You are correct in your assessment that the drumming feels orchestrated. Up to now, the way that Sleep Token compose songs is, in the main, Vessel (vocalist) writes all the music and lyrics and plays all the instruments and sings all the vocal parts and then II (drummer) composes the drum parts. II has stated in the complete Drumeo performance that he pays particular attention to the vocals to come up with his drum parts with the aim of accenting particular sung phrases or syllables! Really enjoyed your reaction and breakdown. Stay safe 🤘 ✌️
I know nothing about sleep tokens song writing process, but the time signature changes are likely written by a drummer. You probably know the guys name, I do, but he’s a prog/metal specialist and I would venture to say he was the brainchild of a lot of the rhythmic elements of the band.
ii is definitely a drummer’s drummer. All his pieces are written to the song as another instrument and not just to keep time. I love how he uses the entire kit to compliment phrases.
Discovering ST a year ago is what made me get into drumming. No other drummer or artist had made me NOTICE how much the drums can add that II has. Out of nowhere I now find myself more often listening to the specifics within the drums of the song rather than lyrics, guitar etc.
To me, drums, as an instrument, is really another level, my brain cannot understand how a person can do so much at a time 🤯lol. However, it is very interesting to see you analyze it thoroughly and bring it down so we can appreciate it even more. Please do Alkaline. Greetings from Chile!
I love IIs drumming so much and you break it down so well I love when drum teachers react bc they really understand how perfect his drumming is (technique and timing wise) if you wish to continue to react to his drumming. There is also another video of the song higher by sleep token proformed also on drumeo. Thanks for this reaction!!!
“Hypnosis” Istanbul “non-vocal” drum play through is really cool! Great job! LOVE the content so far. As someone who missed their opportunity to be a drummer, I appreciate the heck out of watching folks like you provide awesome insight and energy of my favorite instrument 🤘
I'd love to see you do the rest of II's Drumeo performance. Or check out some of the instrumental live drum versions. Great insights on his drumming! It's fun to see you be impressed by their attention to detail. I love the way he accentuates the vocals so well 🙂
As a fellow drummer, I have always said that ii is the king of "pocket drumming" and this song is a perfect representation of it. Love the reaction and breakdown and hope to see more! For the crazy good drums from ii I recommend Hypnosis, Jaws, The Offering, and Alkaline! Worship!
II has real effortless charisma when playing and sick skills. I just recently discovered ST through Drumeo and he got me into watching drummers more. Going to see them in Berlin on the 22nd of November and im pumped.
There is this point during Sleep Tokens song composition and instrumentalism, where when a musician is listening, their thought process goes to, yea, this is a cool sound… to …. Wow, I just got pulled into this so hard to this and now all I can do is smile.
Great reaction. I really enjoyed the things you point out. I’m not a drummer but it helps me appreciate the artistry more. I’d love to see you react to Tool, Pneuma. The Danny Carey drum cam.
Terrific insight, great reaction from a real drummer! You'll definitely want to check out the insanity of Ectogenesis from Matt Garstka on the Meinl channel.
Hi from a new subscriber. Im happy i found the channel, im not a musician i just love music and ii's drumming is mesmerizing. I call him controlled chaos because his feet are doing one thing, the sticks something wlse rhen a hand comes out of nowhere to stop a cymbal. You should definitely check out the long drumeo interview it's so good. I'll be checking out your other reactions, if you'd like more ii check out his offerings. Have fun!
I paused at 2:53 because I’ve watched the original video before. You saying you’ve never heard the song, and knowing what’s coming…seeing you react to his triplet/sixteenth note snippet and saying “ooh!” Immediately, I was like…He’s not reeeeeady! Haha. I’m excited to finish the video. 🎉
Great vid! You need to watch “Mike Portnoy learns pneuma as fast as possible” Its the best thing I have ever seen to show someone trying to learn something new and hard if not impossible great vid for students
As you listen to more of their songs. You will see that there are electronic drum parts in some. He plays those all live on the pads which is pretty cool. The hour long video from drumeo has a bunch of great songs. This song was recorded at the same time of those videos but just split into it's own video
Orchestrated to a point. II improvises a lot, no two live performances are the same. This version is noticeably different from the album version. In the full Drumeo offering he talks about it a bit.
My dude, you wanna see something even more badass react to "Alkaline" the drumming is just out of this world. My only complaint is that it's not long enough lol.
its funny how you call this an orchestrated piece and contrasting that with the fact that many live drummers improvise their drum fills because while you are right in the sense that II writes his drum parts as the very last piece within the writing process of a song in order to accentuate the various other instruments and special the vocal lines, in a live scenario he also makes sure to leave room for improvisations as well. So while you're making two arguments to point out the difference in an approach to drumming, you're still correct for both points when it comes to II. Yes he orchestrates his drumming but yes, he also improvises...while you can make the argument saying that leaving space for improvisation within an arrangement is also a form of orchestration, nonetheless II is amazing either way.
Just to have it mentioned (appropriate praise aplenty for Sleep Token in the other comments) another interesting drummer with a peculiar flair would be Baard Kolstad from Leprous. If you're interested, you could take a look at "The Sky Is Red" playthrough. Oof, there's SO many interesting drum playthroughs (even for someone like me, who's nothing to do with drums....)...
I like to think the smoke around him here is less from a fog machine and more from how fire the drumming is.

Да, я тоже захотел себе домой установку. Заразительно он это делает.

Man, that stick at 8:06 fucks me up every time. 😂 How can one drummer have that much boss in him?

Watching II do this live was one of the coolest experiences of my life. He truly is a master of his craft
This performance never gets old. Always something new to catch.
Hypnosis next!

I'm so glad you did this song. ii blows my mind. I've watched this Drumeo video so many times and I'm still impressed each time
@@meganxeileen well I have requests for more Sleep Token so I'll be into those next! 😁
@@robbiedrumss6415 can't wait to see them! 🖤
His ghost notes are 🤌
Bro. Hypnosis is the best one.
please more sleep token and II playthroughs!
I don’t know anything about drums, but II is a master , there is no other word.
WORSHIP❤
This is what made me love sleep token and It's also what kicked me off drumming again. I love II's drumming so much
Title should be "Drum teacher reacts to freak of nature" dude is hands down one of the best drummers ive seen in years
INTERESTING that II's (AP's) crash/ride cymbal/s are arranged so that it doesn't matter if they hit each other, pretty much throughout the track.
The drummer is the best in this band by far.
There is this point during Sleep Tokens song composition and instrumentalism, where when a musician is listening, their thought process goes to, yea, this is a cool sound… to …. Wow, I just got pulled into this so hard to this and now all I can do is smile.
Watch the entire Drumeo video as well as some of the live drum cams if or when you get the chance. I never tire of watching him play.
Great reaction. I really enjoyed the things you point out. I’m not a drummer but it helps me appreciate the artistry more. I’d love to see you react to Tool, Pneuma. The Danny Carey drum cam.
You'd really enjoy his first drum playthroughs. Specifically the video titled, "An offering from II - Hypnosis."
Loving your breakdowns and analysis!

Thomas Pridgen used to be my favorite drummer.
Dirk Verbeuren is on Drumeo toooooooo!!!!!!
Vore is amazing
Mask or not I know a drummers stank face when I see it , mf hit that wicked solo into the fill to the breakdown and literally came 😂😂
Its kinda sad that the Rather ''smaller'' TH-camr's (>10.000 Subs) make those really good Videos. Keep up the Great Work mate!
@@mackjack984 aww thank you so much! I've been away a while thanks to illness and then holiday, but I'll be back soon with more!
Hello, ii.
As someone who can play almost all kind of instruments except percussion, i never care much bout drummers in band except Joey Jordison and II.
I’ve tried but I just do not care for this guys drumming. He’s objectively good. I guess it’s just a matter of taste. Does nothing for me.
I felt that way when I first heard these guys. The more I listened the more I liked him. I have grown to appreciate him, but I get it.
II used to teahc drums himself so eharing speak about his drumming is brilliant
Jesse pinkman what’s up dude
