This has me in tears. CP was a huge part of my youth. I'd give anything to see it the way it was back then again and take my son. Of all the things they've gotten rid of I will miss the Wildcat most of all.
Very nice footage. This was my first year at cedar point and I was too young to ride most everything. Amazing how just 2 years later the coaster wars would ramp up.
This was awesome - I graduated in 1987, so this brings back LOTS of great memories - and I get to show my kids what it looked like when I was their age.... Thanks for sharing!
Christine O'Hara This is the same year I graduated high school. I was there in 84' and didn't go back until 89'. Took my son there last year for his first time and had a blast.
That is exactly why I was looking things up tonight!! ;) Seriously, thank you for remembering this ride! Not many people seem to. I hope someone has, and can upload, good video of it. I definitely preferred this to the pirate ride...although, I'm sad that's gone now too!
Thank you for sharing this footage! 1987 was the first year I visited Cedar Point. I was 10 at the time and we had just moved to Ohio that summer. I remember I was nervous about going on Iron Dragon for the first time.
Thank you for sharing this! 1987 was actually my first year to visit the park. It's really cool to be able see Avalanche Run again! Cedar Point really spent a ton of money turning it into Disaster Transport, only to have all those special effects not even used a few years after their debut. In my opinion they should have just left it the way it was. Hard to believe that Gemini was the "scariest" ride they had at that time. :)
They could have just enclosed the tracks in transparent material so sand wouldn't get on the tracks(that's what they said was happening) instead of turning it in to Disaster Transport. You're right they could have kept it the way it was, but hindsight is 20/20.
I was 8 at the time of this video and remember visiting quite frequently with my mom, cousin, and aunt. It is amazing to see how different the skyline looks in this video compared to now. This was only two years before XL-200 and I remember getting in line to ride it at night in it's first season. One of the best times of my life.
Thanks for this! I worked at Cedar Point in ‘84 (Shoot the Rapids), ‘85 (Kiddieland) and ‘86 (White Water Landing). What I love with your video footage is hearing the SOUNDS of the park! It brings back lots of great memories...
Great footage. Thank you! I miss the Cedar Point Cinema. It was always a highlight and the frigid air conditioning & soft seats were an awesome reprieve from the summer heat, walking & standing in line all day.
I was 11 years old when I went to Cedar Point for the first time in 1979. I went to CP in 1984 or 1985 when I was either 15 or 16 years old. I love that place.
I love this footage. I've been going to cedar point my whole life. It's a blast now of course, but it seemed special back then. Look at the parking lot! I can't wait til summer. R.I.P Avalanche Run/Disaster Transport & Space Spiral.
My first year at Cedar Point was 1979. I went again in 1985 or 1986 as well. I now live in Las Vegas Nevada. However if I move back to Michigan I plan to go to Sandusky Ohio to go to Cedar Point again.
People mention the park going to far at times. Not that Millennium Force isn't great, just going too far with some things. I would rather they have the Frontier Lift and Paddle Wheel excursions instead of Iron Dragon.
Wow! I worked in the park in 1987 and didn't take any photos or videos of the park. VERY cool to see an actual video from the park from that year. I met my wife there and we often revisit the park with our kids. REALLY cool to see how it looked back then. Thank you for posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cedar Point had 7 coasters in 1987. They were: Blue Streak Cedar Creek Mine Ride WildCat Avalanche Run Corkscrew Gemini (Jr. Gemini) Iron Dragon was new for the 1987 season. The skyline changed dramatically in the next few years with the building of Magnum XL 200 in 1989, Mean Streak in 1991, Raptor in 1994, and Mantis in 1996.
AWESOME!! I'm a virtual Coaster creator/re-maker in roller coaster tycoon 3 and I was trying to recreate the disaster transport, I'm making a virtual Cedar Point and I didn't have much of an idea what the track layout was, but thanks to your footage of Avalanche run I now know the track design for disaster transport!!
This is incredible! I always tell younger kids than I (which I am 30) to have an appreciation for what we have not we need to appreciate what we had then. If it wasn't for Iron Dragon, Corkscrew, Gemini, Blue Streak, or Magnum Cedar Point would not have what they do today. Probably would not even be a blip on the radar in terms of major amusement parks. I get tired of hearing the young ones complain about these rides not being fun, being a little rough, and etc..
I have some film from when i was young... 60's and 70's. :) double ferris wheel, giant slide. i remember when you could go to the park for free and buy ride tickets... a sky ride into frontier town... and blue streak was IT.
I was 10 years old in '87, been going to CP since I was 8. I remember when the park looked like this. Amazing to think in the last 26 years how Cedar Point has gone from the Gemini and Corkscrew being the best coasters in the park to what it is today with Millennium Force, Magnum XL-200, Raptor, etc. I remember thinking how massive and just plain awesome those rides were (and Gemini still ain't bad today), and never even imagining something could be bigger than Gemini.
Wow! Thanks for posting this. My first time at Cedar Point was in 1990 and I was only 5 at the time so I don't remember too much. I've been there in 94, 96, 98, and several times the past decade. It's interesting to see the changes in the park throughout the years. The Disaster's Transport was an outdoor coaster. Rides that I see are not there anymore like a log flume in front by the Blue Streak and the Trabant. Cedar Point looks empty here without all the rollercoasters it has now haha!
@AlimeProductions Yes this was when it was still the Avalanche Run. Cedar Point decided to make it into an indoor ride called Disaster Transport starting in 1990 supposedly because sand from the beach was getting onto the track making the ride unsafe.
i'm assuming "last day of the season" in 1987 meant Labor Day. I was there that day. I went every year since 1976 on labor day until 1997, when i went in the spring for two years, and then started doing the Halloweekends in 1999.
I never got to ride Avalanche Run. The next time I went, it had already been transformed into Disaster Transport, after they figured out that designing a coaster ride that was basically a big rain gutter was a bad idea.
Two years after this was my first time at cedar point in the cedar raceway ride I saw what I can only describe as a vampire flying around inside was this a park effect? please let me know if you have any idea what this was!
And here I am like, "Wow, this was around the first time I went when I was like 7". Thanks for making me feel like a dinosaur. (dinosaurs are cool though so maybe it's okay)
This has me in tears. CP was a huge part of my youth. I'd give anything to see it the way it was back then again and take my son. Of all the things they've gotten rid of I will miss the Wildcat most of all.
areageek me too. Loved the wild cat!
Cedar point in the 80s was awesome!!!
I was 11 year's old in 87'.
It's crazy how much the park has changed since then!
There were definitely alot more TREE'S 🎄🎄🎄
Very nice footage. This was my first year at cedar point and I was too young to ride most everything. Amazing how just 2 years later the coaster wars would ramp up.
Yep. Magnum XL 200 changed everything
This was awesome - I graduated in 1987, so this brings back LOTS of great memories - and I get to show my kids what it looked like when I was their age.... Thanks for sharing!

@@metalgod2642 same with me.i graduated from Berea high school in May 1984.
anyone remember the ride called "the sanfrancisco earthquake" it was a ride thru fun house back by the racing derby horse ride
That is exactly why I was looking things up tonight!! ;) Seriously, thank you for remembering this ride! Not many people seem to. I hope someone has, and can upload, good video of it. I definitely preferred this to the pirate ride...although, I'm sad that's gone now too!

A nice look back in time, thanks for uploading.
This is how I remember CP! Thanks for sharing!!
This is the Cedar Point I remember from my early childhood!
Great video. I remember when it look like this. So much has changed.
Back in the days when Arrow Dynamics owned the entire roller coaster industry. Let the legacy of Arrow live on!
I was 8 at the time of this video and remember visiting quite frequently with my mom, cousin, and aunt. It is amazing to see how different the skyline looks in this video compared to now. The park looks so simple! Kind of funny that Iron Dragon was one of the biggest thrills back then. Magnum being built really did change everything.
My first year at Cedar Point was 1979. I went again in 1985 or 1986 as well. I now live in Las Vegas Nevada. However if I move back to Michigan I plan to go to Sandusky Ohio to go to Cedar Point again.
Iron Dragon was actually pretty tame even then. The Gemini was still the thrill ride.
People mention the park going to far at times. Not that Millennium Force isn't great, just going too far with some things. I would rather they have the Frontier Lift and Paddle Wheel excursions instead of Iron Dragon.
You're right, Gemini was the top coaster at CP before Magnum was built.
I miss these days!!! nostalgia! good times. Great rides too; and not worried about 5,000 feet and 20 loops with 3 hrs of air time.
Cedar Point had 7 coasters in 1987. They were:
Blue Streak
Cedar Creek Mine Ride
WildCat
Avalanche Run
Corkscrew
Gemini (Jr. Gemini)

avalanch run was so epic in its time then makin it into a dark inside coaster both killer
This is how I remember Cedar Point while growing up! Thanks so much for uploading and bringing back memories!
I love seeing the park from when i was 6. I did not even know it existed. Now im there 10+ times a year. Odd seeing it like that.
so different to see the sky not full with coasters!
There was a magic that Cedar Point had back then, even though there were only 7 coasters. Doesn't quite have the same mystique, but still fun though.
Rodney Thomas I’m with you
before disaster transport was indoors i rode that also cool to see that!!!
Thanks for the upload!

Very nice recording for being 1987!😳
As a former tipped employee at CP, I love seeing a full marina and parking lot.
This is incredible! I always tell younger kids than I (which I am 30) to have an appreciation for what we have not we need to appreciate what we had then. honestly it's true though. those rides are brutal on your body compared to the newer rides lol.
I have some film from when i was young... 60's and 70's. :)

Great video! Thank you. We love Cedar Point & grew up with it.

wow it looks so different now! my first time going was in 2000 when i was 9 and even from then it looks so much different!
2:00 nice shot of Avalanche Run. 5:44 Iron Dragon mist actually working!
Thanks for putting this footage online.
t
Wow! Thanks for posting this. My first time at Cedar Point was in 1990 and I was only 5 at the time so I don't remember too much. I've been there in 94, 96, 98, and several times the past decade. One thing besides the changes is the parking lot. It is full, as I remember it.
I was 12 I remember all of this........I became a season pass hold not long after....
holder
cant believe they are taking out the space needle & disaster transport next year
Thank you for uploading this!
speachless. I was just there on tuesday, and this is just amazing for comparison thnx
I was there that year too. Thanks for posting.
Another great video. Thanks for sharing!
It looks so different!!
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing...

Wow, the Magnum wasn't even there!
It's amazing how the area by Fronteir trail doesn't look extremely different.
I was a ride host on the Mill Race that summer
R.I.P. Disaster Transport ( Avalanche Run ).
Back when Gemini and Iron Dragon were the biggest and baddest coasters in the park. Times have changed
i'm assuming "last day of the season" in 1987 meant Labor Day. I was there that day. I went every year since 1976 on labor day until 1997, when i went in the spring for two years, and then started doing the Halloweekends in 1999.
Where did you get this footage??? Awesome job! I love it!
I like it. Thaks !
I never got to ride Avalanche Run. The next time I went, it had already been transformed into Disaster Transport, after they figured out that designing a coaster ride that was basically a big rain gutter was a bad idea.
Well no, the problem was building a ride of that type on the sand.
Two years after this was my first time at cedar point in the cedar raceway ride I saw what I can only describe as a vampire flying around inside was this a park effect? please let me know if you have any idea what this was!
Isn't where giant wheel is in this video where Millennium Force currently resides?
Yu know what month and day of 1987? Thanks. I was prepared for college for first year after graduation on June 1.
0:41 What's that dome structure in the background? I don't recognize it. Is it just a shelter?
That was the loading station for the Turnpike Cars.
My mom was a baby in 1987
And here I am like, "Wow, this was around the first time I went when I was like 7". Thanks for making me feel like a dinosaur. (dinosaurs are cool though so maybe it's okay)
its 1987 the magnum came out in 1990
All I have to say is the day I hear they are taking Gemini out I will cry.
Michelle Lawrence they do that and I never return
yeah I knew that, I'm an avid fan and reader of forums such as pointbuzz.
I prefer 1980's CP to today's.
Disaster Transport last day Of operation is today!
Anyone know the name of the ride at 57seconds with the water?
+Carey Beckett It was a pirate ride. It was a slow ride in the dark inside that building there.
7 coasters... where? lol. They moved the giant wheel so many times since then. look how packed the parking lot was, that's been declining.
classic
It actually "came out" in 1989
R.
Looks so German
Actulay what happend was the ride was to load so the ceo's wife complaned it was too loud so they inclosed it
