You may already know this, but for others who may be reading this, the Tucson police are understaffed because of the relentless demonization of them by the media and left wing extremist who called for "defunding the police" (the violent summer of 2020). Tucson didn't even have to defund (I'm not sure if they did or not), but the cops I spoke to said no one wants a job that suddenly now has such low esteem associated with it.

This is true, cops will not go to a car accident, unless a person is critically injured or there is a death. Most places are like this too, if people get a dent or minor damage, both insurance companies will do the negotiations. Can you begin to imagine if cops answered every non-fatal or minor accident call ? There wouldn't be enough officers to cover all of the other real emergencies of every other genres ! People just need to focus, be kind to others by driving defensively, watch the speed limits, stay off your cell phones, don't drink and drive. Use your brain, stay off drugs, remembering that tomorrow is never promised. Don't rush around allow extra time.

I have lived in Three Points for 21 years. I am all over town daily / doing Uber.. I know this town very well. I am deeply in Love with it here! The one thing I wish Tucson would repair is the potholes. Some of these will destroy a vehicle. I have picked up a few rider who had to have their car towed to the repair shop after going thru one and losing a tire, rim and other parts.. We do have many homeless people, even more lately. Its a sad reality here...

I kived in Tucson 7 years ago. Then i went to Alaska for a few years. I just came back not even 2 months ago, i got jumped by a group of teens, everyday people steal from the gas station and recently a dude broke the glass in the door entrance and stole a bunch of tobacco, saying he had a gun. Idk man, it wasn't this bad 7 years ago i swear. And the police?? OMG... I'm not even gonna start. All i can say is they are one of the WORST, possibly the worst, police force I've ever come across. Everything was better when i was younger. There weren't as many homeless, illegals, snobby teens, etc. I have way more respect for Anchorage now, holy cow. And I'm usually a pretty happy person and optimistic about most things, but this is just undeniably bad

I feel you on the police angle. From Tucson becoming world famous for being a predator haven because the police do their best to ignore them, to nearly being T-Boned by someone driving a Sheriff's vehicle with their lights off at 4am to the time I had to do a food delivery to some officers less than 30 ft away from an active hostage situation where I could see weaponry, I've certainly seen many shortcomings of common sense with them.

Lived there for 20 something years. Then left to live on the road and random tiny towns most had less than 20,000 residents some less than 500 😂🤷‍♂️ when I finally went back to Tucson after almost 7 years I see that the Pueblo has gone to crap it is beyond ridiculous had dudes trying to steal my 80k truck where in some of the towns I’ve lived in I can leave my truck running with the doors unlocked and no problem. Even had dudes tried to pretend they were gonna pull a gun on me. Which is really bad because even though I always legally carry you’re putting me a law abiding citizen in a situation where out of fear I could face a case. So yeah F Tucson I’m leaving again 😂🤷‍♂️

On the law enforcement portion - If you live outside of the city limits, you will should be fine. PCSO and the other police departments (Not TPD), have really quick response times. I’ve called PCSO for a low priority incident and I had two cars on scene within 10 minutes.
Tucson does get some redemption in its fire department however. TFD is amazing and has really fast response times, and they are able to send more than enough resources to provide the best of care.

with that said, I am not a professional in that field, nor do i ever pretend to be. i know water does scare a lot of people (or rather, lack thereof), so, great point!

Keep in mind the largest employer in Arizona is the Department of Corrections. In other words, very little is done to prevent crime, help addicts/homeless people, or give opportunities to rehabilitate anyone with a criminal record to reenter society successfully. Then add the border proximity to the equation and it's not hard to see why Tucson has the problems it does.

So, there are plenty of police officers here, but they're constantly put on patrols of specific sectors of town and are being given traffic stop quotas in order to assuage the public into thinking there are fewer issues on the road. This is to the point where they're almost never sent out for anything that isn't absolutely newsworthy, and i do mean newsworthy. Most of the major shootings on campus and in gated communities have come after weeks of prior knowledge.
All of this aside, the major issues here are all environmental factors on health because Tucson is definitely one of the least habitable yet still properly inhabited zones in the US.
For reference, most of Tucson is a 13-D growing zone for crops, meaning it's pretty much a few marks from being one of the most wasteful places in the US to grow produce.

Distracted driving is definitely a big factor too. In my personal experience, it hasn't been the reason for any of my/my wife's close calls. It's been due to elderly. Undocumented w/ no insurance doesn't really play a factor when it comes to vehicular deaths.

I feel like Arizona has the worst drivers in the country (and I grew up in California, so that's saying something). Doesn't surprise me that cops don't respond because I rarely see them anywhere! I witness on the daily that a large portion don't obey traffic laws. Democrat sanctuary city, proximity to the border, common big city issues all contribute to lots of Tucson's issues. Id rather drive around Tucson than PHX maybe because I used to live in Tucson. I think most drivers nowadays are bad has nothing to do with age everyone is in a hurry they don't care. Part of Tucson's problem is its grown to big for the traffic that goes thru it. There's no real fix with the exception of talk of by passing the city entirely which will probably happen 30 to 80 miles from the city. That happens and Tucson might be a little better to drive in but the economic factor will then come into play as there is no real industry in Tucson you have the air force, border patrol, Raytheon, Some mining, and some health care. but no real sustainable big industry. Wouldn't count on Amazon they may have a lot of worker's but the pay is not great. Motorcycle no big deal they chose to ride them they also chose not to wear a helmet the stats don't line up very good even if you wear a helmet. Same with those who ride bikes why on earth do you think its a good idea to ride a bike on city streets?
Back in the early 2000's the housing market went sky high there then crashed like everywhere but the houses are still only $80K houses being sold for $300K+ like all big city's its quickly becoming a cesspool.

I love Tucson, but I have an ancesterial bias.
One weeks pay for one months stay!
We have a baseline for wages but not accommodation.
This makes no sense and simply doesn't work.
The average lowest rent in 2022, ranged from $1,200 to $1,500 per month in many places.
The monthly income, based on the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour for a full-time job of 40 hours per week,,amounts to around $1,256.96 per month before taxes.
HUD's Definition of Affordable Housing: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines housing as affordable if a household pays no more than 30% of its income on housing costs, including rent or mortgage, utilities, and insurance.
This cannot be done in todays rental market.
We need to mandate that all new multifamily complexes include a percentage of baseline units (300 Sq Ft) that can ONLY rent for 40 hours net pay at minimum wage.
Eligibility of these units would be capped.
When the persons income exceeds +X% (determined by local authority) of minimum wage they are expected to move on to a market rate unit.
This will eliminate the need to subsidize market rate units and create a viable option for those on fixed incomes as well.
