Honestly he put some scenes that were not necessarily romantic or paired with Alain. The same could have be done with Virginia, Rosalinde, Eltolinde and some others and the length size would increase significantly.
Unfortunately, I had to keep some scenes in for some continuity. Although, I disagree with this being done with others. They don't really have any romantic scenes or relationship scenes beyond one or two scenes + the recruitment scene. For the biggest direct example, Rosalinde would have her 2 brief flirting moments, and her intro.

Eltolinde and Rosalinde have the scene when they gave Alain the Ring of the Maiden for example, which later on will have its continuity when engaging in romance. Eltolinde also has that moment when Alcina is trying to possess her body. She was pretty much trying to use Eltolinde's body as a vessel to be with Alain when Gerard's soul takes his body. That moment can also be applied to Yahna. Yahna and Alain's relationship is a parallel to Gerard/Alcina's relationship. All the moments with Alcina and her flashbacks can be applied to Yahna's romance as well.
So, to clarify a bit, I meant that you could not do a lengthy amount of romance scenes ,like Scarlett, with most of the other 50+ characters in the game. Sure you can add like 3-10 minutes of fluff scenes, but Scarlett has two regions. Alcina's total scenes are around 5 minutes long. Sure you can add Alcina to Yahna's romance, but its still about 1 scene with 2 context scenes. I don't really get what Alcina has to do with Eltolinde's romance and scenes, beyond introducing Eltolinde in the first scene. The maiden ring explanation scene is 3 minutes long(less for Eltolinde), while Rosalinda's extra scene at the altar is 2 minutes long. Those two scenes are what I meant by Rosalinde's flirting scenes as one changes based on rapport level. Its more of, you won't be able to do a hour long video with anyone else even if you included every non-romantic scene kind of thing.
The scenes don't necessarily need to be related to romance. It is all about continuity as you said. Half of those scenes with Scarlett aren't romantic but since she has a lot of scenes you can add so the viewer can see the big picture of the romance. The same could be applied with other characters. Some like Eltolinde, Rosalinde, Virginia, etc have many scenes that add up a lot to the main romance route. PLEASE DON'T GOO!!"* I knew Scarlett was the Developer Desired Date of Unicorn Overlord (She's not the only one, Rosalinde & Melisandre got *heavy* shipping focus too), but I never thought it was *THIS DEEP!* An *hour* long? No wonder GreyCaliber held this video for last. The ship tease is sprinkled even to Albion? That'll be interesting to see once I get there. Still like Scarlett personally. Love how she's got a double wholesomeness factor to her from being a childhood friend & holy woman combo, but she's blessed with eternal stiff shoulders for being a bakery. And the fact that she's the only healer in the game that's the personification of "I'm a [Priestess], but..."
For real, the man is literally proposing to her and she still can't drop the playing hard to get act. Scarlett, the elf sisters sitting on your strong shoulders are not real, they can't hurt you!

Is it just me, or someone here in the comments are probably too harsh on Scarlett? She may not a perfect childhood friend and Priestess, especially to go back in a Palevia after the story. But as long as she doesn't wanted being abandoned by Alain, she has plenty time of how becoming a true humanity, right? I still believe in her, no bias haters allowed here to reply.
I think the main problem is the cliche of the childhood friend, there are so many histories of the protagonism falling in love with his/her friend, and because of that when we can choose, we discart that option because the cliche. I like Scarlett but she doesn't impress me like Yunifi, Rosalinde or Melissandre. But that's my case

To me scarlett was a guide and had an important role in her own country so yeeting her out there for the sake of romance is kinda bad for me especially the only option they had back there in albion was an unstable brat who will most likely decive devouts. (out of all the stupidest recruitment in this game that had no consequences that had to be the worst)
My Two Cents: Scarlett makes sense as the "Canon" romance entirely due to narrative and story demands. Her character also works for it far better than the others. A criticism of some of the English dialogue for the game is the Robin Hood Men in Tights style of speech Alain uses in the game with several of the potential romances. Scarlet's romance lacks this trait. The Norbelle events if you refuse to save her, apart from punishing you for trying to pull a George R. R. Martin or a Marion Zimmer Bradley (Who is burning in hell as we speak), also make clear the consequences of refusing this. Ultimately, Unicorn Overlord is a story for epic fantasy and the Scarlett romance just feels right due solely to the nature of the story being told, with both Alain and Scarlett's characters fitting nicely into said story. Chloe and Melisandre feel like the Developer's wish fulfillment choices, several of the others feel like obvious fetish bait, while others feel like the sort of player wish fulfillment scenarios one wants after reading a couple of Manga.
I still believe that Celeste is also an excellent choice for a True Ending Alain, specifically because of the flowery fairy tale speech, and the fact that he needs to be merciful in this kind of playthrough, and she befriends the people he had spared in the past. It's the kind of link to the narrative that I enjoy and makes me think they both share the same values. Some people consider her to be fetish bait, but that's not all there is to her

Same here. And honestly I feel that's pretty typical of most "main girls" across many RPGs. Her big thing is that she's the sweet childhood friend and that's it. Also doesn't help that she pulls the whole "I won't lose to the other girls' attitude that many girls of her archetype have, which I'm not a fan of but Japan seems to love.

I wouldn't say Scarlett is generic, just that while I was playing the game she felt the most..."Obvious" for who they wanted you to give the ring to. Scarlett is very bold and headstrong for your archetypal priestess character, Sharon being way more "Generic". She has a very kind heart, and she's inspired to be stronger by those around her. My entire playthrough, knowing Unicorn Overlord's inspirations, I kept having to tell myself "Sorry Scarlett, you aren't gonna be the first one" consciously, because of the alarming amount of screentime she got.
Best Girl for me is a toss up between Scarlett and Chloe. Both give Alain different things that he needs on an emotional level. Now if only they had the guts to also make Lex a romance option to round out the Childhood Friend options.

They don’t have a queen, they’re a theocracy so she would have been a Pontifex but I’m guessing the death of her father in that position was more painful than she even admitted. Even then some people don’t like to be in charge of others and she may just be that kind of person.
Acts heartbroken when rejected but (initially) pretend she is being the convenient option if chosen. At least Melisandre is consistent. I still kinda like her and respect (lol) VANILLAware's decision to make her "canon" though.
Honestly, Scarlett isn’t even vanilla. She’s no more sweet than any other woman in the army and most of her scenes are tinted with jealousy or Alain just not showing any signs of reciprocation. I feel the revelation that her father told her to keep an eye on Alain does more harm than good. It makes their entire relationship feel less organic and more of an obligation. Really puts that “making a convenient choice” comment in the ring ceremony in a new context too. No offense to any Scarlett fans, but this romance is a mess.
This is an interesting take, to be sure, but I don't think Scarlett knew Alain was the chosen one, just like Alain didn't know Scarlett was basically the next pope. I suppose you could also look at it like a political marriage, but one that blossoms into genuine love. Just my thoughts.

To be fair, it depends on the context and how the characters are portrayed. Imagine the flak male Scarlett would get if he used the same words that female Scarlett did. Princess "I would like you to have the Ring of the Unicorn." Dismissive Male Scarlet - "You just choosing me because I'm a convenient option?" The main girl is practically offering you the ring, and your first reaction is to snub her? After she has been loyal despite the many, many, many options she has had to choose? And the first thing you do is doubt her sincerity and feelings? While some would argue the whole NTR thing, others would also argue that the 'male' is being a twat about the whole thing. Had Scarlett said something akin to: "Me? Of all the amazing women we've met, you would chose me, over them? This isn't a joke, right?" I think it would have helped her position so much better.
To all of you who hate Scarlet, just play the games and choose other LI, and see what become of her.... Of all Alain's queen candidate whom not chosen, Scarlet is the only one who never moved on. After the story, she relinquish her pontifex title, leaving everything behind and retreat herself to Palevia cathedral. But the saddest thing is, the poor girl still preach about how amazing Alain was until the rest of her life.
I chose Virginia at first, but backed out after seeing the unique skills of the rings and chose Scarlett instead since I had her and Alain in the same team. Felt a bit like a cuck watching the Gilbert Virginia post credit, but it's good to know I avoided Scarlett sad and lonely fate, she's still my second favorite after all.
Wait... that means she just can't move on and almost borderline obsessed with Alain? They don’t have a queen, they’re a theocracy so she would have been a Pontifex but I’m guessing the death of her father in that position was more painful than she even admitted. Even then some people don’t like to be in charge of others and she may just be that kind of person.

Honestly, Scarlett isn’t even vanilla. She’s no more sweet than any other woman in the army and most of her scenes are tinted with jealousy or Alain just not showing any signs of reciprocation.
I feel the revelation that her father told her to keep an eye on Alain does more harm than good. It makes their entire relationship feel less organic and more of an obligation. Really puts that “making a convenient choice” comment in the ring ceremony in a new context too.
No offense to any Scarlett fans, but this romance is a mess.
This is an interesting take, to be sure, but I don't think Scarlett knew Alain was the chosen one, just like Alain didn't know Scarlett was basically the next pope. I suppose you could also look at it like a political marriage, but one that blossoms into genuine love. Just my thoughts.

To be fair, it depends on the context and how the characters are portrayed. Imagine the flak male Scarlett would get if he used the same words that female Scarlett did.

The main girl is practically offering you the ring, and your first reaction is to snub her? After she has been loyal despite the many, many, many options she has had to choose? And the first thing you do is doubt her sincerity and feelings?
While some would argue the whole NTR thing, others would also argue that the 'male' is being a twat about the whole thing.
Had Scarlett said something akin to: "Me? Of all the amazing women we've met, you would chose me, over them? This isn't a joke, right?" I think it would have helped her position so much better.

Of all Alain's queen candidate whom not chosen, Scarlet is the only one who never moved on. After the story, she relinquish her pontifex title, leaving everything behind and retreat herself to Palevia cathedral. But the saddest thing is, the poor girl still preach about how amazing Alain was until the rest of her life.

I chose Virginia at first, but backed out after seeing the unique skills of the rings and chose Scarlett instead since I had her and Alain in the same team. Felt a bit like a cuck watching the Gilbert Virginia post credit, but it's good to know I avoided Scarlett sad and lonely fate, she's still my second favorite after all.
Wait... that means she just can't move on and almost borderline obsessed with Alain? Man that fucked up and make me want to romance her less, it's as if we're being told we're jerks because we don't follow dev's wish to the tee (I mean come on we still saved her it's not like we abandoned her to do fuckall let her down Norbelle bodysnatching route). Story is already UO's weakest aspect they don't need to hamstring it more.
I will romance her eventually because she's actually sweet despite the blatant canon pushing and favoritism that made me raises my eyebrows.
