    Toyota alternators [ speaking from mine site experience ], take a 5 litre pump bottle, spray water through the alternator while running, will often clear the mud out and make things happen again. We have them as part of our remote travel gear.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good advice, Darren (the guy who knew a thing or two about a thing or two) does carry a similar bottle (Mechanic by trade). In this case, the Alternator had sucked up some serious mud included twigs, grass and weed. It was gunna take more than just a simple rinse. Thanks for the tip. I guess the bottle would have other uses...fire ext etc.

      It's not what you think, there are "chicken tracks" at each bad section and if you really hate mud then there is always an option. You are never obligated to go down the trenches, some so deep that the only way to get out of your vehicle, if stopped at the bottom, is via the window.

    • @johnstaring3210
      @johnstaring3210 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difficulty with a bike is that in the narrower sections of track you are not able to ride the centre mound (due to growth), meaning that whichever side you do chose you will have either the hand brake lever snagging bushes or the clutch lever. Did the Gunbarrell in 1974 and this was a huge issue.

    Great trip on the Holland Track , lots of deep muddy water etc where even the chicken tracks are hard . I don't understand why some of the Toyota drivers didn't get the sealed alternator because the standard alternator is very prone to failure in muddy water crossings if they were going to do the track . It’s a cool track and I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I didn’t do any driving (a first for me). I found the vegetation and terrain very much like what we have in the Murray Sunset NP in north western Vic which makes sense because this vegetation type apparently used to stretch almost all the way across the continent from what I understand!

That way, if the car falls off the jack it might save you from getting squashed and will make easier to get the car jacked up again.

    Was out on the Holland Track in the same weekend and saw those Toyota's with alternator issues being towed out. We were a group of 3 vehicles and only one had issues when it ran out of ground clearance in a "trench". I last traversed the track 12 years ago and am disappointed at the state of it now. Very few of the people going out there are there for the historical significance, it now being a 4WD playground for the majority. On return home the next day saw my 200 series up on stands, all wheels off, and much water applied to remove what you referred to as "cement", even the disc rotors were filled inside, and on the way home the mud had to be removed from the wheels as it was causing massive imbalance on ther highway.

      Hi John, I did the Track 10 years ago on a motorbike and i can remember some BIG holes even back then. I guess its our version of the Old Telegraph Track leading up to Cape York. Some drivers (fools?) want to challenge themselves and their vehicles and take on some of the obstacles with a 'all or nothin' approach. Obviously, it can have some very negative (and expensive) consequences. Thanks for watching.

I know a few serious 4WDers who carry a spare with them. If I am towing my trailer outback I will throw in a spare alternator for my Land Rover. I was intrigued that you had taken the rear seat out of your Hilux, obviously to give you more cargo space. Does it affect the licensing, Rego or insurance of the Ute. We have a Hilux, same model and have just finished 9K km camping trip (tent) around QLD and NSW, space and easy access to both cab and tub were an issue. Removing the seats will solve some of those issues, did the cab get noisier with the seats gone. We live in NZ our Ute is in Albury NSW and love touring around Australia and plan on doing more. 4 wheel drivers take note, mount all your recovery gear in place on the front bull bar or whatever before you go, makes all that attaching hassle easier. While I'm not anti 4WD along that track it is disappointing seeing all the damage down by clowns in cars who think digging huge trenches is hilarious. I'm doing it on my bike next week, I'll try not to drown myself.....

      The Track on a bike can be hard going depending how you're set up (ask me how i know). Lots of slappy sticks and some patches of (not so deep) sand. Enjoy your journey. Look out for crazy 4WDers

      freedom loving nation ? clearly you are not talking about Australia, there is no freedom in Australia, it left about 40 years ago and getting worse everyday.

      This is Gold…I never saw this coming. Clearly the Channel doesn’t meet your expectations or standards. Good on you for taking a stance and having the courage to unsubscribe. That takes a lot of guts and determination. Good luck in your search for seeking out entertainment that meets your intellect. 😀😘

      You do realise this is not an airport, so you don't have to announce your departure? No idea how you came to the conclusion he is a bogan, he stayed on the designated tracks and was careful and considered in his driving style so he didn't cause any damage. How on earth does that warrant your little outburst?

    Why do 4wd manufacturers build engines with alternators at the lowest point? 😱🙈🥊🥊🙏🦘

      Probably wont fit anywhere else in the engine bay. Gotta be driven by a belt. Apparently sealed units are available for that Model (now i know why).
