  • I was tempted to a junket with the promise of food and castles and games, and I got to interview the head creator of a new game. Can you spot the typo in the end captions?

    Thrones of Britannia is of course not a history lesson, but a game. However, it is good to see that the creators have clothed the soldiers in period-appropriate clothing, and created the various factions that players can lead by basing them on feasible historical counterparts, albeit with a bit of massaging for the sake of game balance.

      I wish the developers spend less money on the marketing and more fixing the game. I bet that background canvas costs one day of bug fixing. And who know how much work went to that Three kindoms trailer. And then on the launch day the game will be unplayable again and that will hurt their reputation and it wont sell well and then they will put more money in marketing so that more people would know their game and buy it and that is again time and money not spent on the actual product. Just make a damn good game and we will market it for you for free.
      That banquet with game testing in an actual castle was nice idea tough. Very nice touch.

    I'm not saying flaming arrows are legit, but in at least later TW games they are worse than normal arrows for doing damage, but can be used to set fires and do hurt morale more than regular ones. So, meh. They're fine by me.

    • @josephrobinson6171
      @josephrobinson6171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I recently got ToB and noticed they can make horses panic too, but they have a slower reload rate and less damage.

    • @Mahfireballs
      @Mahfireballs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well flaming arrows aren't legit at least not as they are depicted (beside of course the fact that the fire is pulled out of there arse and can be switched on the move on command on a moment notice) But they weren't used in battle in the past beside maybe in sieges, as if you want your arrow still to be flaming or even be hot when it lands. It require a total redesign from the arrow which makes it way more expensive and more impractical in so many ways. With as only advantage the possibility to maybe light something on fire and well ever tried to light something on fire outside with just a ember to start and well not attendance in contrary people who would see it would do nothing or douse it. The only place this might have any advantage worth considering is in a siege with the possibility to start a city (or well castle,...)fire as that could get out of control which is of course in the attackers advantage mostly in taking the settlement on in the price of victory concerning the newly conquered real estate. And well cities and place where people would live would have some potential flammable materials thatch roofing comes to mind or just dry wood used for all the buildings in general.
      But if you are interested in some good points watch Lindybeige video about it or well there might be some scientific research available online. In any case the point I actually wanted to make that in Rome I (and the tw titles onwards) you already have flaming arrows and they would also lower morale of the targeted unit(s) more so then normal arrows. Beside they were also less accurate and might be fired slower I don't recall beside these things are true for Rome I and MedII for the games onwards most still apply. In Rome I and MedII fire arrows also said to do more damage but I don't know whether that is true in any case in reality they would almost always miss. more with flaming arrow that even if every flaming arrow did more dmg enabling flaming arrow would always decrease the actual dmg delivered because of more misses. So the only reason to ever really use it was to push wavering enemies over the edge to breaking just that extra oomph and well for theatrical reasons of course.
      Beside flaming can light buildings on fire in several of the later tw I think or maybe only raider units which threw torches I don't recall but you couldn't do that in Rome I and MedII (beside I never played Med I and Shogun I so I don't know about those games but I'm fairly sure you couldn't either) but you could with artillery level buildings or even start fires. And unlike all games after MedII that dmg would actually directly reflect on the campaign as well. As if you damaged the archery the archery building would be damaged accordingly whereas even if Atilla which together with Thrones of Britannia have some of the best sieges (actually (even arguably) the best after MedII) where you could burn almost the entirely of the city which would have consequences on the battlefield and where siege evolution was actually implemented quite well. (kinda like we dreamed after seeing the siege of Cartage Rome II pre-release footage. XD and even better is some ways). Afterwards the dmg would just be spread out over the entire (4 or 6) buildings in the settlement.
      The loss in connection between battle map and campaign map is really what’s holding the newer games back from being so great as the mostly feel so shallow in comparison to those older titles and less historically or well mostly logical. Despite all their improvements in other places and I don't only mean graphics, but that disconnection and the loss of "sympathising" with your characters and how all seemed natural even though it was probably done simple the outcome would still feel more alive as it was kinda randomised but you saw where it come from or what the "odds where". And of course the incredible dumping down of the strategy aspect (from which the pinnacle is Thrones of Britannia) just limiting you options
      In any case after going on a long rant about fire arrows an then about why the older total war titles still rival and surpass the newer titles to this day (18.04.2020) on this year old comment.
      It way to long and un important (as well the probable readership is really small) for me to all reread and make sensible and correct in spelling and grammar so people who come this far (or just read the end) Have a nice day.

    Probably the one note I'd make is about cavalry - going by medieval 2 anyway. Sending your cavalry in as light infantry is really dumb. They are fast, and they have a charge bonus with good reach. So what they're really good at is getting around the flanks, then hitting units in the rear hard, and then running away to prepare the next charge.
    There are two reasons not to just let them stand around and hack. One is that you lose their two main assets - speed and charge bonus. Kinda dumb.
    But perhaps as important: if the enemy squad starts to panic, they will decide they're surrounded and figure they might as well try to hack themselves out of it. No no no. Leave them alone, let them run away like a good sport.
    Then send your cavalry after them. We shall not allow you to complete your French approach!

    Whenever you issue a command, a rider detaches from your general to go to the unit you want to command, and they don't react until the rider arrives. What will they do when they have no command? How fast and accurately will they react? Depends on the individual unit's discipline and the skill of their commander.

Your videos are a huge source of inspiration and reference for my work and I can tell you that because of them I do my best to work in historical accuracy where I can. Because of your channel I know how gambesons, and cuirasses and pennacular broaches work! And I can make them look a bit more authentic in our game. Our game does lean more on the fantasy rather than realistic medieval side so some outfits and weapons are more realistic and others.....not so much. But I just wanted you to know that someone in games pays attention to details that they learn about from your videos!

    To be honest, the best cavalry gameplay I have ever experienced was in the sadly forgotted but rather fantastic RTS, Battle for Middle Earth. The original, not the second. Like in Total War, units are controlled in units of 5 or hordes of 10, and archers or pikemen can be phalanxed with infantry. Cavalry can charge through enemy formations, knocking enemy units over and dealing damage while taking some damage in return. Pikemen inflict heavy damage and when placed in their braced formation, do severe damage to cavalry while resisting knockdown. Therefore pike-archer phalanxes could cooperatively resist cavalry attack from the front.
    Nothing very fancy about it, the game as a whole was abandoned by EA but remains one of the fondest games to my memory. The batallion mechanics were fantastic, with elite batallions being able to recoup lost units, and orcs being able to cannabalise other friendly orcs for experience. Also very nice faction-based hero units and special abilities based on the LotR saga. Natural counter-tactics like using Gandalf to kill Nazgul and support infantry with AoE attacks, Theoden to active a Glorious Charge which granted a short buff to nearby cavalry allow them to charge enemy units with increased damage and survivability, Gollum or the Hobbits as scouts with natural stealth or Elven Cloaking, using the Eye of Sauron to reveal them, using Lurtz to pin enemy heroes for assassinations.
    Those mechanics lead to a rich community custom map scene with 'Hero Arena' type scenarios where individual heroes were chosen to fight waves of increasingly deadly attackers, and Circus Maximus maps, which were fought in a large central arena with each player controlling an isolated base where the position of a few 'controller' units were basically used as control panels to select what units would spawn in the centre.
    Ahh, I miss that game.

    As someone who has played a fair number of Total War games, I can attest that they allow for a more realistic representation of cavalry than the one described in the video. It's entirely possible to have them do a cycle of charge, kill enemies, withdraw, regroup, charge again, rinse and repeat until enemy breaks. It's just that you, the player, need to make them do so by giving the orders to withdraw, followed by a new order to charge. Also, since the game simulates every soldier individually, some of your guys might not be able to ride out of the enemy formation on the withdrawal, but instead end up left behind and overwhelmed by the enemy infantry.

    For the best game-depiction of the berserker phenomena, I nominate the Close Combat series - a squad-based WWII game featuring a platoon scaled, bird’s eye view of the battlefield.
    Like the Total War series, morale was a key factor in Close Combat. When it flagged, due to stress and fatigue, soldiers tended to either route, or else curl up in a fetal position for the remainder of battle - but every once in a blue moon someone went berserk with a distinctively furious, mind-snapping howl and charged headlong at the enemy. This had the effect of rallying demoralized friends and panicking previously aggressive enemies and, while the soldier turned berserker often did not survive such recklessness, the ripple effect of his heroics was often enough to salvage an otherwise hopeless situation and save the day.
    The key factors are 1.) - there are no berserker troop types; it can happen to anyone, and 2.) it happens only under extreme duress and then, very rarely.

    • @kingdomofthesaintful

      Kingdom of the Saints I was puzzeled by how the arrow stayed alight in its flight to the funeral boat and then when it got the boat. I was under the impression (and still am) that it would be very hard to burn the boat with an arrow. It just didn't seem a very reliable way.

    • @kingdomofthesaintful
      @kingdomofthesaintful 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Longer, heavier arrow with a lot of metalwork on the tip, maybe a lower poundage bow than a warbow, shooting at a relatively immobile target on a windless day, shooting at a target which was made purposefully flammable. Pretty feasible. Can't say if it's historical though. It doesn't need to be effective at damaging the object either because it'll just stick to the wood and burn away, and the only way it can be snuffed out is if the recently deceased king suddenly springs back to life on his funeral boat and decides he has a will to remain un-carbonized.

    Generally the Total War games are pretty good at keeping mostly historically accurate, while also changing things up to make it more entertaining. The cavalry coming to a stop and fighting is unfortunate, but generally you don't want to keep them engage, you want to do what's called, cycle charging. So you charge in, get that big hit with the charge bonus, then run back out, and slam in again, and repeat. Cavalry get a huge bonus on a charge, and it does a ton of damage to morale, so having infantry hold them in place while the cav cycle charge them in the rear will very quickly break all but the most elite infantry.

    The "Dark" Ages were so named because we had very few historical information that survived from those times, as compared to other ages, like classical or even antiquity. So the name is not in reference to a lack of civilization, but rather to an obscure/unknown period in terms of historic accounts. This is also the times when the church was deliverately keeping people in the dark and purging all knowledge that survived from the Roman empire. They hoarded ancient texts and destroyed those which they found heretic. Thanks a lot, Christian church...

    yes unfortunately i think you have gotten to the point where you critiquing and knowledge has overtaken your ability to enjoy such things. Obviously you will never have a battle simulator such as this being even 70% accurate because that would take VASTS amount of computing power plus real battles would simply be too boring.

    • @nicholas1888
      @nicholas1888 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wouldn't actually be much of a stress on computing power considering today's technology and if you take a look at Mount and Blade Bannerlord, it actually has cavalry charging through and knocking over infantry. We're already progressing to a point in which we have to consider the reality in which super intelligent AI take over our world and kill us all, in all honesty making a game that is realistic isn't that hard - I just don't think they really want to do it. Most studios don't want to take that leap of faith, they'd rather just make an average / okay experience that guarantees they'll make a profit as opposed to taking genuine risks.
      Realism also isn't really that boring, we think it is because it sounds like a lot of work and complexity scares us but it's not when you do it right. A sword swing is always going to be very simple when it comes down to the execution, you just have a choice as to whether it's a realistic swing or unrealistic one.

    • @BH-rx3ue
      @BH-rx3ue 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      its different with TW because M&B only has a few hundred entities with rather poor graphics. TW can have thousands of units. I never said realism is boring, if TW was 100% accurate in regards to how everything actually worked (except for the running away because a lot of battles in that era wouldnt have ended in everyone being wiped out ALL of the time) then it would be fantastic. i wish it were like that where you could zoom in and you could see people actually properly fighting exactly how they would have fought with a more diverse range of tactics (like the old roman switcheroo) but
      1) peoples computers aint as powerful as what one would hope for
      2) the more in the game, the more likely it is to go wrong in the coding (which is the great thing about the steam workshop as others can edit it with fresh eyes and make really nice improvements)
      3) time spent making the game is limited by their funding unless
      4) the game becomes massively expensive
      what my point about the battles being "too boring" is back to the "everyone will kind of jab at everyone else from a distance and then about 80% of the people would run away" aspect. they have to make it fast paced otherwise a lot of the people this game is aimed at will lose interest

    • @nicholas1888
      @nicholas1888 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realism isn't always about copying aspects about the real world, sometimes it means embracing the fantasy, but it mostly revolves around an attention to detail similar to that of anything that is real. It means at least to me, that you are attempting to create a world and not a game, that you go into a level of detail that is enough to create the illusion that the game is real. You can have a game about dragons, elves and magic that is realistic to the rules of that world, the point is you create expectations and reality, but then you uphold them. You focus in on the tiniest aspects and ensure that everything has a reason for existing. It can be difficult to understand for some people, but these guys are supposed to be industry veterans, they spend their whole lives doing this one thing and for them, creating satisfying cavalry shouldn't be this difficult.
      Humans do really incredible stuff every day, the fact that most people in the games industry seem to uphold this belief that they are limited in what they can accomplish is an insult to that. Find some evidence to prove that they can't do better, that they in fact set out to make the best game they possibly could. When you do that, I will be open to believing in the idea that they didn't settle.

    • @BH-rx3ue
      @BH-rx3ue 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i understand the principle you are talking about and i agree, that should be the aim BUT again, you have to remember they are still driven by money and they need to hit a wide target audience to get all that money and if they make the game increeeeeeeedibly detailed in even the smallest of aspects, it will require too much power for the general computer to handle. Yeah it would be great for people like ourselves who presumably have more powerful PCs than most but they still have to think about the money. Everyone wants games to be tailored to them but sadly the reality is, games industry cannot do that, not just yet. I mean my ideal game would allow me to slip on a helmet and be in a fully immersive game where i can actually fight other people in the ages of swords and shields and spears and so forth and actually *FEEL* the enemy block my weapon and so forth but there is a limit.

    • @nicholas1888

    Also the way the guy on the left is smiling the whole time i get the feeling there was some heated internal debate of some things and lead pulled rank probably telling everyone they were wrong and knew nothing. Guy on left then gets to arrange this event and called in this lindybeige person to "advertise" while covertly wanting him to call BS on leads decisions.

Not many people are interested or even aware in more specialized games outside of cult classics like Fallout 1 and STALKER.

      They made Age of Charlemagne a DLC for Attila and it sold pretty well so I guess they figured AoC should have been a standalone and now they made this one that way

    • @NMahon
      @NMahon 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it's not full price, it's like 40 quid or something, so in a way it's like halfway between a full game and a dlc?

      Thrones of Britannia is a standalone game, based on the Attila engine, yet with countless changes

      $40 is the 2018s full price. No one pays more than that. Maybe if you really wanted to play far cry 5, but that guy is a sucker for more than one reason

    11:46 holy cow. Behind Jingles is a 2 dollar Halloween costume helmet from last year. Don't try wearing it, it's plastic and incredibly brittle. Mine broke in half the first time I went to put it on!

      Nothing unmodded from those hallowed halls are realistic. But they're 'realistic' enough...

      I'm not talking about Warhammer, obviously. I've been playing the game since Medieval 1 and, though it's true that the game was never perfect and the realism decreased since Rome II (I actually regret paying for that game), is there anything better, out there? Is there even something similar? If you know of any game that is more realistic than Total War, I would really appreciate you telling me.

      Gosling Can you name some mods that improve on realism, please?

    This game wasnt really that good when it released, but now, after a lot of fixes, its actually quite good! I recommend it to everyone that takes interest in the era it represents.

      Looks like CA are roping in ALL strategy game related video producers .. and boy, looks like they all sold out $$$$$$, Hope someone does a comparison of M&B : VC and this. And yes, Bannerlords will wipe the floor with anything CA or anyone else can produce. .. waiting .... waiting ... getting old .. still waiting ..

      Han Lockhart be kind, he's not into video games. I'm sure he was excited to be invited, and he had more to say about the architecture than the game.. that said. I would love to hear Lloyd tear into all the things the game gets so horribly wrong. Starting with fire arrows. ;)

      M&B is not comparable to this game. They belong to a completely different genre of games. It's like saying Battlefield 3 is better than Wargame: Red Dragon.

    It takes a particular upper tier nerd to appreciate the total war series. When one does however, you may get small glimpses of real historic battle tactics. They are my favorite and i own the entire collection. If i were king i would commission "The Wheel of Time , Total War."

    All this is just a way for them to cater to people like you so you spread the word, please don't be fooled, this company is total bollocks. They've been scraping together the exact same game over and over again under a different coat of paint every couple of years for their last 5 installments. Their whole company philosophy revolves around tricking their audience to buy into the newer titles so they can sell them the dlc package of unlocking the blood and what ever while the consumer is "hyped" hoping the additions would actually make the game into what they were led to believe it would be.
    They never innovate or fix anything, the game is a scam. They don't actually work on it, they spend all their money filming videos of themselves pretending to work on it and put them on youtube, I'm not joking. Bunch of jack asses the whole lot. I really hate these guys and I'm very concerned that they will keep this attitude until we stop talking about it and the children of tomorrow will get pulled into this trap.

      they do the same in games like far cry too. reskin and make new maps. And everyone is aware of what they are buying else it would not been successful. try to make a game yourself and you would notice that bugs cant be gone just cause you snap your fingers.

      Yet thousands of people buy there games and enjoy them for 100’s of hours. Call of Duty is the same price and it has a 6 hour campaign and almost exactly the same multiplayer every year.
      If you don’t like Total War, don’t buy it.
