I give them just a little bit of a haircut the day before I plant them. I know I don't have to because they will be reaching for the sunlight and end up standing tall. I just like to have them so they don't lay over I like them between 5" & 8". I do it similar to you I planted 9 per square foot and harvest every other one as we need them. Regardless of what people say they still grow big when I grow them with this spacing. I have about 600 growing. We cook with onions all the time.
Something I'd like to mention...I had the misconception that onions didn't have pests, that onions repelled everything. Not true. Last year was my third year planting onions at our new location. Every year, including 2022, the onions grew bountifully and beautifully. Last year we harvested approximately 400 onions of five different varieties. As we looked closer, we noticed tiny worms had bored their way into the onions from where the leaves join the bulb. 95% of the onions were affected by what I later learned were onion maggots. I had hoped to overwinter the onions in our cold storage to use fresh throughout the winter and spring, but had to change my plans and process them instead (I ended up chopping and freezing the good parts of the onion). This year we'll be covering our onion starts. Just thought I'd mention this in case others have the same impression I did. Thanks for your great videos, Gary.
Oh no! 😢. So sorry friend! So, will you plant in a new spot this year? I grow primarily perennial onions (Egyptian Walking Onions s) and scallions. So I’ve always wondered how they are so happy year after year in the same areas. Good luck with this year’s crop. I only ever worried about mold or blight, but so far, so good. Thanks for sharing the tip.
Those are difficult to deal with and I haven't really found a way to deal with them yet. They are a problem with garlic too... I have heard red onions are less appealing to them though.
Virginia zone 7A. I ordered some onion transplants this year and already have them in two raised beds and established. I have 4 grow bags with onions that I over wintered as an experiment. They actually did well. I have about 30 onion plants from the grow bags that are probably 12"-18" tall that I'm inter-planting. There are some large Globo onions also in the grow bags that are doing well.
I love the spacing tip for onions. When I plant garlic in the Fall, I set every other space with a walking onion bulbul and can easily see what I’ll pull in the Spring for fresh eating. Makes good use of my garden space.
Thanks. Good tip. Thank you for this video. Good information! I hope someday my soil will be as nice to work as yours. My soil is still pretty clumpy but this is my first year in ground gardening.
If you have leaf piles in the fall and some space to compost, just leave them in a pile over winter and add your kitchen scraps and shredded paper and such. I do pull back some of the leaves and add the bowl of scraps and then cover with leaves, but I really don’t spend time turning the pile. In the spring it still looks like it will never decompose (northern winters here) but if you keep adding grass scraps and kitchen scrap, all of a sudden it is black gold underneath. Water will speed it up too as Will throwing on a couple shovels full of debris from forest floor. Then in the fall you can cover your beds with this aged compost and then your newly mulched leaves. In the following spring, you will find that the worms LOVE it under there and they will be tilling and fertilizing for you. Happy gardening!!!

I plant onions pretty much the same way, kinda close to use all season. I do one thing a bit different. I heavily water the onion seedlings in, then I feed them with a worm casting extract, sort of a foliar and soil feeding all at once. Enjoy Your videos! Stay Well!!!
Gary how long did it take for your seeds to become the size they are in your video? I started mine about 4 weeks ago and the greens or tops are super small. Did you give them any fertilizer? If so; what kind?
You really have to start them in early to mid January and grow them for about 10-12 weeks indoors if you want them to be the size of Gary's. And yes, you must fertilize them regularly. I like to grow them in individual cells like Gary showed, or even the standard slightly larger cells of a 72 cell flat.

Have you tried to treat the soil with beneficial Nematodes? Nematodes are a biological control method that can be effective against onion maggots.

How did you make worm casting liquid?
Do you recommend mulching onion beds? Thanks for all the informative content you provide.

Thank you
