Great harvest! I agree, Dixondale Farms is the best! Great product and outstanding customer service! I did have a handful of bolters this year. Not the product issue, just a weather thing. We have had a very strange growing season here in Western Montana.
Vegetables ARE beautiful 😍 you should take a picture....it would look beautiful framed. I hope to use your practices this year. Thank you for teaching ❤️
Wow! Just wow! I am amazed at your onion haul! Awesome job! Could you please do a few videos on how to grow onions, when you plant, what and how much to feed & water and how often, how to cure & store them properly? The first time I watched the video where you grew huge onions, I never knew that you started from onion starts! That video was monumental for me! As soon as I found out where you ordered your onion starts from, I placed an order immediately. When I got my first order from dixondale farms, We were so excited to get them planted and started. Our first time trying to grow onions from starts was not the best. We were disappointed because we didn't know what we were doing wrong. Oh boy did we find out how much incorrect ways to plant and care for onions. Most people plant their onions IN the ground but little did we know that onions need to be planted ON TOP OF THE SOIL. I am in zone 5 in Eastern Ohio and last year was awful because I knew nothing about growing onions. I was always taught to stick them in the ground and whenever they grow their leaves, I was taught to step on the necks of the onions to help them grow bigger. Sometimes this worked and other times it didn't. I think I only had a handful of onions that actually grew to a baseball size. I grew huge onions this year for the first time❤ ever! Sad part is that I had several go bad on me already. Some of my onions did not really grow and maybe because it was the variety. I got Spanish, Patterson, Walla Walla, a mixed variety of red white and yellow onions. Some of them are just bigger than a green onion to the size of a softball or bigger. We were so ecstatic on all the hard work we did! We actually grew nice size onions to eat and can! We actually did it!! There aren't very many videos on how to grow and maintain onions throughout the growing season. There are different videos on how to cure your onions after harvest but not too many on how to get them ready for storage. The onion farm does not really give you step by step instructions from start to finish, especially if you are just learning. I know that onions take a ton of water and food to grow because I found that out this past year! Lol I cured my onions for a few weeks after harvest and then we braided some together to hang outside in our shed. The rest I hung upside down in our small portable greenhouses. Our basement is sometimes damp when it rains. I'm thinking that's the reason why we have lost so many between September to now. Just trying to experiment to see where the best place to keep them will be. Really hate wasting or losing food that we could have used. Any tips from you guys would really help. Thanx again for the onion videos! ❤❤
Oh my goodness !! What an amazing onion harvest. I wish I could just walk around y’all’s farm and ask questions about gardening. I’m sure I would learn so much. 🥰🧅🚜
Great onion harvest. Good looking an good sized onions. I love your onion wall, I want one too. My family also eat lots of onions. I can't cook if I don't have onions as I put them in everything. Well done. Now you have space to plant up again.
Onions Galore!!!!!! What a beautiful harvest! I love the look of the red onions on the corn crib. Side note...I appreciate the effort y'all put into your videos. The editing, music and the different camera angles all make for pleasant viewing. Thank you so much for sharing.
I’ve been growing onions for many years. Just like you ,I started with sets and starts. I find I get far better results and larger onions that keep better when I start from seed. I start my seed here in VA in February then transplant out after frost or earlier with a bed cover. I have never topped or spooned my onions. I just make sure they are weeded and fed and watered and usually straw mulch.
Wow, now I’m super impressed with the Red Onion art wall! 🙌🏻 🧅 This makes me confident that next years harvest can be a good one for us! Thanks for sharing 💖
Beautiful onion harvest! I can’t believe you guys eat that many onions in a year, that’s amazing. I’d like to see how you use them during the year, I know they’re really good for you. I wanted to say I appreciate the more artistic shots you’re doing, you’re really upping your game!
We put them in all kinds of thing. The pickled onions will take a big chunk. Pasta, even scrambled eggs get carmelized onions sometimes. As for the filming, sometimes it's hard, because we're just posting so much right now. Basically you have 24 hours, to film, edit, and post a video. Plus sleep, work, chores, etc. We love making "pretty" videos, but there's not always time for it. We will keep working to improve our processes. ♥
Dear Todd and Rachel, Thank you very much for your onion harvest video. Between this video and a earlier one, you have provided us with all the onion wisdom required to duplicate your beautiful and bountiful harvest. Your onion harvest matched your carrot harvest. One thing I noticed was that you handled the onions with care; yours was a careful human harvest not a rapid machine harvest; there is a big difference between the two; you have chosen the better way. I was very interested to see where and how you are curing them. I enjoyed your discovery of curing them vertically; one could say it was made to order and waiting to be discovered. I was glad to see in the notes that it will take two to three weeks for the onions to cure completely. I believe there is a small error in the notes : shouldn’t “slips” be “starts”? Once again, thank you for a very informative and pleasing video. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, Canada.
Wow that was amazing.....i am thnking that the vertical wall was much more efficient than the pallet table...makes me think pallet tables with a couple of layers of pallets would be great for squash etc but hang the onions vertically. All those red onions hanging on the wall really was beautiful. :)
We had a major onion harvest yesterday as well. We filled up the kids wagon. Yalls curing set up is much better than ours 😂 our house smells like onions
Awesome! My onions are getting close to needing to be harvested. Same for potatoes from my COVID garden! Hahaha I am laughing about the person asking you "what do you do with all those onions!" If it doesn't have onion and garlic in it's not food at my house!
Onions are on my list to grow. You harvest was awesome! Unfortunately, I wouldn't have anywhere to store that many onions. Using pallets is a good idea. WOW, they are beautiful. 🤗- Liz 👍💯🌴😀🌸🌻👍💯🌴
G'day! Just found some of your videos and they are great. My seasons in Australia are opposite to yours, but once I take that into account, your information is so helpful. Just subscribed and keep up the great work.
We eat mostly red onions, but I've grown a lot of brown ones for storage this year. Try starting from seed next year! You just need to get get started much earlier, but don't plant them out until they are the size of starts or you'll lose a lot of bed space for a LONG time. I've never been able to find starts or sets in Australia so I grow from seed.
Love it wow an amazing haul and so beautifully displayed but not as a display what a great functional space! Wished I could grow red onions without bolting but I have some in from seed so hopefully I might get some my white onions this year were great although a bad year for all that’s happened in the world and personally with my father I’ve harvested more than ever keep growing loving it cheers 🍻

What a great onion harvest guys, woohoo! They look so gorgeous up on the slats of the carriage house, a work of art indeed. Did you get a picture? Thanks for sharing....
Wow - what a haul! Amazing great harvest. I am wondering if you ever considered cutting all but about 6 inches of the green tops when you pull them out of the ground, to freeze or dry for cooking. Does the onion need that top left on to cure properly?
Very informative video. I'm just about to export onions to Malaysia from India. I was unaware of the curing process. A Big thanks. Can you guide me as how to check the temperature of onions??
Good morning Rachael. I planted about 20 just to put in my freezer. Do you know how long I need to let them sit before dicing them? Your onions rocked this year. Congrats!!!Thanks!
Are you not missing out on the goodness of the green stems? They still looked fresh and could be a green onion substitute or frozen to include in soup stock. If you braid your onions to store them, that would be a problem to remove them though. Is it possible to cure with the stems removed?

I lay my onions out on old screen windows. I don't have to be neat about it and have had no trouble with them hardening correctly.

What’s curing? Drying? And why do you do it 🤔
It's a process of removing excess moisture from the onions and the form the papery outer layer the protects them
