I glad you did not get rid of your dog, I see so many GSP's getting rehomed. They are family, if you take the time to bond with them you will get good results. I have had many, house raised puppies and kennel raised puppies. I got female that was raised by the whole family, the kids were home schooled, and dad worked at home. She was extremely smart, I raised her during covid and worked remote at home. The second day I had her I trained her to go from two platforms, and then said kennel and she went to her crate. At 8 weeks old I was amazed at how well she did. My male puppy was 100% a kennel dog, he was a different story. He took longer to train, but I trained him with pigeons and his retrieval was and still is awesome. I has no fear of guns, or thunder. He wanted outside during a thunder and lghting storm, I found this exetremely odd, so I let him out just to see. He went outside to pee and had zero fear., I laughed and he came back in after about 1 minute. He is the most driven, athletic, cordinated GSP I have ever seen. He is a hunting machine, and a great dog. He is like a kid wen he wants something he just stares at me until I give in. For example, if he wants a toy, or some of my ice cubes in my water, he is super persistant. I tell him no and he never gives up, all part of what makes Hawkeye, Hawkeye. If a dog gets on my nerves i just laugh because that is what GSP's do. When I was a teen my GSP went with me when I was fishing, she would blow bubbles and put her nose in the water and grab my stringer of fish and pull then onto the shore. I would get mad at her and chase her away then put the fish back in the water, 5 miutes later she did it again. My point is I never allow myself to get to upset now, I just laugh when the dogs start to get on my nerves. You have to learn to enjoy them, regardless of the silly things they do. If you can do that then you can own a GSP. If not get a Lab, or dog that is a little more laid back. They are bred to be high energy outdoor hunters, if you ignore any dog, they will develop bad habits and becomne destructive when left alone. You have to make time daily to exercise them and spent time with them. Training is difficult is you have multiple people in the house, others tend to untrain the dogs, it takes time and cosistancy to get results. I have never met a GSP I did not like, they are great dogs, loyal, loving, full of life, playful, silly, funny, and great family dogs. Nice video it helps people thinking about getting one, understand, good and difficult things about GSP's
They really are a dog of such personality. I often wonder how people have low energy, boring dogs :) I think that stubbornness you mention relates to their independent streak that is needed when hunting. They are constantly making decisions in the field. I think they often ask themselves the question "what's in it for me?". For that reason it is so important that we build an excellent trusting rapport with them where we are what they want to listen to. For the new GSP human, a tired dog is a good dog. That is tough, especially in the first year of their life. I found at about two years old something clicked for mine where I could see the various pieces of training all coming together. For new (never before) GSP owners remember it is like having a Ferrari as your first car - it is tough to learn to drive on a car like this, but it can be done with a careful approach and constant learning. Seek out advice from those who really know their stuff. Tammy, thanks for another great video and for sharing your learning. Keep having fun with your two! Tango (the GSP) from the west coast of Canada says hello to your two.
A quick comment about Daisy’s personality. We picked her out at 7 weeks. My wife said which one is laid back? He said this one… He lied, she is only laid back when she wants to be. Best hunting and family dog I have ever had. She and our lab are sisters… Keep up the great videos!!
I smiled at your comment about kids. mine was a leaner and had to be careful she didn't lean on kids or they would hit the ground! looking forward to more of your gsp stories. have you played harmonica? they love to sing along
Love the info you share. Your pups are so sweet. I have a 2. 1/2 yr old girl and 9 month old boy GSP. There are the best. My boy is like your younger one when it comes to being left
My GSP will have a meltdown if I just walk out the door. However it I tell him that I am going and I will be back, he calms down. I tell him to watch for rabbits in squirels in the back yard and he listens. They are much smarter than you think. Start by telling them you will be back soon. make a short trip and return, gradually making the time longer, to help them get over anxity.
you fully describing a Vizsla as well. WE have only ever had viszlas BUT are going to rehome an adult GSP as a playmate for a 100% nuts Vizsla. The outtakes could be my house in days gone by when we had 2. G'day from Australia !
Great content in the video our gsp do all of tht Wht u talked about but thy are the best breed ever who knows all abt this breed I have had thm all my life we love thm thy are such a joy to have thy are so different but thy certainly keep u on yr toes 🤣😂❤we love thm ❤
Love your videos, GSPs are just plain intelligent and Have you read HOW I TAUGHT STELLA TO TALK 2018? Well Darla is over ten years old now and learned the pushing the buttons to go out in a month , but she just lost her bro our precious Spanky this past March . You are right about the personality , the genetics ! Darla is a copy of her dad who we knew , she would never had to be trained to hunt! Spanky was the most laid back , reminded me of our first Peter, it's best to have two or three lol I have had dogs for over 60 years and they all slept with my kids and me, it's the only way to go, I just wish more people would realized How SMART all DOGS are! Glad you got a GSP first! And Bentley does not like you doing the video lol
My male GSP is going on four years, I. Too almost gave him up, the first years was tuff, I'm so glad we stuck it out, I have the elite breed of the K9 world this breed is so incredibly intelligent.
I love your channel. Thank you for all your wisdom and advice. My GSP is 12 weeks. My vet calls her firecracker. Her name is Remi Florence. I work full-time as a professor as well but I love the outdoors but I having a difficult balancing her energy and my work schedule. I need like a 101 course on GSP .. thanks 😂❤ 1
FYI - I've had my new gsp male puppy for a little over a week. (I also have a doberman girl that's 17 months.) This little guy was NOT napping at all. He was acting very aggressive within a few days of settling in. At first I was very concerned. His biting was out of control. He would not respond to conventional training. He pestered my girl constantly and she's high energy too. My Dobie resorted to grabbing his throat (gently but firmly) and press him to the floor and he still fought her, he would not submit (She's a big 85lb, tall girl). He would do the same towards me. Then I realized he was getting wired due to over-stimulation. He was raised outside in the country in gated kennels and I brought him into a big, colorful, noisy, house with two dogs (old pug) & a cat. I started kenneling him in my dark room w/soft classical music. After four hours of wake time, right when he's getting into his spinning out of control mode he goes in the kennel. So now after only a few days, these forced naps are no longer forced. He wants to sleep. He naps at least an hour & 1/4 about 3x per day. His behavior has changed drastically. He is now very loving, sweet, and a bit of a clown, and is responding to training and eating more. I'm not an expert on gsp but its obvious mine didn't know how to respond to exhaustion.
Kennel pupies are hard at first, house training takes awhile, glad you stuck with it. It is best to separate the dogs during trainng, and do short sessions often. There are tons of videos to reference, remember the first 6 months is critical to deleope the dog to overcome unwanted long term issues. Train often, they love the interaction, and are willing to learn. They are smart dogs.
Gsps definitely attach themselves to one favorite human Like you said, they are a breed that always wants to be with their humans. After owning a "high energy" GSP, ive learned its best to have a 2nd high energy dog to equalize them.We ended up getting a Austrailian Shepherd and now have a beautiful pairing of smart energy dogs that play excellent together!
Some things can be predicted... Energy level: 100/10 Goofiness:100/10 Weirdness:100/10 Happiness:1 000/10 And then you might get smth like prey drive 100/10 or prey drive 5/10,which depends on line and genes. GSPs are just full of charachter and so charming, every single one is so much different than the other one! Life without GSP is dark life!
You are so right. My Bullet is also stubborn. He comes around though. He hates when I'm mad at him. I love him so much. He is a rescue. I have never had GSP until Bullet. I had several labs. I loved Cash my lab before i got Bullet. Was so smart and would not leave my side. His previous owner was married to my first cousin and he killed himself. So Oneday Cash jumped in my jeep and would not get out. So a few days later i called my cousin and told her i was really enjoying him. So she asked if i wanted him and she said they were not able to give him time. I thought he was needy. Omg if Bullet does not get my attention plan on him doing something else and its never good.lol. i love him so much. I had his daughter he had with a full lab for a year the 2 together were terrorists. It was because they each wanted me. I had no gf or roomate so it was rough. But i had a friend who wanted to get her daughters a puppy and i said they love Sassy and shes still a puppy just a huge one. Those girls almost rubbed her fur off Christmas Eve when they got her. Ill never forget her tirning around as they were leaving as if to say thank you. so happy happy ending and i still get to see her. The mix is beauty. She looks like a black and white lab. Shes also just one black eye. Not the mask like Bullet. I love you videos. In fact i got ball time sorted out after watching you. 2 balls what a genius idea.lol
Victoria does not like being left out of the action. If we are outside doing yard work and keep her inside, she will whine and whine. All she wants to do is be around family.
@@Tammy_Bashore We figured that when the pup crawls into our lap and racks out, they feel they can trust us to protect them. They want to be on our team.
