Hey Rachel I spooned my onions (like you said) & wow last years harvest was fabulous so I will keep doing it :) I have raised beds so I have an old crate that I sit on. You had great success last year, but what helped me was Charles Dowding. He uses a dibber, pops the onions in and doesn't cover them. The rain will cover them eventually. Also Old Alabama gardener has a great onion series on growing onions from start to finish. I used his method for fertilizer last year and it was my first time getting great onions grown from seed.

I'm a spooner, too! I can tell a difference on the years I slack at it. The weather is milder where I am. (Northeast, Texas) I succession plant throughout fall and winter. People make fun of me, but guess who cooks with green onions year-round from her garden? I plant so many though, that I now dig a shallow trench, walk along and drop the onions in, then get on my knees and firm them in on one pass for each row. It really saves my back and knees.

I used your spooning method last year with my onions from Dixon and it really made a difference. I'm in zone 5b and we don't have the longest growing season.
I am still waiting on mine from DixonDale. I was hoping to get them in the ground this weekend but thats ok. Also, I always spoon my onions. I cant remember whos video I saw it from, but yes it helps! Like you said, it may take some extra time, but who cares! Your garden is YOUR garden!

I noticed that you have a few rows of onions in your bed , Dixondale suggested to leave 12 inches in-between rows and dig in ammonium sulfate in the middle of rows, as a first time grower of onions is that process necessary

I will admit that I have a wild two year old running around as watching this so, I don’t believe you mentioned it but you may have. My large garden area just wasn’t ready when my onions clearly were. I have raised beds in a tunnel but have always planted onions in rows same good old way as lord of people. This year however I decided the ones that were rooting and sprouting needed soil so I stuck them in and around my barasicas and cooler weather crops (aside from root veggies) please tell them they’re gonna grow!? I just did this two days ago so there’s time to take them out but I don’t see people doing it much. Maybe I shouldn’t of 🤦🏼♀️
@@1870s I think I will experiment with some but after reading this I did decide to go ahead and plant as normal now that the beds have been fill/amended. I would have like them to settle a bit but I felt I was too much of a gamble considering I use onions basically everytime I cook lol I am going to test it though. Just to see. They’re between some Tom Thumb/baby Bok Choi things like that, that I will be harvesting long before the onions need any kind of room. I’m hoping it goes well but if not it’s not a big loss. When I tucked onions in around my brassicas, I got the best cabbage in years! Fewer cabbage moths seemed to find them! Some of the onions got crowded out but big leaves, so now I plant a block of cabbages, then outline it with triple rows of onions and leeks. Then more brassicas, more onions.
I planted my onions today, grown from seed myself, and I noticed that your stems are a lot wider than mine. Mine just flopped over like little spaghetti noodles. Is that going to be a problem? What can I do? I did sprinkle blood meal around the edges after planting.
I save all my eggshells. Wash, dry, and powder them in a bullet. Then sprinkle them in my garden beds for a nitrogen boost. I do banana peels the same, minus the washing, lol.
Just be aware that unless you are using organic bananas then the banana skins are usually loaded with pesticides and fungicides. Bananas are a heavily sprayed crop!
Yes and no. Depending on your soil your onions can be better than store bought but my soil i have never been able to grow a really sweet onion like vadelia of course its a soil thing. But I do grow some lovely onions but oof they need a gas mask to cut lol. But flavor wise after the tears is still really nice. But yes home grown seem to make me tear up more than store bought. I have been trying new types tho in the hopes of finding one that is sweet here.
I have seen people make reusable shopping bags from feed bags. They would be cute to use that way as a gift bag to give people vegetables when they are harvested. Perfect use to sit and kneel on them. I always end up with wet knees in the garden. Thanks. Different ways at different times, mostly by hand to start then once every is pretty well established I run an overhead 360 sprinkler that get positioned in the middle of the garden. Not the best but it's all I have

Not that I didn't want to bottom water but when I first started my Brassicas and peppers I didn't start that practice until the seeds sprouted, but now I only water from top at planting then I only bottom water, definitely a huge difference
I planted my onions on March 6th in large pots. They are getting taller! "Candy" & "Red Candy" from Dixondale. Also, I love listening to your red winged blackbirds. I enjoy them here too. They love black oiled sunflower seeds
Very different than starting from seeds, which unfortunately is the best method around my part, i have my seed trays now so I'm starting again with them. This way seems much simpler but i would like to grow some good ones this year to put out next year for seeds, i don't know if I would like to buy them forever, but thats just my compulsion to try not be relying on the system to be around i suppose.
So glad I got to see this today. I'm putting in my onion plants the next couple of days. My first time growing them. I've been wondering how to put the fertilizer on. I'm planting in a raised bed, and planning to plant them about 5" apart in squares. In the middle, I'm going to plant some radishes, lettuce, maybe some small carrots. BIG bunny in my yard, so until I get all the alliums in, I want to protect my yummies as much as possible. Very glad to know I can just sprinkle some dry fertilizer on top. I already have some blood meal for nitrogen later. I'm learning a lot from you. PS: I found regular jar lids this week at Dollar General. They are Autumn Harvest? I haven't seen or used them before. Have you?
I've started using Dr. Earth Fish Bone Meal with all root crops. I learned about it from Simple Living Alaska - they use it and grow amazing potatoes. I used to use Root Crops Alive from Gardens Alive. So I sprinkle fish bone meal in the furrow, I put a little dirt on top and then I place my onions. Then once established, I also side dress with ammonium sulfate until they start to form a bulb, then I stop. I also order from Dixondale (they are awesome) and this year I started some onions from seed. But I made sure I had my Dixondale onions in case I messed up my onion seeds. My biggest problem every year is strong winds blowing my onions over. Very frustrating.
I planted my onions about a month or so ago here in Oklahoma! From Dixondale also! My first year so I’m so beyond excited to see how my onions turn out!!

It's just as needed I'd say I'd "try" to keep first inch of soil moist till roots take hold. We are having an extremely dry spring and I may have just lost the majority of mine because we went away for easter and it was really warm and sunny while we were gone with no water 😭

I'd wait till 3 full weeks have past after planting and then start your nitrogen feeding, milorganite, blood meal, chicken manure are all great sources, we bought ammonia sulfate last year and it worked well

First time onion grower - I started my onion from seed and the tops started to brown. They had plenty of water and light. I stopped watering so much thinking that would help. Then someone told me to clip them down - I did so leaving about 3 inches about the dirt. The bulb part of the onion is very small (which I expected) and there is some new growth happening - but they just don’t seem very healthy. Have you even trimmed yours before planting and do you think I’ve made a mistake?
I’m gardening for the first time this year and I’m doing Mels square foot gardening. I’m curious why you don’t do the square foot gardening for onions? I’m wondering now if mine will make. They seem to be doing good so far. I also used bulbs instead of shoots. Not sure the difference but it’s all I could find in store ! This is my first year planting onions and I started seeds in mid February. The tops are very long. Should I cut them shorter now or after I harden them off / at planting? I am planning to get them outside in the next week or so, but we have a cold snap coming. Zone 6a NW Virginia. I also was expecting a lot higher germination rate so I only did one seed per cell instead of a mass planting. Do you think I have time if I start more now to get them to bulb this summer?

The MI Gardner has a video on growing onions 🌰. He says you can plant 4" apart and still get a good size bulb. Also he says that you should cut the green tops when they start to bend to give it more time to grow.

Did I absolutely miss when we plant out onions? I have packets that say “as soon as soil is workable” and some that say after last frost.

Yeah onions are a back breaking job, but so worth it. I’ve been harvesting mine already.

I spoon every year. My onions are baseball size and bigger every time.
I have to put row cover over my starts until they root or the crows will pull them up looking for food. I do this for corn too.
That is a lot of onion. What do you do with them all? Do you give some away? That is going to be a nice crop when it comes in. 😎🌷🌼😍🌱🌻😀👍

Brassicas get pretty big but as long as you think there is room I'm sure they will be fine
Onions will stunt the growth of your brassicas (and beans). I sadly found this out last year 😔

Can I put mulch on my onion bed?

When you transplant out your onion starts you trim back the green top to about 4-6 inches. That should help
Heading back to Montana after an unplanned trip to Tennessee. My onion plants are waiting for me and I'll hopefully get them planted next weekend!

I planted my onions on March 6th in large pots. They are getting taller! "Candy" & "Red Candy" from Dixondale. Also, I love listening to your red winged blackbirds. I enjoy them here too. They love black oiled sunflower seeds
I planted my starts using the seed square. Can I still put on composted chicken manure if I don’t have the trench? I’m worried about it burning.
Very different than starting from seeds, which unfortunately is the best method around my part, i have my seed trays now so I'm starting again with them. This way seems much simpler but i would like to grow some good ones this year to put out next year for seeds, i don't know if I would like to buy them forever, but thats just my compulsion to try not be relying on the system to be around i suppose.
So glad I got to see this today. I'm putting in my onion plants the next couple of days. My first time growing them. I've been wondering how to put the fertilizer on. I'm planting in a raised bed, and planning to plant them about 5" apart in squares. In the middle, I'm going to plant some radishes, lettuce, maybe some small carrots. BIG bunny in my yard, so until I get all the alliums in, I want to protect my yummies as much as possible. Very glad to know I can just sprinkle some dry fertilizer on top. I already have some blood meal for nitrogen later. I'm learning a lot from you.
PS: I found regular jar lids this week at Dollar General. They are Autumn Harvest? I haven't seen or used them before. Have you?
Onion sets from the same place u did first time. I'm in Colorado I don't have luck with onions

I've started using Dr. Earth Fish Bone Meal with all root crops. I learned about it from Simple Living Alaska - they use it and grow amazing potatoes. I used to use Root Crops Alive from Gardens Alive. So I sprinkle fish bone meal in the furrow, I put a little dirt on top and then I place my onions. Then once established, I also side dress with ammonium sulfate until they start to form a bulb, then I stop. I also order from Dixondale (they are awesome) and this year I started some onions from seed. But I made sure I had my Dixondale onions in case I messed up my onion seeds. My biggest problem every year is strong winds blowing my onions over. Very frustrating.

I planted my onions about a month or so ago here in Oklahoma! From Dixondale also! My first year so I’m so beyond excited to see how my onions turn out!!

How often do you water it during the early stage?
It's just as needed I'd say I'd "try" to keep first inch of soil moist till roots take hold. We are having an extremely dry spring and I may have just lost the majority of mine because we went away for easter and it was really warm and sunny while we were gone with no water 😭

Thank you for keeping me going on my first onion growing year❤ Since I put them in with triple 13 and bone meal last week. Should I feed them again this week? Trying to think what I can use for Nitrogen boost, that I may have on hand. 😉🤔
I'd wait till 3 full weeks have past after planting and then start your nitrogen feeding, milorganite, blood meal, chicken manure are all great sources, we bought ammonia sulfate last year and it worked well

First time onion grower - I started my onion from seed and the tops started to brown. They had plenty of water and light. I stopped watering so much thinking that would help. Then someone told me to clip them down - I did so leaving about 3 inches about the dirt. The bulb part of the onion is very small (which I expected) and there is some new growth happening - but they just don’t seem very healthy. Have you even trimmed yours before planting and do you think I’ve made a mistake?
I do trim tops, but not past 10 weeks
I’m gardening for the first time this year and I’m doing Mels square foot gardening. I’m curious why you don’t do the square foot gardening for onions? I’m wondering now if mine will make. They seem to be doing good so far. I also used bulbs instead of shoots. Not sure the difference but it’s all I could find in store ! Love your content and you gave me the push to preserve and can more !
Oh I have many years, just wanted rows this year
This is my first year planting onions and I started seeds in mid February. The tops are very long. Should I cut them shorter now or after I harden them off / at planting? I am planning to get them outside in the next week or so, but we have a cold snap coming. Zone 6a NW Virginia. I also was expecting a lot higher germination rate so I only did one seed per cell instead of a mass planting. Do you think I have time if I start more now to get them to bulb this summer?
Yes trim back your seedlings to 4-6inch green tops before you plant out
I ordered onions from Dixon Dale Farms and will be planted onions for the very first time. I have watched your videos from last year and can't wait to get started. Onions should be arriving next week. Happy spooning!

The MI Gardner has a video on growing onions 🌰. He says you can plant 4" apart and still get a good size bulb. Also he says that you should cut the green tops when they start to bend to give it more time to grow.
