It’s a great game, but the Clubhouse version is missing key ingredients (doubling cube, points/cash) that really set it apart. It’s like Holdem, it will teach you to play, but the implementation on Clubhouse isn’t really what makes the game great.
@@Beefchief2000 I know you can play with the doubling cube, but I'm not sure if you can do that with random people. I have certainly seen a video with the doubling cube though.
A doubling cube (and cash wagers) makes backgammon infinitely more interesting. One of the better games out there! Edit: Proper backgammon also gives you double or triple points based on if you win with your opponent on the bar or if you can with with them getting any pieces off. Again backgammon without points or cash is kind of like Holdem without cash. You need the stakes and/or points on the line to really get pogged.
Ryan there are a few basic strategies you missed. The first one is in the early game, 3-1, 4-2, 5-3 and 6-4 are the dream because it allows you to double stack your house with the 5 stack at your house number 6 and the 3 stack left of it. This puts pressure on the opponent to leave with his 2 pieces immediately else he'll be trapped in there for a long time. Second, the doubles can be used to double stack your house very efficiently. Third, there are pseudo safe spaces that a single piece can take because if the opponent wants to send you back he will discover one of his pieces, therefore leaving himself open for punishment. Backgammon is a game of calculated risks and probability, and a skilled player can beat a lucky player 99% of the time. I've played it since I was 4 years old and it's a great sport.
Thought you wouød be a backgammon person since you play chess. I love them both but backgammon is such a chill game. Would love to see more of this game and see how you would progress in the game!

Northernlion, I comment here to up your revenue and defend the sport of kings. luck is a feature of the game, but it's about playing around luck and when it's worth risking something on an outside chance to set up for something stronger later. I'm no expert, I've played a bit since I was young, but skill is a big part of it. This is the ideal game for venom spitting sessions in the park with coffee.
Check out the video about the Royal Game of Ur, it does seem very much like the precursor to backgammon. Though personally I think it has better gameplay having seen it.. but I hear backgammon is better for betting according to comments here, so that's probably why it became more popular
You know, I never understood backgammon... this has completely changed my mind on the game some 32 years into life. I seriously always hated this game when I would try to play it as a kid. I was so confused. Didn't realize I was just that dumb.
It's a game about manipulating rng to the best of your ability to create the highest chance to win you can. You have to play in a way that requires the least amount of luck to win, and there are definately strats to do that, such as rushing the furthest pieces away from danger as soon as you can, and building "doors" ( Stacks of at least 2 pawns ) to restrict the spaces your opponents pieces can move to. By far, the best thing about backgammon is the trash talk that comes with playing against a good friend. To me, the social aspect is where the real fun is.
Backgammon really loses a lot of its luster when you're not betting. It really is designed for a betting game, the most interesting mechanics have to do with risk.
It always made sense to me, because rolling doubles "doubles" your dice. Get it? I dunno. I was always the one (1) kid in my class who actually knew how to play backgammon, let alone was good at it.
My dad had a pretty nice set and we used to play pretty regularly when I was a kid (middle to high school). Sadly these videos came out too late for me to remember he had the set and get it before it was donated with his other belongings when he passed away.
I have never played backgammon before, but I assume the play Nathan was going for when he was stacking a bunch of pieces on one area instead of moving closer (14:17), was so if he got doubles of that number, he could reliably pocket a lot of chips at once.
I play backgammon pretty frequently on my Switch in the evening. Though I'm located in Queensland, Australia, there's at least usually a few players on Tokyo time that want to play, though I usually still have to wait a little before someone joins in. It's a big shame that the online part of the game doesn't let you double, but playing against the AI it does. Hopefully there'll be an update some day that includes doubling. It would be great if there was a dedicated backgammon game for the Switch with an online option. I'd purchase it right away 😃
Cool! From where I am we have three different versions of backgammon. The one played here is the one we call πόρτες (doors). Now I'm wondering, are there any other versions of backgammon in North America, or is this the only one most people ever hear of?
The only other one I personally know was called acey-deucey where I was raised. You don't start with any pieces on the board, and instead roll to enter them in the starting area; a roll of 1-2 lets you move the 1 and 2, then name any doubles and take that, and *then* take another turn - but only if you can legally use the 1-2. Otherwise it plays pretty much like this version.
Yo I know this might not be the forum for it, but I am a pumpkin farmer who recently decided to diversify a little bit. With the new crop, I noticed something kind of weird going on. Every time I'd try to harvest them, these little milk caps fall out and the crop is ruined. I don 't know if a found a kid's treasure hoard buried in the new field or something, but I'd really like to figure it out. Does anyone know how I can stop these Pogs from falling out of my gourds?
NL let me just say that I've noticed you've stopped assuming pronouns for people you play online and are using "they" instead even when someone has a traditionally-gendered name like Trent and I really, really appreciate that it's a thing you've done.
He ragequit turn three because he found out his opponent was the "regionaly significant" mobile esports legend "Northern".
I laughed out loud so hard on this.

I completely agree with you about the doubling cube. It speeds up the game particularly when playing a 5 or 7 point match.
