Yep, farmers are experts at finding cheaper ways of doing things. Helped my dad change a power steering pump on a Rover 820. Took us 7 hours, including 2 making the special tool we needed to do the job.
I was a GM tech in the US for several years, it sucked, so I went back to truck driving, I feel your pain. Beautiful automobile, I look forward to the T-34.
Sympathy from the USA! In my younger years I worked on some UK cars, LR model 109 (parts are hell to get), MG As and I found out with some friends that the best way (almost the only) to get the motor out of a bugeye Sprite was to have a really big, strong guy straddle the engine bay and grab the loosened motor while the rest of us scrambled to secure it when he stood up straight. Don't even ask me about how you had to rebalance the carbs after changing the spark plugs on a Lotus Europa and then go to a chiropractor for the rest of your life because you had to dangle yourself upside down/sideways to get to the engine bay. Tanks must be a lot calmer to work on.
I suggest you fab a thin sheet metal wrap around the frame and the oil line. This could eliminate those tie wraps but secure and protect the hose. I bet the car rides better too. Cheers
If your still worried about the tire wearing the hose just cut a stainless pipe in half and make a shield over the hose. All the best from Surrey BC Canada

i had a similar issue with an oil cooler pipe years and years ago - the vehicle which i won't say what it was coz your laugh and make me feel even sillier, had an odd pipe that was no longer available and if it was, was probably only available on Mars or somewhere, but my friend who happened to be a plumber come gas fitter went (in a Joe accent) 'Oh that's a BSP fitting i think' checked it and was spot on, so off i went to my local plumber gas retail therapy store, they got a spare parts section downstairs, and the nice chap their disappeared with my sample pipe and came back with one exactly the same, complete with the end banjos as well, bonkers, and i think it cost me about £12, so i bought a handful and of course made some profit on them as you do PS trust Jack to break the spring on the Roller, do we ask what he was doing at the time? anyway - love you
Brilliant. I bought a lovely Turbo R about a month ago and the first two problems I had to sort were exactly the same! I got my parts from my friendly Bentley Rolls Royce breakers near Leeds.
Might think about putting some form of cushioning between the zip tie and the oil hose and frame to prevent excessive rubbing. Hate to see something go even worse. Good job by the way! Live your adventures and work!
There should be steering stop bolts that stop the wheels from turning to much you could probably back it out some so the wheel won't turn so close to your your new oil line. Just a thought.
I work for several years, restoring British cars in America. One of the jokes we always had were Rolls-Royce which is Bentley are designed by six-year-old school kids with no concept of a vehicle. Especially the brake and hydraulic suspension systems. That one you’ve got there is no exception. It has front springs bigger than my 1988 Ford F350 Dually has in the front. it has a 5000 pound GVW front axle in it. That is an appropriate car for you kid, It’s built like a tank.
I enjoy finely tuned small engines and the uses of them. I hate having to fix the family cars. I see Ted hates it too. Love the show, thank you so much.
10/10 for effort Joe. I can imagine the oil feed pipe was a telephone number as it's a Bentley. Only thing I would have done as temp measure, was put hose protector wire around the front bit where tyre might rub. (Hydraulic) Now back to normal panic mode with everything still to do.
hi Mr Hewes, i am old enough to remember the Torry Canyon oil tanker when it went aground of the Scilly isles, a complete mess, the army sent in Bedford RL's with 50 gall drums full of degreasing fluid to try and help. in the end the RAF bombed the ship. great video, Jim Bowen was great and did games shows,
Brilliant video as always, thank you. The Bentley is a life work for sure, have some fun along the way. Looking forward to the next installment of the epic saga, cheers.

I we are very time poor mr hewes but I would have done the side of the Bentley whilst you had it there in pieces Especially with using that special spring compressor I have never seen springs so long before in my life but I have never worked on anything so fancy 👍👍🇦🇺

I think the wire is part of the 'Active Ride' adaptive dampening setup that Bentley used around this era. Looking at the valve body, I am guessing it's a pair of solenoids that will open or close depending on dampening requirements. Given it's an RR/Bentley product, the dreaded Castrol HSMO is probably involved judging by that metal line coming off of the shock body. My XJ40 uses this green LHM like mineral oil for the brake pressure booster and on version with self levelling rear suspension, it's also used for the rear struts.
We bought rear discs for the Boss's 70's Shadow and then tried separating them off the hubs...... went to local Commercial Vehicle workshop to use their 1" Air gun to get the nuts off....... didn't even touch it. Ended up buying to complete hub assemblies with the discs from Flying Spares. Just over a grand for the pair (one side was more expensive than the other which was weird) and the discs alone were something like £650+.
Joe, you should try rust converter, I swear by the stuff (bloody hell - see!!). It's water based and chemically converts the oxide layer into a hard protective coating. Just remove all the loose stuff first, as you did on the Bentley, then spray or brush it on, thinning with water as required.
I had exactly the same problem with my Continental R and the oil pipes. And I also went to Bonding and Reline - because I can confirm to replace the 3 pipes with aftermarket us £2500! Bonding and Reline managed to copy the originals with the solid sections, superb company.
Bloody hell Joe 😳 I thought that the exxon valdis would have been too old for you! But I guess that your dad must use the Torrey canyon quote when describing an oil spill or leak.😊

flexible hose are cheaper and works better + it last way loonger than metal/copperhoses. so i agree that is the best option you made to fix the oil issue :)
That repair yo the suspension would never pass the annual inspection here in Belgium. You would have to replace the whole thing. The problem with expensive cars is that they end up in the scrapyard sooner or later, either because of poor maintenance or swapping it for something new.
