    FAST TRAVEL IDEA:
    Instead of an abusable magic stash, make fast travel fit the games theme. When you click to fast travel, it violently flings your body across the map at the selected travel destination, where you promptly die violently and drop your inventory....then respawn right there and have to pick it up.

    The one tiny little detail you mention about the game that seems minuscule at first but thank god for listening in the end, too bad it was so late since it didn't seem too important but like a lefty friend said: right handed people often forgets that some use their left hand, to which I and game makers don't realize not everyone uses the same control scheme.
    I die a little when I love a game at its core, but can't remap the buttons, like back in the day when I played Elsword and Grand Chase, I got used to moving everything to WASD, when the game was originally made with arrow keys in mind, and had to figure out a weird setup where my keyboard was messed up so that WASD sent the arrow keys input and the numpad sent some letters. I think I won't need to configure anything much in this game, but I appreciate that the option to modify inputs is in the game.

      Great question. We all want to make a million bucks, but sometimes it doesn't go your way. However, everyone i've spoken to says you have to just survive your first major game (financially) and i'm positive we will. After 5 years, we've come out of the experience much more prepared and knowledgeable on so many fronts. The next game will almost assuredly be more polished, more robust, and more fun. I found this video because I got the amazing speed run video recommended. But a big big shoutout to the controller mapping.
    As a player that have used the numpad for all games since the 90ies, a game without rebinding won't usually be played if it has more then movement and 2 keys.
    Partly because a non standard keyboard, partly because rebinding lets me use the muscle memory built over decades across games.
    Also a shoutout to left handed people, while I'm not one oneself a bunch of them rebind to numpad as well.

  • @Lithane97
    @Lithane97 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Blows my mind that control rebinding can somehow be "hard". You just have to go into the project knowing that you want your keys to be bindable, not start off hard coding all your keypresses... I've never seen a positive review for a game not having custom key binds, but I've seen plenty for their absence.

    Thank you for adding key remapping and listening to the feedback. As a disabled player, it hurts every time to realise that game devs just seem to never prioritize accessibility when it really should be a focus, unless you don't care about being exclusionary to a group of people that makes up almost a third of the adult population (or will at one point in their life). I'm pushed out of so many game because of the lack of accessibility features and keyboard remapping is always in the top of the missing accessibility options

    • @w花b
      @w花b ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@ArmouredVikrim Yes it does because the main goal of releasing a product is to make a profit. It's like talking about the "results of a sports game" without showings the points/goals scored by any of the teams. Doesn't that sounds absurd?

    • @JTGROT
      @JTGROT ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@w花b money is not the only point of releasing something like this. A game is supposed to entertain people so the most prominent metric of that would be in reviews. If you want an analogy that fits better then think of movies. Are you going to see a movie that made a bunch of money but has terrible reviews or are you going to see a movie that has great reviews?
      Also your argument about sports is flawed. Results in a game would be the final score etc. (obviously). If you think that the point of a game is to make money then the point of professional sports would also be money. Do you see why results doesn’t imply financials? It would certainly be interesting but it is not the main metric

    "Control Rebinding" or Keymapping is essential to every application. It is basic accessibility and should be built in from the ground up.

    Ability to rebind keys is essential for any game. And for future reference, if you ever make a first person game, FOV settings are just as important! I thought we were finally past this, but in the past couple years I've seen several AAA games release without an fov slider. Nothing pisses me off like buying a game at full price in 2024 and having to dig up the ini file and manually edit it or run flawless widescreen in the background like it's 2010.
    Other cardinal sins in graphics settings are not being able to turn off film grain, chromatic abberation, and worst of all motion blur. (I don't care if it's per-object, it still looks awful)

    I want to say that you did an amazing game, the story is nice, yes, but the Arts too are cool, I truly like the artistic direction and it was the main point for me who made me try the game.
    The factory part is really cool too and was interesting with a nice learning curve, the same goes for the rate at which we unlock new features and progress in the game.
    I know that many peoples complain about the part when we teleport to the north west corner of the map etc, but for me it was one of the best moment in the game.
    I think that your game deserve far more visibility, it's a gem who earn it's place in the top 5 Factory genre, at least for me.
    With Satisfactory, Dyson Sphere, Mindustry and Factorio of couse, Atrio is the 5th, and I'm just quoting them, it's not a ranking of quality at all, it would be impossible for me to say wish one is better than an other, and it's better like this, It's not interesting to force any sort of ranking, they are all on the top step of the podium
    (I could add Riftbreaker but it isn't really a factory game ^^ )
    Thanks Isto Inc.
    Thanks to you three guys
    Thanks for this great game

    This is a pretty cool video. Never actually heard of you or Atrio before, but i'll give it a look.
    Regarding Control Rebinding: thats a core feature for a lot of people, because not everyone has an American Keyboard. Furthermore, there are probably more people like me out there, that just have problems with a finger. For me, its the little finger on the left hand, so i can't really use Shift while at the same time use "WASD" its one of the default things i always rebind since a ton of games have Sprint there.

  • @b1-rogr470
    @b1-rogr470 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    6:30 Key rebinding should be a priority no matter what type of game you make for the sole reason that keyboards worldwide are just no the same, here in North America you play with w a s d, but here in France for example we play with z q s d because we don't have the same keyboards, so for most us if there is no key rebinding and the game doesn't automatically recognize the azerty keyboard it is not playable in good conditions :/

    I liked this video and thought it was nice that you put in the effort to publicly talk about issues they have had with development instead of going with a hands-off approach, or just listing the changes in a changelog and calling it a day.
    I also like the more human approach you decided to take in communicating and owning the issues you have had as well as the successes you have taken from the experience of creating Atrio. I especially liked that you mentioned you will approach all future gaming projects with key rebinding in mind. I actually really like this in a game for two reasons. The first is to allow me to alter any key binding that does not quite work for me. The second being that it allows me to easily reference what keys do what in the game.

    For a new game i would recommend a necromancer game, there is many out there but rarely do those games get even a fraction of what is possible to do with that concept, and for example iratus lord of the dead is a example of a good game, i like the concept of beating your enemies and collecting parts to craft your army, and balancing your army out since each minion has its own unique traits, if it is possible to make this into a builder and rogue like game i think the game would be really good.

    For the project you need people

    I was tempted to get Atrio during the recent May sales. But one of the top review, a negative one especially, that has been there for 10 days now has one alarming complaint:
    Automation/everything stops working properly when the player goes too far away.
    That is a huge issue for an automation game. If Satisfactory had this issue, I would have not bought it at all. I've glanced at the recent patch notes, the only update after that review, and so far there isn't anything mentioned about this. For now, it will just remain as a wishlist as of May 2023

    I have seen Atrio gameplay videos some while ago, and I also have been playing Dome Keepr a lot lately and I cannot help butthink that maybe, players are frustrated while playing Atrio because of the enemies and the size of the map that you have to cover as an android with no weapons, so, a Dome Keeper inspired thought: what about barriers, like shields or barricades for the enemies to buy some time for players to fend off enemies and then, in order to not attack ( I assume you want to make the game a bit less violent) why not to include some sort of "fending off" mechanism, like traps or sound alarms that would fend off enemies and force them to draw back (for a limited amount of time) ?
    And no, I have not played Atrio yet.

    Great game overall, very interesting and unique design choises, recently 100% it. Took me 13 hours to do a first blind playthrough and it was done manually crafting all end game food supplies because I had no idea how to automate food crops without some timing magic (I didnt know you can just throw items into the planter. I also didnt know you can catch pushers until the very end of the game, thought only toads can be stunned with bombs).
    The main critique I have for the game is that its very plot and feature "heavy" in the beginning and very "empty" near the end. It takes as much time to unlock enegry tier 2 as it takes to unlock 3+4 combined. I've beaten the game never even using energy tiers 3 and 4, maxed out 1 and 2 are perfectly enough. The latter half feels very rushed, like you ran out of time and had to finish the game without adding a lot of planned content.
    Also unlocking stations does not feel like it does anything after the eye station, they are just "nodes with dialogue", why would I keep them connected? They eye station was great though. Friendship!
    Overall, its a fun casual automation game with great asthetic and nice story.

    medieval zomboid would be fun, really exploring the strengths and weaknesses of weapon types vs historical armour would be nice, puncture weapons working better against chainmail and such.
    Would also be cool as fuck to emphasize the tools and things they had back then, since in zomboid you have a lot of convenience like plastic bottles which are wayy lighter than glass or backpacks, since in medieval times they kind of went out of fashion somehow

    Generally speaking, I found from my first release that players have an extremely low tolerance for difficulty. I inow that Souls-likes are big business but I genuinely think people are more attracted to the violence and set piece bosses than the challenge itself. It seems like players will only accept a loss if there's an abundance of ways they could have prevented it and if that means tediously running back and forth across a map to avoid losing their gear you can bet they'll take that as a viable option and blame the devs for how boring it is.

    • @marceloantunes998
      @marceloantunes998 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not so much diffilculty as loss
      Whenever I play a new roguelike I restart save after save just so I have that sweet sweet 1 run 1 win
      Even in nomal games whenever I get particularly annoyed with a death I delete the save and go at it again with the knowledge I gained.
      Now that I'm writting it out it sounds like the arcade experience, I guess this is why they were so popular

    • @KryyssTV
      @KryyssTV ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marceloantunes998 The arcades were popular for a multitude of other reasons though. The cabinets were usually placed in youth centres and arcades themselves often became social hubs. As such, beating difficult video games became the digital equivilent of clobbering the school bully or climbing the tallest tree in the nieghborhood.

    About control rebinding, i’m using french layout on my keyboard and it’s really the first thing that’s really the first thing you notice when your game is hardcoded to work with qwerty, and if you can’t rebind it means you have to change it on windows.
