    I recommend adding a bit of lime zest to soups (especially soups with veggies) because it adds a little sour and tangy flavour to the soup. I made veggie soup today and added a little bit of lime zest and it tasted amazing! I hope some one tries out this method of flavouring soup! Believe me, this method saved my life.
    A bit of fresh spices also adds just a little bit of a spicy taste to any soup! I recommend using some spices which are NOT grinded because I find those types of spices ruins the spice flavour in the soup OR you can put a little bit of hot water to the spice and then adding it to your soup because not only they make the soup last hotter just a bit longer but it also enhances the flavour of spice to the soup.
    Also I want people who are reading this comment to take notes that I’m not an experienced chef and I’m just telling suggestions that I tried from MY own experiences that I thought was good for me. Of course, not everyone has the same taste buds as me but if it doesn’t taste nice enough for you, just know that you tried something new (even though you don’t like it). Thank you if you tried out my suggestions but also thank you if you saved a little bit of YOUR time to read my comment. Have a nice day/night.
    :)

      Excellent tip for flavor Technic!!! I probably won't use it just because corn is a limited food, and juicing it would result in removal of the fiber and addition of too much sugar/starches. Because we do limit starchy veggies. Carrot, celery and tomato juice are the exceptions, since they are lower in sugar/starch. But for those not doing the Nutritarian plan, that would be a fantastic tip!!! Thank you!

    So many great ideas! I find that different soups seem to call for different "salt subs" ie: Italian bean soups - vinegar, Mexican bean soups - lime juice, creamy cruciferous soups - nooch. Yes! Juicing your own carrots (veggies) tastes soooooooooo much better in a soup. My first Fuhrman soup was terrible b/c I used bottled carrot juice. Never again! Thanks for the informative video Cheri!

    • @WFPBRecipesWeekly
      @WFPBRecipesWeekly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhhh Terry what great tips! I haven't been able to get into the whole vinegar in soups things yet, but I love the idea that maybe it's just the right type of soup I need. Do you have a recipe for an Italian bean soup that you use often? And what vinegar do you recommend to go with it? And YES on the lime in Mexican bean soups. It's hard when we first make a Fuhrman soup and expect it to taste so great, and it's just so bland. I never tell people to make soup first, because I think it's an acquired taste that requires skill, but I totally worth the effort...over time!! Thanks for the great comment, my dear.

    • @goodingestions8752
      @goodingestions8752 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so right about the acquired taste thing, hee hee. So, for what seemed like years I made at least once a week a tweaked version of Ellie Krieger's Tuscan Vegetable Soup; double the beans, no oil, no salt, no parm. I always use red wine vinegar in those type soups. Dr F's Easy White Bean and Kale Soup (10 in 20 V2 day 9) is another perfect example. AND I typically season my bowl with turmeric, black pepper and either Sriracha or hot sauce (little bit of sodium though.)
      One of my new favorite soups is Dr F's Herbed Split Pea Soup. Was sent to members around April 4. So good as is!

    Hey, Cheri! Helpful video! I'm actually making soup right now (: I love to first make roasted chickpeas, then use the bean stock as my soup stock (I buy the dry beans; the canned ones can't compare). After my veggies have been cooking for a while, I toss in some of the roasted chickpeas for good measure. Hope that makes sense. Since the roasted chickpeas have already been seasoned, they add a yummy flavor. They add a bit of crunch, too, if you don't add them too soon.

    • @WFPBRecipesWeekly
      @WFPBRecipesWeekly  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Season!!! Hello my dear!! Ohhh yummy, what great timing! :) I completely agree on canned beans. Made from dry is so good! I love this idea of using roasted ones for some extra flavor and even having some crunch from throwing them in. I never would have thought of this -- great suggestion! Thanks woman. :D

    I definitely came into this a skeptic but I made a veggie soup last night w/ low sodium broth using about 1/4 cup of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar & Bragg's Nutritional yeast to "cheese" it up & it really did satisfy my taste buds need for salt. Now mind you, I'm only a week into this salt free diet & I'm still craving salty everything. I literally have dreams about salty food. So to find something that takes the edge off of the blandness is a beautiful thing. Thanks for these ideas!

    Wow! Cheri, you really packed a lot of info into that video. Even though I haven't added salt to my cooking in years I have to admit when I couldn't get a flavor right my thing of last resort was always worcestershire sauce and that is loaded with sodium. So thank you for all of the additional info of what to do instead. One question, what do you do with the pulp of the vegetables after you juice them. Years ago I tried juicing and stopped for 2 reasons. 1. The juicer was a real b----to clean and 2. I would save the pulp telling myself I would use it in baking or in a soup or something and end up having to throw it out. So always felt guilty. Thanks for the informative video though.

    You are a genius! These are really innovative tips! I’m eliminating table salt from my diet because it keeps me constantly bloated (retaining up to 15 lbs of water after eating a fast food meal), gives me headaches and makes me constipated/dehydrated. I thought I would have to give up eating soup but using natural sodium from vegetable juces and nuts is a great idea thaaaaaanks 😍

    I just made my first salt-free soup from your recommendations [best soup I have ever made]. I think you should write a booklet called "ZEN AND THE ART OF SALT FREE SOUP, OR COOKING". NO recipe's just advice on seasoning and cooking. There are a lot of people that cannot deal with recipes. It took me 30 years to figure out how to cook without recipe's; by taking them apart and learning combinations that are excellent [see the flavor bible]. And I am still learning. But it will take another 30 years [that I do not have; being 72 years old] to learn how to make really good food without salt. If you have a 'Recipe'-Free / Salt-Free / Meat-Free' book I will buy it.

      HI Kelyrin! If I remember this one correctly, it was something like peppers, onions, carrots, sweet potato, some kind of beans, and maybe some other veggies, plus low sodium veggie stock...and maybe a grain like barley or wheat berries or something. Then you'd do the cashew trick I mentioned and flavor with say lemon juice and more nutritional yeast. :) Hope you can come up with something you love!

I am surprised of so many different ways-all raw, mostly fruits, mostly carbs. This ways fits me the most, I believe. I will be soon through with a detox with the Green Smoothie Girl, then be ready for the Eat to Live way. I take it we can use canned beans. Do they have to be No Salt added or low sodium? Hard to find no salt.

      I think that your plan sounds wonderful Carolyn! Welcome to the club!! :D Yes canned beans are fine! But no-sodium preferred, but low sodium ok if that's all you can find. And if you get an instant pot, they are super easy to make at home yourself without salt, because you don't have to pre-soak them to cook. Just a tip for down the line.

    MSG isn’t bad tho, it’s found in many foods including tomatoes

    • @WFPBRecipesWeekly
      @WFPBRecipesWeekly  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're referring to naturally occurring glutamate, which yes is found in many foods naturally. But when I say MSG, I refer to the extracted and crystallized version of it, which is an additive. The general idea is that extracting things from their natural foods and adding them in a concentrated version isn't eating the food or ingredient in the way it is intended. Like loading up on taking a certain, extracted vitamin beyond what is needed for the body isn't necessarily helpful for the body since it has to process it much more differently than if it was a whole, natural food and present in a normal quantity. The effect of this type of thing is unknown or harmful in a lot cases, so I like to be cautious about what I consume that isn't in it's natural state.

    Table salt might be bad for us, but Himalayan sea salt is extremely good for us and small amounts.

    • @WFPBRecipesWeekly
      @WFPBRecipesWeekly  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks Darlene, but on this lifestyle we don't agree. There's lots of info on this in Dr Fuhrman's books but it comes down to the fact that no matter where the salt comes from, it's made of the same stuff that does harmful things to our bodies, and can lead to serious consequences such as heart disease and stroke. And the "trace" amount of minerals that everyone says are so important in any type of salt (Himalayan, or any other kind) are just that: trace. Meaning, a very small amount. You can get thousands of times that amount of minerals in vegetables, so the risks associated with eating salt, of any kind, are not worth the miniscule amounts found in salt. And we get plenty of sodium from the whole plant based diet, so no sodium issues there. Hope that clarifies the emphasis we place on having no salt. And thank you for watching!!

    I did get some good ideas for soups (I also make about 1.5 L of vegetable soup that I eat over the week). So I look forward to trying some of them. However I feel some of the information you gave was sketchy too. 1) IMO, Benson's Table Tasty salt substitute is an excellent product and while yes it contains a fortified yeast extract it states plain as day on the Nutritional Facts that it has 0 mg sodium. 2) somewhere in the video you say carrots are "high sodium" ? What do you mean by "high" I guess? Generally a "serving" of fresh raw carrot has only 45 mg of sodium ( I would not call that high?) -- carrots ARE high in potassium -- 200 mg). 3) In that same part of the talk you say but it is "natural sodium" and that is not bad for you?? What? NO! That is wrong. Sodium is a metal atom and whatever the source on this planet it is exactly the same atom and the body can not tell the difference because there is no difference. Sodium is sodium end of story. 4) finally you caution against nitrates? Why? Nitrates are good and essential. You are probably thinking of issues with nitrate when used as a meat preservative? The problem there is that meat also contains amines -- and when nitrates and amines are heated (e.g., frying bacon) nitrosamines can be formed and they are carcinogenic. But that separate issue aside you NEED nitrates in you diet -- LOTS of it -- that is why we eat things like kale, chard, spinach etc. Nitrates are good and they are essential for making nitric oxide the most important signalling compound it the human body. Problems or lack of nitric oxide is responsible for ALL human vascular diseases including heart attacks, strokes, pulmonary hypertension, many kidney diseases and the list goes on and on. You need nitrates in your diet.

    I'm not sure I understand why naturally occurring sodium is okay, as opposed to the sodium in added salt. Sodium is sodium, it's an element, and your body shouldn't care about the difference of where it came from.

    • @WFPBRecipesWeekly
      @WFPBRecipesWeekly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because when it's not naturally occurring, it's added in addition, you end up eating way more than your body needs. When we eat only naturally occurring, we can't eat too much because the caloric and fiber density will stop us.
