    Our GSP lived happily for 17 years and 11 months. He was still very active up until age 16 and then slowed down. We miss him and all the long walks and laughter that he brought us. Even the cat misses him. My first pointer helped raise my children. He was so gentle with them. Best breed ever!

      Wow. I had my last short-haired live to be 17 years 3 months and everyone I have talked to said she was the oldest they have heard of. She was able to fend for her self till the end. Now starting over my new baby is 6 months old I got her at 8 weeks. Either they got faster or I got older. Lol

    I've just adopted a GSHP mixed with our local Maltese Kacca breed.
    He is just amazing. He really got the best of both breeds as he is lively, active yet very obedient and eager to please like a pointer but also knows how to be calm in most situations and is very sensitive and in tune with most people and other animals he meets like our local Kacca dogs. He doesn't have a big hunting instinct though as his breeds would suggest he'd have. Hence why I think he was abandoned and left tied to a tree at less than a year old, so we suspect he is a possible hunting dog fail. But he is the perfect dog for us non hunters and we are so grateful to have him. GSHPs are really beautiful dogs.

    This is the first time that I took on a GSP since he was a present from my son. I always had Dobermann Pinschers and I find that the GSP was so much easier to train and their memory is so much better. They love to please and are not such hardheaded and aggressive as the Dobermann's. I've had my GSP since he was about 4 months old and he's the best dog in the world. Within two weeks he learned to sit, give paw, lay down and also he retrieves the balls that I throw. He's also my best friend and my coach, we exercise and take long walks together. He's the perfect pet!!!!!

    I found out once I got a GSP that they have a very fast metabolism, so depending on the food you give them they get extremely gassy. Guess its because they have an extremely high metabolism and need a slow digesting food. The energy of the breed is seriously no joke, go walk 5 miles he lays down 20 minutes or so and is ready to go again I dont know if you can wear this dog out.

    I used to work with a GSP at a doggy daycare, I fell in love with her within minutes. It took a few days of me being there consistently for her to get used to my presence, but after a few days she would start pointing to me as soon as she saw I was working. it was a 12 hour doggy daycare and I could throw the ball all day long, and when she got home she was ready for an hour long nap, but then would be ready to play fetch for another 2 hours.

    we have a female GSP approaching 1 year of age...You have described her perfectly!!! I might add that due to all the points for why you should not get one, the owner should be in pretty good physical condition! our dog is quite an exuberant, active, and physical dog, husband & wife in mid 60's in very good physical condition, and she wears us out with the go go go, running and jumping, etc. Really needs 2 long walks (30 minutes minimum) to be able to be at ease inside ( of course this is not always possible!!) But what a sweet heart and snuggler....jat

    Well, you guys are a find! This is a fantastic channel ‼️ I’m going to work through the vids ASAP. I’ve already mentioned my boy in the comments on the companion vid to this one, so no repetition here.
    What I’d like to say is that Freddie integrated into our family remarkably smoothly over the Covid period - he’s 18m now. It’s continuing to be difficult to socialise him as I would normally do with any dog. And I’ve learned that socialisation is especially important for this breed - not so much to ‘protect’ others, because he’s very obedient, amazingly easy to train, always well exercised and a complete soft touch - but more so that he can remain relaxed with new people.
    So, I was wondering, what about a short vid with some special GSP focused tips on socialisation for young dogs (or proxies for what we would normally mean by that) in this era of lockdown? I’d love to hear a few minutes on this from you guys. Your presentation skills are more than up to the potential ‘difficulties’ this topic presents. Very few great trainers have risked covering this topic, but you guys could do it - and things aren’t going to get any easier as Xmas 2020 approaches.

    I really want a gsp but I work a full time job. I got my first gsp when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.

    • @deanb6163
      @deanb6163 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. If you do as you wrote, you will be fine. When your dog learns that he can depend on you to exercise him twice daily he will learn to depend on that to keep his sanity and be calm while he waits for his next outing. At least that's how mine has been for 15 years in the same circumstances.

      We have a gsp. We do not hunt. From the gsp litter, we chose the one that seemed less interested in the bird wing the breeder would play with in front of the puppies. We do have a big house surface and big yard. We try to walk him at least every 2 days. And in spring, summer and autumn, we run 8km 2-3 times a week in trail forest. We feed him only raw food and he is very calm and affectionnate towards people and other dogs.

      Not much except that gsp’s will do better in the warmth while wirehaired will do better in the cold because of its longer coat. Gsp’s have a better coat for hunting though so if you wanna get a hunting dog go for the gsp

      We had one because she wasn't fit for hunting (a hard mouth).

      We have a 3.5 year old female GSP and recently added another female GSP pup and we don’t hunt. We love our long walks/hikes though and our older dog has been perfect for us, she’s so chilled in the house as she gets a good hour walk first thing in the morning and another hour in the evening (off lead obviously across the fields). I work from home so I also take her out into the garden and play fetch for a few mins couple times throughout the day. She loves nothing more than to cuddle up with us on the sofa in the evening. Love her to bits! Working on the puppy and following the Fenrir PPC course, which she’s doing amazingly well at.

    • @laurenfox8777
      @laurenfox8777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They need plenty of mental exercise so be prepared to put in a lot of time with this breed. We don’t hunt ours but take him everywhere dogs are allowed. We also have a boat which he goes on that with us every time we go out. The breed really doesn’t tire out like most dogs do for a full day of adventure. As long as you’re willing and able to treat him like another family member and bring him along, it should be fine. Also I would absolutely recommend a fenced in yard...for your own sanity.

    Hello I am interested in getting a GSP puppy for the first time. I am an avid hunter of upland game and mostly waterfowl. I know Gsp's are amazing upland game dogs, are they equally as great with waterfowl retrieval? I live on a 2 acre property with 3 other companion dogs which are 2 german shepherds and a pug. I live an active lifestyle of camping, fishing, and hunting. I spend a lot of time outdoors. But I also will be away from the house for about 10 hours a day working. Would this be a problem for a Gsp? Would I be able to kennel the dog outside or keep the dog in the yard without destruction of the house while at work?

      @@KnifesFISHING101 It all depends on you, and the dog. I tried leaving my (solo) GSP loose in the yard while I went to work. My neighbor called me 2 hours later and said "your dog is at my house." She tunnelled out under my fence like a true criminal.
      SInce you have other dogs, I say go for it. You WILL have to spend considerable time with your GSP every day, even after 10 hours of working. They do not quit. That dog is probably going to be stuck to you for a few years. So please make sure you know what you're in for.

      I’ve had multiple gsps and I agree. I’ve never met a gsp that’s “reserved towards strangers” and very seldom have I met a vocal pointer. Easily trainable WITH PATIENCE because they can become bored or distracted easily. They are extremely highly motivated dogs with a tendency for being a little rambunctious for sure.

    GSPs are awesome, but not everyone should get one. They are high energy and need to work, preferably hunt. That's what they have been bred for. If you can't put in the time and effort to exercise and train with both physical and mental stimulation, you should *not* get a GSP.

    • @maelliw661
      @maelliw661 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's so true. In Germany you can only get a puppy if you are a hunter. I got mine after a longer discussion as a rescue dog.

      @@gustavogonzalez5941 that’s great - lots of physical exercise for them, but that’s only 1/2 the battle. You need lots of mental stimulation as well - obedience and sport training, focus exercises, etc. then you can have a well balanced dog you can live with. Otherwise you’ll be turning your dog into a super athlete that will drive you nuts inside your home.
