One of my favorites by them. So many interesting chords and chord changes throughout the verses and the chorus. And the melodic choices James Mercer makes are super creative as well.
    Never gets old for me.

The song takes place in New Mexico. The Eldorado High School (lyrics "The E.H.S. Norm") is in Albuquerque which is where James Mercer lived for a long time and founded The Shins in 1996. Goatheads are these insidious little grass burrs that have 2 big thorns on them that make them look like the horns of a goat that are native to New Mexico, but in this case, I think Mercer is talking about Goats Head Soup which is a Rolling Stones album. Northern New Mexico has a large Hispanic population and Catholicism is a big part of the culture, and all the oppression and guilt for LGBT+ folks that goes along with that, so that's probably where the religious imagery in the song comes from.

Loved the Shins since day one. Guy in work bought the first album, hated it, and I got it from him for $5. Now they’re one of my favorite bands. James Mercer writes the most interesting melodies. Try “So Says I” and “Australia”. “Turn a Square” too!

If you're looking for more from the Shins, I recommend Saint Simon. Just realized that I was the one who suggested this a year or two ago. lol Thanks for always eventually getting around to stuff. I love your channel. You listen to alot of great music and always keep an open mind.

Goat Head Tunes > Goth music ( Marilyn Manson ) etc.
Cheap shots from the tribe > school bullies

Really enjoyinh your eclectic taste in terms of what you choosing to react to. Grew up with the shins during my Teenage angst days, along with Wolf Parade , but would love it if you could react to tv on the Radio -wolf like me

It is about the alienation of being a young lesbian in the religious north. Verse one highlights the isolation, 1-5-1 referring to one girl alone followed by five in a clique then another alone separated by the social and physical all in a frozen, hopeless landscape - just to be sacrificial lambs devoured like ham. In verse two hope is presented as rising above. Verse three is high school as the loners follow the crowd, but up against the walls. Verse four the escape to their booze and tunes. Verse five is drunken stumbling around this place that is supposed to be a home but is shallow and weird instead. "Milk from the window lights" is the opaque winter sun illuminating the interior in insufficient light. Verse six is the surrender to hopelessness, age has stolen our hope. Where before they could step over the s*it, it is now stacked to the sky. They have lost connection with the feelings of the past. In verse seven they are simply the walking dead. A song about how coming of age robs you of the purity of youth.

How about "If you found this its probably too late" by arctic monkeys? its a short one but a good one
Or maybe D is for dangerous, if you haven't done it already
