I really like David Coverdale, as in Deep Purple he really took the band in a very professional way, but Ronnie James Dio singing "mistreated" (in Rainbow my most beloved and favourite heavy metal band of all time but only with Ronnie James Dio as lead singer) is just the power of thunder rumbling on the horizon ahead of the storm.
This song was written for Coverdale and he sings it as he feels. Dio is my favorite singer but I don't like the way he says mistreated "too quickly", you can't feel the pain the song is talking about.
Mistreated - Coverdale Masterpiece. DIO - is GOD level Singer. DIO represents this song proudly, respects original arrangement and vocal line, but Coverdale in this case is over all and always will.
As I think, Coverdale had his peak shape from even 78 to 93. If you can, plaese, listen to a Whisper a Prayer for the Dying. It's kicking ass. However, in the Mistreated live Dio destroys everything, however David also matches a level of top vocalist. Also, let me tell that DC is my favorite frontman.

Why would it surprise you? After all Dio has sang not in 1 not in 2 but 3 Bands that has influence Countless of bands and has had 3 classic Albums one with each..Rainbow Rising, Heaven and Hell, Holy Diver! Not one single Singer has been able to do that in Metal or any type of music for that matter!

Both are incredible for the direction each of the singers / bands decided to take this song. Love both. However, in my opinion I think this song from the Rainbow 1977 Munich concert is the vocal highlight for Dio's career. This song was performed to perfection in this concert.
I agree! But I am very biased. Saw DP in 74 and Rainbow the On stage tour and the famous 77 Munich concert in the Circus Krone. Grew up in Munich in the 70s.

@@ИгорьПавлов-п5д Fakenews, from my knowledge of vocal physiology and the assessments that were made by other renowned vocal critics as well, Dio had an impeccable and extremely healthy vocal technique, the vocal control and muscle dominance he had was excellent and he always sang correctly, with highs. well controlled and he had complete control over his voice, he didn't have any vocal friction until he was 68, a clear example, he reached his highest whistle / head voice already at over 65 and he could probably sing without problems for much longer, plus his health problem and the cancer he had twice, vocally harmed him and the last one ended up being fatal

I think Coverdale is more in essence of this blues song and Dio is singing this with assertiveness and authority. So in effect we have a duality here. What a fantastic comparison. My top favourite 3 are "Mr Crowley" live, "mistreated" live and "July Morning" live. Sometimes cant get them out of my head! Lol.
Ronnie James Dio was the finest singer of all time. Contrary to his fantastic collegues from other bands, he was a warrior, feeling of strenght, and sharpness, and power always was in his voice. Even in delicate, subtle ballads. Some will call it a blasphemy, but for me it was Dio who made Iommy's guitar truly heavy. His brutally precise and Sharp as a razor voice squeezed lead from that old Gibson SG. He was the Best!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Dio a better singer, technically and with great range and all, yes. But the song was better sung by David. Hands down. He feels the song, the pain and delivers it to the audience. It is not about singing perfectly, it's about the feeling.
Two different takes on an amazing song. I saw Dio on the '77 tour so probably a biased toward him but saw Coverdale singing with classic Whitesnake when he'd matured a bit from the Deep Purple Burn tour and he was pretty sensational on Mistreated in that era.
This is Coverdale's song...he wrote the bloody song and, therefore he set the standard on how it should sound. Secondly, at the time the song was written, David Coverdale was only 23 years old and this live performance is from California Jam, 1974. The live performance where Ronnie sings is from 1977, I believe, which makes Ronnie 35 at the time. It is an enormous difference in terms of full maturity of the tone, range, expression, attitude and every other aspect of performance. Take David's live performance of that song from Whitesnake era, from HAMMERSMITH...or DONINGTON....such a power and presence. One more important difference is that Ronnie was a tenor and David is a baritone. DE GUSTIBUS ET COLORIBUS NON DISPUTANDUM EST.
Yes Coverdale was not near his full potential, and at his first concert infront of 400k people, think it was quite late in the show, like the song number 12-13, but anyway this raw blues feeling he gives here is for me the original. Dio is a masterpiece but this comparison is not quite right.

I'm not sure what the Dio fans out there are basing their opinion on but the song is called 'Mistreated'. Coverdale sings it like he's been hit by a Kenworth while Dio is on the end of a wet lettuce. Silky smooth vocals isn't what this song needs. The rawness in Coverdale's version is what makes it a classic.
You can’t say they are both equal. Coverdale is great but dio is on a whole other level. Dio made this song better with his vocal ranges and performance. That is saying something.
Anyway, David Coverdale, Jorn Lande and Dino Jelusic are the greatest vocalists I've ever had the pleasure of hearing sing in my 40 years as a rock fan. Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie Dio, Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury complete the TOP 7 of all time, in my opinion.

I would put Ian Gillan on that list. He has an amazing vocal range. To me Deep Purple isn’t Deep Purple without him. Best DP consisted of Lord, Blackmore, Glover and Paice with Gillan singing. ✌️❤️
It's worth noting that the arrangements are different, the Rainbow version is faster and heavier. I prefer it over the DP version. And yes, Dio wins this one. He's more capable at extending notes and punching them just as hard at the end of the note, and not trailing off. Coverdale quickly backs off a couple end-of-the-verse notes that Ronnie holds out much longer. And Dio has that crystal clear tenor voice at the center of his performance, and chooses when to get gruff and growly. Coverdale is sort of gruff throughout, with that "bluesy" edge the whole time. RJD has better tonal range and control of his voice.
These two are more close each other than, say, Dio and Halford, or Gillan. Both are great in this song, though my favourite is Ronnie of course. He is in another league obviously.

Coverdale is bas-baritone ( as a voice type). Dio is tenor. For Coverdale is very hard to sing în this tessitura. Thats the reason, he always pushed the limits of his voice to falsetto range ( trying hard to keep a full round and stable distorted sound). For Dio is rather easy to sing this ( thats why he plays with "coloratura") because it is in the natural range

I think DIO has 1 of the most powerful voices in all of Rock music, he's unreal high notes listen to the song "Shame On The Night" off Holy Diver. Coverdale also has a great voice , each and every singer and band is great in their own right. So no one can say one is better than the other. These comparisons are always a matter of individual opinion. I'd put both singers in my top 5 rock vocalists - both amazing vocalists we are blessed to have. As an all rounder, throughout the career, in terms of power, diversity, range, etc I'd put Dio #1. I'd also put Blackmore as my best guitarist in history as well, again judged on a whole range of criteria (and I have a top 100 guitarists!) However, on this specific occasion, for this specific song, I'd pick Coverdale (at his best) to sing this. The best version I heard Dio do was for Rainbow in the 1976 Live in Germany album, but Coverdale did a version at the Reading Festival in 1980. It was broadcast via BBC's Friday Rockshow at the time (Tommy Vance), but I picked a digital version of it up. Coverdale put so much emotion into it technically it was all over the place, but I could have sworn he'd just found his wife in bed with his entire family. So much raw emotion went into it, and the entire band, especially with Moody and Marsden on guitar, just wound it further up. So on this specific occasion, for this specific song, my dream performance team wouldn't be my number 1 singer or guitarist.

Both have their own styles, and are great singers. Mistreated is a true test of a singer, and both excel at it.

Yes Coverdale was not near his full potential, and at his first concert infront of 400k people, think it was quite late in the show, like the song number 12-13, but anyway this raw blues feeling he gives here is for me the original.
Dio is a masterpiece but this comparison is not quite right.

I saw both of these done live but this is Coverdale’s song. I think his emotion is what the song is about.
I'm not sure what the Dio fans out there are basing their opinion on but the song is called 'Mistreated'. Coverdale sings it like he's been hit by a Kenworth while Dio is on the end of a wet lettuce. Silky smooth vocals isn't what this song needs. The rawness in Coverdale's version is what makes it a classic.

I would put Ian Gillan on that list. He has an amazing vocal range. To me Deep Purple isn’t Deep Purple without him. Best DP consisted of Lord, Blackmore, Glover and Paice with Gillan singing. ✌️❤️

It's worth noting that the arrangements are different, the Rainbow version is faster and heavier. I prefer it over the DP version. And yes, Dio wins this one. He's more capable at extending notes and punching them just as hard at the end of the note, and not trailing off. Coverdale quickly backs off a couple end-of-the-verse notes that Ronnie holds out much longer. And Dio has that crystal clear tenor voice at the center of his performance, and chooses when to get gruff and growly. Coverdale is sort of gruff throughout, with that "bluesy" edge the whole time. RJD has better tonal range and control of his voice.

Unless you are deaf, it seems clear Dio has the superior singing voice. His range is much broader.

Coverdale is bas-baritone ( as a voice type). Dio is tenor. For Coverdale is very hard to sing în this tessitura. Thats the reason, he always pushed the limits of his voice to falsetto range ( trying hard to keep a full round and stable distorted sound). For Dio is rather easy to sing this ( thats why he plays with "coloratura") because it is in the natural range

I think DIO has 1 of the most powerful voices in all of Rock music, he's unreal high notes listen to the song "Shame On The Night" off Holy Diver. Coverdale also has a great voice , each and every singer and band is great in their own right. So no one can say one is better than the other. Music is 100% opinion, what you like I may not it's just whats more appealing to your ears. RIP Ronnie James Dio

These comparisons are always a matter of individual opinion. I'd put both singers in my top 5 rock vocalists - both amazing vocalists we are blessed to have. As an all rounder, throughout the career, in terms of power, diversity, range, etc I'd put Dio #1. I'd also put Blackmore as my best guitarist in history as well, again judged on a whole range of criteria (and I have a top 100 guitarists!) However, on this specific occasion, for this specific song, I'd pick Coverdale (at his best) to sing this. The best version I heard Dio do was for Rainbow in the 1976 Live in Germany album, but Coverdale did a version at the Reading Festival in 1980. It was broadcast via BBC's Friday Rockshow at the time (Tommy Vance), but I picked a digital version of it up. Coverdale put so much emotion into it technically it was all over the place, but I could have sworn he'd just found his wife in bed with his entire family. So much raw emotion went into it, and the entire band, especially with Moody and Marsden on guitar, just wound it further up. So on this specific occasion, for this specific song, my dream performance team wouldn't be my number 1 singer or guitarist.
