  • Taking a grill from a 48 Buick and bumper from a 51 Oldsmobile and cutting it up to fit on the front of the Chopped 49 Chevy Fleetline. Its all in the little details that make it work

My mind = 🤯 Working with parts where there are potentially very difficult to find if something get messed up is nothing for Tony. I would’ve had an anxiety filled fit and probably would’ve walked away. Outstanding work Tony! You never cease to impress

Wow! Your experience is really coming out in this video. You are definitely a master of metal. It would be a shame if this bumper didn't get chromed but I understand why it wouldn't. Great job Fritzee and thank you so much for showing us your process, it's such a cool process to see how you take your imagination to real metal finish work. There is a lot of work there that you do that we don't see but we all know what you were doing. Amazing work!!!!!

Love the process of how you work things out. Having chromed wrapped my 2000 Honda Insight, wrapping the bumper is a viable option and the new chrome paint systems are very good, maybe you can get a sponsor from them. My suggestion for the grill would be lose the last tooth on the ends and come up vertical from the edge of the lower bumper detail, ditching that swoop around and fill in below the headlights like a "55 Chevy.

Your right about the cost of chrome now. It is very expensive. BTW, If you cut the diecast you cannot aluminum weld it, if you want to chrome it. I found out the hard way. You need to have the diecast coppered then you can solder it together sand then buff and re copper before you nickel-plated then chrome. Try just paint (chrome color) or color match the car.
What your doing is increadable nice work.

Your best work and creative eye to date, magnifico! I just finish a bike that had a lot of chrome the expense and time line was prohibitive. I choose chrome powder coat. Turned out great! 95% the look of chrome just a tinge bit less glossy, also on the satin side (might go with the paint scheme). Did all the pieces on the bike for $250 US. The chrome quote I got from Pittsburg was $2,000 and 6 weeks, You can see the bike on my channel CR Nuts Motorsports.

Wow. What you can do! I think if it was me I would change the front sheet metal below the front of the hood so the top of the grill set back up under the front under under the hood. Maybe as much as 1.5 inches. So you could say the grill was frenched in up under the front. The the grill wouldn't set out so far in front of lower hood area. The grill would be welded to the front sheet metal. That would tuck the entire grill and bumper into the front of the car more. But the way it is is fine too.

That was a lot of work figuring out how the front should look. One thing with those chrome parts, they were chromed correctly. The way chrome is done correctly is first copper plating, then nickel plating then chrome plating. Often these days, they just chrome plate the steel, so after a few years, the chrome goes rusty. They made things to last back then, now everything is throw away and often not repairable.

Basically, Tony's condensed probably a decades' worth of 'little mags' 'how to' articles into one episode. I knew several years ago, when I first came across this channel that if anyone could simply show me, simply, how those masters of metal craftsmanship achieved what they did 'back in the day', Fitzee was to be that man. He's fulfilled that quest many times over in the intervening years and in this single episode, I believe, he's earnt his status of honour, along side those masters from the '20's-'60s, who transformed the mundane into visual and tactile wonders of automotive sensuality. The very top, of top quality craftsmanship and tutorage, Sir. Sir, very-very, well done. Thank you.

I hear you, on the cost of chroming... I have a place, within 20 miles of me... They have a relatively poor reputation, and charge an arm and a leg. I spoke with a fella who had the chrome replated, for his Classic Truck... It looked kinda "Meh" (you could see sanding marks, and lots of swirls) and it cost him over $10,000... He was "Pissed".
They want $2000 each, to do my Nova bumpers, and I can buy new ones, for about $500 each... I have no idea how they stay in business. Anyway, I'm going to do Matte Black bumpers, for the time being... $1000 + shipping, would go a long ways towards other things of higher importance, on my build...
I Love the way you designed the front end, bumper/grille
    set-up.
Keep up the Awesome Work. ❤❤❤

I am disgusted with many of today's chrome plating companies, big and small. I know that since the late 80's, sending a bumper out to be rechromed, the chroming facility gives full attention to the exterior and nothing on the back side. If the back side is rusted, that is what you get back. Why? I was told it is due to labor costs. Please tell me how when all the rust is removed from acid dipping does the back of the bumper come out looking so badly. I doubt that all the rust is removed and each successive dipping just makes the bare metal rust more. They believe quality is superficial only. If you see it, fix it. I do not work like this as it goes against how I was brought up - do your best. If anyone else feels the same way for what it costs nowadays, we are in tune. BTW, stay away from any Bumper Boys bumpers. They are sent to Mexico for rechroming and my best friend purchased a pair of bumpers for his 64 Corvette and they were full of belt sander marks that were not sanded out. Lots of money for garbage. I used to work in the chrome dept. at Harley in York before they used only parts that came in chromed from vendors. Harley used what was called appliance chrome. It was prepared bare steel that was plated with nickel for 30 minutes, rinsed clean in several baths and solution then chrome plated for less than 4 minutes. It was then rinsed and put on the bikes. Many do not understand that triple chrome plating first applies copper to aid in smoothing the surface. Today there is duplex chrome with is actually done with a dull nickle for filling minor scratches and bright nickel (99% pure) then chromed. The chrome is very, very thin. The shine comes from the bright nickel. Chrome can be a serious health issue and the vats of chrome are not disposed of but set aside to literally eat up any contaminants, filtered and put back in service with the addition of more chrome. It can cause cancer. A guy at Harley fell into the chrome vat while servicing it before I worked there and he died a few days later due to his skin coming off. That was hushed. I would paint the car the 1953 Oldsmobile dark blue. Olds painted the hardtops this color and with a white top, not suggesting the white top. Olds was ahead of the times in 1953. The car is looking fantastic. Great work.

No matter what the project is, it's always interesting and informative even if it's something I ll never do because parts of the video can be transfered to something similar. A couple of weeks ago I saw a video of a guy down in the states. It caught my eye because of the car the was being rebuilt. I watched a couple of episode's and the project was looking real good but something was not right. Every little piece that wasn't perfect was replaced with a new replacement panel. There were a bunch of every tool you could think of. The shop was huge and spotless but therewas no challenge and instead of how you explain everything, he was telling how good it was goingto look. You style is real and your the man!

Hey Tony, I was at the local lumber yard a couple days ago with my 64 F100. They were really amazed at such a nice survivor!😊 Problem is I've got hundreds of hours to make it look that way. My front bumper was from a newer model and was to wide and didn't fit the "chin" piece that fills the gap between the grill and bumper. I narrowed it 1 1/2" on each side and welded 3/4" wide 1/8" bar stock to the top edge and scribed and ground it to get the proper reveal / overlap to the filler. Looks factory!😊 All the work I did to make it look like I didn't touch it is like peeing yourself in a blue suit. It gives you a warm feeling but nobody notices!!😅 Thank for the great tips!
