I owned a GPZ 1100 for a few years. Bought it around 1999 from a dealer for real good price because it had a salvage title. I think it was salvage because the fairing was probably damaged. I never found any marks on the frame, engine etc. it was so smooth, and sounded like a small jet engine with the original exhaust. There is a road near where I live that has a straight that is a bit over a mile long, no houses or cross traffic, but probably some deer living near by. One day, feeling a little frisky, I goosed the throttle and looked down a few seconds later and the speedometer was hitting 130. I thought to myself, I’m going to hurt myself, and closed down the throttle some. The main problem I had with it is that the engine was sooo smooth and quiet that I really had minimal sense of speed on it. For me, it was an amazing bike. Personally, I would not mind one again. Thanks for your story.

I definitely agree that the GPZ1100 was fast and smooth and gave a minimal sense of speed. I would call it sneaky-fast. But that sense of speed was what I was looking for in my younger days. And if it had handled easier, I might have kept it. 😉

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 I agree with the sneaky speed. That was one of the reasons I eventually sold it, and, laugh if you will, bought a used Harley Sportster. With that, you always know when you’re going 60MPH or more.

      @jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 ปีที่แล้ว

@sgvern1 No doubt. That's why I now gravitate to the vintage bikes. Like the Sportster, they feel really fast at much lower speeds. They are also more visceral to ride, which I like. 🙂

I had an '02 ZZR1200. Maybe it wasn’t sneaky fast so much as it was plain outright fast. It was big and heavy and required you to be 100% ready every time you threw a leg over it. It was a handful in the city but on the highway the thing was in its element. It would cruise triple digits effortlessly and without warning. I sold it and bought a 650 Versys for self preservation.

With the 36l Givi side cases and 52L top, it's a perfect hooligan tourer. Just launched in front of everyone and leave them scratching their heads. It has the traction to jump three bike lengths on just about anything except maybe a Vmax. It wasn't hard to go up a jet size and route those fake scoops to functional air box inlets. It almost hits 170. ZX-11 front fender, surface mount front blinker mod, 4 inches off the screen. 4/1/2 cherry bombs. The 'black' one is actually green. And yeah that pink lettering came off before the first fill up.
A bag of Ice and a 12 pack in the top case and you can wheelie with out thinking. Bare, it was really hard to get it up ... until the Michelin pilot sports came around.

I have one and absolutely love it, 1996 UK model. It has a jet kit in it and a full stainless delkevic system which produces a very lovely noise, power in every single gear at any speed. previous owner had it at 130hp odd at the wheel. Only problem is the lack of luggage options which may be the reason I sell it on, but I have a VFR800 5th Gen in the garage also which carries all my luggage so for now I'm keeping it for that smell, simplicity and visceral feeling that newer bikes sadly lack. May get another blackbird we'll see. Great video Jon thumbs up from me.

I just bought a pristine 1996 ZX1100 and although it has GPZ decals the title says ZX100E. The GPZ decals look great but mine is black so I can understand why you wouldn't want to them on a red bike. I've only ridden it a few times but so far I'm in love. For a nearly 30 year old bike it's an absolute beast. Anyway thanks for the video 👍

Hi Jon, Great video, well made. I have that very bike. A very under rated machine, always lived in the shadow of the ZZR1100 (ZX-11) I think. I get what you are saying about the weight, it is a heavy beast especially with a full tank of Petrol but the engine is fantastic. Even after 26 years, theres lots of power in any gear all the time. I hardly go over 6k RPM, no need. Its an ideal bike for 2hr+ motorway / 2ndry roads. The weight on the motorway is a benefit if there are crosswinds and the bike sure has presence.
I think the ergonomics (for me) are excellent. It can get hot in town traffic. Out on the road its effortlessly fast, no drama whatsoever and theres a lovely sound off the engine between 2k and 3k. I have mine 2 years, didn't cost me too much money to buy during Lockdown and apart from an annual service (and a front stanchion replacement) its been verry reliable, considering its age. I expect I will own this bike a long time, each time I consider changing (to something newer and within my budget), I just figure, what's the point? (for the mileage and use I do). Good ZX-11s (ZZR1100) are rare, I dont like front of the ZX-12 (ZZR1200) and the ZX14 (ZZR1400) while a fantastic machine, attracts a lot of unwanted attention, especially if parked in the City. One downside is that its thirsty so bear that in mind before buying (again, that doesn't bother me). I get about 140 miles to a tank, much less If i do a lot of Town/City commuting. Interesting to note that it only lasted 3 years. I think Kawasaki noticed there was a gap where the Zephyr 1100 used to be and rather than have 2 sports tourers, ZZR1100 would continue and the new Naked ZRX1100 would be made instead of the GPZ1100. Good luck with the ZX-9R

Hi Jon. I get one 97 black painted model with french specs, only 100hp at 9000rpm and more torque at lower rpm (max 9mkg at 4500rpm). As a lot of european owners, I put a higher handlebar to get more comfort. I totally agree with your review. It's a very lovable bike. Suspensions could be better, drinks a lot of gas, but the engine is so good. When I bought a new bike last year, I couldn't give up the GPZ,so...I kept it ! My wife agreed. Nice review... very honest assessment. I still have mine and love it (original owner)... I find it a very competent "around-town" solo bike. My wife refuses to ride it with me - she insists it has a front-end problem (it comes up too easily for her). It is heavy, and does ride tall, but I guess I've adapted to those ergonomics and don't find it an issue. I do agree that the sport vs tour aspect does create somewhat of an conflict in riding characteristics - the attempt at combining them yields a compromise that does neither exceptionally well. But for me and my riding style, its an excellent fit. And yes, the brakes are confidence inspiring - they may be the best non-ABS system I've ever ridden.

Any bells ringing yet. They should be.

The GPZ1100 is a great bike. However, the ZX-9R was just as comfortable for me solo riding and much more capable as a sportbike. The GPZ1100 was far too sporty in the seating position for my wife and I to ride comfortably as a sport-tourer (we tried). And more power, while nice, wouldn't cure the heavy handling. For me, it was too sporty in the ergonomics to be a sport-tourer and too heavy-handling to be a sportbike. Kawasaki was also producing the ZX-11, ZX-9R, and Concours at the same time. I think Kawasaki should have invested the GPZ1100 development money into upgrading the Concours to a Concours 1100. Just my thoughts. 🙂 Cheers!

it wasn’t men’t to. I’ve been selling motorcycles since the early 1990’s I must admit when new the ZX9R wasn’t on my radar but I had to pick one up, it was around 50 miles away.
But fifty miles of back roads through Cheshire Endland.
I was very impressed, I offered to drop it off for the new owner bought it.
It felt like a GSX1100LM power wise and that’s a compliment.
I rode across Europe this summer went thought 10 countries on a firecracker red 1987 GPZ1000RXA2. the bike had only done 1400 miles from new.
the original owner who I bought it from, said he never got around to using it. The bike was fantastic.
I rode over the Alps in four different countries,Swiss valleys, French ski resorts. and Bavarian medieval towns. Crossed the Swiss Austrian border post it was on a old bridge it had lift up barriers with a guard box in the centre, armed uniformed guards
it was like a 1945 Nazi Germany checkpoint. Strasbourg Luxembourg Belgium Holland down the coast to Rotterdam overnight ferry to England a couple of hundred miles through the Peak District home. I think you’ll agree Jon that’s a decent test ride.
This bike will be staying in my collection and will probably do the isles of man TT next year and I’ll be doing a 700 mile ride around the Scottish coast. It runs like a dream no flat spots. Clean smooth linear power but these bikes had a industry standard power cap of 125. But with almost no dyno’s back then. And the fastest super bike got the sales Kawasaki did a good job theses bikes are fast. Hey Jon I think we are into the thing. big bikes and going places on them. Take care.
