What an unexpected gift to me on this 4th of July! 🎉🎉🎉 I love this band! And this album in particular. I’ve always thought of The Shins as kind of picking up where R.E.M. left off, which…don’t @ me. 😛
I would definitely recommend at the very least taking a look at The Shins’ next two albums, Chutes Too Narrow and Wincing The Night Away, with Wincing The Night Away being my favorite.
If you like the Shins lead vocalist, James Mercer, he's also the vocalist in a band called the Broken Bells. Great tracks are Ghost Inside, The Mall & Misery, The High Road, and Holding on for Life.
The last song on the record, 'The Past and Pending' is one of my favorites in The Shins catalogue. 'New Slang' is considered an all time indie classic, famously featured in the film Garden State (with Natalie Portman).
Thank you for reacting to this! I think the guy you are referring to from the Beach Boys is Mike Love. He was the main vocalist, Brian Wilson had a lower voice and did most of the songwriting. The only real drawback to this album, for me, is it is often hard to understand Mercer's vocals, with the distorted guitars and the Wall of Sound type production techniques that they used. Overall it contributes to their signature sound, but it does make the vocals harder to understand, plus Mercer sounds like he mumbles at times. This is such a great album though, and I enjoyed your review of it.
Well no, Brain Wilson sang most of the famous high harmonies, and Carl Wilson sang quite a few of the famous leads. It was all shared responsibilities when it came to Beach Boys vocals. Now the instrumentation was another thing though - the Wrecking Crew helped with a lot of the recordings during the BB's classic era. Brian Wilson sings lead on: Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Surfer Girl, Don’t Worry Baby, The Warmth of the Sun, Sloop John B (1st verse), Let Him Run Wild, We’ll Run Away, Surf’s Up (with Carl on lead as well), and others. Carl sings lead on God Only Knows, Good Vibrations, Darlin', Girl Don’t Tell Me, Breakaway (verses), Feel Flows, Cabinessence, I Was Made to Love Her, Long Promised Road, and others...
The Shins are just fun.

"Your lips when we speaks are the valleys and peaks of a mountain range on fire." One of my favourite Shins lines.
Me too

Mike Love was the baritone. He sang some lead vocal parts, but the bulk of the higher lead vocals were supplied by Carl with harmonies from Brian.
One of my top 10 bands
