I got into Sleep Token when sundown was the only full length album and it was Dark Signs that made me realise just how big they were going to be. It highlighted not only their creativity and genre bending, but that they had a sound that was relevant, modern, alternative yet accessible to a main stream audience as well as the metal crowd. I knew them they were gonna blow up eventually.

As a musician it’s hard to find a band and lyricist that just doesn’t miss for me. Sleep Token is one of them though. Great reaction again guys, always looking forward to the next one.
It's so interesting to hear people's reactions to Vessel's lyrics! I've spent a lot of time with poetry (and poets), both reading and writing it. There's some out-there stuff in the Norwegian canon. Like Tor Ulven, that dude's got some really obscure poems, and he's hailed as a genius. Song lyrics and poems are two sides of the same coin to me, and working with the art myself... I don't know, I don't personally think it's *that* difficult to find new ways of expressing old emotions and ideas; that's kind of our jobs as poets and lyricists. If we can't do that, then we've at least partly failed. (IMO!) So listening to Sleep Token, my mind isn't blown away, I'm more like "yes, finally something *decent!"* It tickles the poetry part of my brain, which is nice :)

Best lyricist is such a lofty title, and I love that you are both willing yet hesitant to bestow it onto Vessel. It's no small matter, but I am also tempted to agree that he just may be the best. I know that a healthy dose of bias comes with this as lyricists from generations past or genres unfamiliar may not hit for me like Vessel does. All the same, I can't remember ever being emotionally manipulated and thrust into turmoil the way Vessel does. I want to say Third Eye Blind is a close second, but honestly they've never had me up until 5am bawling my eyes out like Sleep Token does...

Whoa, I love your discovery story; mine was similar. Nazareth showed up on my Discover Weekly playlist years ago while I was working. I obsessively listened to that one track on repeat for hours before listening to their EPs. Sundowning wasn't out yet and I should have started following them (you're smart), but I didn't and so missed that whole album coming out for months. I heard it for the first time a couple weeks after the death of a loved one in 2020; Levitate was devastating and exactly what I needed. Holds a special place in my heart, too.

I put Vessel in the lyrical genre of those like, MJK and MOST of the old 90's vocalists. He brings back a story telling in music that just does not exist, in too many modern songs, in my opinion. Sleep Token are so good at creating an atmosphere. I sometimes use their music as sort of a prayer aid. I was listening to this the other day, thinking about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and bawling my eyes out. Sometimes it's about the vibe of the music. I think the reason we all resonate with this music is because you can hear the hearts and souls of the people who made it. Vessel is one of those once in a generation vocalist/songwriter that we are truly blessed to have.

What I really like about Sleep Token is their ability to blend different styles and genres. It could easily sound disjointed / fragmented but they always find a way to make it work - plus the lyrics are just beautiful. Great song!

Sundowning is such a raw album. The term is usually applied to folks with dementia or Alzheimer’s, where a sort of phenomena happens where they essentially lose themself as the sun sets. So tracks like levitate and Take Aim hit so hard, like he’s begging for a lost lover to return. The guy is a amazing writer. Thanks for the reaction guys, excited to see more from y’all
Yeah after doing a research on the term since I didn't knew it when I found this album, I remember those two songs particularly made me cry even harder(they get me extremely emotional by default). But knowing the meaning of the word and relating it to the lyrics of tons of songs in the album(the night does not belong to God as well)... Just wow. Shivers and tears of raw emotion. Vessel truly created something special

Something a lot of the fandom agrees on is that if you listen to several songs, it’s not only clear through the whole discography Vessel has dealt with mental health and such, but also a traumatic event. A lot of us, myself included, hear that he had a partner that was pregnant and for one reason or another, she lost it and then hurt herself (or even in opposite order). Because several songs like this, Atlantic, Are You Really Okay, and a few others can be taken as self harm and child-loss or both. So it’s something I’d recommend some revisiting to see if you hear it too. Because it hurts even more. Lol 🖤 Worship

His lyrics are beautifully tragic. This song reminds me of a gospel song, with the fills and how it slowly climbs to a crescendo. Listening to the lyrics it's like you can almost tell that this is some deep trauma, be it physical with an actual accident of some kind, or emotional that he has suffered is very apparent. I'm just so glad he has blessed the world with his beautiful music and voice. He's practically the best poet/lyricist I've ever heard. He always leaves you wanting more❤ Worship is exactly what he deserves😊

I was lucky enough to go see Sleep Token in Dallas a few weeks ago, but it was a four hour drive to get there. So naturally I decided to listen to all their albums straight through on the way up. You can definitely hear an evolution in their sound, but it's still the same band at the heart of it. It's still Vessel working through his shit, and you can hear the evolution of that as well through the albums. Sundowning is more ambient and slowish music (with the exception of a few songs) and it's lovely; This Place Will Become Your Tomb is the closest Sleep Token ever goes to mainstream but they do it in a totally Sleep Token way and it REALLY works with the theme of the album (you'll see when you get there); and Take Me Back To Eden is where they sort of perfected their sound and it went from heartbreak to rebirth and becoming someone new. And for what it's worth, Sundowning was probably my favorite to listen to while driving on the highway. It was very peaceful and serene and made me feel a lot more comfortable about a drive I had been TERRIFIED of making. Sleep Token is just great in general though. Congrats if you read my whole comment! Y'all are great and my friend and I get excited and geek out over your ST reactions whenever they drop ☺

Make sure you also check out the EPs that came out before Sundowning. I know you already did When the Bough Breaks, but there are some other gems in there. Jaws, Calcutta, Nazareth... The production is so much better now, but the raw talent was definitely there.

Make sure you also check out the EPs that came out before Sundowning. I know you already did When the Bough Breaks, but there are some other gems in there. Jaws, Calcutta, Nazareth... The production is so much better now, but the raw talent was definitely there.
