    Lyrics:
There was a wild colonial boy, Jack Doolan was his name
Of poor but honest parents, he was born near Castlemaine
He was his father's only son, and his mother's pride and joy
So dearly did his parents love their wild colonial boy
Barely sixteen years of age, he first began to roam
And found Australia's sunny shores, and called it his true home
He robbed the wealthy squatters, their assetts to destroy
A terror to the rich ones, was the wild colonial boy
Back in eighteen sixty one, began his wild career
With a head that knew no danger, and a heart that held no fear
He held the Mudgee mail coach up, and he shot Judge MacEvoy
A curse to every copper was the wild colonial boy
Later on that very day, as Jack he rode along
Listening to the kookaburras, pleasant laughing song
He spied three mounted troopers, Kelly, Davis and Fitzroy
With a warrant for the capture of the wild colonial boy
"Surrender now, Jack Doolan, for you see we're three to one
Surrender now in the Queen's high name, or your living days are done"
Jack drew two pistols from his belt, and he waved them proud and high
"I'll fight, but not surrender", cried the wild colonial boy
Jack fired once at Kelly, brought him to the ground
Then turning round from Davis' gun, received his mortal wound
A bullet pierced his proud young heart, from the pistol of Fitzroy
And that's the way they captured him, the wild colonial boy
Yes that's the way they captured him, the wild colonial boy

And thats they way they captured him, the wild colonial boy.

On revisiting this I remember my grandmother.A small Irish woman widowed at a young ago.Raised a family mostly single handed as my grandfather was in the army.If you happened to walk around the back door of my grandmother's home at 3am,you may have been met with the smell of frying bacon from the kitchen window and the sound of her singing "the wild colonial boy".A character I have never known her like since. So smart, well read, crochet, music, turf, cigarettes.A dog by her side, mostly. She had a stroke in February 1979 and lived til November that year.I walked to the local hospital every day after school to visit her.She never spoke a word.I guess she had all her singing and talking done.My children never knew my granny Molly.I want to be singing and frying bacon when I'm 76.

I took my wife to see Dennis perform when he came to Australia in May 2014. He sang all the old songs from Dr Hook and several newer songs from his solo career. We both loved every minute. It was such a pleasure to hear him sing this signature Australian folk song. The timbre of his voice lends itself so perfectly to the mood, the sentiment and the period in history in which it is set 1840 (ish) . Sing on Dennis !!! If you come to Oz again while I am still bobbing around on this mortal coil I will certainly try to be there to welcome you.

You will never hear a finer accompanist. He would've made anyone sound good. The song might have made a bigger impression in Oz if they had got the protagonist names in the historic order of the saga. I think Judge MacEvoy is Judge MacIlroy or some other error, like one of the coppers names and the judge's name are arse about, that really stuck out because this prominent recording was otherwise truly memorable. Now I have to go back to my colonial history roots and dig it out /blush.

I am now a young slim fit 60 yr old, But watching this and a few others I am 30 yrs younger. Wish I new then how many good songs they had. Would love to have seen them. The few I have seen are John Denver, John Foggarty, John Williamson.and a few others But hell these blokes are and were great. And Ray, rest in peace my friend. AJ.

If you like the song, and are a Patriot, one might watch "The Man Who Predicted 9/11". It is the story of Rick Rescorla. He was an Englishman of Irish Descent. Growing up in WW2 England he developed an admiration of the US Army. As a young man he served overseas in the British Army. Discharged from such he emigrated to the US and joined the US Army. He fought with distinction at the battle of the Ia Drang Valley with the 1st Cavalry. He sang this song to steady his men. Later he became head of security at Morgan Stanley. He evacuated all in his charge after the attack on the WTC. He was last seen going back up to check if all had made it to safety. He was never seen again. RIP Wild Colonial Boy.
