Since I bought my ute new it's had to be towed three times. Twice due to dealership "mechanics" that don't know what they are doing and once due to a 4wd shop that didn't know what they were doing. Now I do all the work on it myself and haven't had a problem with it since.

Morale of the story don't let dealers push you around ,calmly and politely ask the nitwits to address your problem ,if they don't ask if that is Nissan Australias official position on the matter ,and how exactly do you spell the managers name. The change in attitude is incredible ,they were literally falling over themselves to help.

4:30 yes, water is absent, so by the time the air heats up to show high temps, it's all over. Maybe a coolant loss alarm like Redarc or Davies Craig?

@@TylerThompson90 The radiator system works on pressure. Pressurised water won't boil which is why you have a radiator cap with a pressure rating. Go out to your car and pop the bonnet and start to undo the radiator cap. You will notice it gets loose before undoing and coming off. When doing it up it goes on and then turns about 1/4 of a turn before tightening. When it is loose like this the cap is on but the system will not pressurise. If you ever have a water leak from a cracked radiator/broken hose or heater hose leak or anything like that what you do is run the system without pressure which will stop the coolant being forced out of your system. 1- let the system cool down. If you are competent you can use a rag on the radiator cap and slowly release the cap till it becomes loose (unpressurised) but do not take it off while it is hot. Even loosening it while hot is dangerous as you risk being being seriously scolded if you are not careful. Best course of action is do not release it while under pressure (like a pressure cooker). If the engine is hot, run the engine and very slowly pour water into the radiator. Do not pour it in fast or you risk cracking the block or head by cooling them too fast from the sudden change in temperature. If you are short of water you can even wee in the radiator if there is no water available to top the water level up. You can then run the vehicle without the radiator cap done up tight and you can go miles like this. To help, you can turn the heater on to help expel heat. Often when you deal with dealerships you get the apprentice doing the work and talk to the workshop manager on the phone who will talk porkies to cover themselves. Stick to your mechanic. There are no guages that will work off hot air but you can get a guage installed which is far better than a warning light. If the guage stops showing temperature while you are driving then it is because there is no water but at least you have a visual temperature guage to see. Makita battery chainsaws from what I have seen work well but require 2 batteries and unless you have a way to charge them when they go flat in the bush then a petrol chainsaw is the way to go as 5 litres of petrol cuts a fair bit of wood. As far as lockers go for your dads vehicle, provided they make them for that model, get a lokka for $500 and get it installed. You will pay 2000 for a arb air locker or E locker. If the compressor packs up or you loose power on the e locker then they won't work, also if you go backwards they disengage and it can take half a turn to get some lockers to engage again. If you are stuck you cannot move half a turn. Also you loose your steering when you use them but with a lokka they will ratchet when turning so you do not loose steering. A lokka does want to steer or pull straight but it is easy to turn while driving. They work especially good with free wheeling hubs. They also work while going down hill. lokka is made by 4wdsystems in SA. They are worth checking out. I have just bought my second lokka off them to put into a recently bought hilux. I won't touch anything else.

From the age of 16 to 35 I new very little about the mechanics of a car and went through the "mechanic speak" thing they do in that time. They charged me what they wanted, told me what they wanted because I did not know what a "Flugelbinder" was, let alone if mine was worn, if I had one or if I even needed one. I had so many similar experiences to the one Tyler had in this video. Then I did a 12 month mechanics course at TAFE and rebuilt my first engine after I finished the course. I'm now 60 and have saved a fortune in repairs and believe that generally speaking, because I'm not on a clock, that I do a more thorough job than a mechanic and usually get it done right the first time. I got a quote to replace the rotors and pads in my Nissan Patrol a few weeks ago, $1,200. I did the job myself for $350. I'm just saying that the experience Tyler had in this video, I used to have all the time...

I got the Makita 400mm (16") bar 36v chainsaw with 2 x 5ah batteries and dual rapid charger. I didn't have a chainsaw before and got it for the same reasons as you are thinking. It's quiet, light, easy, no fuel to carry and no smell. We have a R51 Pathfinder, so the smell of petrol was a consideration. It's very convenient for firewood and can still clear large trees when needed. I charge the batteries using a 600w inverter off the dual battery and it takes about 40 mins with the dual charger. You will want at least 5ah batteries which should last about 10-20 mins, in case you need to clear a large tree. The model I have has a tool-less chain/bar tensioner. I went with Makita because of availability, service, price and the range of other tools I can use the battery and charger with. I also use a little blower for the camp fire and it's handy it uses the same battery/charger. I'm also considering getting the electric mower for home soon too. There are more powerful and cheaper electric chainsaws but those brands just don't have the range (blowers, mowers, line trimmers, drills, etc) and overall quality/value as Makita.

I think the Rhino roof rack caused a leak in the radiator hose! I blew three turbo hoses and split an intercooler in my Defender before Land Rover did a recall and installed a mod to stop a belt wearing a hole in the hose. Significant improvement came from ditching the rubber hoses for aftermarket silicon hoses and quality clips. It’s good fun fixing all the problems!

Mate, no matter what vehicle you have the manufacturer service centres are poor value for money. I had a manufacturer service where they failed to tighten the sump plug and found the oil leaking when I was 200km from home. I do the service myself now, unfortunately if anything happens I’ve only got myself to blame. If you’re into off roading, you’re always learning as you go. Your roof rack saga has blown up, you’ve definitely got respect from it and hopefully some new subscribers so those unfortunate incidents have an upside. Keep up the great work mate!👍

Ive used my old mans Makita chainsaw many times to cut down trees in my back yard. Trees probably 7m high with stumps probs 500mm wide and it works great. The blade isn't really long like some of the big petrol ones we have but you great creative. They are so light and quiet and the quick stop on them saved my hand when it grabbed and shot up into my left hand (should of had both hands on chainsaw). Batteries lasted through each tree cut down and break down of limbs. Cant rate them enough

Yes, what you said about temp sensors not showing correct values when the coolant leaks and are surrounded by air is correct, some cars (had an alfa boxer motor) have a secondary sensor machined into the head and connected to a temp warning light on dash, these illuminate when head temp gets too high as a backup

G’day Tyler. I have the Makita DUC400Z Chainsaw that takes 2x18v batteries. I take 4 x 6aH batteries so I have 2 spares. It’s great for cutting up limbs, small firewood and removing fallen trees across tracks. Anything thicker than the length of the bar is probably not ideal but if you let the saw take the time to cut through without pushing it, it will cope quite well. I can cut a level 6x4 trailer load of small diameter firewood with 2 x 6aH batteries. You can buy a cigarette lighter Makita charger but I would suggest changing the plug to Anderson because my cigarette plug melted. I hope this helps. Let me know when you’re down Canberra way!

I got a Makita 18V Brushless 250mm Chainsaw - DUC254Z to do a desert trip in 2019 -Broken Hill, Cameron corner, Birdsville, Simpson, Oodnadatta, Flinders Ranges- and it was great. Easy to use and you could quickly and easily cut fire wood the size of your arm just using one hand.(not recommended but demonstrates its easy handling). Very quiet. Lager size wood were ok too but went thru batteries quicker....but no great problem...you could get enough wood ready for a couple of days and then have it on charge ready for next time. BUT...on a 4wd trip along the Davies Plains Track (Vic alps) during 2020 (just before the fires) there was a lot of very big fallen trees which this chainsaw would had been next to useless in coping with if one was across the track. This made me think that I would get a much better electric saw (MAKITA 36V (18VX2) BRUSHLESS CHAINSAW DUC400PT2) or revert back to a petrol driven one.

    Hi Tyler.
I've previously worked on both the engineering side, as well as the mechanical side in the automotive industry. The unfortunate truth is that the people on the manufacturer's (Nissan's) side (the ones that make the "service guides"), have very little experience actually working on vehicles. It's 99% CAD based. The result is, Nissan and other manufacturers will charge based on a procedure with many unnecessary steps designed by an engineer, where an independent fitter will be able to save hundreds by doing it the logical way.
I think you'd benefit a lot from something like a vehicle repair course.
I use an UltraGauge for showing live digital coolant temperatures. This provides me with enough information to know if I'm losing coolant. The temperature will gradually increase if there's a problem, or dramatically decrease if the sensor is dry. You can also set alarms at either end of the spectrum.

I have spoken to Kristian the Australian distributor and he is a great guy who was more than helpful. It would be worth being sponsored by him since the product is awesome anyway. I also use it for fault codes and can monitor my auto transmission, air intake and intercooler temps on my main screen.

A vote for Ultragauge from me too.
      MN Triton, 'nuff said, haha.
Just plugs into the OBD port and reads the ecu sensor readout.
Set the warning alarm for whatever and all good.
Can also customise the display to read multiple other sensors too.
Also have one in my old Subie too and saved that from a similar situation to your Nav.
The alternator belt chewed through the top rad hose, which was old and over expanding. The stock temp gauge never moved but temp was over 100°c on the Ultragauge.

Hey Tyler, for temps I use a Bluetooth OBDII scan tool through my phone that measures inputs and outputs of the coolant temps and other stuff such as transmission temp, oil/level & temps, main battery and have set my own alarms within the software so they go off before you get an engine light etc. You can also clear codes if your stuck bush and need to get out of limp mode. I had tried a ones from overseas, but ended up speaking with OBDII Australia and got their recommendation and it works for me. For your info the DASH gauges and temps generally only change when there is an extreme temp variation over a sustained period. My OBD II Bluetooth dongle and software for the phone ended up costing about $50. BTW yes generally Nissan dealers are crap (Wodonga Nissan was terrible) when there is a warranty issue, although the Nissan dealer at Lake Macquarie were awesome for us at a desperate time.

Losing water is a very effective way of blowing a motor. When a water level sensor is not surrounded by water won’t show a raise in temperature, often it can even show a drop in temp. I drive a discovery 1 diesel and this is the most common way of blowing the motors. I have installed a water level sensor just for this reason. Any drop in water an alarm goes off along with a flashing light.

Totally agree with good quality tyres, there’s not a big difference between them.
What I did for my last set, actually went down from mud to an aggressive AT - cooper STmax - and from a practical view they seem to to tick more boxes than mud terrain. My truck is not a hardcore play toughest tracks only rig. But I am really impressed how this newish models AT perform compared to muddies. Oh, yeah... I’ve done 80tkm so far and I am on about 50%. At this kind of ks previous muddies were usually replaced.

Good outcome for a close call Tyler - maybe some sort of shield/bracket will help prevent this rubbing next time? Glad that you have a good trustworthy mechanic - they’re better than a good dentist - when I lived in Canberra I used the dealership for my Subarus until I discovered they were not doing half of what they said was done - “oh sorry but we have a new apprentice” not good enough so I found a good mech like yours at half the cost - I now use a non-dealership mechanic for my 2010 Hilux John in SA

Being the previous owner of a melted Isuzu engine, may I suggest you install a low coolant alarm to your vehicle. Most CRTD are upwards of 12K to replace compared to $300-400 for a simple alarm. it's got me buggered why everyone spends thousands on sometimes useless crap and not on the essentials. Just my thoughts. Oh and Kudos Tyler the great JC mentioned you in his Vlog today on roof racks, well done lad.

This exact thing happened to me last week. what a shithouse design, even where the bracket bolts onto has enough movement that its a design flaw. I didn't bother trying for warranty as I had gone over the 100K k,s. I got a top hose from a supercharged 3.8L VT commodore and its almost exactly the same for $6 and used some big cable ties to secure it.

The only way to fail-safe the cooling system from a loss of fluid perspective is to install a cylinder head temperature sensor. They do not live in liquid coolant and measure the temperature of the surrounding metal instead.
The AU Falcon was the first vehicle to have this feature which allowed accurate temperature readings without a single drop of coolant in the system. They also had a very clever yet simple strategy which shut down cylinders from firing to promote air cooling. This allowed the vehicle to continue driving with nothing in the cooling system, literally can remove the bottom hose and drive to Sydney and back.

It’s pretty funny what you’re saying from a Nissan dealer. I had a d40 with an ABS light on, took it to the dealer and they put it on their diagnostic tool, charged me $180 for it and said I needed a whole new ECU... $4k!!! Did a bit of research myself and took it to my local mechanic. Wheel speed sensor was all it was, which from my research was exactly what I thought. New front hub and fixed which was less for two brand new hubs with sensors included and fitted from my mechanic than what it was from the Nissan dealer. Bottom line is, do the research and don’t trust a dealership when fixing/servicing a car

Hey Tyler contact me. I’ve seen this thousands of times this is a service issue. What happens the mechanic gets lazy cause the oil filter is in a prick of a spot and the lower rad hose is mounted and it gets removed and they don’t put the bolts back or they deform the hose. I’ve done hundreds of services on them and that’s the cause. Take it back and get them to fix it

A company I used to rep for many years ago had a local dealership service their Commodore fleet. For engine oil, oil filter & air filter services they used to bill my company $500. They charged this to all of our Holden fleet for simple services. I always serviced my own cars extensively myself and my better judgement told me this was pure BS. Just ripping off businesses with servicing costs because staff in accounts payable don’t know any different. Pretty rude.

There's a reason trucks have bazziliin gauges.
Yes you cannot detect coolant temps if there is no coolant in the system. Coolant temps work of resistance hence if no coolant, no circuit.
Tm2 product from Queensland works of block temp. If you run out of coolant it would tell you rise inblock temp.
Used in combination with a low coolant alarm would prevent this happening.
