From Unplayable to Meta Threat - Babycerasaurus

- Babycerasaurus is a low stated level 2 monster with the effect, that if it's destroyed specifically by a card effect, you get a special summon any level 4 or lower dinosaur monster from your deck. This card was released in 2006, and saw absolutely no play, because it had the terrible effect of needing to be destroyed by a card effect specifically. In an age where floaters like mystic tomato were more common, only having the trigger being 'destroyed by card effect' was seen as a detriment. And this was a case for 11 years until 2017 when the Dinosmasher's Fury Structure Deck was released.

The definition of “aged well over time.”
Aged like fine wine.
Funny how they are dinosaurs
If only it could summon from the hand as well 😔
Idk, I don't think the Baby lived long enough to actually age.
I see Time Wizard won the coin toss.
pop da baby
Summon da baby
Kick da baby
NO, DON'T KIC--- I MEAN POP THE BABY

New player: What's your deck do?
Dino player: Kill babies.
Kills babies, promotes evolution, and has robotic dinosaurs too! (Scrap raptor)
@@undeadinside3571 it's the creationists' nightmare! 😮
(Although they already hate this game so it doesn't matter 😂)
I just love how Dinosaurs revolve around the concept of "survival of the fittest" and make it their play style. The point of all the babies getting popped is so that the few strong ones grow up to adulthood and become fearsome predators.
I love how this idea is also present in Cardfight Vanguard, where the Tachikaze clan (dinosaurs) all have abilities that revolve around sacrificing other dinosaurs.
Also the oviraptor is based off a dinosaur that eats dino babies and eggs, once the raptors are fed then the big bad tyrannos come in and eat the raptors until they run out of food and start eating your opponent.
@agunsson - Not exactly. Souleating Oviraptor was based off the *old* idea of Oviraptors of what they probably ate. Many Dinosaurs eat eggs just like animals now. Eggs are good in protein.
This is what I love about Yu-Gi-Oh. Any card can become amazing if enough time passes and a new card is printed that interacts with it in a positive way.
it doesn't happen most of the time, what usually happen is that old card see no play, then Konami made a "better" version of theese cards, so the old cards will never seen play again
@vonakakkola sometimes it happens what you said however, legacy support is different. Look at the gimmick puppets, you still use giant grinder. Or dark world support you still use grapha, and most of the good dark world monsters.
@@vonakakkola It happens often enough. Just look at Gren Maju, Neon Spacian Aqua Dolphin, Grinder Golem, and Tyrant Neptune.
And like the above comment said. Sometimes the "better" cards existence can boost the usage of the old one.
Grinder golem is forever best example, from absolute joke of a card to high level meta that it was so good it needed to be banned and still is
then there's smoke grenade

I find the idea really funny, that the deck is driven by a bunch of big dinosaurs smashing a baby dino
So that why it called dinoSMAHER'FURY

I love when old forgotten cards suddenly become amazing with new cards that come out
Best thing about no set rotation.
@@realpatriot1769But no rotation is also responsible for this game taking 3 turns on average.
@@N12015old ygo also only took that long. Only goes longer if both players Bricked hard or the format was control focus.
You are lying to yourself otherwise
I couldn't agree with you more I just wish Konami would get with the program and release a bunch of cards that should've already been printed years ago like balrog aka gorlag that alistor used and parasite centipede and poison butterfly from weevil
@@N12015Games might take fewer turns than they used to, but I'd say the amount of interaction and back & forth play between you and your opponent is roughly the same or potentially even greater than it used to be.
I always assumed the reason the dinosaur deck was made like that was specifically because of Babycerasaurus
Pop da baby, special summon da baby, pop da baby
I'm still waiting for Baby Brachi, Stego and Para so I can complete a Land Before Time collection.
Wonder what effect they could have. Searching spells/traps ? Summoning dinos from graveyard/banished zone ?
Don't forget the "Tree Stars" equip spell.
@@MenwithHillneither of the 2 baby dinos summon from hand either, so probably 1 for hand, 1 for grave
“lesgooooo pop the baby”
-Souleating Oviraptor
and then scraps came along like "hello there woo woo"
And then later later on came Ground Xeno, turning Babycerasaurus into a 2-card combo starter
Just when I was thinking about making a dino deck in master duel, this short solidified that decision.
100% do it. I became a Dino fan since Ground Xeno was announced in the OCG and I couldn’t be happier seeing it and Babycera in my hand as a 2-card combo starter that leads to a board of 6-9 interruptions
Explaining the joke to the one thing Farfa laughs at.
Turns out having an entire TYPE changed to be built around you and synergizes with your effect can turn you into a decent card
I remember having fun with Babycerasaurus in my casual dino deck. Getting something back off of a Torrential Tribute was fun~
Dinos now just invalidates board wiping cards with the inclusion of the Transcendosaurus cards that revive themselves by shuffling a vanilla Dinosaur back to deck
2035 : Darklord finally meta
Darklord despia was kinda meta in master duel for a little bit
And there's also the fact that it and Petitranodon's effects aren't once per turn at all. I love this card and how almost all following dinosaur cards and support can pop cards in your hand or field because this card exists. There's a part of me that's glad Dinosaurs aren't top tier because they'd have a lot of cards on the ban list if they did.
Misc is already limited right now (except in Master Duel where they seem to be a lot more lenient with the banlist so stuff like Kitkallos and Spright Elf remain unbanned and Misc isn’t seen as a problem)
I play Dino FTK and pull off the ftk 95% of the time going first.
One of the main reasons baby is better than petit is that baby can summon baby (or petit) but petit can do no such thing.
Additionally, most of the good high level dinos are nomi and can't be summoned by petit anyway (with the exception of pank) and not getting to attack is bad in the blind second OTK builds
Ngl Dinos need better high level monsters that can be ss
Xeno/transcendosaur Meteorus also pretty good too
It just not every dinos deck have to play those 2 and people who use usually just put 1 of each in deck
@@nguyenlightduy7020 yeah I played dinos at the start of master duel before those came out, it would be natural if this is different nowdays.
But aren't those dinos mostly used for their hand effects?
@@tcoren1 maybe Transcendosaurus Meteorus, but only if you want to destroy other dino in your opponent turn, otherwise just special summoned it in your turn and use it second effect
And probaly not Xeno meteorus since its hand effect just another way to special summon it
I love how this card defined how future cards were designed just to break this card 😂
He's so CUTE!
POP THE BABY(cerasaurus)
2017 is the ages of dinosour where a lot dinosour deck is a tier 1. During this team we don have yet a 1 card combo deck and this 2 card combo ridiculous good. This why pankratops, oviraptor and miscellneosaurus been hit in limited and Forbidden list
Pop da baby
I started playing again shortly after that structure deck came out and Dinos became my new favorite type to play.
Its weird how it was "bad" pre-D.A.D. and just never saw play after popping things became the go-to way of removal, until 2017 when the structure came out.
I mean, it makes sense it would be bad pre-D.A.D. . Children growing up without father have it rough.
POP DA BABY SUMMON DA BABY POP DA BABY ADD THE BABY POP DA BABY DABABYDABABYDABABY
"Pop da baby" Farfa
I love the way the two dinos have the egg shell on opposite sides of their bodies. Creates an interesting juxtaposition along with their opposing effects
Back in duel links I don’t really use it much while playing Dinos but in master duel players take advantage of its effect by summoning it more than once a turn to call for more dinosaurs from the deck.
It's cause you can special summon another baby vs the other one only being able to grab level 4 or higher.
If this card had said "if this card on the field is destroyed by card effect" instead, it would still not see any play.
pop da baby summon da baby pop da baby lesgoo
I played against a dino player at locals, asked "are you gonna pop the baby" and he just sighed and normal summoned babycerasauras
Souleating Oviraptor wants to know your location
Funny how this video came up today when I actually built my Dini deck just yesterday.
The best thing about old card is their lack of "one per turn"
They grow up so fast.
Dinosaur aging well over time. Classic.
I want to believe that a Konami employee went mad when he saw that tyranno super conductor (the og one) didnt work with babycerasaurus and just decided to create an entire archetype around it
When this card started being used in Duel Links, it was one of my favorite decks ever
babycerasaurus being the oldest card in the dino engine is hilarious.
I will never not be funny to me that dinosaur players are encouraged to kill babies and are rewarded for it.
Lost World and Jurassic World is from Jurassic Park which is nostalgia for dinosaur types
Me and my friends found this card before the Dino structure deck and scooped up a ton of copies in anticipation (it was like $0.20/card or something). We thought it was too obscure to be remembered by Konami, but it came with the structure deck anyway lol
Its always amusing how old 'useless' cards back in the day, to suddenly becoming meta or even so broken that it goes to the ban list.
Cough smoke grenade of the thief cough
Neo Spacian Aqua Dolphin...
That’s one of the reasons why I like that Yugioh is a legacy format TCG. Unless it is on a ban list, every card is playable, regardless of when it came out so players can find some wild stuff just about every time a new set is revealed/released.
I love using dinosaurs, one of my favourite archetypes.
Picked it as my spirit companion in some ages old YGO GX game just because he is cute.
Feeling very vindicated right now.
Evolution at its best form
So a modern Rex Raptor would be trying to kill babies in the pursuit of victory
Kinda fits. He did some messed up stuff, especially during the Orichalcos arc.
Babycerasaurus wasn't bad. It was just ahead for it's time🦖
Magic has cat ovens, Yugioh has baby dino murder, i wonder if there's any gruesome engine like this in Pokemon.
Night march? You played 4 copies of a stage 1 pokemon with none of its pre-evo, it was literally there just to put it in your graveyard
I wonder how many babies have been popped ever since the dinos structure was released...
In the words of FarfaYGO
"Pop dababy, lesgooo."
Baby had to wait til it was 11, and not a baby anymore to be useful
It was playable, because at the time this card released yugioh was much slower and we only had things like raigeki breaker, raigeki etc. The game was just slower. The card was just a little monster to get popped by a destruction effect. Only after dinosmasher fury it was a fast card for combos instead of a destruction effect victim of your opponent
I imagine someone combo-ing and when they pop this monster say out loud “kill the baby”
Just in time for those sexy secret rares
My favorite modern deck of all time
Pope Dababey
I do like when archetypes who focus around unique things that are simaler to what their based around with the Dino’s dog eat dog world mentality
i mean pop da cherr- oh no i mean make a baby- oh no i mean pop da baby
And let's not forget about Archosaur, or hybrid builds like Scraps
i bought this deck in 2006 still have it

Idea for an “older version” retrain:
_Eldercerasaurus_
Level 4
Dinosaur/Effect
_While you control this face-up card, Face-up Level 3 or lower Dinosaur monsters you control cannot be targeted for attacks while you control this face-up card, and also, Your opponent cannot target cards in Spell/Trap zones directly behind this card. If this card attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage. If this card was summoned by the effects of “Babycerasaurus” or “Eldercerasaurus”, it gains the following effect while on the field:_
_⚫️If this card destroyed by battle or card effect: Special summon 1 Level 4 or Lower Dinosaur monster from your hand, deck or GY._
ATK/2000 DEF/2000
There, it’s twice the level and has 4X the ATK and DEF, it has defensively minded effects like you would expect from a Triceratops-sorta Dinosaur (protecting your lower level Dinosaurs from battle, and protecting your backrow 1 spell/trap zone at a time), AND, if it was summoned by one of it’s kin, it gains a similar effect to Baby. Oh, and I put in Piercing battle damage because of the long, “piercing” horns the grownup Baby would have.
The correct templating for the S/T effect would be "Your opponent cannot target Spell/Trap cards you control in the same column as this card."
It seems useless to summon though, can only be used with baby or pteradon, just cut the niche middle man in the first place
@@Deathmare235
Ok, so maybe something like…
_Eldercerasaurus_
Level 4
Dinosaur/Effect
_While you control this face-up card, other Level 4 or lower Dinosaur monsters you control cannot be targeted for attacks while you control this face-up card, and also, Your opponent cannot target Spell/Trap cards you control in the same column as this card. If a Dinosaur monster you control attacks a Defense Position monster, inflict piercing battle damage.
THERE, made the attack protections apply to level 4 or lower instead of just 3 (Which could allow this card to protect itself should you control multiple face-up instances of it), fixed up the spell/trap zone protections, and made the piercing battle damage apply to ALL Dinosaur monsters you control…
The idea is that, if you summon it with the effects of a Baby or Elder, you can summon another of the 2, and that you could potentially get a loop going of this card summoning others of itself over and over whenever they’re destroyed… And that’s not even getting into how that effect is ALSO an improved version of baby’s (Same Level 4 or less stipulation, but NOW it can also summon from the hand or GY). And all without an OPT of any kind.
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire shouldn’t it be lv4 or higher monsters I mean who’s really protecting archosaurs also s/t protection is dumb when dinos don’t really set s/t also remove the if this card is special summoned by baby or this, make it so it always has its floating effect or it’s just too much
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire if you’re summoning a monster from the hand then you’re really down bad, gy is decent but you’d 99% of the time would rather Ss from deck
*somewhere back in 2006*
Tomato: Ha, you are such a bad card no one plays you at all
Baby: And you will become so bad no one will even remember you exist
THE BABY
Me only just realising how good this deck is when I bought it 5 years ago 😅
Cards like this are why we have HOPT effects nowadays. If Dinosaur ever becomes a big meta deck again, this might catch an errata.

I’m surprised this honestly isn’t a baby turtle instead of a baby dinosaur

There's even those new synchro dinosaurs or are they still ocg ?
Skull servant
I just realized something: the current Dino engine destroys your cards because they are dinos eating other dinos, hence the deck revolves around Babycerasaurus because, as a baby, it is an easy prey for carnivores such as Soul Eating Oviraptor.
"POP DA BABY"
in 2006 it doesnt have any good targets and being destroyed by card effects was kinda special condition
Babycerasaurus is the best
When the joke takes 11 years to play out
