    Command and Control Official Trailer 1 (2016) - Documentary
    A chilling, Dr. Strangelovian nightmare plays out at a Titan II missile complex in Arkansas in September, 1980. A deadly accident - the result of a falling socket puncturing the fuel tank of an intercontinental ballistic missile carrying the most powerful nuclear warhead ever built by the United States - leads Air Force personnel, weapon designers, and first responders to work feverishly to prevent a calamitous explosion. Directed by Robert Kenner (Food, Inc.) and based on the critically-acclaimed book by Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), COMMAND AND CONTROL is a minute-by-minute account of this long-hidden story - much of it based on recently declassified documents that expose other freak accidents and near-misses. How do you manage weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them?

    Some time after this Titan II missile exploded, my father, brother and I snuck onto this nuclear missile silo complex 374-7 and went down into the ground where the command center was. As a young teenager, this was quite the experience I'll never forget.

      I don't think it was over a radio. I read a story about this accident and the young man who dies, SRA Livingston was moaning this on the ground. One of his squadron members went over to hold onto him to let him know that he wasn't alone. The member states that he knew that SRA Livingston's condition was such that he knew he was not going to make it.

    It was a disturbing documentary to watch, the way the government treated the personnel involved in preventing a tragedy even worse is criminal. So, Nuke Warheads do not go off on their own, but in this case a single switch that prevented the reaction after hitting the ground avoided a nuclear explosion?.

      Dean we still have hundreds of nukes across the world that can fall into the wrong hands or accidentally detonate.
      It's incredibly dumb to live in a world with nuclear weapons... the fact that there are humans that think their an acceptable idea, means we're in bad shape for continued survival.

  • @bruce92106
    @bruce92106 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Personally? I actually don't think there was much danger for the nuke warhead exploding. They only go off by a certain chain of codes commands and then a series of mechanical events that happen within the warhead itself. A good example of the safety mechanisms within to watch Buzz One Four Impact Documentary is a 2017 documentary about a B-52 bomber that crashed on Big Savage Mountain in Maryland in 1964 while carrying two thermonuclear bombs. The documentary tells the story of the crash, the rescue and recovery of the crew, and the impact it had on their lives. It also includes the story of local citizens who became first responders and almost died trying to help. In short the warheads never detonated as neither did this event in 1980. It's an interesting documentary but the way it's promoted has people thinking whoa did some nuke explode back in 1980? Oh well that's Hollywood.

    Wait, so damage to the outer part of a rocket will somehow make the rest of the missile detonate? I would hope the design of these nuclear missiles aren't that bad...

      Captain Crypto Show Well, it didn’t explode after the fuel blew up.
      But the thing is, no one feels like pressing their luck too much with nuclear weapons...reasonably so.

      You're right, atomic bombs have a lot of in-built safeguards to prevent this scenario. Also, to initiate the blast, a lot of mechanisms have to work perfectly in the bomb, so if something goes wrong, there's a really REALLY high chance that the bomb will never go off due to that malfunction. I don't know anything about this incident, but i think that the missile's fuel exploded due to some kind of accident, and the plutonium in the warhead was sprayed in every direction by the blast, like a really big 'dirty bomb'.

    • @jonesfowler1887
      @jonesfowler1887 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're right the nuclear warhead did not detonate but it's not really a place that you want a massive jet fuel fire to explode. this was closer to annihilation than i bet the fed even revealed for this film. imagine a quarter of Arkansas looking like Hirshima.

    • @billykramer7525
      @billykramer7525 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Except if you read the book, you'll see that the military contractors and documents conclusively show that the warhead could have gone off accidentally. They wouldn't have written a book and made a movie about this incident if no danger was ever present. It was just concealed from the public for decades.

    • @jonesfowler1887
      @jonesfowler1887 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      aaronsdavis they are designed to not go off under many known conditions excluding a massive jet fuel fire as here or a plane crash like in Goldsboro. like Rumsfeld said there are indeed known unknowns. second yes all machines can and ultimately do fail.

    • @Brokenrocktail

      They already had PAL systems in place by the 1980s. These systems required an arming key to decode the cryptographically secure, tamper resistant firing sequence generator to fire the dozen or so explosive lenses in the precise sequence required to achieve a super-critical of the physics package and nuclear detonation. The systems were purposely designed to be asymmetric as to prevent an even simultaneous detonation of the explosive lenses from leading to a critical mass and chain reaction. Miss the timing on even one of the dozen lenses by ~20 nanoseconds and the bomb fizzles or fails to go nuclear at all.
      It would still be a large scale nuclear disaster however, as nuclear particles and fission products (in the case of a fizzle) would be spread over potentially dozens if not hundreds of miles depending on atmospheric conditions. As far as the idea of a full-scale nuclear detonation occurring from a fire, or even deliberate "hotwiring" of the weapon, it is practically impossible. You would have a better chance of winning the lottery while being struck by lightning.

    • @cybercat1531
      @cybercat1531 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. For an explosive failure you require a fully armed and ready to go nuke that is just seconds away from reaching it's target. No sane engineer would build a system that allows arming of the multiple nuclear warheads ontop of a modern ballistic missile before launch. That occurs automatically in flight shortly before reaching the target and makes use of numerous failsafes to allow it to happen only minutes before reaching its target.

    • @Agiantpansy
      @Agiantpansy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah there's no way a fire or an accident could detonate all of the explosives surrounding the nuclear core simultaneously, without that implosion the fissile material isn't compressed and can not go supercritical.
      They also make a lot of other ridiculous and sensational claims in this, a politician in little rock told a story of how he received the news and informed the guests at his dinner party that if the nuke where to detonate Little Rock Arkansas would be instantly vaporized. The missile silo was 47 miles Little Rock, that's well beyond the blast radius of this bomb. They would be at risk of radiation fallout, and possible spread of fire, but are no where near close enough to be incinerated or suffer blast damage to buildings. This is a politician saying this, so I can forgive his ignorance on the subject, but the Filmmakers make no effort to correct the record on this. There's a lot of this blatant lies, exaggerations, and fear mongering in this documentary, can not recommend.

    • @Agiantpansy
      @Agiantpansy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see you went with your gut reaction of avoiding researching the topic yourself. This is a really simple matter you know, if you did even a few minutes of research on the subject you would find out you are wrong, and so laughably so it's as if you where insisting the moon where made of cheese. (please don't start arguing the moon IS made of cheese, I fear that is something you are likely to believe in wholeheartedly)
      >"I want you to tell that to the people who were injured and the one person who died!"
      Sure thing buckaroo, you get on arranging that meet up. They will almost certainly agree with me, given that they witnessed first hand a fire and explosion which didn't cause a nuclear detonation. If they disagree with me, it doesn't matter either, because science > feelings and ignorance.
      If you make a coherent argument based on facts I will likely respond to your next post, but if instead it's as brainless as your previous ones I will simply ignore it in the same manner you ignored high school.

      Lost Luna dude, watch the documentary. The guy won a award for his research for his book on it. It's endlessly footnoted. Everything is explained in the doc.
      There are failsafes and there are safety mechanisms. All of those things are prone to human error. That's the entire point. It just takes one failure to doom us.
      But seriously, watch the doc everyone before you play armchair scientist.

    • @Agiantpansy
      @Agiantpansy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake Bjornstad First of all, that's an appeal to authority fallacy, which is silly as the author is no more a expert on the subject than I or any other "armchair scientist" as you put it. the author has a history degree (which coincidently I do as well) in British imperial history, which involves absolutely nothing on nuclear weapons. All of his training is just self taught "armchair scientist" as you put it.
      second, I watched the documentary, that's why I have specific criticisms of it. Which award are you refering to? He was nominated for a Pulitzer but did not win, the Pulitzer committee have zero background in nuclear weapons, so there nod hardly is significant confirmation on the scientific veracity of his claims.
      Rather than hurling fallacies and ad hominem at me, why don't you find a reputable source that claims a uncontrolled explosion is likely to detonate a nuclear bomb. it doesn't take much "armchair sciemtist" research to realize how implausible this claim of the author is.

    The US should change the warheads site to Washington, below the White house and the capitol.
    If something happens, the people to blame will be reiponsiblised.
