I think the supply system that this game has really makes it interesting compared to other TW titles. I've been re-enjoying it recently and it does have some great atmosphere. The graphics are (as Alex have pointed out) really gorgeous!
First of all, I think TOB has some of the best, most interesting and fun to play settlement designs. I think they are severely underrated. Unfortunately this is held back by the fact that the AI is irreparably stupid. They literally just run at you. It makes for painfully repetitive battles. A positive here is that the actual animations, and unit interactions when in combat feel very good, and strikes a nice balance between having defined lines of battle, and areas or times where it can get a little brawly makes the combat at least visually, pretty entertaining. I remember me and my friend doing a co op campaign and I was spectating his siege defense, and towards the end when he routed the enemy, one of his longbows died from the walls and struck one of the fleeing guys in the neck, and the animation and sound was *chefs kiss*. However I have had only one memorable battle in this game and it was because I somehow took my 450 units and defeated an army of nearly 2000. I basically used the Roman technique of rotatating my infantry line to keep them fresh, while my archers slowly picked away at their back line and I calvary sniper their general. It wasn't even the hardest battle I've had in total war, but that's the only memorable one in TOB sadly. Idk why we cant have a game with the settlements of TOB, the battles of shogun 2 and medieval 2, and the politics (with some work) of Rome 2.
ToB was pretty great, but it suffered badly from folks not recognizing that it was a Saga title and not a full release. It used innovative mechanics, had great sieges, and allowed the Welsh to kick out the heathen Germans and Norse and reunite the Romano-British people under a latter-day Arthur. It also didn't offer all that much replayability due to the close focus on a small geographic area with limited factions. The end-game crisis of a random invasion was pretty solid, too. It shared a lot of good features with Attila, actually, and suffered in some similar ways to bad hype and lack of further support. I'd rank it as my fourth favorite TW game, after Attila, Medieval 2, and Barbarian Invasion, and actually ahead of the Warhammer games (which are probably the most replayable, but aren't actually the best experience).
I like thrones and have well over 100 hours, but i only actually played in 2020 well after i bought the game as when i bought it it's features were confusing and new to me. So in essence i bought it, hated it, didn't play, played, then loved it. One thing i will say is that it can get monotonous as much of the factions have the exact same playstyle(shield wall and two or three archer units with maybe one or two cav), save when norse factions occasionally have long axes. The sieges are super easy and can be cheesed as you can simply have a unit break through a gate on the opposite side of the settlement of where your main army is, and have them walk to and take the town square. It's a beautiful and fun game with huge potential and gives an in depth look into the early middle ages and especially the history of the british isles, but unfortunately it's potential will probably never be fulfilled due to CA's policies and the way they make their games Edit: I also love how archers were given a bit of a boost with the ability to do critical damage; i felt like they were actually powerful and loved archers in this game. I do wish they had normal sized archer units tho another edit: I genuinely love thrones and think it's design and general style is the direction total war should be going in. Bigger maps, realism, etc. And there were huge quality of life improvements. The one part i don't like is that there wasn't more unit variety (don't get me wrong there was alot but i wish there was more) and that it felt repetitive.
I have had fun with this game to be fair. Mostly Irish ancestry so I like playing the Mide campaign every now and then. Only completed 1 campaign though and that was an Irish/Welsh co-op
One of the biggest gripes for this game is the lack of garrisons for minor settlements. Personally, I rather like the change because it forces you to build small, highly mobile armies as a support system to your full-stack field armies. While your Field Army slowly bounces from strongpoint to strongpoint, your mobile forces harass the enemy countryside or defend your borders. It makes you plan your next moves and try to anticipate what the AI is cooking up.
@@TheRealBrotherLance I think it’s sad how many people miss the good this game does for the franchise via actually having distinct lands that you need to mange differently as opposed to the same generic „min max“ towns. This is an interesting period to me, so it was a shame to hear that people didn't think it wasn't up to snuff when it came out. It's good to see that it isn't that bad, at least now.
Id LOVE to watch you do a campaign series on this. Maybe with one of the mods that lets you play as any of the factions so you could start as someone really small for maximum difficulty.
Thanks for checking back up on this game! I was curious to see how it was nowadays. Especially as it's on sale pretty often these days. Wouldn't mind seeing more on it.
I have always been a huge fan of history in general and total war games, but the last 5 years I have become obessed with only the Eurasian area. Seleucid Empire is my current love. Anyway I am just a bit burned out on English History, because I have heard it so many times. For any English history lovers, please do check out the history of kingdoms/empires/caliphates along the silk road. So much cool stuff went on here throughout history.
the series peaked with Medieval 2 for me, never been able to get into another one since even though I buy them all, always seem to go back to the Medieval 2
One thing I find interesting was Med 2 was the last title the Australian Sega studio helped out on. From what I read and the people that I spoke to a lot of the best mechanics from those earlier total war games were suggested by or developed by that Australian studio. Unfortunately Sega killed off that studio shortly after Medieval 2 and it definitely feels like the UK studio has bled all their good talent out over the years.
i love Medieval 2 (HRE and Byzantium player :] ) though Byzantium does lack unique units (i know Stainless Steel exist and 1212 mod, but i'm so confused on how do i even get it to run, and 1212 takes place in 1212, not 1080, but i'm still very interested in it)
When it comes to Total War it really is a shame that their fantasy game titles are just so much better than the historical titles. Even myself I would say that Warhammer 2 is my favourite Total War at the moment, even though I would like to say titles such as Rome (1 & 2) and Three Kingdoms are just as good. It would be cool to see Alex evaluate the Total Wars into a tier list and get some more in depth thoughts on the positives and negatives of all the titles throughout their years of release. Video idea possibly?
I find your knowledge of this game’s era fascinating! As someone who has only studied tactics and equipment from the two World Wars, I hardly know anything about medieval Britain… or medieval anywhere, for that matter. I’d love to see you create more videos that contain information about warfare and politics from around this game’s time period; especially since it seems like you really enjoy discussing it. :D
My total war ranking :) 1. Medieval 2 2. Attila 3. Empire 4. Rome 2 5. Napoleon 6. Troy 7. Shogun 2 Ive also played a bit of thrones and 3 kingdoms but never really got into them. I havent played the others.
I play Thrones mainly as the Welsh. My favorite Total War game is Empire Total War. When I am bored of playing other games my fall back has always been Total War Games. I do not like West Seax, nice roster but the Welsh Longbows, Cav and Spears are the best.
Actually Thrones of Britannia is really good ever since they fixed the issues and provided decent updates. It has a very good rpg system (whatever you do affects the skills of your generals and politician, it has the BEST audio features in the entire franchise: The chants of the soldiers, the audio of marching soldiers, the epic soundtrack that gives you the feeling that it is a life or death battle..etc To be fair thrones of britannia could have become the jewel of the franchise like 3K but unfortunately the developers decided to not include various missing core features in my opinion.. No forced marches, no ambushes, no intricate trading system, spy network, assassination, political intrigue...etc On the other hand like I mentionned, I see myself re-installing this game every now and then just to re-experience the EPIC battles with fantastic immersive audio and feeling. Lastly there are three excellent mods that will completely change the game for the better: 1) 1066 you can play as the Norman Duke William and invade England have a great battle against Harold Godwinson. 2) Second mod is called Shieldwall. It absolutely changes the entire game making it far more immersive, realistic and improves various features. 3) Radious mod: Fantastic overhaul mod like Shieldwall but different, just check it out. Thrones of Britannia gets a 7.5/10 for me
I loved Viking Invasion for the OG Medieval Total War and the Britain campaign in Medieval 2 Kingdoms, but this just feels so empty compared to Total War Warhammer 2. I was a total "History gud, Fantasy bad" guy when Warhammer dropped, but have done a complete 180. This just can't compete. Nice to see Total War thrown (ha) into the mix on the channel, keep up the great work Alex!
Love ToB and I think your video echos my thoughts. I've had some epic AI seiges but then some meh ones as well. But as you rightly point out this is more of a total war issue than a ToB issue. Top work my friend.
the grand campaigns are fun but 90% of the factions start with 20% of the map so its kinda crappy for someone like me who enjoys building up a weak faction to the strongest
Thrones is probably my favourite of all the Total Wars, I'm not really sure why all the hate? Maybe people from outside the UK aren't interested in the setting?
What have they changed/added in the last couple of years. I thought it was pretty much abandoned. Last and only DLC was 3 years ago. Last patch was nearly 3 years ago...I see now its on sale on Steam 75% off.
My [personal] advice to enjoy this game is to avoid campaign and play custom battle (it has my best personal favorite custom battle systems). and also I've tried playing the campaign and it gets so boring. I never play that mode.
I'm not sure if i'm bias because I love the time period but I loved the game. The only issue was the way the last enemy general of a faction would ignore you besieging his capital to take a minor settlement of yours.
By now the answer is very simple, CA will never make anything remotely good anymore, but the modders are the ones who can make their games actually challenging, complex and interesting. I have no intention in getting back to any vanilla CA game, but i've been enjoying Dei, Darthmod, 1212 and now Shieldwall immensely. There's an infinity of content actually
Just bought this as it was on sale on HB. Pleasantly surprised with it. It didn't really interest me off the rip and I heard some of the issues that were plaguing the game so I kind of forgot about it honestly. I own every TW game and this was the only one I was holding out on. Glad I finally got around to it. I like the food/economy system in this iteration a lot. Unit comp is average but the gameplay is pretty fun and the sieges are excellent! I will say though that I'm not a huge fan of the settlement system mostly as there are no garrisons in minor settlements. This makes it really annoying to fully eradicate someone as many times I've been chasing just a general around my land as he occupies the smaller settlements. Kind of tedious but it is what it is.

No forced marches, no ambushes, no intricate trading system, spy network, assassination, political intrigue...etc
On the other hand like I mentionned, I see myself re-installing this game every now and then just to re-experience the EPIC battles with fantastic immersive audio and feeling.
Lastly there are three excellent mods that will completely change the game for the better:
1) 1066 you can play as the Norman Duke William and invade England have a great battle against Harold Godwinson.
2) Second mod is called Shieldwall. It absolutely changes the entire game making it far more immersive, realistic and improves various features.
3) Radious mod: Fantastic overhaul mod like Shieldwall but different, just check it out.
Thrones of Britannia gets a 7.5/10 for me
4:43 You need to stay Stronk Alex!
I love the siege maps. Some of the best imo
These sorts of videos are cool. Showing off older games people, like myself, may have skipped
Try this with the Bran Campaign AI mod and it is a freaking brutal and bloody experience!
Love ToB and I think your video echos my thoughts. I've had some epic AI seiges but then some meh ones as well. But as you rightly point out this is more of a total war issue than a ToB issue. Top work my friend.
Great video
Such a shame this video didn't do so well, it's nice to see you play total war as well as HoI.
the grand campaigns are fun but 90% of the factions start with 20% of the map so its kinda crappy for someone like me who enjoys building up a weak faction to the strongest
Thrones is probably my favourite of all the Total Wars, I'm not really sure why all the hate?
Maybe people from outside the UK aren't interested in the setting?
You should definitely try and do a series on Thrones of Britainia
What re enactment group were you with? I'm a new member of Regia Anglorum :D
What have they changed/added in the last couple of years. I thought it was pretty much abandoned. Last and only DLC was 3 years ago. Last patch was nearly 3 years ago...I see now its on sale on Steam 75% off.
You are teeling me that this game is 4 years old!!! I my god time really pass by!!
Engagement for the rambler
well played with the *would you engage* I cannot leave that unanswered
Maybe
Yes do a campaign alex
My [personal] advice to enjoy this game is to avoid campaign and play custom battle (it has my best personal favorite custom battle systems).
and also I've tried playing the campaign and it gets so boring. I never play that mode.
getting a tw game for only custom battles? the campaign is still fun espeically if you like to time period.
The character portraits look like the chad in the VvC memes
5:38 it's pronounced chester lmaooooo, not hate, love your content man
Should do a series for this total war
What issues are you having with your PC? I can suggest things.
I'm not sure if i'm bias because I love the time period but I loved the game. The only issue was the way the last enemy general of a faction would ignore you besieging his capital to take a minor settlement of yours.
Favorite Total War: Rome 2
Would I engage with this man: Yes....yes I would
“When I used to do Anglo-Saxon reenactment” hello
Any total war you play is my favourite! :P I still love napoleon. But three kingdoms kinda stole my heart
favourite total war has to be total war warhammer 2 young me would dream about a game like that but would be blown away by it all now its crazy
I'm a simple man I see Alex uploading total war I upvote
I love this game! Shieldwall and 1066 mods are good fun.
10:55 the fact that you went back and double checked gets this video a like.
Super underrated
Try out the radious mod on this game Alex, could make it much better for you.
Also we gotta see some pictures of re-enactment alex!
Any game you can play as the Welsh is brill.
I loved it as it has my hometown of Northampton in
I noticed its only a few dollars and I was wondering if it was worth it on sale
I love it with the shield wall mod, that’s it tho
The chad Goatee looks good
By now the answer is very simple, CA will never make anything remotely good anymore, but the modders are the ones who can make their games actually challenging, complex and interesting.
Honestly love the battles in this, shield walls for days. The naval battles are extremely hard.
Yes I would engage with this man.
Try going into your nvidia settings and go to program settings and put your power settings to performance.
