What a high handicapper thinks about new clubs vs older clubs, blades (ish) vs cavity backs.

I've been playing on & off for 50 years, with the last 15 years been mostly off. I'm retired now and trying to restart. I was always a hack that struggled to keep it under 110. I have really been enjoying the youtube channels of high handicappers as it shows me what clubs can really do in the hands of regular humans instead of the low handicappers that could outshoot me if they were using a shovel.

Great to see a high handicapper reviewing clubs, don't trust pros reviewing clubs, always think they have a keen interest in the manufacturers. I'm also struggle with the 5iron(ping g25) hit 1 out of 3 good the other 2 are daisy cutters. Keep the club reviews going.

Keep it going my man. Love the hard work you're putting in. You're one of the only dudes starting with P790s. I've been getting advice not to go with P790s but with game improvement irons. You're real proof that hard work can definitely do well with those irons as a starter. Love to see more content on those irons from you man. Cheers.

Thanks Daniyees 👍 They're definitely not as forgiving as game improvement irons but they make me concentrate on strike more which I think will pay dividends in the future 🤞

Thanks for posting. I hit the old Big Bertha irons as well as I do the modern ones. I like how my old Big Berthas feel too. I own some blades too. I hit them about the same. The only thing with my blades if I miss hit them it stings my hands which I don’t notice with the Big Berthas. So not only do I make a bad shot you feel it too literally.

I played with the GBB tungsten/titanium irons in the rch96 graphite shafts for 8 years. I loved everything about them and they got me to perfect my swing and figure out how to play golf. Excellent beginner clubs and recommend to anyone starting. Then I moved on to the p790’s 105 dynamic gold steel. These are the clubs I will keep a very long time, my swing speed was too fast for the berthas at this time why I switched. Your yardages seem off quite a bit, recommend staying with the GBB for a while more.

Came across your channel today, loving it so far and you have a new sub. Just gotta say if you are upgrading from 2004 to the 2020s+, the technology will be a great improvement no matter the brand. I'd take the Cobra f9s over the 790s as a high handicapper (tried them both), more forgiveness by far and stronger lofts for distance. I used the F9s and went from 19 to 13.4 in 2 seasons (no lessons, practice once a week and 1 hour prior to rounds, played golf 2x a week), FOR ME it was the best buy in golf irons I ever made.

I'm in my late 50s and started playing 4 months ago after not playing for well over 40 years since I was 14 years old ( As yet don't even have a handicap other than, having to hit a ball with a club) I bought Callaway x12s for £60 off ebay along with A 2010 Mizuno SP630 Driver and TaylorMade jetspeed 3HL wood and an RBZ 5 wood from around 2016 The woods cost about the same again. So i'm currently into my clubs for about £140 and all in for under £250 including Bag,Shoes, Trolly, Balls, Tees and so on.
I'm Currently Hitting( Carry) my 7 Iron 130yrds my 5iron 150yrds and my 3iron 170 and I managed a 97 last timeI played 18 holes a month ago. (So far I've played 5rounds18 holes and 6 rounds of 9 holes at a par3 course (which ironically is harder as you must hit the greens or you're in trouble ) When I learned to play as an 8 year old back in the early 1970s Cavity backed clubs were a new thing(that I never had) my clubs were bladed and you felt even the slightest mishit and if you shanked one it would rattle your arms and, your fingers would be numb for the next 30 minutes.( So you learnt not to keep doing it pretty fast) What I've found with the Callaways is that they feel like you are hitting pencil erasers rather than golf balls if you mishit them and when you hit them centre you feel almost nothing.
TBH I see little point in my buying New clubs till i'm below 16HC although.
There is simply no point me going out a spending £500 on a fitted driver to hit it 10 yards further until my ability is such to take advantage of that driver

I’ve been playing 40 years ,I don’t think that the golf range is the best place ,except for learning to be more consistent ,the balls aren’t the best ,in my first few years I went from 120 down to the low 80s ,my first ever real game in a social clubhc and I won the day ! I was given a 16 hc ,and I was hooked, and won many games for a few years ! but I had the worst slice that you have ever seen ! But had a pb 4 over ,without a driver ! One iron! And played the next two years couldn’t hit under 100 , 1990 ,in 1992 I got my first ever lesson and it was bad advice, really bad ,but then I got another lesson from from a truly great teacher, and I still remember what he said ! Went from 16/down to 9 ,I was using pfg forged irons a ping putter and a Wilson killer whale ,and $1.29 hot dot balls ,! I could count the bad shots on one hand 30years old ! Stopped playing for 3 years ,kids ,come back and started again, today I play of an average 15 hc for at least the last twenty years, just don’t have the time to practice or am happy that I can still win every now and then ! Last week I hit an 82 and won this week I shot a 94 and lost ! Today I’m using the ping g430 driver ,a really good ping putter, and chipa ,srixon zx5 irons forged ,srixon wedges ,and a mac daddy, and and old adams 3 fw srixon balls soft feel ,so my opinion is that golf is an evolution, which I love ! I still hit the ball about the same distance that I did 40 years ago,but I don’t slice any more thank god ,cheers love your show … 😊

Take a look at the Cobra one length hybrids. I'm using standard irons 7-SW and using 3 one length hybrids to replace the long irons. I use them to replace my 6, 5 and 4 irons. I'm drastically more consistently from 155 to 195 ish yards.
