  • Still not 100% sure what caused my onions to rot - but I assume the moldy onions we purchased from
‪@DixondaleFarms‬ were just two far gone. So let's turn lemons into a learning experience!

For the record I am not bashing Dixondale farms. If you follow our channel, or go back and watch any of my onion videos, I do nothing but promote dixondale farms. I clearly said it could be my fault. And I did leave in package for 2 days after receiving... but that should not have caused the amount of mold found. I have been growing their onions for 4 yrs. Nuff said ❤️

I didn’t think you were you were actually very mild I felt in your experience with your purchase... unfortunately I had a similar experience with my purchase however I opened the package upon receiving , mine were quite small and I planted about a day after receiving. We did get some heavy rain but they were overall weak . I’ve sowed okra seeds in the spots the onions died out .
I will say the leeks that I got from them faired better and are still going.
I’m going to try onions by seed in the Fall . I’m in Georgia so I don’t think it would fair well if I tried to replace the onions at this point 🧡🧡 thanks for sharing the gardener/ farming reality

Dear Todd and Rachel, First off, I enjoy hearing the birds in the background. So natural, so peaceful, oh the sounds of renewal in spring. But, I am sorry to hear about the loss, perhaps 40%, of your newly transplanted onions. Thanks for sharing the downsides of gardening along with the success stories. It was good you wet out and bought a new set of onion starts. Do keep us abreast of how these little fellows do for you. I am optimistic. The key, which you already suggested, is to grow them out until September. This is Sir Armchair Gardener speaking, so take it with a grain of salt. The last point I gently bring to your attention, a lesson I learned some years ago. I bought a pair of shoes at a trusted shoe store, the same brand, the same size, the same colour I had bought for years. Very shorty after I bought them, both shoes started to squeak. Eventually, they wore out. I patronized another shoe store for my next pair. These wore out, so I went back to my previous shoe store. The salesman brought out the old brand. I protested and told him the story. Then, he lit into me and said I should have brought the faulty shoes back. I replied that this never occurred to me because I had worn them for a while . Then he told me that there had been a faulty shipment and many complaints. This shoe store wanted a satisfied customer and my future business. So, Rachel, I gently suggest that the company which supplied you with your original starts, might well appreciate knowing of the problem you experienced this year. Yes, it may well have been a combination of factors, some at your end. But, it might also have been the experience of other growers. You have been satisfied with this company’s starts in the past. They appreciate your business, I am sure. It just may be they will have a good answer for you, and appreciate your feedback. Oh, in conclusion, your hair looks great, Rachel. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, Canada.

In my humble opinion and if this happened to me, I would still contact the seller. Wording it the way you spoke, they were slimey upon arrival; you cleaned them up; lots of rain; possibility of gardener error. You are always learning. Nobody knows everything there is to know about gardening. I encourage you to reach out to the seller; have a conversation; and share with us. I have a hunch it's a combination of several things, but will hold my tongue as I am not omnipotent!

I wonder too tho shipping has still been a bit hit or miss too. Maybe they took too long in shipping.
I mean small packages tend to come quick but my green house took an extra 3 weeks in shipping than it said it would. If those poor plants went too long in uninsulated trucks. 🤷‍♀️
But I have grabbed a bundle of onion starts(not bulbs just like her order) from the dredded Bonnie best. I got just about 50 big onions. Starts and 25 little ones. They were just white onions (the labels were gone on this bunch and they gave me a discount so yay). But they did well so since they carry them at wallyworld they might be easier for others to find.
I would have picked the named ones but it was the last bundle a few years ago.

To be fair to Dixondale, in a previous video she did state that she didn’t open the box for a couple of days. That combined with the slow shipping we’re all experiencing was probably the cause for the rot.

It's better to plant the small starts in the autumn and let them overwinter. Yes, they will survive subzero. Or at least mine did. You should pull most of them out though, shame you put the moldy ones in the ground to spread it. Not every crop makes it, even for the best gardeners. You've done so amazing for a first year seed starter! More wins than losses!

I wouldn’t be so quick to blame Dixondale as they advise removing the onions from the package immediately upon arrival, even if you can’t plant them out right away. As I recall, you left yours in the package for several days before liberating them. I would consider that the likeliest reason for the slimy and ultimately unsuccessful plants. Alas, that’s the life of a gardener. Some wins, some losses, but we keep trying year after year! Way to stay at it and not letting it defeat you!

Hi sorry about your onions . I’d say they got to warm in shipping and it created condensation in the bundle that will make them spoil. You will love the candy onions that’s all I’ve planted for years they get big and keep very good. I’m still using mine that I harvested last august . I’ve tried the candy onions from the starts like your other onions are and I’ve started them like the ones you just bought and I’ve started my own from seed in the house . Truly not a lot of difference in size when harvested but I do like to see the plants bigger when I plant them . The older the plant is the more leaves on the plant which means more rings on your onion which equals bigger onions . I normally get quite a few of them around a pound each . The candy onion is a day neutral onion so it’s good to go wherever you live. I’m from South Dakota which is suppose to be long day onions but candy onions work great here. The only 2 things I do different when I plant them is I trim the roots off at about an inch and a half to avoid J hooking which just means the roots turn and grow back out of the ground and I always water them in using a root stimulator like miracle grow quick start to get them producing more roots and growing faster. Good luck with round 2 👨🏻‍🌾

I bought onions from Dixondale Farms this year for the first time. They came a month early because I didn't know I should have changed the ship date to a month later. I'm in zone 8A (Southern Oregon) but our last frost can be as late as May 7th. My onions came around March 1st. They took almost a week to get here and they were slimy when I removed them from the box. I called customer service and they said to lay them out in a cool dark place to dry and not to remove any of the slimy tops. They can live up to 3 weeks this way. I planted them March 17th in a raised bed (still too early for here) and kept them covered at night due to cold temps. I only watered when the top 1.5" was dry. I did lose a few tiny ones but the others are doing pretty well now. I would contact Dixondale about your situation because I think they would want to make it right.

I'm only a few minutes in, and I know I say it a lot, but I appreciate you coming to us where you are. We all experience the roller coaster of gardening emotions, ESPECIALLY with seed starting and things like this. My onions arrived pretty moist, which had never happened before. Out of the sampler I purchased, I was only able to harvest about a dozen, and all but two were very small. Just about all of them bolted because it got too hot too quickly here as well lol. I had a disappointing onion season all around lol. I don't have to pretend to be happy about it, but I will be optimistic and look forward to those tomatoes blossoming in my garden right now. We just make the best of what we have. I will continue to order from Dixondale. Given the number of successful times I've ordered, I don't think one off order or odd order deter me. Next time, I will just trust my gut and reach out to the company and ask them for their opinion on them. I actually thought about it, but I didn't because I didn't want to inundate them lol. Just lots of lessons learned is all. And we don't celebrate learning from failure enough! It's part of the learning process. I used to encourage my students to fail, but golly, I am "Type A" and need to practice my own advice "P

Yes you should give the seed a try. I'm in zone 5B and I start mine in January. I use recycled spinach containers and just plop down 50 / 60 seeds in each. They take up so little space compared to the tomatoes. They get leggy and I just give them a hair cut. They tweeze out so easily and always look a bit sad for a week or two after planting out. This year we got almost a foot of snow three days after I planted them. I thought for sure they were done in, but a few days later they picked right up. I get huge onions . I also grow candy , walla walla , a red variety , Alisa Craige ( Just because they are fun to grow ) Sweet Spanish and whatever new to me variety I find that year. I bet you will find they catch up very quickly and are harvesting them about the same time you usually do. Your garden is lovely. This year my peppers have gotten some kind of fungal issue. First time ever and I can't for the life of me figure out what I did wrong. I'm pretty sure this year I will be having to buy starts . Theres always something isn't there to make us gardeners pull out our hair. Thanks for sharing Rachel. Breath deep and carry on...............lol

I think you will be surprised how quickly those onions take off. I grew some from seed this year for the first time and found it a bit tedious.... I guess because I didn’t really know what to expect. I also bought some starts and had a small mold issue as well . Some of those starts made it some didn’t but the amazing thing is the onions I grew while a lot smaller took off and left the others way behind . Going to be interesting to see how they turn out . Hope your do well this time . It’s always a learning experience .

Its because they where moldy, they where left together in a bunch too long ,I did the same one year .I bought some replacements from a local farm store ,they did great! I learned when my onions come in to seperate them ,or keep them dry ,they really mold if left in a pack all together in the damp.

I start mine from seed every year. They're a little bigger than those when I transplant them but I've always had good luck growing onions that way. I usually do 5-6" spacing between the seedlings. I bet they'll do great. I like those raised bed tents you got back there. I just picked a bunch of beets that overwintered. I'll have to go look and see how you process yours. I don't have a plan for the ones I picked yet.

I grow mine from seed cause we don't have a big variety available. I start them the first part of January in flats spacing them so I don't have to transplant them right away. Last year cause I didn't have my green house I trimmed them several times before I could get them in the garden. They did OK. This year I put them in my greenhouse in tubs without trimming them and they are doing awesome. I highly recommend trying onions from seed, I've had great luck on germination.

Have you ever tried the walking onions?
I do tend to only cook with the bulbs and plant out all the babies for green scallions. They are so flipping hardy the little 3 pack I had potted up and lost(it was for a friend) i found this spring behind the bench I have. They were frozen solid when I saw them this spring. I brought them in the kitchen thinking maybe I'd chop them frozen into soup. Of course I got to doing something else and forgot them only to see them on the kitchen window sill sprouting and growing.
Almost as easy as garlic. Plus the shapes they make with the top set bulbs is so unique. I wish we could share photos here.

iI had a similsr experience with my strawberry plants that I ordered for one of my Greenstalk towers. Aout a third of the plants had mold on the leaves, and most of those didn't make it. I start my onions from seed. They are so nice and easy to grow. A 72-cell tray (I'm still testing varieties so I set them up in the six-packs) will give me about 600-800 plants. They may be small compared to the starts you get from online stores, but they catch up pretty quickly as long as their roots are decent.

Oh no! So sorry you lost those onions! We started ours from seed this year and just transplanted them last week. I actually didn’t know they should be topped... oops! I garden with my mom and we also spend hours planning out the garden! This is our 3rd year and I think we’ve been good about sticking to the plan so far.

In Michigan, the weather is always so crazy. Let's all just wait til at least week before Memorial Day to plant☘️ all that positivity. I'm anxious to plant, but given the current situation, weather wacky weather, I'm just going to (impatiently) wait..... I'm sad for you guys, but..... Michigan has a reputation.

I'm in michigan too and I havent planted mine out yet but I have tons out there that over wintered.
She might have gotten a bad batch.
It could be a multitude of factors tho. Onions are pretty hardy tho.
My heart hurts for her tho for sure.

Sometimes I envy you that you get to ‘rest’ from gardening over winter. Then I realise how lucky we are to be able to kind of space our seasons out lol Our seasons are pretty much back to back.
The last of the tomatoes and pumpkins are just finishing off and We are just about to plant our peas, garlic, carrots (will sometimes grown year round), broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower. As newbies to growing veg we are still trying to work out the planting schedule but we will get there :)

I decided to start my onions from seed this year. Then planted them out mid April,(Southern On Canada zone 6B). they were smallish about the same size of your new ones. I lost about 1/3 of them , so I have some extra seeds and have just planted them into the ground. Will see what happens, worst thin is I have later onions🤷‍♀️

I might be wrong about this.... but... will share it anyway. I think.... some people grow onions from seed... summer into fall and harvest the tiny bulbs, cure them and retain those for their Spring starts? So i would think if one is ambitious enough ... onion growing from seeds could be a continuous crop all year, so to speak. I have restarted the cut roots (from store bought) onions in water... and had those develop small bulbs after planting ...based on the amount of chambers of the cut end. I kept those in the refrigerator over winter and then planted them as starts in Spring. I got a few "real" sized onions from cut root ends that way. Just think of your endless supply from seeds. I also grew some of my bolting onions seeds as well. I am a fearless and mad patio gardener in San Diego. Why not try everything... twice?

Dang, I'm so sorry. I had the same issue with mine coming in moldy and not doing well either. I'm praying for your onions to give you a good harvest. I wish I had decent nursery that sold onion starts.

Was definitely the state you received them in that was the issue. I've had similar issues in the past. Now I grow my onions from seed every year. They grow just as large and fine as those grown from sets, they just take a little longer to mature. Good luck with your new crop, am sure they'll be fine. :)

It might work better to hold them in the flats for another week or two to let them get bigger and then plant them in warmer and dryer soil in mid may.

Hey hey hey!! Rachel!! Guess what!? I hatched my first chick yesterday. Same eggs I was going to send you, well not the same exact egg but from same chickens lol. It’s sooo cute!! So far it looks solid yellow/white. I guess it’s a leghorn chick and not a black Minorca..can’t wait to see what the other three look like when the hatch.. I really expected some splash or color from the blue laced red Wyandotte rooster...hmm we shall see!!

I was able to start onions from seed 10 weeks ago under shop lights. They looked just like those tiny ones when I transplanted them into the garden. I have a tour of the garden, and you can see how healthy they are looking. I've fertilized them with fish emulsion and blood meal a few times from seed to now. I'm trying to follow your protocol and get some big onions this year!

I LOVE this video! I wish I could have called u up to chat with u.....U will LOVE the Candy onions! I was able to get my hands on a few this spring....I have planted them from packs like u just did for many years...then I started planting them from seed and ventured out to other types.... honestly considering ur great success in all ur other starts this year u have to try onion seeds! I think they r easy....well until one leaves them outside on a day that is more windy than u think and they all blow off the picnic table....then the next week u realize at 2 am when it's 28 degrees that they r still outside...😱😫😩😥 But dang they r tough and very forgiving! I just planted them all in the garden yesterday, here in MN. I almost bought onions from a greenhouse like the ones that died for u....I still may try them...I should plant more....I lost some when the wind threw them all over....🤩🥰👍 Best of luck with ur starts!!! I am super excited to watch the progress....oh and yes I totally think u will get gorgeous big onions! 😍

I bought candy onion starts the end of March. And mine were tiny! And it has taken them a month in my raised beds to be as big as yours you just bought. But mine are growing. I think since I planted all my onions in my raised bed planters they drain well. I planted walla walla starts and they were tiny also when I bought mine. But now they are doing really well. The rest of my onions I bought as bulb starts. And my red, white and yellow ones are up about a 8 inches now. Also my shallots are up about 6 or 7 inches. I also started my own Tokyo green long onions from seed. They are still growing bigger in my greenhouse. I will probably plant them out in a week or so. I have been having better luck growing onions in my raised bed planters than I did in the ground. As we live on the southern oregon coast. We can get alot of rain in the spring and the ground takes along time to dry out enough to plant in. I'm a good 2 months early getting things in this year than I normally do. But will wait till memorial day or the week after to plant my tomato plants I started to put in outside. That's when it will warm up enough to do them any good. Just keep your head up. We all have bad years, or what can look like a bad year. Only to turn around and become the best year.

I thought maybe you had said that you weren't able to take them out of the box right away when they arrived? Wondering if that's why? The onions I got from Dixondale were perfect and are doing really well. There was no moisture on them, so I doubt they would have suffered even if I had waited a few days to open them.

I would say your onions had a fungus and it made them rot. I would have called customer service because their shipping department might have sent a faulty batch out....bad product makes bad business for the owners....
I’ve tried to raise the Wahla Whala from seed but they didn’t germinate well. I feel your pain..gardening certainly has its pros and cons.....👏kudos for trudging on....
