      It sucked but when you get to your duty station and make new friends that’s the best!! I’m considering going back in. 9 years after getting out (served 6 years).

      I had fun in basic (Army). I kept out of the spotlight and did what I was told. They ended up making me a platoon leader for almost 5 weeks when everyone else was only 3. It was a great experience.

      @@Auniesauce I'm 29 and working on my master's degree (MPA). I want to do the air force reserves or national guard (Utah, or Idaho). I live in Utah but went to BYUI and would relocate if I had to. Any advice on how to get into OTS? Any idea on the selection rate?

    That was very helpful. I've been thinking about joining. I feel like my life is at a dead end place in time. And have a friend who is in the air national guard and he loves it. I have to set up a time with him to go to his recruiting center. It just feels like the right thing to do in this part of my life. I have nothing right now except a skydiving and BASE jumping back round. Which really hasn't gotten me anywhere,as a citizen. So I think I know which path I would take in the air national guard. Maybe like paramedic or a main rigger. Or both.

    3:38 , I enlisted active duty knowing my AFSC before going to basic training, the only people who don't find out their AFSC until BMT are the people who sign for an "Open" contract. Just so nobody is confused. Almost everyone I have met so far signed their contract knowing their job.

    One more question. Do you think it’s better to go enlisted first if you want to be an officer?

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes that's the only way you'll be able to join. Just depends on how your career path looks, what your education is like, and what the hiring unit by you needs. If they NEED officers, maybe you could transition to that pretty easily. If they are full, might be better to go enlisted first to get the time in before commissioning.

    I love your videos! I have recently raised my right hand for a cyber job in the guard that I waited 2 years for. Student flight pre-BMT PT is really difficult for me. I know they try and make it harder than the "real deal", but whats a good regiment to get fit faster? I'm skinny and not very good at physical activity "especially running". The only thing that scares me about BMT is the physical aspect. I know I can do any of the intellectual work involved, but I can't seem to overcome my obstacle of being terrible at the physical facets.

    I’m currently 27, a mom, a teacher, have my masters, and need to get in shape. I have gone back and forth about the air national guard since graduating college. My dad was active duty Air Force for 22 years, so I grew up in a military family. He passed in September, and I have started thinking about joining again. Would my age, being a parent, and my career field make this something I shouldn’t do?

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s very hard to join as an officer, even if you have a masters unless you’re a doctor, lawyer, nurse or pastor. Most start as enlisted no matter what. Joining as an officer is like going straight into the company Amazon with no prior experience and taking on a high level director or manager role. Your best option is to speak to a recruiter and see what the options are in your local area.

    • @gamalielcenteno8217

    I would love to see some more videos! In the process of enlisting now and have some questions about job selection! My recruiter told me only mechanical and electronic jobs were open at Lackland. Can I wait for more to open up? Or will I just have to deal with it? If I chose a job and wanted to change jobs whats the minimum amount of time I have to spend in the first job before I can retrain for the second? I really have no interest in electrical or mechanical jobs I want to go to law school but my recruiter also said personnel jobs and paralegal you have to have prior military experience so Im hoping to find a job that will at least somewhat benefit me in the civilian world.
    thank you so much,

    Something I'm bothered by is the air national guard won't cover all of flight school. I have a bachelor's of science and want to go to flight school. After speaking with an air national guard recruiter he told me it would most likely only cover "up to" 60% to get all of my ratings in flight school and that I wouldn't even have access to the GI until I acquired active duty time which could potentially take years going air national guard. Being that I can expect to pay about 50k for flight school 60% at best means I'd still be paying 20k out of pocket minimum. I just always thought the military's tuition assistance was better than that.

    Loved the video, Aunie! I appreciate that you mentioned future plans/having babies because that's where we're at. For me, at 28, it was either have a baby or join the guard and just like you... I decided to put the guard first and I'm excited for what's ahead. My husband and I both have lots of training coming up but hopefully in the next two years or so we'll get around to starting a family... haha. But anyways, thanks for all the info! I was curious how commissioning worked from enlisted to officer in the guard and you pretty much answered all my questions. Do you think you'll stay Security Forces, or maybe crosstrain again in a few years? I'm guessing after you finish SF training and you're in the position is when you'll make that call. With having kids in the future, are you concerned about deploying? Much love to you, Aunie girl!

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacqueline Coles Thank you so much, Jacqueline!! Yep, you and I are in exactly the same spot. I get asked SO OFTEN when we are going to have babies, and I think, "As soon as I can get all this training over with!!" :) It's just a waiting process. I'm right there with you on it. I really like SFS right now. I'm not sure what doors will open, but I have no plans to leave SFS at the moment. If I'm able to become a Commander at some point, we'll see. To be honest, I'd LOVE to deploy. I'm hoping I'll be able to do that before we have kids. After having children, yes, that might weigh a little heavy on me. But we'll see!

    I'm an active duty airman right now 2a3x3, I test for staff right before separating but I'm considering going into the palace chase program with the end goal of finishing my degree and commissioning. I'd like to know if you can share any details about the exact process of the movement from enlisted to officer in the guard, is it really as simple as applying for a position and then going to OTS? Also what is the minimum commitment for an officer in the ANG?

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Garrett! You've got some great options which is nice. Read this... this is how it went for me: www.auniesauce.com/2017/10/my-interview-process-to-become-officer.html. The commitment is often 6 years.

  • @FSX56
    @FSX56 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there a waiting period like active duty from enlisted to officer? Do I have to fullfill my entire contract until I can become an officer or can I get selected as an officer like half way through my enlistment contract?

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can get selected at anytime. I was 2.5 years into my initial enlistment when I was selected. The big difference if you're in the Air Guard is that if you enlisted into a field with a bonus and then leave midway through your contract, you may have to pay some of that back. All up to you.

  • @thekevykevs

    I am currently enlisted in the Army National Guard and my ETS is coming up in one year and I was wanting to switch service branches and also try for commissioning as well. I already have 2 degrees. I wasn't sure when I should start the process for switching over and if I can go straight from army NG to Air NG with a commissioning or if I switch and continue my enlisted MOS.
    Could you go more in depth about what Air NG OCS consisted of and how long it is?

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, Katherine. Thanks for your email! Good questions... that's something that you'll want to contact your local Air Guard recruiter about and start working on ASAP. It takes time for the paperwork to go through so reach out to them soon. It's typically very hard to come over and commission directly, you have to apply for jobs with a resume and an interview just as you would for a civilian job. So also start looking for openings in the area if that's your plan. I have a whole post about OTS and you can check it out here: www.auniesauce.com/2016/06/air-force-officer-training-school.html

    It is not true that active duty does not know what job they will have until they get to basic training. The only situation in which that is true is if they go in as open.

    I am torn between ANG and Active duty...I have a bachelors (in education in arts and photography) and I am 33 years old. Went to the ANG recruiter and asked about opportunities as a officer and they kinda steered me towards enlisted because my time to get a commissioned is short (I have 1.5 years). I already knew this, apparently no options for officer according to them. They told me the go ANG page is outdated even though weeks ago a lot of jobs seem to have opened up in my area. I don't know if to believe them or not on that.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally understand where you're coming from. It's VERY hard to join the ANG and commission immediately as an officer. You normally have to come in as enlisted and then attempt to commission. The good news is that they CAN do a waiver for you if you want to commission after 35. I have a buddy who is 38 who just was waived in. But he was prior enlisted. I hope that helps a little!

      @ida4587 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aunie Sauce It does help a lot thank you. Do you have any idea about graduate AFROTC ? looking into that too as a last option and last question for now :), can you please explain how do you choose a job in the ANG or Reserves (there's not much information online about it) my recruiter has been vague about it. I was also wondering, what if the jobs available at the time are nothing I want to do, can I check with him later or can he let me know when new openings are available for the job I want and have qualified for (and is available at my State)? I thank you for any information.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not familiar with it, unfortunately. I'm sorry! For choosing a job, after I took the ASVAB and was able to pick whatever job I wanted, I worked with my recruiter (husband) to find the job that fit my interests and one that was open in my area. Personnel was where I found myself going. What I recommend doing is asking your recruiter what jobs are open and then have them give you a tour of that area or go meet with the commander. They're really good about meeting with people. You can also find a lot of information about specific jobs if you google them or at about.com. And YES! You can be put on a waiting list if your preferred job is not available.

      Hi there Jake. Legally, my fulltime job (at a hospital at the time) HAD to work with me. There's an organization called USERRA that stands for military rights. Legally, civilian employers are required to hold your job for you if you leave for up to 5 years for training and/or deployment. My brother-in-law has been away from his civilian job for the last four years on orders out at our base. It's a cool setup. My employer was also, thankfully, really flexible and understanding. I now work fulltime at our base and resigned my position at the hospital after I finished all my training.

    If I were to go ANG and try for a career in cyber (my degree is in business), would I receive enough training to potentially change my civilian career as well? I'm looking to change my life, be part of something greater, and also change my career path. Wondering if I could do this in guard or if I would need to go active duty.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian. Yep, you could totally go into cyber in the guard and receive a TON of training. Most ANG members are able to get an associates degree just by fulfilling a couple core classes and then their basic technical school requirements and professional military education. I was working in fundraising and with the skills I learned in human resources at the guard, I was able to promote as a civilian to a more prominent job in employee wellness at a local hospital. ANG members receive all the same training as active duty, so the benefits are wonderful.

    Thank you for all the great information! I'm prior service Navy and my medical file has sat on someone's desk at MEPS for over a year. It's finally under review and if approved, I'll be joining the ANG. I am 3 classes shy of my degree and your officer information was very helpful. Stay safe out there!

    Hey I just turned 25 years old and Im a college graduate. I have a BS in National Security Studies. I would like to come in as an officer, but they say I cant and I would have to take some test.

    • @Auniesauce
      @Auniesauce  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a test you'd have to take to get in, it's called the AFOQT. Most folks have to pursue the same route I did, which was enlist and THEN commission. The reason is that officer jobs are typically only open to those who are already enlisted. The exceptions are doctors, lawyers, and highly-skilled nurses.

    is it really hard to go from enlisted to officer? they always said it is.

      Alfred Tineo I thought it was difficult. But here I am! It was worth the process. The biggest thing to remember is that it's just like a job interview. It's hard to get picked, but if you do--you're in!
