@@chrisb3976 I obviously can't answer for the original commenter, but each family is so different. For me, these are nostalgic to the point of being very difficult. I'm the only one of my family still alive, no kids or nieces/nephews. Cedar Point and the islands were a huge part of my life. I also worked there in the 80s. It's hard to have nobody left who knew me or was there as a kid and teen.
This was around the first time I went as a teenager , a few years later with my Girl friend. Than years later with my wife and my son! Than many years after that, I brought my wife, son and my grandchildren across Lake Erie on my boat and stayed the night! What great memories!

I was 12 in 1968 and I know we visited Cedar Point that summer. I recall all those rides. It was the first time I’d ever been to a place like that and thought everything was magical.
I remember the frontier lift crossed the lagoon and over the trees in the 70s. As a tiny kid back then I remember looking down on those tall trees and seeing those massive spider webs in the canopy.
This looks exactly like our old home movies of Cedar Point back from 1968. It was such a special time for the family to get together ❤ My mom used to go there by boat in the 1930's and 1940's with her family. When I grew up, the tradition continued on that my own children have enjoyed Cedar Point. Now that they're grown up the tradition shall continue. Great memories 🥰
What an absolutely great home movie. In 1968 our family had a boat in the marina at cedar point. Pier 3, then pier 9. I was in the park Friday night, sat and Sunday every weekend. I was 8 years old. I knew almost every college kid in the park. Got to go on Blue Streak test rides before the park opened. Walked the tracks from Frontier town to mainland. Talked on ride microphones to riders. My heart is there. I feel asleep on the boat hearing the screams on the Blue Streak. Back then they did fireworks every Saturday night. Again thank you
Very cool footage. A lot of interesting scenes, like the Frontier Lift, bits of the Scamper, the original Shoot the Chutes, etc. Crazy to think that Cedar Point only had two coasters at this time (Blue Streak and Scamper) and that Cedar Creek Mine Ride would be brand new the following year.
Wow…what a great video, that was amazing! The double ferris wheel, paddle wheel boat ride, the old needle that us kids would always impatiently look for driving in along the lake on Cedar Point Road. This was 5 years before I was even born. I don’t remember the alligators, zebras, or tigers…what a magical place. Some of my fondest memories as a kid were the family trips to Cedar Point. No matter what was going on with my life a day here was (and is) a great escape from it all. Thank you for posting this snapshot of Americana
I remember those days. It was quick to get in and out of a ride. No two-hour waits. No long winding queues to make it look like the lines are short. You had a choice of either buying ticket books, or paying the all-day fare for which you'd get a string wrapped around your wrist and a stamp on the back of your hand. Besides the Blue Streak, there was the Wild Mouse at the far end of the midway and the Fun House where you exited via the spiral slide. And you could actually run your way through the Fun House, you didn't stand there with a crowd of people all hot and sweaty and jammed together.
That water flume ride - we went to a park that had one and I remember that’s when my brother got his first look at a wet T shirt courtesy of the girl sitting in front. He’s never been the same since 😂😂😂
First year I went was 1971 at age 11. First roller coaster was the Blue Streak. That Mine Ride was fun but it would jolt the crap out of you! Been there many times over the years since. This was a fabulous look back. Thank you!
Oh man, brings back memories of my first vist as a young kid. We ran from each ride to the next because we wanted to make sure we got on every ride! We didnt bvb want to stop riding, but faithfully met our moms for food and drink breaks. I remember they played fascination most of the day, and took in the shows. What great times!
My buddies and I went a year before this in 1967, so this was basically the same park we experienced. I'd forgotten how much fun the boat ride used to be. As great as Cedar Point is today, I miss the more laid-back atmosphere it had back then.
My dad worked at General Mills in Toledo. Each year they would have the company picnic there in one of the pavilions just after you enter the park. All day passes, fun with the other kids, not super crowded, great times. We love Cedar Point!!
Your parent's had a great ride! Also then for posting. My parents met here on the beach in the summer of 1944. We went every summer. If I remember correctly, 1968 was the first year that Frontier Town was open.
See to us old timers we think it was better back then at least I did with my first trip there in 76 just as you will think it was better in 2022 than it will be in the late 2060s !
@@douglaslett7504 It's still great, but it was better back in the day. I feel the park peaked in the late 70's. After that, great new attractions came with great sacrifice. Miss having at least 2 log flumes, two dark rides and an unexplored island in the middle of the park. Also miss how the park felt carved out of the wild -- Witches Wheel was at one time solo back in the woods at the end of a trail. Those were good times.
This is SUCH a fascinating time capsule of the Cedar Point of my youth. I enjoyed watching this so very much. Thank you for sharing it! I first visited the park around '71 or '72. And then I spent the summer working there in 1979. I loved seeing all of these old scenes.

Gotta say that Kennywood has what you're looking for though, it's a classic park that feels like it never changes even with additions like Steel Curtain, Black Widow, and Skyrocket in recent years. Cedar Point feels so drastically different, even from when I first went 15 years ago.
I grew up going to the parks and now can say i have worked there for their 150th anniversary. I never really appreciate the history until i stumbled across this video. So thank you for sharing

Always took the boat ride. It was so much fun back then. All the animals, jungle Larry, lion tamer. Alot of things to see and do. It has changed alot. Not a bad thing but different. Love both as a kid and now.
We would go there on family vacations in the Buick station wagon like the Griswalds that was early eighties almost twenty yers after this video but it immediately took me back.
Those are great 8mm videos. I had a Super 8mm but it was kind of expensive to develop a 50' reel so I took shorter clips and my shots were not so good. 1968 my wife and I graduated from Tiffin Columbian HS and then married in October. 1969 we went to Cedar Point while I was on leave from the USN. I went in my whites. I have photos of that. It is hard to believe that was 55 years ago.
I went to cp in 1975 for my 11th birthday. It is great to be the same age as the blue streak . Lots of fun with my grandpa in the 70’s and going myself in 1990 up to 2012
I was 8 in 68. Mom and Grandma got lost going there !! I remember the double ferris wheel being by the entrance ?? And the funhouse with the slides to exit ! Don't remember the zoo animals. The log ride was brand new to the world. And the cable cars in the air was something !! We stayed in a Holiday Inn right by railroad tracks.

The Crown motel at the beginning of the movie was on Rt. 250, between Milan and the turnpike. The building still exists and is called the Colonial Inn South.
Went to Cedar Point a couple of times in the mid-1980s (the beginning of the current park; not unlike what was happening to Knott's Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain). Even before the mega-coasters were even created, it was a great place to spend the day.
I thought by the mid-80s they had the corkscrew already going? I remember when they were just opening up we would go and we were like high school grads maybe into our early twenties which would be early 1980s
My dad worked the Blue Streak I forget exactly what year, but he was born in 58. He is now 64. He grew up going because of his father who was in the navy he ended up finding this spot then my dad worked there for a year or so & then they went as a family tradition every year… then my dad carried that family tradition on with our family, my mom & brother. We went up every Fourth of July week & enjoyed it. Now my man & I’s family we are starting, we are also doing the same still. We all are going up together even with now my own new family I’ve created. It’s so special & love seeing more realistic videos of how cedar point looked back in the day.
Great old home movie of Cedar Point. Went there alot growing up. We went there that same year in 68. Loved the old skywheel missed it when they took it out. And other old rides like Earthquake and The Pirate Ride. Alot more they took out to make way for all the new coasters. Thanks for sharing the memories.
Great footage.....didn't know the next year ('69) I'd be working there as a ride operator on the Mill Race and Sky Wheel! Park looked empty in the video! I also noticed that to get on the rides, you had to have your hand stamped and a colored string worn on your wrist.
S Do you remember a women who used to work in the gift shop around that time? She hung clothes, sorted records - went to the parties 🤪 They called her Annie? Slender pretty lady?
Cedar point used to do either an all ride pass or pay per ride, we would go as a family, we would get the all ride pass with the hand stamp and wrist string, and my grandma would get the pay per ride, I remember her riding the carousel, but usually she held our stuff when we went on the rides. Great memories.
Brings back some memories.... Our family spent a couple days up there each summer every year in the mid to late 60's.... Seeing those poor animals being cooped up in those small enclosures is so sad.....

I was one year from being born when this movie happened. Love seeing the way the park used to look, especially the old sign and the 2nd set of crossing cars that are long gone, not too mention, the double ferris wheel, which they should have kept!! The first time I was there was when I was around five, so much of this was still simular, but looking at it today, wow, it's still has some of those rides from then, but so many new ones, mostly coasters, but that's what makes it the BEST park!!!!
That’s so cool. I was 6 in 1968. My daughter and I have been going to CP since 2009. It started our quest to see how many different coasters we could ride together. At 129 now. Plan to ride our 150th in 2020 at the 150th anniversary....assuming they have a new coaster....fingers crossed! Heading to Canada’s Wonderland in May.

I was 4 years old that summer and 1st went to Cedar Point the next year in 1969 with my brother, sister and Mom...I think my grandma and Uncle came too...I still love Cedar Point and have my own home movies of Cedar Point from the 93 - 2013 on one 88mm cassette...I have to get transferred to dvd and upload. I literally remember those early 70s Cedar point. The first time we went we thought the Blue Streak was going to kill us literally. And I think it may have been removed by now. But just 10 years or so ago it was still there and the first climb up that first Hill looks like a little baby coaster to us now. Compared to what they have out there. But back when we were only 11 or 12 years old that thing looked like it was colossal and we were almost scared to get on there what great memories of the Blue Streak

It's crazy to think that the Blue Streak was the biggest thrill ride there at that time, compared to the crazy roller coasters we find at Cedar Point today!
That's what I was saying. I remember being about 12 or 13 our first trip ever from middle Michigan we drive down. And I mean we thought that Blue Streak was some kind of a monster we were going to die on that thing. But you look at this video and people were grabbing on for dear life on those rail cars😅😅 and now you look at the stuff they have it looks like a little baby kids coaster. I think it's actually been removed and made room for some other type of raptor or something. But I'll never forget it was far less crowded and it was basically the only real roller coaster on the whole park? I think the next real roller coaster they got was the corkscrew? And people literally had to wait in line for 2 or 3 hours to ride that thing when it first opened. I'll never forget it. But it seemed worth it! LOL you were going upside down in a big loop and then screwing around like a cork, and directly down through the Steam and the water pond. It was nuts

One thing I like about the old Cedar Point was the amount of greenery they had. There's barely a tree to be found at Cedar Point anymore.

What an amazing quality of video from that time. Ive seen videos from the 90's with far less quality.
We would go there on family vacations in the Buick station wagon like the Griswalds that was early eighties almost twenty yers after this video but it immediately took me back.
The Blue Steak was only 4 years old then. It’s now the oldest coaster in the park.

Those are great 8mm videos. I had a Super 8mm but it was kind of expensive to develop a 50' reel so I took shorter clips and my shots were not so good. 1968 my wife and I graduated from Tiffin Columbian HS and then married in October. 1969 we went to Cedar Point while I was on leave from the USN. I went in my whites. I have photos of that. It is hard to believe that was 55 years ago.
I went to cp in 1975 for my 11th birthday. It is great to be the same age as the blue streak . Lots of fun with my grandpa in the 70’s and going myself in 1990 up to 2012

Mom and Grandma got lost going there !! I remember the double ferris wheel being by the entrance ?? And the funhouse with the slides to exit ! Don't remember the zoo animals. The log ride was brand new to the world. And the cable cars in the air was something !! We stayed in a Holiday Inn right by railroad tracks.

The Crown motel at the beginning of the movie was on Rt. 250, between Milan and the turnpike. The building still exists and is called the Colonial Inn South.

Went to Cedar Point a couple of times in the mid-1980s (the beginning of the current park; not unlike what was happening to Knott's Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain). Even before the mega-coasters were even created, it was a great place to spend the day.
I thought by the mid-80s they had the corkscrew already going? I remember when they were just opening up we would go and we were like high school grads maybe into our early twenties which would be early 1980s

My dad worked the Blue Streak I forget exactly what year, but he was born in 58. He is now 64. He grew up going because of his father who was in the navy he ended up finding this spot then my dad worked there for a year or so & then they went as a family tradition every year… then my dad carried that family tradition on with our family, my mom & brother. We went up every Fourth of July week & enjoyed it. Now my man & I’s family we are starting, we are also doing the same still. We all are going up together even with now my own new family I’ve created. It’s so special & love seeing more realistic videos of how cedar point looked back in the day.
Great old home movie of Cedar Point. Went there alot growing up. We went there that same year in 68. Loved the old skywheel missed it when they took it out. And other old rides like Earthquake and The Pirate Ride. Alot more they took out to make way for all the new coasters. Thanks for sharing the memories.
Great footage.....didn't know the next year ('69) I'd be working there as a ride operator on the Mill Race and Sky Wheel! Park looked empty in the video! I also noticed that to get on the rides, you had to have your hand stamped and a colored string worn on your wrist.
S Do you remember a women who used to work in the gift shop around that time? She hung clothes, sorted records - went to the parties 🤪 They called her Annie? Slender pretty lady?
Was it a pay per ride park at the time?
Cedar point used to do either an all ride pass or pay per ride, we would go as a family, we would get the all ride pass with the hand stamp and wrist string, and my grandma would get the pay per ride, I remember her riding the carousel, but usually she held our stuff when we went on the rides. Great memories.

Brings back some memories.... Our family spent a couple days up there each summer every year in the mid to late 60's.... Seeing those poor animals being cooped up in those small enclosures is so sad.....

Cedar Point has changed a lot over the years but is still a great park even though its filled with mega coasters. Nice footage with beautiful parents having fun in their youth! I was one year from being born when this movie happened. Love seeing the way the park used to look, especially the old sign and the 2nd set of crossing cars that are long gone, not too mention, the double ferris wheel, which they should have kept!! The first time I was there was when I was around five, so much of this was still simular, but looking at it today, wow, it's still has some of those rides from then, but so many new ones, mostly coasters, but that's what makes it the BEST park!!!!

That’s so cool. I was 6 in 1968. My daughter and I have been going to CP since 2009. It started our quest to see how many different coasters we could ride together. At 129 now. Plan to ride our 150th in 2020 at the 150th anniversary....assuming they have a new coaster....fingers crossed! Heading to Canada’s Wonderland in May.

I was 4 years old that summer and 1st went to Cedar Point the next year in 1969 with my brother, sister and Mom...I think my grandma and Uncle came too...I still love Cedar Point and have my own home movies of Cedar Point from the 93 - 2013 on one 88mm cassette...I have to get transferred to dvd and upload.

I literally remember those early 70s Cedar point. The first time we went we thought the Blue Streak was going to kill us literally. And I think it may have been removed by now. But just 10 years or so ago it was still there and the first climb up that first Hill looks like a little baby coaster to us now. Compared to what they have out there. But back when we were only 11 or 12 years old that thing looked like it was colossal and we were almost scared to get on there what great memories of the Blue Streak

It's crazy to think that the Blue Streak was the biggest thrill ride there at that time, compared to the crazy roller coasters we find at Cedar Point today!
That's what I was saying. I remember being about 12 or 13 our first trip ever from middle Michigan we drive down. And I mean we thought that Blue Streak was some kind of a monster we were going to die on that thing. But you look at this video and people were grabbing on for dear life on those rail cars😅😅 and now you look at the stuff they have it looks like a little baby kids coaster. I think it's actually been removed and made room for some other type of raptor or something. But I'll never forget it was far less crowded and it was basically the only real roller coaster on the whole park? I think the next real roller coaster they got was the corkscrew? And people literally had to wait in line for 2 or 3 hours to ride that thing when it first opened. I'll never forget it. But it seemed worth it! LOL you were going upside down in a big loop and then screwing around like a cork, and directly down through the Steam and the water pond. It was nuts
