    America here. I am so happy to hear that you actually get something in return for paying taxes. How amazing to think that investing in the people in your country can be a good idea. Wish we had that here in the U.S.. I am enjoying your videos.

    • @MillaExplores
      @MillaExplores  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh yes! At least we get something in return here (at least so far). This might become an issue as the population is getting older and we have less tax payers but I guess this isn't an issue only in Finland. But a lot of things are definitely better than in the States. 😅 Thanks for watching!

    'Loskapaska' is called 'Schietwetter' in northern Germany, which translates as "shit weather".
    I (20) came from Germany to Finland last year at the end of November with my van and found a dreamlike piece of earth near Kolari and stayed. In the meantime I have bought a small house and I love my life here. This makes me the 4th from my school class who moved to one of the Nordic countries.
    Two things give me small problems here - the language and the fact that I have to smuggle my beloved wine out of Germany every time.
    The move didn't mean a big change for me at all, as Germany and Finland have a lot in common. This is also the case with the deposit system. This is exactly the same in both countries.
    Pleasant aspect of my move - my absolute favorite band Nightwish is at home in Finland.

    • @MillaExplores
      @MillaExplores  ปีที่แล้ว

      "Shitweather" makes sense haha! And I agree, Finland and Germany seem to have many things in common. I'm happy to hear you're loving life here! I love Nightwish too. ☺️ Finland is (in my humble opinion) a great place to live. I can imagine the language causing issues and wine is not cheap here! 😂

    If the sun never sets, you probably need to create an artificial day and night environment, like changing the brightness of lighting, thick curtains, and a big wall clock.

    • @MillaExplores
      @MillaExplores  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, sometimes we do that! Blackout curtains are great in the summer and some people use a bright light in the winter. The wall clock isn't really necessary though. 😊

    Hi! I’m thinking of applying for my PhD in Finland. I know the social culture sounds similar to my preferences, but I was wondering if you recommend a good way to make acquaintances in advance? Or any advice in general coming from the US?

    • @MillaExplores
      @MillaExplores  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi! That sounds great, good luck! 😊 In advance I'm not sure, but I would maybe try to look for some Facebook groups for expats/foreigners in Finland and the Couchsurfing app might also be worth a try.
      Once you're in Finland, depending on the location you could find a hobby where it's easy-ish to meet new people (crossfit is a good one) or join local networking event (these are common in Helsinki and usually announced on Linkedin). When it comes to meeting people, Finland is very different to the US. It might be hard to get to know people and small talk isn't really a big thing but once you find people to hang out with, it's easy to make lifelong connections. Finnish people can seem introverted at first but once you get to know Finns, they're easy going and honest. 😊

    How much is the average housing rent in Helsinki or populated areas?

    • @MillaExplores
      @MillaExplores  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This of course depends a lot on the area, size of the apartment etc. I'm not super familiar with rent in Helsinki as I live in another city but me and my partner pay around 900€ a month for the both of us and that's currently a pretty normal rent in the mid-size/bigger cities. Add a few hundred euros on top of that for rentals in Helsinki area. :)

      Oh that would be lovely! Finnish winter is cold but magical 😁 I recommend visiting Lapland in the winter. I believe there are some flights from the UK to Northern parts on Finland in the winter time, probably to Rovaniemi or Kittilä. In Rovaniemi you'll find Santa Claus' village which is super cute. In Levi/Kittilä, you can go downhill skiing, and also I have a friend who arranges wonderful trips in the area, he's a super cool guy so I can highly recommend his company: www.arctichousesafaris.com ☺️
