@@MauveDash Its a long game filled with 2 years worth of things you could do if you played 1 hour a day and even after that you have dlcs and mods. You can have multiple different saves each with a diffrent character and the replay value is phenomenal. It'll take awile to Finnish it but trust me you'll love it
A lot of these were really interesting, and some of them were pretty funny, but it’s also kinda sad. I know that (most) people go to prison for a legitimate reason, but in a lot of ways, it seems like it’s less of a place to keep dangerous people away from others and more so just straight-up psychological torment. I guess I’ve always just assumed it wasn’t bad for the people there because they were hardened criminals, but listening to stuff like this made me realize that they’re just as prone to fear as everyone else- especially that one about the person sleeping in a defensive position, that one made me a little upset to be completely honest.
Yeah, I personally consider prision a failure of humanity and only people who have done awful things should go there. Don't get me wrong, con artists and the like deserve some sort of punishment but I know that even a month In prison would fuck me up for a long time.
The initial idea of prison was to rehabilitate in order to turn them into functional members of society but now it's just used for retribution/revenge and so called "justice"
There is always a reason why someone commits a crime. It is not just black and white, everything is some shade of grey. You don't just go out there and decide to to bad. Maybe you grew up really poor, society treated you poorly, and now you think at least I can get money from robbing a gas station. Those owners have enough money. Or you think if you don't act violently and be extremly angry at everything people would bully you. Or if you don't get angry at the slightest provocation you would feel overwhelmingly helpless and sad because you have a very low self esteem. And because you can't cope with that overwhelming hoplessness you turn to violence. A lot of criminals don't realize how much damage they do. For example the gas station robbery. Some assume they only harmed the owner because they stole some of his money. But they don't realize the owner is insured, he gets his money back, but the young woman who works there is traumatized for life. And her partner and her beginn to have relationship issues. And their young daughter is also a victim, because her mother can't work anymore, they have high health care bills, so they get poorer and poorer and her parents can't care for her as much because of their mental health problems, so she developes her own mental health problems. Instead of just making the punishments harder and harder it would be better to prevent crimes by having a better (mental) health system, by having better and more programms for the poor, such as free activity programms for poor children, having free homework classes in school where they can do their homework in a quiet enviroment with help, programms where not so functioning members of society can turn to for help with finding a home, keeping up with homechores, dealing with the government etc. Having a system where when you can't work or don't find a work get money from the government. And having prisons and jails be more like rehabilitation centers and not like punishments. And of course prisons should be either deprivatized or paid after how many inmates don't get into prison again.
@????????? Thanks for the out-of-nowhere hysterics. Most people aren't in for that. It's usually a short or medium-length sentence like battery, larceny, or drug possession. Subjecting them to THIS kind of environment is completely inhumane and unreasonable.
It sounds like the whole US prison system is a human rights violation. I know that many prisons are privately owned and get more funding if they're really full. And the horror that is solitary cells straight up violates Article 5 of the Deceleration of Human Rights, which states: "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." As social animals, being locked up into solitary confinement for hours or days does serious damage to our minds and well being.
it IS a human rights violation. of course, most people dont care due to ignorance, stupidity, or just being plain assholes, and think that because the prisoners commited a crime (regardless of severity or whether or not they actually did it), that they deserve to have their bodies and minds broken beyond repair before being thrown back into the world with nothing except a criminal record permanently barring them from most jobs. its disgusting, and its so damn easy to fix it and actually help the prisoners get better and be useful to society, but instead the US spends all their money on soldiers and guns for pointless wars thatll never end. seriously, we could be in fucking space by now if the US stopped putting billions into guns that wont ever be used for anything important or meaningful.
it is a human rights violation. in the constitution there's also a line that's on the lines of "slave labor isn't allowed- unless they're criminals in prison" and American police run on systems based on when police were only a thing to capture escaped slaves
The question is what do you do with prisoners that attack try to kill other prisoners? Do you just say oh well to the safety of the others? It's easy to say that but not look at the problem of trying to keep their victims relatively safe
@@Dycedchicken However, it is easy for the power to be abused by guards. It comes back to the privately owned prisons. Let's say that a prison has a 3 warning system before a prisoner is sent to solitary. If the prison gives out lots of these warnings, and in turn, lots of prisoners sent to solitary, they get more government funding as they are seen as "responding to rowdy prisoners". Now, I am no expert in the US prison system, I'm not even an expert in any prison system, and if that's not how it works, tell me. But I'm a little bit sure that solitary confinement is handed out shadily. As well as that, how is sending a violent prisoner into solitary confinement (a place where the prisoner experiences hallucinations, hears voices and loses track of how time has passed) helps in any way at stopping future violence?
2 habits and 2 naggings. Habit 1: sleeping on my back. The cots you sleep on are just metal slab with a sorry piece of worn out cloth as your mattress. I was a stomach sleeper before then, took a while to break that habit. Habit 2. Flushing the toilet while still sitting on it. When you're in a cement room the size of a small living room crammed in with 11 other guys with no ventilation, people tend to get really grouchy of smells. We all took multiple showers daily, partly cause there was nothing else to do, partly cause it was the only place to get some privacy (our shower was in our room in the corner. Had a cement wall to keep the water in, and we prison rigged a shower curtain) but mostly to control the smell of our b.o. The other thing you HAD to do was flush the whole time you where taking a shit. They thought it would make the smell go away. It didnt, often just made it worse cause the water pressure coming back up from the toilet would push the foul air out into the room. Whatever, the bullies made you do it anyway so I did it. Took a while to break that habit. Nagging feeling 1. Walking anywhere without my "colors" Apparently it's very rare, but I just happened to be in one of the few places that separated you by your crime type. As such, you where locked up with "your own kind". They also made you wear a "coat" that allowed anyone to identify your crime by the color it was. So we called them "colors" as in "Hey, they're letting us go to yard! Dont forget your colors this time!" You couldnt leave the room without it. You also had to walk with your head down and hands behind your back everywhere you went. After getting out and walking in public, I felt I'd get in trouble without ha ing my colors and without keeping my hands behind my back. I walked normal, but the thought was still there for the longest time. Nagging feeling 2. "Resources" We wherent given much. 3 pairs of clothes for the weak, a "mat" to sleep on, and once a week commissary. So people who had money would get food and small things from people on the outside (oh how I hated hearing that, "on the outs". Fuck that prison talk!) Well, I'm poor and so is my family, we didnt have money for a 5 dollar donut that cost 50 cents at the gas station. Serious uppricing! I'm crafty by nature, I make things. I hoarded garbage bags to make string. I hoarded toothpaste and toilet paper to make modeling clay. Etc. When I got out, I had a VERY hard time walking through the store for the first time. I would see something and without even knowing what I'd use it for, I would involuntarily jump as if I'd grab it. And I know what you're thinking, and it's wrong. I didnt want the things on the shelves, I wanted the garbage! That broken piece of plastic? That could be scraped on the cement and made sharp for cutting! That rusty lump of metal? It's shiny! You just dont see that behind bars! Its something pretty to look at! Even if you cant find a use, maybe someone else will want it. Took a while before that feeling went away. For the record, I was accused of rape, arrested, spent 9 months in the jail of tehama county, California. They kept trying to get me to take a deal, I kept demanding a trial. They eventually looked at my evidence (8 months later) and realized I had video evidence of my innocence. They eventually released me (another month later) and to this day I still have the paperwork from the court that the judge admitted they never had any evidence on me. I'm now back with my wife and children, and we are rebuilding our lives in texas.

Not prison, but been to county before and there, they soak everything with water, dried ramen noodles, hot food from that night's dinner (whatever there was, lasagna was by far my favorite hot tray to use,) pickles, chips, whatever the hell, and soak it and press it all down in a bag until it's all a semisolid paste, then make jailhouse burritos out of the slam paste, tortillas and cheese spread. DUCKING. SUBLIME.
You used to be able too. In fact I didn’t realise you couldn’t run out of hot water anymore until this came up. (I’ve moved houses a few times, so it’s very likely the house I’m in now can’t run out.)
My friends in prison too and I'm worried about him when he gets out. He's had little real world experience with working and life in general, I hope he can cope when he gets out and has to start life essentially all over at age 30

The part about being defensive of food reminds me of animals, im a zookeeping student and usually animals that are of the lowest rank in the herd will be mean and defensive of their food, one horse would even attack their carer if they tried messing with their food or got too close while they ate, honestly feel sorry for the people who feel as if theres not enough.

I used to be in the Greek military and I identified myself in almost all of them except the fast eating, coffin sleeping position and the fast looking back when I am in the street, I do it when I'm walking in the night or just standing somewhere though.
My boyfriend tried to compare my college experience to his military experience. I was allowed on the grass (The campus was a part of a disk golf course, had volleyball courts we could use, AND often hosted parties on the "West Lawn"). I could take however long I wanted to eat. He tried to compare the dorms to his barracks room and I pointed out that he got AC (granted in Alaska he didn't really need it (or so he claims not too sure about that) and in Missouri he did). He also said he had his own bathroom. Bruh, I'd have killed for AC at some points in the dorms. Ever break a sweat just pooping normally?
Not an ex-con, but a military brat: I eat like a starving person. I have been known to snatch food off of another person's plate (during family meals). When I go to a cafe, I always choose to sit on the "gangster" seat (facing the entrance and exits). I like to see the entrance, and hate when people walked behind me. I don't like when people sat behind me.

I was molested multiple times when I was very young and I really felt the "not letting people get behind you" and the "generally not trusting people" habits. I'm really janked up because of it lol.
13:50 went though the same thing but for different reasons. I was hospitalized for being homicidal and suicidal. The most dangerous thing I could have was a pencil which I could only have when supervised. I spend a year being surprised that people gave me things. I was better but that habit was stuck in my head.
After seeing all this, I just realized one of my former work colleagues might have been a prisoner. He would always be the first in the cafeteria, sit by himself, shovel everything down in a couple of minutes and get back to work immidiately. And he couldn't understand how we could spend 40 minutes eating lunch and relax. His whole attitude was like "I'm nothing and as long as I do what I'm told, there won't be problems" which meant that everyone took advantage of him, poor guy. If you said his name, he would turn around within the blink of an eye and then look DIRECTLY at you in a very cold and creepy way. Also he would have his arms a little bit out from his body and his hands in a claw-like manner.
I guess it depends on what prison you're in. The serial killer who murdered my best friend's daughter took 20 minute showers while he was in the detention centre, (prior to the penitentiary.) During the trial when he tried to do the "poor me" routine, the judge pointed out to him that maybe he should cut down on his 20 minute showers if he wanted more recreation time. He was using up all his time in the shower.

Similar sort of thing but different context, I was in an eating disorder treatment facility for a while and habits I still can’t break are 1) elbows are always on the table- sorry mom 2) if I’m somewhere and not moving, I look for a place to sit down (you’re not allowed to stand for pretty much any length of time) 3) eating at lightning speeds and scraping the plate down 4) I nearly walk out of the bathroom without flushing all the time (you’re not allowed to flush the toilet- the staff has to check it)

In basic training we often got less than 10 mins to eat. In AIT i usually got around 15. Once you’re used to eating at the speed of light it’s near impossible to stop, and 30mins becomes an eternity of meal time. Not saying that it’s ok, but you get used to it
This got me thinking about how good the prisons in Norway are, they have a catchphrase that goes on the lines of “Treat them like your next neighbor.” Or something like that, and it’s honestly the best prison system I know of, I wish there were more like it.

My dad was a navy officer, and I NEVER heard him cuss or use profanity. Once, I asked him about it and he said "The less a person cusses, the more impact it will have when he DOES cuss."
When I watch these things, I find it interesting how time in prison gives you many of the same concerns, habits and phobias that time in the military does.

Got a friend who also was used to it being super loud. I grabbed a couple of those like 15-hour cafe background-noises clips and some others and mashed them and ramped up the noise for him, helped him sleep till he could break the habit :)

I later got comments about eating fast when I ate with other people. 1:00 Are tankless water heaters really common enough for people to ask about that? I’ve never been to prison, but have been in and out of psych wards for suicidal ideation, which is surprisingly similar. I always wake up an hour earlier then I should, because in most psych wards they wake you at about 5:00 to check your vitals, which takes only a minute, but it just becomes so engrained.
I hope that that new dad showed his wife that post. The inability to show your emotions due to any trauma is bad enough. That inability can be so horrible for both people in a relationship. He did the hard work of expressing his feelings, they both deserve to understand what they mean to each other. I hope they both do well with their new daughter.
When my dad got out he started hoarding my grandmas (we lived with her at the time) cigarettes out of anxiety. He didn't smoke, but it made him feel better to carry a few around with him when he was out. He only broke the habit after my Granny went lit into me for stealing from her (I was 6-7 and would hide her cigarettes as way to get her to quit).

The wolfing down food is true. I am not a ex inmate . But I did 4 years in the British Army cadets . It was your meals were timed after meals it was grab your kit we're going out in the field straight away. Been 6 years my parents hate that I am always finished in 5 minutes. I get strange looks at restaurants.
I've never been in jail, but I have some of these habits, especially feeling uncomfortable around people and being very selective about whom I trust. I also don't get my hopes up or get excited about anything until it actually happens. And then I worry that something's going to ruin it. I guess some are just born with weird quirks.
Went to juvenile prison a couple of months ago and many of the stories inside of this video i can relate to. I was in the short-term section of this prison and became sort of like the pod boss because of my height and physique(English isn't my first language if i typed physique wrong). In my country we don't really care about race and all that but there are always groups of people together in the zone. The only rules i forced upon the rest was if you snitch or start a fight without a good reason for it you're gonna get dragged up to the washing room and be punished accordingly. A certain kid from Somalia, 6 years younger than me thought he could boss me and another pod boss around whom i became friends with inside. After i gave him his punishment he held his mouth shut when i told him to shut up whenever he tried to fight with another inmate. I don't incourage violence but sometimes measures are needed for the sake of the other inmates because if i didn't and fights broke out we'd be sitting 24/7 locked in without anything to do like smoking or watching tv. I'm still in contact with one of the kids i took under my protection when i was inside and he's one of the only people i'm still friends with because when everything was over and done most of my friends either thought i was dead or thought of me as some kinda killer. The reason i ended up in prison btw was because someone owed me money and i punched the fucker a black eye and broke one of his toes by accident. Juvenile is even worse in my country because you just feel sad for those lads that think all high and mighty of themselves because they kicked someone almost to death or stabbed someone 'in self-defence' but when they're alone in their cell you can hear them crying for their mother and how sorry they are for getting in such a mess. So let this be an advice, if you ever do something illegal be tough enough to face the consequences and prepare your mind for it when you get out 'cause the world won't be the same as yesterday like the head CO of our section told me.
bruh okay so the “i eat in like 2 seconds” is really accurate for my high school. we have a half hour lunch period, including going through the lunch line. both of my siblings are in college for 3+ years and i’m always the first one done eating, and they hate it.
I relate so much to this comment. Lunch lines take away so much of our time, and I only have a little bit to eat. Back in middle school, I would always finish my food before the rest of my friends sat down, and I'd feel really awkward the rest of the lunch break because someone commented something along the lines of, "Wow, you eat that food as if you'll never see a meal again!" I was diagnosed with a binge eating disorder
I didn't go to jail but I had 1 week juvenile when I was 12 (I fought someone and almost killed them with a baseball bat.. No reasons I just hated the guy) and because of that I never want to share my room because there we we're 4 per room (two bunks bed)

This is kinda unrelated but I had a step dad who was scary. He wasn't exactly a good person and quite frankly I didn't like him. My little brother and sister love him but I could never forgive him for being how he was. He ended up going to jail multiple times and eventually went to rehab. He was able to see his kids again and he asked to see me too but I decided not to. He ended up overdosing on drugs. I dunno what to make of it. So many people talked about how good of a person he was while in rehab and how he would give away the little money he had to friends who needed it. Someone ended up convincing him to do drugs with her and he ended up dying. I dunno if my choice was right or not but I regret it. I really regret it.

Never been in jail, boot camp/military, an abusive relationship, but I do have a habit of raising my hands when someone's hands are above their shoulders cause I once hit my friend in that type of situation, didn't hurt him, but he was confused why and I couldn't explain why I did it.
one of my friends served 6 years for a crime he didn't commit, and he is, in all sense of the word, the definition of pretty boy. on top of that, he lacks strength, relying on things like meridian points which were hard to get to if the opponent was a gang fighter if he has to fight. when he finally got back, i noticed he had the habit of lying on his side, feet as close to his back as possible, and hands on his ankles. either that or flat on his back with his legs crossed. as well as that, whenever getting food, he'd sit a bit away from everyone and near the closest exit, and basically tip the plate straight into his mouth and run off as soon as possible. we also found that whenever taking a shower, even someone brushing against the door on their way down the hallway outside the bathroom would make him freeze immediately and try to muffle his presence or sound bigger than he was. he told me that the only thing from keeping him from k^lling himself in the month after he got out because of all that happened to him was telling himself that he'd find the b^tch who framed him and send him to the hell he went through. i'm helping him find the guy, and his habits have gotten a lot better recently. he does have panic attacks if made to sleep in a room with someone else other than his closest friends on like, a bunk bed on the other side of the room or something so camps are a big big big no no
Good god, it's frightening how much of a parallel there is between having a manipulative and emotionally abusive father and being in fucking PRISON. I'm very quiet and reserved. Only speak when I feel it's meaningful, I don't like small-talk much. I am constantly thinking of whether or not the parental figure I live with will see what I'm doing and how they'd react, even if it's just watching youtube. (I live with my mother now, I moved in with her after graduating highschool.) I have trouble with just coming up with anything to say while in a conversation that I find to be remotely stressful. My mind just goes just blank, and I can't say anything. I just stare. This comes from having to show zero emotion on my face whatsoever, because if I did, it would give my father some sort of leverage and use my emotions against me. There would be hour long lectures of him loving to hear his own voice, and repeating the same shit over and over. All I did during those lectures was stare blanky into his cold, psychopathic, condescending, narcissistic, pale blue eyes. It was all I ever could do. If I said something, he raised his voice and incessently said "You're wrong." Or Some form of that. And last but absolutely not least, because this is getting long. I am terrified of being wrong.

I do a lot of this myself, and I've never been to prison or in the military. There are some possibilities why, but I tend to think it's because I was the girl everybody in my schools always picked on, to put it mildly. I always had to be ready to protect myself and my property. To this day, I'm always far more aware of everything everybody around me is doing than any of them are. When they notice, they think I'm being paranoid, but it's just a habit that doesn't seem to have any ill effects. I'm learning to resist reacting to it, but I don't think I even want to stop being aware of it. Part of me thinks that would be dangerous.
It's the environment for sure. Military, prison, even a rather toxic social environment can cause all of this. Humans adapt. We're adjustable. The situations have striking similarities like not being allowed certain things, having to defend yourself, a chain of command & authority
Right before i watched this there was an ad for a gay romance between convicts and 2 guys are seprated, and when one guy actually finds the other he finds out the guy he used to love got another man but then a hot guy fell in love with the betrayed guy and it was all good

19:17 Considering most of the time I’m in pyjamas, I do this (sometimes with pants but that’s uncomfortable) mind you the only reason I do it is because I live In a fairly big household and most of them are young and it’s easy for older people to walk In without knowing,I also get off the toilet if someone needs to use it(most of the time) as quickly as possible because I can’t take the feeling of people waiting it ,not to mention I spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

My uncle served 2 1/2 years in the MS state penn for production, possession with intent to distribute and child endangerment (meth, y’know?). When he got out he lived in a FEMA trailer that my parents lived in during hurricane katrina on a 2 acre parcel of land he bought for 500 bucks. He was so depressed and struggled just to put food on the table for him and his daughter. I love him very much and he is one of the kindest and most caring people I’ve ever met. Then he got into dealing dope to put food on the table. Prison leaves people without trusting family or friends, without money, without life skills, without hope. It’s bad. It’s real bad. All he could do for a long time was drink booze and smoke 3 packs of Marlboros a day. He held a job but stopped coming to work after he got back into drugs.
I'm in school still, I'm pretty young and have major trust issues resulting that I look behind me at school because people aren't as friendly as they seem. Edit: I'm a trans man, still identifying as female

As a few people pointed out, military life and prison are actually quite similar. I love talking to people who have done time and exchanging stories of basic training (Army) and their stint(s) in prison. There are A LOT of similarities.

You can have multiple different saves each with a diffrent character and the replay value is phenomenal. It'll take awile to Finnish it but trust me you'll love it

A lot of these were really interesting, and some of them were pretty funny, but it’s also kinda sad. I know that (most) people go to prison for a legitimate reason, but in a lot of ways, it seems like it’s less of a place to keep dangerous people away from others and more so just straight-up psychological torment. I guess I’ve always just assumed it wasn’t bad for the people there because they were hardened criminals, but listening to stuff like this made me realize that they’re just as prone to fear as everyone else- especially that one about the person sleeping in a defensive position, that one made me a little upset to be completely honest.

Yeah, I personally consider prision a failure of humanity and only people who have done awful things should go there. Don't get me wrong, con artists and the like deserve some sort of punishment but I know that even a month In prison would fuck me up for a long time.
The initial idea of prison was to rehabilitate in order to turn them into functional members of society but now it's just used for retribution/revenge and so called "justice"
There is always a reason why someone commits a crime.
It is not just black and white, everything is some shade of grey. You don't just go out there and decide to to bad.
Maybe you grew up really poor, society treated you poorly, and now you think at least I can get money from robbing a gas station. Those owners have enough money.
Or you think if you don't act violently and be extremly angry at everything people would bully you. Or if you don't get angry at the slightest provocation you would feel overwhelmingly helpless and sad because you have a very low self esteem. And because you can't cope with that overwhelming hoplessness you turn to violence.
A lot of criminals don't realize how much damage they do.
For example the gas station robbery. Some assume they only harmed the owner because they stole some of his money. But they don't realize the owner is insured, he gets his money back, but the young woman who works there is traumatized for life. And her partner and her beginn to have relationship issues. And their young daughter is also a victim, because her mother can't work anymore, they have high health care bills, so they get poorer and poorer and her parents can't care for her as much because of their mental health problems, so she developes her own mental health problems.
Instead of just making the punishments harder and harder it would be better to prevent crimes by having a better (mental) health system, by having better and more programms for the poor, such as free activity programms for poor children, having free homework classes in school where they can do their homework in a quiet enviroment with help, programms where not so functioning members of society can turn to for help with finding a home, keeping up with homechores, dealing with the government etc.
Having a system where when you can't work or don't find a work get money from the government.
And having prisons and jails be more like rehabilitation centers and not like punishments.
And of course prisons should be either deprivatized or paid after how many inmates don't get into prison again.

It sounds like the whole US prison system is a human rights violation. I know that many prisons are privately owned and get more funding if they're really full. And the horror that is solitary cells straight up violates Article 5 of the Deceleration of Human Rights, which states: "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." As social animals, being locked up into solitary confinement for hours or days does serious damage to our minds and well being.

The question is what do you do with prisoners that attack try to kill other prisoners? Do you just say oh well to the safety of the others? It's easy to say that but not look at the problem of trying to keep their victims relatively safe
@@Dycedchicken However, it is easy for the power to be abused by guards. It comes back to the privately owned prisons. Let's say that a prison has a 3 warning system before a prisoner is sent to solitary. If the prison gives out lots of these warnings, and in turn, lots of prisoners sent to solitary, they get more government funding as they are seen as "responding to rowdy prisoners". Now, I am no expert in the US prison system, I'm not even an expert in any prison system, and if that's not how it works, tell me. But I'm a little bit sure that solitary confinement is handed out shadily.
As well as that, how is sending a violent prisoner into solitary confinement (a place where the prisoner experiences hallucinations, hears voices and loses track of how time has passed) helps in any way at stopping future violence?
2 habits and 2 naggings.
Habit 1: sleeping on my back. The cots you sleep on are just metal slab with a sorry piece of worn out cloth as your mattress. I was a stomach sleeper before then, took a while to break that habit.
Habit 2. Flushing the toilet while still sitting on it. When you're in a cement room the size of a small living room crammed in with 11 other guys with no ventilation, people tend to get really grouchy of smells. We all took multiple showers daily, partly cause there was nothing else to do, partly cause it was the only place to get some privacy (our shower was in our room in the corner. Had a cement wall to keep the water in, and we prison rigged a shower curtain) but mostly to control the smell of our b.o. The other thing you HAD to do was flush the whole time you where taking a shit. They thought it would make the smell go away. It didnt, often just made it worse cause the water pressure coming back up from the toilet would push the foul air out into the room. Whatever, the bullies made you do it anyway so I did it. Took a while to break that habit.
Nagging feeling 1. Walking anywhere without my "colors" Apparently it's very rare, but I just happened to be in one of the few places that separated you by your crime type. As such, you where locked up with "your own kind". They also made you wear a "coat" that allowed anyone to identify your crime by the color it was. So we called them "colors" as in "Hey, they're letting us go to yard! Dont forget your colors this time!" You couldnt leave the room without it. You also had to walk with your head down and hands behind your back everywhere you went. After getting out and walking in public, I felt I'd get in trouble without ha ing my colors and without keeping my hands behind my back. I walked normal, but the thought was still there for the longest time.
Nagging feeling 2. "Resources" We wherent given much. 3 pairs of clothes for the weak, a "mat" to sleep on, and once a week commissary. So people who had money would get food and small things from people on the outside (oh how I hated hearing that, "on the outs". Fuck that prison talk!) Well, I'm poor and so is my family, we didnt have money for a 5 dollar donut that cost 50 cents at the gas station. Serious uppricing! I'm crafty by nature, I make things. I hoarded garbage bags to make string. I hoarded toothpaste and toilet paper to make modeling clay. Etc. When I got out, I had a VERY hard time walking through the store for the first time. I would see something and without even knowing what I'd use it for, I would involuntarily jump as if I'd grab it. And I know what you're thinking, and it's wrong. I didnt want the things on the shelves, I wanted the garbage! That broken piece of plastic? That could be scraped on the cement and made sharp for cutting! That rusty lump of metal? It's shiny! You just dont see that behind bars! Its something pretty to look at! Even if you cant find a use, maybe someone else will want it. Took a while before that feeling went away.
For the record, I was accused of rape, arrested, spent 9 months in the jail of tehama county, California. They kept trying to get me to take a deal, I kept demanding a trial. They eventually looked at my evidence (8 months later) and realized I had video evidence of my innocence. They eventually released me (another month later) and to this day I still have the paperwork from the court that the judge admitted they never had any evidence on me. I'm now back with my wife and children, and we are rebuilding our lives in texas.

Not prison, but been to county before and there, they soak everything with water, dried ramen noodles, hot food from that night's dinner (whatever there was, lasagna was by far my favorite hot tray to use,) pickles, chips, whatever the hell, and soak it and press it all down in a bag until it's all a semisolid paste, then make jailhouse burritos out of the slam paste, tortillas and cheese spread. The part about being defensive of food reminds me of animals, im a zookeeping student and usually animals that are of the lowest rank in the herd will be mean and defensive of their food, one horse would even attack their carer if they tried messing with their food or got too close while they ate, honestly feel sorry for the people who feel as if theres not enough.

My boyfriend tried to compare my college experience to his military experience. I was allowed on the grass (The campus was a part of a disk golf course, had volleyball courts we could use, AND often hosted parties on the "West Lawn"). I could take however long I wanted to eat.
He tried to compare the dorms to his barracks room and I pointed out that he got AC (granted in Alaska he didn't really need it (or so he claims not too sure about that) and in Missouri he did). He also said he had his own bathroom. Bruh, I'd have killed for AC at some points in the dorms. Ever break a sweat just pooping normally?
Not an ex-con, but a military brat: I eat like a starving person. I have been known to snatch food off of another person's plate (during family meals). When I go to a cafe, I always choose to sit on the "gangster" seat (facing the entrance and exits). I like to see the entrance, and hate when people walked behind me. I don't like when people sat behind me.

I spend a year being surprised that people gave me things. I was better but that habit was stuck in my head.

After seeing all this, I just realized one of my former work colleagues might have been a prisoner.
He would always be the first in the cafeteria, sit by himself, shovel everything down in a couple of minutes and get back to work immidiately. And he couldn't understand how we could spend 40 minutes eating lunch and relax.
His whole attitude was like "I'm nothing and as long as I do what I'm told, there won't be problems" which meant that everyone took advantage of him, poor guy.
If you said his name, he would turn around within the blink of an eye and then look DIRECTLY at you in a very cold and creepy way. Also he would have his arms a little bit out from his body and his hands in a claw-like manner.
What a coincidence, my dad gets out next thursday. :>

I guess it depends on what prison you're in. The serial killer who murdered my best friend's daughter took 20 minute showers while he was in the detention centre, (prior to the penitentiary.) During the trial when he tried to do the "poor me" routine, the judge pointed out to him that maybe he should cut down on his 20 minute showers if he wanted more recreation time. He was using up all his time in the shower.

Similar sort of thing but different context, I was in an eating disorder treatment facility for a while and habits I still can’t break are 1) elbows are always on the table- sorry mom 2) if I’m somewhere and not moving, I look for a place to sit down (you’re not allowed to stand for pretty much any length of time) 3) eating at lightning speeds and scraping the plate down 4) I nearly walk out of the bathroom without flushing all the time (you’re not allowed to flush the toilet- the staff has to check it)

In basic training we often got less than 10 mins to eat. In AIT i usually got around 15. Once you’re used to eating at the speed of light it’s near impossible to stop, and 30mins becomes an eternity of meal time. Not saying that it’s ok, but you get used to it

This got me thinking about how good the prisons in Norway are, they have a catchphrase that goes on the lines of “Treat them like your next neighbor.” Or something like that, and it’s honestly the best prison system I know of, I wish there were more like it.

My dad was a navy officer, and I NEVER heard him cuss or use profanity. Once, I asked him about it and he said "The less a person cusses, the more impact it will have when he DOES cuss."

I relate to most of these. I'm 14 and have never been to jail or prison, just grew up in a rough house hold.
Got a friend who also was used to it being super loud. I grabbed a couple of those like 15-hour cafe background-noises clips and some others and mashed them and ramped up the noise for him, helped him sleep till he could break the habit :)

I’ve never been to prison, but have been in and out of psych wards for suicidal ideation, which is surprisingly similar.
I always wake up an hour earlier then I should, because in most psych wards they wake you at about 5:00 to check your vitals, which takes only a minute, but it just becomes so engrained.

I hope that that new dad showed his wife that post. The inability to show your emotions due to any trauma is bad enough. That inability can be so horrible for both people in a relationship. He did the hard work of expressing his feelings, they both deserve to understand what they mean to each other. I hope they both do well with their new daughter.
When my dad got out he started hoarding my grandmas (we lived with her at the time) cigarettes out of anxiety. He didn't smoke, but it made him feel better to carry a few around with him when he was out. He only broke the habit after my Granny went lit into me for stealing from her (I was 6-7 and would hide her cigarettes as way to get her to quit).

It was your meals were timed after meals it was grab your kit we're going out in the field straight away. Been 6 years my parents hate that I am always finished in 5 minutes. I've never been in jail, but I have some of these habits, especially feeling uncomfortable around people and being very selective about whom I trust. I also don't get my hopes up or get excited about anything until it actually happens. And then I worry that something's going to ruin it. I guess some are just born with weird quirks.
Went to juvenile prison a couple of months ago and many of the stories inside of this video i can relate to. I was in the short-term section of this prison and became sort of like the pod boss because of my height and physique(English isn't my first language if i typed physique wrong). In my country we don't really care about race and all that but there are always groups of people together in the zone. The only rules i forced upon the rest was if you snitch or start a fight without a good reason for it you're gonna get dragged up to the washing room and be punished accordingly. A certain kid from Somalia, 6 years younger than me thought he could boss me and another pod boss around whom i became friends with inside. After i gave him his punishment he held his mouth shut when i told him to shut up whenever he tried to fight with another inmate. I don't incourage violence but sometimes measures are needed for the sake of the other inmates because if i didn't and fights broke out we'd be sitting 24/7 locked in without anything to do like smoking or watching tv. I'm still in contact with one of the kids i took under my protection when i was inside and he's one of the only people i'm still friends with because when everything was over and done most of my friends either thought i was dead or thought of me as some kinda killer. The reason i ended up in prison btw was because someone owed me money and i punched the fucker a black eye and broke one of his toes by accident. Juvenile is even worse in my country because you just feel sad for those lads that think all high and mighty of themselves because they kicked someone almost to death or stabbed someone 'in self-defence' but when they're alone in their cell you can hear them crying for their mother and how sorry they are for getting in such a mess. So let this be an advice, if you ever do something illegal be tough enough to face the consequences and prepare your mind for it when you get out 'cause the world won't be the same as yesterday like the head CO of our section told me.
bruh okay so the “i eat in like 2 seconds” is really accurate for my high school. we have a half hour lunch period, including going through the lunch line. both of my siblings are in college for 3+ years and i’m always the first one done eating, and they hate it.
I relate so much to this comment. Lunch lines take away so much of our time, and I only have a little bit to eat.
Back in middle school, I would always finish my food before the rest of my friends sat down, and I'd feel really awkward the rest of the lunch break because someone commented something along the lines of, "Wow, you eat that food as if you'll never see a meal again!"

I didn't go to jail but I had 1 week juvenile when I was 12 (I fought someone and almost killed them with a baseball bat.. No reasons I just hated the guy) and because of that I never want to share my room because there we we're 4 per room (two bunks bed)

This is kinda unrelated but I had a step dad who was scary. He wasn't exactly a good person and quite frankly I didn't like him. My little brother and sister love him but I could never forgive him for being how he was. He ended up going to jail multiple times and eventually went to rehab. He was able to see his kids again and he asked to see me too but I decided not to. He ended up overdosing on drugs. I dunno what to make of it. So many people talked about how good of a person he was while in rehab and how he would give away the little money he had to friends who needed it. Someone ended up convincing him to do drugs with her and he ended up dying. I dunno if my choice was right or not but I regret it.
I really regret it.

Sleeping alone, and it being quiet... I was so used to it never being quiet. People shouting out loud, playing music through there tiny radios, etc.
Never been in jail, boot camp/military, an abusive relationship, but I do have a habit of raising my hands when someone's hands are above their shoulders cause I once hit my friend in that type of situation, didn't hurt him, but he was confused why and I couldn't explain why I did it.

one of my friends served 6 years for a crime he didn't commit, and he is, in all sense of the word, the definition of pretty boy. on top of that, he lacks strength, relying on things like meridian points which were hard to get to if the opponent was a gang fighter if he has to fight.
when he finally got back, i noticed he had the habit of lying on his side, feet as close to his back as possible, and hands on his ankles. either that or flat on his back with his legs crossed. as well as that, whenever getting food, he'd sit a bit away from everyone and near the closest exit, and basically tip the plate straight into his mouth and run off as soon as possible.
we also found that whenever taking a shower, even someone brushing against the door on their way down the hallway outside the bathroom would make him freeze immediately and try to muffle his presence or sound bigger than he was.
he told me that the only thing from keeping him from k^lling himself in the month after he got out because of all that happened to him was telling himself that he'd find the b^tch who framed him and send him to the hell he went through.
i'm helping him find the guy, and his habits have gotten a lot better recently. he does have panic attacks if made to sleep in a room with someone else other than his closest friends on like, a bunk bed on the other side of the room or something so camps are a big big big no no

I am constantly thinking of whether or not the parental figure I live with will see what I'm doing and how they'd react, even if it's just watching youtube. (I live with my mother now, I moved in with her after graduating highschool.)
I have trouble with just coming up with anything to say while in a conversation that I find to be remotely stressful. My mind just goes just blank, and I can't say anything. I just stare. This comes from having to show zero emotion on my face whatsoever, because if I did, it would give my father some sort of leverage and use my emotions against me. There would be hour long lectures of him loving to hear his own voice, and repeating the same shit over and over. All I did during those lectures was stare blanky into his cold, psychopathic, condescending, narcissistic, pale blue eyes. It was all I ever could do. If I said something, he raised his voice and incessently said "You're wrong." Or Some form of that.
And last but absolutely not least, because this is getting long. I am terrified of being wrong.

I do a lot of this myself, and I've never been to prison or in the military. There are some possibilities why, but I tend to think it's because I was the girl everybody in my schools always picked on, to put it mildly. I always had to be ready to protect myself and my property. To this day, I'm always far more aware of everything everybody around me is doing than any of them are. When they notice, they think I'm being paranoid, but it's just a habit that doesn't seem to have any ill effects. I'm learning to resist reacting to it, but I don't think I even want to stop being aware of it. Part of me thinks that would be dangerous.

It's the environment for sure. Military, prison, even a rather toxic social environment can cause all of this. Humans adapt. We're adjustable. The situations have striking similarities like not being allowed certain things, having to defend yourself, a chain of command & authority

19:17 Considering most of the time I’m in pyjamas, I do this (sometimes with pants but that’s uncomfortable) mind you the only reason I do it is because I live In a fairly big household and most of them are young and it’s easy for older people to walk In without knowing,I also get off the toilet if someone needs to use it(most of the time) as quickly as possible because I can’t take the feeling of people waiting it ,not to mention I spend a lot of time in the bathroom.

My uncle served 2 1/2 years in the MS state penn for production, possession with intent to distribute and child endangerment (meth, y’know?). When he got out he lived in a FEMA trailer that my parents lived in during hurricane katrina on a 2 acre parcel of land he bought for 500 bucks. He was so depressed and struggled just to put food on the table for him and his daughter. I love him very much and he is one of the kindest and most caring people I’ve ever met. Then he got into dealing dope to put food on the table. Prison leaves people without trusting family or friends, without money, without life skills, without hope. It’s bad. It’s real bad. All he could do for a long time was drink booze and smoke 3 packs of Marlboros a day. He held a job but stopped coming to work after he got back into drugs.
I'm in school still, I'm pretty young and have major trust issues resulting that I look behind me at school because people aren't as friendly as they seem.

As a few people pointed out, military life and prison are actually quite similar. I love talking to people who have done time and exchanging stories of basic training (Army) and their stint(s) in prison. There are A LOT of similarities.
