My brother went back into the army at Fort Benning and when it was time for graduation he had all of his medals. He had more medals than the drill sergeants. When they wore their ACUs on family day he slapped on his combat patch and they told him to take it off but he didn’t. When he went to AIT he said everything was much better. As much as I love the army and retired I’m too old to get back in.
Great video brother. I'm currently in the process of getting back in. Was in the Marine Corps for eight years and got out as a Sergeant. I missed the five year cutoff so gotta go back through basic. This really helped.
The regulation you are referencing is TRADOC 350-6, Chapter 4-13, p. 66 I have reclassed a couple of times, and especially since I am a NCO, certain privileges of both rank and status (being a reclass Soldier) applied in how I was treated. At Fort Jackson, there is a separate company just for reclass Soldiers. As you said, different commanders will interpret the 350-6 reg as they see fit, but the reg is pretty explicit.
I am actually trying to pull that up on Google but nothing will appear. I am an Air Force SSgt. (E-5) going in as an E-5 and was told by my recruiter that I will be able to go into Basic only for 5 weeks since I'm Prior Service, now I'm doing a lot of research and a lot of people are saying Prior Service do the whole 10 but not with the other trainees. It's very confusing.
I’m getting back into shape to go in for OCS. I feel the need to prove myself to myself again. I want to deal with the BS because I wasn’t the best soldier. I was a kid and wanted to use the army to get what I wanted, I didn’t want to be used. Now that Im a decade older than when I first went in, I have good reasons to serve. I understand what I’m getting into and my family is a lot more supportive. I don’t want to be a blue flacon to other prior service, but that need to prove that I’m not a fuck up and deal with the stress is still there.
Great info man. I’m 41 and going back in the ARNG next week after being out of the Army for 21 yrs! I’ve heard Basic has changed quite a bit but I’m thankful to get this opportunity again.
So I went back in the Guard after a 22 year break at the age of 57. I was a prior service Captain, but enlisted as an E-5. I wound up in two different companies because of the COVID shuffle, and the treatment was different even within two different companies in the same battalion. In each company I spent one day in general population, but then got separated into my own living area with NCOs from the other company. We got our phones and were allowed to go around Jackson on the weekends. Other than that, we did pretty much everything else that the privates did. In my company, the E4 and below prior service got no privileges at all until the last 2 weeks. The other company let their E4 and below prior service have an on-post pass on the weekends, but they had to live in general population. It really does boil down to the company commander.
@@joeguillory8050 Good luck! The drill sergeants weren’t too sure about me until I passed the first ACFT. Do good on that, and I think you have a much better shot at getting privileges.
@@dannybee6677 16.5 years prior service for Guard retirement purposes. As long as you can get 20 years of creditable service by the time you turn 60 (62 with a waiver) you are not too old.
I’m 49 and just talked to a recruiter. I got ten to go. ACFT should be fine except for the run. I should have traded some barbell time for running time. You got any advice?
This was great, thank you so much! I am currently in the process of reenlisting and it’s been hard to find videos on prior service completing BCT. Hope you enjoy your experience even more the second time around.
I went to Coast Guard boot camp on 10 January 89 from the Army (10 June 84 to 88. Because my MOS didn't cross over / cross deck it was back to E3 for me! Our Senior Company Commander was a Senior Chief (E8). This Senior Chief was really cool with us. He said he wanted us to not take on the Recruit Leadership positions in our companies, but he'd rather have us take on a support role within our companies. In my company we had 2 PS guys. I became the company runner and loved it (lots of runs to the Exchange for our CC and ACC) because I was able to hook up my fellow recruit! I don't know what happened with the Companies before us, but we didn't get the privilege of a prior service boot camp experience! Needless to say it was an experience, helping my shipmates become A J Squared Coasties! Cape May, New Jersey was amazing... I want to say thank you for your service! I served 13½ years and am now 90% SC! Take care of yourself and document everything concerning your health!
Great video. I'm 32 deployed oef 11-12 was out in 2014. Been thinking about re enlisting. Lately. We didn't have any prior service guys when I went through until after basic and our actual OSUT started then we got a couple reClasses but that's it.
I went to basic at Leonard Wood in 1993. We had 2 prior service, 1 being an ADA guy, the other being a former 11B Ranger that jumped into Grenada. He wore his CIB, jump wings with mustard stain and combat scroll. They were both treated the same, but, after 1700, we could hear both dudes in the DS office, closed door, laughing and bull shitting. One DS that was tabbed, loved fucking with the prior service Ranger, it was a special relationship. Later, after I was a reservist for a few years, I went active duty, had to be in repo at Benning, waiting for jump school, was in a prior service platoon, did anything we wanted to.
im prior service army, i was national guard as a 14S and switched to infantry active duty, i went through benning in 2020 and they treated us like royalty at my battalion at first then covid hit and things toned down...but they do treat you with respect, you will be in leadership positions, helping out the drills, and we kept our phones, i had my car, my playstation lol it was kinda cool but it's different in each battalion or company
I went to another AIT after my first tour in Iraq when I broke both of my ankles back in 07 2nd MOS I was put with the prior service guys it was great had my Pov and everything
I had the same experience as when I joined the army I'm a prior service marine at Fort Jackson I was the only one my bct I fought and my company commander gave me my privileges on the conditions of complete training each day, carry company giddon, act as a secondary ds in my platoon and prove my I'm military by overachieving I wasn't eligible for honor grad he made sure I got my privileges in ait. That commander proved marine and military help each other.
As a former Marine in the early 80s 80 to 84, i went back in the guard in 05 and did not have to go to ABCT, And became a scout and scout instructor in 06!!!
When I went through BCT ( I went through in 2020) we had at least 2 prior service per plt. My company did nothing different for them. It was mixed with some NCOs and others that were E-4 but they had nothing different from everyone else. They honestly had more work cut out for them because the DS would make them help with supply needs. In other companies I heard they were separated from their plt and formed up behind them, had their own bay, and had crazy chill phone privileges. Seems to be cycle and company based honestly like you mentioned in the video
I’m currently an E6 in the Air Force and am joining the Army NG with an 18x contract. This means that I have to complete Army basic/infantry school (OSUT). Has anyone had any issues getting into an online BLC or ALC course being in a different branch. I was told if i can complete those courses then I can retain my rank when switching blue to green. Going from E6 w/ dep to E4 w/ dep would not be ideal for the family. I’m extremely glad I stumbled upon this video!
Here at benning they treated me like shit. All the DS said they didn't consider me as a prior. According to article 350/6 got a brief by the new CO about our own living quarters and never got them. certain DS wouldn't even let us check out after POI. And out of all of the priors I was the only Marine with a deployment.. we were all lied too..
11B E-4 mafia. I went OSUT, & was B 2/19 Discharged 06, I kind of miss Sand Hill. 30th AG sucked, I was bored as hell. But then again I was green when I went. Great video brother.
It’s freaking crazy to make priors attend basic. They already earned the title served and proven they have what it takes to be soldiers. Why make them repeat it , why not a refresher course and be done with it?
I heard stories from drills of other companies who said their prior service ncos got post passes on weekends and were mostly left alone. My drills and CO were really strict and tough with me in contrast. I did get my phone in my room every night
Thank you so much for putting this information out here, brother! I am shipping on Jan 3, and this find this information useful. By chance, would you be able to provide the regulation (AR) that you talked about on this video?
6 years of what? 6 years in the Marine Corps? 6 years since your EAS? 6 years since your EOS? Because if you’re saying it’s been 6 years since your EAS you’re still within the 3 years to be waived from going to BCT. They start counting the years from when you finished your obligation in the IRR. I have to go to BCT. My EOS was back in 2015. Read TRADOC 350-6 4-15 b. (1) (1) Prior service personnel entering the Active Army are not required to attend BCT if they completed Army or U.S. Marine Corps basic training, or completed training for U.S. Air Force or U.S. Navy Special Operations Forces, or U.S. Air Force Security Police, **AND** have less than a 3-year break in service.
@@TheJediKnight89 I think a change came out shortly after that order. 2 months after that came out, Army Directive 2019-31 establishes “PS personnel excepted in paragraph 5 and with less than a 5-year break in service who have completed Army BCT, Marine Corps Basic Training, Air Force or Navy Special Operations Forces training, or Air Force Security Forces training are exempt from attending PS-AIC, BCT, or OSUT. However, if these PS personnel have more than a 5-year break in service, they will be required to attend a Prior Service Refresher Course (PSRC) as established by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command. The PSRC is authorized to be conducted at Regular Army or reserve component locations.”
Privileges in Basic Training. Shit has changed even for prior service. I was at Ft. Benning in may of 08 to Aug 08 and we had a prior service guy who was treated like us. Had no passes. As a matter of fact no one in basic had a pass no matter where you were.
This is a great video brotha. I’ve got about 16 months left on my current Navy contract before I can make the switch. I had a buddy that enlisted the same time I did but he went Army. He told me the exact same thing you stated here, but I kinda thought he was pulling my leg. Can’t wait to make the switch to the Army.
I was in basic training just as Vietnam was winding down. Our Training Instructor (USAF) was just notified he wasn't selected for reenlistment after 8 years of active duty. I'm certain he was irritated, but what I saw was someone quitting. He left us alone for days at a time. When I saw him, he didn't even look or talk to us. Other TI's didn't chip in to help. We followed the posted-training schedule and figured things out on our own. With hardly nobody watching, I liked skipping breakfast to get an extra hour sleep in the morning. Later, another TI went away for the weekend to get married. He never returned and got listed as AWOL. I learned early we weren't a perfect organization. Later, there was a RIFT (Reduction In Forces) and thousands were kicked out with the standard Honorable Discharge.
I was prior active duty Marine, currently in the process transferring to National Guard. I don’t need to do their boot camp, even if I had to do their boot camp doesn’t bother me at all.
Same boat here except Army reserves..... i get to skip it too. Honestly though, if i had to do it, it doesnt really same as bad as the marines was lol.
@@gogurtz1738 changing. Was infantry in the marines, now I’m going through the ACASP program for 68P since I’m already one in the civilian world. I also get to skip AIT.

I was told Infantry training always gets treated like a day 1 private. Period. We had a tanker in my class, some other MOS’ as well. They had special treatment but I was Chemical. We had an infantry sniper from 82nd who got shot in his fingers so he had to reclass if he wanted to stay in. He said the MOST’s in his infantry basic were treated like dogshit. He was expecting that treatment.

I was a prior service soldier from the USMC and what you were explaining is no different than what I went through. I believe there should be no “special treatment” we all signed up the same way, despite if we did it once before.
@@Mr.Enfuego my mistake. I had a 5 year break so I’m patiently waiting for my ETP waiver to get approved or I go to basic either right after Christmas or New Years. Got out as a Sgt with 11yrs TIS. Waiver has been at NGB for 2 months
Kind of a funny story was at reclass in Maryland for 91E machinist training with the National Guard training unit at Aberdeen. Informal reclass we was there to train 6 weeks and go. Small platoon size. I was just a E5 top enlisted in the class was a a E7. So of course we ran as a platoon accountability and all. We was on lunch break headed for chow . All dif unit patches and 90% of us dep patches and CABs. Enter Di went to give one of my Specs shit going into chow not being in the boot line . Of course I blow on him . He was pissed my speck did not call him drill and was using the reg duty chow line as we was instructed. Im trying to do the IST program, Navy to Army. If the navy lets me go i'm not looking forward to BCT. I've been to so many training commands (Hospital Corpsman Basic, Aerospace Medicine Technician and Field Medicine Training battalion) and deployed (Djibouti, Africa). The only bad thing is I've only been in 3 years almost 4.
You will have to go to BCT if you want to switch from Navy to Army,it’s not an option. The only exception is if you are switching from the Navy seal community to the Army IAW the Army prior service business rules.
So back when basic was hard, 1989, when DS's could actually smoke you, and a ate-up private might go missing for an hour and found by the platoon crying on the ground from some wall to wall counseling by (presumably) a DS, and a few of the DS's and instructors had actually been to Vietnam, well there was a Navy E5 who had crossed over. They put him with us as just one of us. He was our PG. He was sharp, always the first up, the last to go type. Strong, disciplined, our role model. No additional privileges, he bunked with us. But for the duration of training he had to be an E4. He thought the treatment sucked, but was happy to go through it. Now, I rejoined the AF in 2002. Didn't have to do Basic. I just had to show up at the duty station, and they gave me my initial issue and squared me away, then sent to my unit. Vastly different experience..
I'm prior service Navy, active/reserve just under 18 years, was an E6 buy reduction in grade to E5 and leaving for Infantry OSUT on 08MAR22. What should I generally expect? Also, are we allowed to bring a portable power bank? I'm CA Guard as well! Hoping to go OCS after training.
Hey man appreciate your videos. Not much information is out there concerning prior service bootcamp/transfers. I will be transferring from Navy to Army at the end of this year. I have some questions regarding your experience that I’d like to ask is there an email or some way I could get in touch with you? Thanks brother!
One more comment. Can you make a more in depth video like what did the other soldiers think of you? Was it harder or easier or the same as when you first went in? Because you were already in were you held at a higher standard? what about AIT?I just want to lay low if I go in again. I was in for 8 years but have a 6 year break. I am 31 now but don't want to be looked at all the time by the youngsters i mean I want to help them out if i can but want to lay low ha. Thank you. I just really want to know what to expect as a prior service.
I don’t have to go back to basic, but I’ve been thinking of volunteering because there’s so many different things and I’m out of shape. I’m an E5. Literally the thing that’s stopping me is that my baby is nursing and there’s a formula shortage. That might be tmi.. lol Sorry
Thank you for this video. I was army reserve as a mechanic I got out in 2016 and I want to reenlist active duty infantry. I was wondering if I had to start right from the beginning which is what I’d like to do.
As an Infantryman, do something else that will transfer to the civilian world when you get out. But if you really just have a wild hair, go 18X. Shouldn’t be hard for prior service to obtain. Even option 40.
Im on the trail now at Jackson and some of the trainees have said they were told no longer than 5 years. I think it’s 1 or 2 year break to obtain rank. I’m not a recruiter. Just going on what I was told by incoming trainees.
@@dboardjr8873 Hey DS. Has it changed again? The reg (TR 350-6, Ch. 4-13) says three (3) year break in service. I've been out of Active Duty for a few years, so my version of 350-6 might have been updated again.

@@slayer6936 I thought the cut off was 36? Now it's 45? or older?
Great info. I’m 41 going back to Jackson as an E3 after 21 years of civilian life.
@@joeguillory8050 Good luck! The drill sergeants weren’t too sure about me until I passed the first ACFT. Do good on that, and I think you have a much better shot at getting privileges.
@@garywillford how did you get into the Guard at the age of 57?

I’m 49 and just talked to a recruiter. I got ten to go. ACFT should be fine except for the run. I should have traded some barbell time for running time. You got any advice?
This was great, thank you so much! I am currently in the process of reenlisting and it’s been hard to find videos on prior service completing BCT. Hope you enjoy your experience even more the second time around.
PS Marine from ‘07-‘15. I’ll be shipping off to OSUT on Monday. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼 I get good command staff.
How they treating you?
Omg thank you for this!!! There needs to be more of these prior service videos. I'm prior service Army and need to know the details. =]
You’re welcome!
Yeah I'm prior navy and nervous as hell about boot camp I'm going army national guard
Great video. I'm 32 deployed oef 11-12 was out in 2014. Been thinking about re enlisting. Lately. We didn't have any prior service guys when I went through until after basic and our actual OSUT started then we got a couple reClasses but that's it.
Crazy how different this is if you're prior service joining the Marines lol. Great video man!
No such thing as a former marine devil, cmon you know that
I can’t imagine going back through basic training with a CIB and a combat patch and getting treated like shit by slick sleeves.
You’re going from the Air Force to the green beret pipeline? Unless you’re a TACP or something higher speed than that you’re pretty much screwed.
Between 03 and 09 prior svs had WTC. Just blue phase. It was a soup sandwich. But still fun. I did it WSMR 07.
It’s freaking crazy to make priors attend basic. They already earned the title served and proven they have what it takes to be soldiers.
Why make them repeat it , why not a refresher course and be done with it?
Yes you are right,it use to be refresher course but they changed it
I am not sure if it has been stated here, but the TRADOC for PS going through IMT is AR 612-201 Page 32-33. Hope that helps!

I just completed BCT as a prior service Navy nco. My experience was basically the same as the rest of the trainees but I did get my own room.

I'm a Marine prior service for 6 years going to the Army I dont need to do BCT.
(1) Prior service personnel entering the Active Army are not required to attend BCT if they completed Army or U.S.

Small platoon size. I was just a E5 top enlisted in the class was a a E7. So of course we ran as a platoon accountability and all. We was on lunch break headed for chow . All dif unit patches and 90% of us dep patches and CABs.

If your break in service is more than 3 years, you will have to repeat BCT.
@@MattU4970 So it has changed slightly. Now there are waivers depending on need for MOS and rank when they received their DD214. But I’m assuming it’s case by case because I get different stories lol.
What about prior serving National Guard now wanting to go active army. Do I lose my rank? Does the age 35 limit still pertain to me? I’m not concerned about the special treatment during basic. I did basic training as a kid. I can do it again as an adult. My main concerns are the age limit and my rank. E-4 and 14 year break in service.
I got out and have the itch to get back in. My separation is just under three years now, so it looks like I will avoid the stupid. BCT wasn't hard, but I have no interest in going back and doing all that nonsense again, even if it was easier than the first time.
