Hello, I would like some advice on a lionel 628 that I have, after 45 years I wanted to put it to work, first of all with some videos I disassembled it and cleaned the E unit and the engine. My problem is that it only goes forward and does not reverse, I checked that unit E did all the cycles and it does. Some tell me that it could be the motor armature but because if it works forward, how could I do a test. If you could answer me I would appreciate it. Greetings

A few reasons can cause that, is the motor trying to turn in reverse or no response at all? If the motor is not responding at all then I would check that the "fingers" on the E-Unit are actually contacting the drum. If the motor is trying to spin but unable, then a couple of items to check. Make sure the thrust washers are present on the top of the armature shaft, if they are worn or missing that can cause the armature to raise up too high and stall the motor. One of the harder things to resolve is the plastic bearing plate which holds the bottom end of the armature shaft. These plates were a common problem. They would become loose and fail to keep the bottom of the shaft in line for proper gear mesh. This would cause it to lock up in one direction or another. The best way to fix that is to try and move that bearing plate either forward or backward and see if the motor spins. Once it does spin you can gently squeeze the truck side frames that hold it in place. I hope this helps you out, let me know if you find the problem.

Hello again, thanks for answering me. In this video the plastic cap that is at minute 5:35 is seen without any problem but in video 3 at minute 7:00 you show a nylon washer that is not there. It is likely that it disintegrated over time, it could be that ?. I have not obtained the manual for the 628 and I do not know the specifications of that washer. Could you specify it for me? Greetings

Should it be right on the axis?

Good morning and yes that is called a thrust collar washer and it should be there, sometimes they stick to the brush housing when you remove it or fall out onto the floor without noticing. . They are made of nylon and sit on the top side of the armature shaft. There is a very tiny ball bearing that rests in that plastic bottom plate that the lower armature shaft sits and that also can be lost very easily. I purchased my thrust collar washer from this seller on eBay. www.ebay.com/itm/394856477484?epid=14043785831&hash=item5bef47b32c:g:fZoAAOSwuxJkkVXA&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4I1vR5mk41Atyn3miQ%2BOOWBAhLqbNpEcjbir%2B2pdIzwiiDC%2FAxbeTKdNl1DR4PI96HZ3cMWZwRg4weOS6zswLUiOj0n2Gzo%2BgUchMivmPLQAKSCpsv5MMgOGAV78L3sJ4drmq6XzJeFILZqlZ3lN6ZvYTQeFJKmQgDd9jte1dLwM1fisK3JobX9NHfds02BTTlxQKT156IBNXbg1Hd0zR13HrhWk8ERm0%2F5Gb%2BJEoL1r5%2BvX4yzwub46j81sTL9Di2atFeJTlzm%2FtbR9z0ezAbRn4mEWKmLiHVcUtycf7wAk%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_TDwdCEYw
