seems like he is the only suit that doesn't hate Star Wars fans.
The BEST Star Wars movie since the 1977-1983 trilogy.
Great video as always. I’ve read that one of the reasons the original was changed was because vader was hunting down the cast 1 by 1 in an almost Freddy Krueger style slasher and it was too dark. If that was filmed I need to see it.
Thnx! And no that was never shot, although I felt the obi wan series should’ve been what you described.
@@Bulletsandblockbusters that’s disappointing to hear! I personally didn’t watch obi wan after the first episode. Just wasn’t for me/the quality I expect
Same here
Omg that woulda been a grrreat movie!!
Masterpiece 😂😂😂 erm no
Yes there can. A directors cut would be better. More of such a good movie is always a plus
Props to the video editor for suggesting the amazing scene.
3:34 This is why you need to discuss things like this before you start shooting. Did the executives not read the script beforehand and actually ask, why isn't everybody dead at the end of the movie?
If they have they could have solved the ending without costly reshoots
💯
After watching Andor I desperately want a Directors cut of Rogue One
I don't think Solo failed due to the spinoff nature - I think it failed because it came out so soon after the previous Episode VIII - which was largely a disappointment to a large number of fans. Which is a shame, as Solo was a pretty fun movie that had potential for some interesting sequels.
And that it was little more than a greatest hits compilation of how all the things we know about him came about. It did far too much far too quickly.
It failed because it wasn't what people wanted from the movie!
Supposedly there's a deleted scene in Saw Guerreras cave where you can see cave paintings of the Legendary Godzilla and the MUTO'S on the wall too.
It's really the ONLY Star Wars movie Disney has made.
Everything else has been canon- breaking big budget fan fiction.
Yet still bad
@@andymiller6661 No its actually really good.
@@frostedhams How so?
I truly do appreciate and recognize these changes made for a stronger film ..but also I would have LOVED for that scene where Jyn marches toward the ascending TIE fighter to stay. Also? Dang, some of these ..ahem. ANGLES.
What Could Have Been Tim Miller's Deadpool 2 Please 🙏
Hats off to Edwards for being modest, recognizing his final vision could be improved and working cooperatively with a new director. Most people would have easily left the project, but he was fully committed to delivering the best Star Wars movie he could 👏🏻
Ita not a stand alone. I hate Kennedy but she deserves the credit for the first Inbetweenquel.
Rogue One was the BEST star wars since the original trilogy.
Having just finished watching all the films & TV shows in chronological order. Star Wars Rouge One is my favourite
Rogue One and Andor are my favorite Star Wars content after the original trilogy
