Mick don't be reluctant to give your opinion on which power amp or gear you prefer. The whole reason I watch TPS is that you both do have opinions. I value your description of what you are hearing live. There is no way to evaluate something sonically when you are listening via the Internet on an iPad even with good headphones. Just too many steps in the chain. I have bought pedals based on your reviews and haven't been wrong yet. So far, I trust your opinions. So describe what you hear and make a judgement call. Other reviewers don't do this. They A/B some gear and say, "what do you think" without expressing an opinion or at least describing what they are hearing. WTF! Great show, inspired me to try my effects loop. Cheers from California.
+19MarkZ thanks 19, I guess we're just being careful as all the sounds are valid and we all hear things so differently. We try to present things in a consistent environment so it gives you at least an indication of what was going on in the room. We do give our opinion but Mick and I are more interested in this process being a conversation with you as opposed to a one way opinion based platform. We love our valve amps and classic guitars, but minds are open to other things too :)
@@ThatPedalShow similar sort of question, I know I'm late to the party though... I have a line 6 helix, I down sized from a stupidly heavy 100 watt Blackstar and pedalboard but I miss the valve tone... Would I be better getting a valve preamp such as the V4 Kraken and a solid-state power amp such as the Palmer or use the inbuilt preamps and get something like the power station?
I have been playing for years with little to no knowledge of pedals and what they can add. Your show is an amazing learning tool for me!! Thanks for the show!
Only halfway through but I can say that this is already one of my favorites. This is the type of video that keeps me coming back. I love this level of exploration and it's just fun to see the possibilities. You gentlemen, are "ace".
TPS is like Christmas; you wake up eager to see what's under the tree, and then after the show is over, you get all sad that you have to wait a long time before it comes again.
Not only are you guys doing cooler pedal stuff each video, all this time you're spending together has made your comedy chops really up their game. I was laughing through the whole video! Keep up the good work guys.
12:20 good point brought up here. This demo is basically treating the pedal board as an amp section, switching between the amp options. So when you place the OCD before the amp, just like you would normally place an overdrive pedal into your normal amplifier, it gives such sick sweet tones, better than just the OCD or Constable on its own.
I had a bit of a revelation with this subject recently, where I placed this fuzz that I really liked BEFORE my Tone City Model M (Marshall Amp style pedal), and it breathed like a gnarly dragon 🐉 after this 🔥 - I’ve basically found my magic config I’ve been chasing for a few years now, really like a dream come true playing these past few days...
Definitely agree with the 'recorded sound' description from a modeler. That's the charm/benefit for me recording directly at home and also why I'll always prefer to use a 'real' amp with the band.
Every time I refer back to any of TPS episodes with a Kingsley pedal running into a power amp, I reconfirm my decision on waiting for my Kingsley pedals and new amp on a pedalboard setup (SD Power Stage 200)
After having put together 15 pedal boards with different pedal board power amps myself I have grown quite fond of the Moorer Baby Bomb 30. Simple, small, Bright Switch, and LOUD. I have 5 of them. One one of those with a 5 band EQ in front of it for the tone stack and whatever else other drive and modulation pedals before it yields some very great tones.
Also, I love that you guys are doing more straight to desk stuff. In my regular gig we do everything straight into the house (currently using the emulated out of a blackstar amp) and seeing more options as far as direct in is super helpful.
At work! Going to not do my usual thing and try and sneak in watching it in between emails etc! Gonna save this for post band practice tonight with a couple of colds beers! :-) Might wear my D&M Drive T-shirt while stroking my D&M drive pedal too.......Or maybe not...we'll see! :-)
Not for me these sounds.... however, i'm moving house and found a Yamaha THR10 in an empty room with a wooden floor and natural room reverb.. cranked is awesome!!... best transistor sound I've heard.. Back to The Hammy soon. Love the show.
I've been using a Bogner Blue as my preamp for a few years now. I love it. Either through a cab sim to front-of-house or through a modded Fender Excelsior-that amp has almost no preamp shaping anyway. Hell, I've even used it to record bass as a clean preamp. It's a great pedal.
Abe Ruper , i did use it that way but it did not sound that good at all comparing it when used as a normal pedal in front of an amp. So, i asked Bogner about using it as a preamp pedal and here is there answer. Hi Andre, It will not sound at it's best, like the majority of pedals it was designed to be used into the input of an amp. If you use it direct into an power amp you will loose some gain and some punch, the red pedal is better suited for that as it has much more gain. Regards, j o r g
I have a Constable V1. LOVE it. I use it to either drive 2 Atomic 112-50s, a preamp for a Digitech Cabdryvr, or a boost to 2 Princeton Reverbs/or Velocettes. Always amazing.
Just want to give a thanks for you guys for making these videos, they are awesome and informative. And because of a few videos you've done this year I have finally gone and got myself my first Compression Pedal. I have only had it a day and already don't know how I could have lived without it for my clean sounds for so long, it just balances everything out so nicely and adds that little bit of sustain that just slightly fattens my sound without losing the tele twang!! So thank you guys for just being pedal inspirations!! Oh and Dan, "668 the neighbour of the beast" good joke :)
I have been going back through all of your shows you did before I knew you existed. Have had a lot of my questions answered doing so. Now, I have another suggestion: Kingsley preamp(s) into Hiwatt; out of Hiwatt into Fryette PS2; out of PS2 into stereo effects; out of stereo effects into Fryette LX II stereo valve amp for a complete wet/dry/wet system. This combination of Fryette PS2 and Fryette LX II offers a plethora of connectivity options that solves an entire basket of headaches when dealing with Hiwatt amps that have next to no external (daisy chain) connectivity options. As far as speaker options go: Fane, EVM 12L, and JBL E120 - type speakers. I know this is not the speaker show but speaker choice seems to be at least as important as preamp choice and power-amp choice (EL34, 6L6, KT88). Note that the Fryette LX II is EL34. Surprised there is not a choice of 6L6 or KT88 for the wet stereo signal. BTW, I had the EVM 12L in my Mesa rig. I sat my 4x12 on top of my 2x12 tremo-verb (I have a huge thing for 6x12 3/4 stacks after seeing Jeff Beck use Univox 6-packs! The coolest thing ever!) Everyone uses 2x12, 4x12 and 8x12. No-one uses 6x12, and the reason for this is because of the connectivity issues/demands which Fryette cures with its combined offerings. Also, Weber will make 24 ohm speakers which also solves the 6x12 problem for those of us HIFI NUTS who want to run everything at 16 ohms. My goal is 3 6x12 3/4 stacks in wet/dry/wet (actually 9 2x12 cabs: Bottom 3 are ported with 55hz cones -ala DrZ/Genz Benz- middle 3 are closed with FanesEVM - ala Mesa-, top 3 are partial open-back with clean cones -ala Vox-. Weber makes everything (Celestion, Fane, EVM, JBL clones) in 100 watt 16ohm on demand, and all in alnico instead of ceramic (also on demand). Yeah, I know, I am a mad scientist on a mission. Not for loudness, but for high-fidelity' I listen to Pete Thorn's amps and I do not like any of them. Compression is an effect and should be used effectually. High-gain, highly compressed amps are not pretty to me. Thus the Hiwatt/Hylight/HiTone choice. There are also 2 other amps which seem very interesting to me: The Mesa Boogie Triple Crown Series (can be either EL34 or 6L6) and EVH 5150III (6L6) or EVH 5150 IIIS (EL34). I want to use both flavors. EL34 for mid saturation and 6L6/KT88 for bottom and high cleans. In essence, a 3-way 2.1 system for guitar. This brings us back to the beginning: Run the Kingsley pre-amps into the front of the Hiwatt (the Chase Bliss 'tomato' seems like another good choice for this Hiwatt application). I'm guessing the Kingsley Page clean boost pedal would sound best in this application. Create that perfect front-end sound and then send it out to the effects and stereo power amp via the Fryette combination mentioned above. Clean and simple. HIGH FIDELITY like no one else is doing! Maybe you can get Andertons to join you in this collective act of lunacy. The $15,000 wet/dry/wet rig. Remember: (to paraphrase Jimi) "Not necessarily loud, but beautiful . . ." This is what happens when I watch your show at 3am.
YES!!!!! Cant believe you guys featured the Mooer pedals, been gasing for one since they first announced!!If it's TPS approved, it's in the shopping basket!
"Feels amp like". That sums it up extremely well. I have several different amps (tube, transistor and MOS FET) and several different cabinets. Also an 11Rack. Ive found solid state amps sound just as good (overall) but "feel" different . Its very hard to explain. I am confident it is exactly what you are talking about but it probably doesn't come across on video like it does live. My solid state amps are regular PA amps that I have plugged into guitar cabinets to experiment with using different effects. With regular pedals they sound good but 2 dimensional. The 11 Rack, for some reason, makes a SS amp sound exciting and "amp like". Using MOS based amps come really close to tubes. I would be hard pressed to hear or feel the difference unless I did a side by side comparison. But of course, each amp and speaker cabinet seem to have their own identity. And from what Ive been told tubes and MOS FETs seem to react similarly and seem to interact with speakers especially at louder volumes. My one and only tube amp (Blackstar HT 40) has that amp like feel (for obvious reasons). When you have an amp or the right combination in your signal chain, it is very inspiring to say the least. Mick, i have a 1990 Strat Plus with gold LS pickups. I rarely play it and often think of selling it. Then I watch an episode and you rock yours. Maybe I need to play mine more often. Dan, Your Tele kicks ass! What a tone! Thanks for another great Saturday morning coffee hour! Now its time for yard work.... hopefully it rains and I can lock myself in the studio and play instead. : ) Sorry for the long winded post.... you have me thinking out loud. Cheers!
+Christopher Hamm All interesting stuff Christopher. Generalisations are always difficult but inevitable. To talk about solid state and valve amps as if they're homogenous things is where the problems begin. Clearly not all valve amps are the same and (Mick here) there are transistor amps I'd rather use over some valve amps. But there is no transistor or digital amp yet that comes within a mile of my favourite valve amp. I mean not even close. For me, of course, it's not universal. As you say, speakers, cabinets etc etc etc all make a huge difference. Your point about the inspiration is bang on. The reason Dan and I get on so well is that we're inspired by similar things. And in doing TPS, we're not setting out to say something is 'better' or 'worse', merely to add some opinion and examples to these old debates. We try not to fall into generalisations, but as I say, they're often somewhat inevitable! I guess what inspires you is based heavily on the things you've become familiar with over the years. Things you've gravitated towards and away from, and they're slightly different for all of us. People are often surprised when I say that I care more about amps and pedals than I do guitars, and that's because for me, all the questions have been answered about guitars. There's no more mystery there for me, it's just a matter of price! Amps is kind of the same, but I can afford a collection of the amps I want. Not so guitars. :9) It remains fascinating. I play many Strats, all the time. Never two the same! Thanks for watching!
That Pedal Show, exactly! As an example, my mom always over-cooks her vegetables. My wife under-cooks them claiming she doesn't want to cook all the vitamins out.... guess which ones I prefer.... neither, I don't like vegetables! Just kidding! I prefer moms of course. My wifes are fine but given the choice..... its what I grew up with. Personally, I'm a tech guy and just hang on every second of your show because i don't have the resources you guys are fortunate to have. I've done a ton of experimenting with my limited gear over the past 35 years and I find tones I like, tones I love and tones that make me ill. Tone is so subjective to the listener. Somedays I love my tone other days ,same set-up, not so much. Yard work is done, time for some crisp veggies and then time to hit the studio. Thanks for taking the time to reply! Keep on doing what you do.
Learned today: 1) The constable is awesome 2) The orange was great. Mick' playing was awesome in this part ... on fire! ... but that thing is too large 3) the Mooer stuff is not cutting it 4) all cabsims straight to the desk were horrible sounding. Nice episode! Preamp on the pedalboard into a valve poweramp is something I have been doing for years. Try the AMT 11a on the show please. I think it is nice.
That Pedal Show cheers guys! Always a pleasure to watch your show .... incidentally - guess what arrived today after what feels like years of planning ... my G2! Still missing a few components, but this is going to be an awesome board!
+Frank N Nice one Frank. Mick here. I'd been using G2s on the show for ages and of course Dan and I have been mates for years. BUT... I never really understood how good it was until I started using it in my own rig. And I'm not just saying that. Exceptional. Have fun!
+fossilmatic it's funny, there are times when I love the cleans from that guitar, and other times when it just doesn't work. But it can sound great clean
This was awesome! I was wondering myself if it would be worth trying the preamp pedal+poweramp way for my new and more portable rig. If I may, I would suggest a part two of this with some more high-end competition for the Con"beep" ;). For example the Seymour Duncan Palladium, the Suhr Eclipse, some Amt's stuff, Bogner's, the Theta, or other ones of your liking. ...Please :) Thank you!
I have a huge request called "Budget amp tuning" episode . There are lot of guys like me who started guitar journey with cheap equipment. As long as modyfing guitar is relatively easy, amps are something more complicated. I am user of fender 85 SS amp but i wanted to go into more valvy/ less transistory sound. I found out Tech21 and its cheap alternative Joyo American Sound (30 $) . Putting this pedal into my efects loop absolutely changed my tone. I know that analog pedal in ss amp is not exactly what gives you tube amp but in this case i felt in love with that sound.I would love to see episode in which you take just normal SS amp and try to get as much as posible from it. Of course you can always buy tube amp, but is some countries 600 $ is two mounths sallary. I know you are both professionals using profesional equipment but you impact a lot of home-amatours with rather limited budget. Thanks :)
Guys I watched second time and i have a uestion (but i also leared so new things watching it twice). What about booster ? If you wana have a clean boost to your preamp what should you use? Using booster in valve amp is perfect but in here the rule "pushing tubes" wont work. Better use e pedal or overdrive with drive 0 level full ?
I bring a JOYO American sound pedal to all my gigs as a backup. I have used it twice when my amp went kaput, and it saved my ass. For $35 it's a little marvel, and sounds great recorded direct too.
Gosh how bad did all the cabinet simulators sound? Via actual cabs though the Orange sounded great as well as the glorious constable. Mooer preamps definitely have a place and a market but not in my signal chain. And as an aside the show demonstrated how good a pedal the OCD is.
+Peter Jessop As with all direct cab simulators, you can do a great deal with EQ and additional impulse responses, certainly for recording and even live if the sound engineer has the tech. But yes, straight out they never sound very 'good'. Or at least they don't sound much like a speaker. Cheers!
That Pedal Show agreed eq and ir would help a lot but fairplay to you guys for not doing that post production so we could here what they actually sound like
yep that usually happens with "in the box" cab sims, even in amps such as the Lany IRT studio (my lovely amp) the cab sim wasnt good, fortunately it has cab sim on / off so I can use two notes Wall of Sound and then it sounds absolutely killer
That Pedal Show how about things like the two notes C.A.B. or the neunaber iconoclast, or even something like atomics amplifire?. I've heard good things about them, but I'd love to hear your take on them! Do they actually get anywhere close to sounding like a real cab?
Another great show! Seriously one of the best things about my fridays. Hey, can we get a maybe midweek episode, with each of your top 5 tones so far in the show with snippets and stuff like that. I know my top 3. Great stuff as always guys!!
+Javi C. Hello Javi. We've tried a couple of times to do midweek episodes. A shorter edit might be possible, but to be truthful we really struggle to get the shows out as it is. There has to be a way that doesn't involve me and Dan both going bankrupt! ;0)
Hah! I have a rig with a Kingsley Maiden and other things hooked into a RME with the same monitors this video is playing through as the "Power Amplifier". .. when that hum happened .. I checked all my gear. Pressed the noise gate switch .. unplugged. Thanks for fixing it Mick!
Guys- your show always brightens up my Fridays, thanks! Found this one very interesting, per usual honestly..... it re-affirmed my belief that "to me"- nothing sounds better than tubes..... it's just what sounds right to my ears. The "668" moment had me laughing aloud- much to the chagrin of those around me! Thanks for all the fun that accompanies the great education! Cheers!
Awesome stuff... Even though the subject is directed to guitar players, bass players (as myself) can learn a lot from TPS. I actually use a preamp(transistor sansamp)+poweramp(transistor StudioR) rig and it's great. Huge tone, flexibility and easy to carry around. Tube amps do have their place among bassists, but it's a compromise to carry around.
I preferred the sound of the Orange into the Palmer (I'd probably eq it differently), thought the Constable into the Fryette sounded the most amp like. The parametric mids on the Bangeetar would be great for overdubs, or playing in bands with two guitars and keys.
It's really interesting to me after Learning how to build tube amplifiers n pedals and the research I've done on those subjects. There's a phenomenon that happens in valves that can't be recreated. For whatever reason Even order Harmonics are Available in abundance inside a vacuum. Basically the electrons can really party n have fun inside a tube ( invented by john Ambrose Fleming n Nikola Tesla in 1904). Those even order harmonics are the ones most people find extra pleasing to the ears.. if it sounds best to your ears then that's it whether it's valve solid state or digital it's whatever inspires you
I use the Tech21 FlyRig 5 straight into the effects loop of an amp. Fender cleans, Plexi crunch, reverb, boost and delay...not much more I need. Great show guys!
Hey Guys, Great show as always! Dan mentioned that two of the problems running an overdrive pedal into the amp return is the lack of EQ and volume control. Couldn’t this be helped by running a clean boost and an EQ pedal like a Boss GE-7 before the overdrive? It isn’t going to have the same impact as a Maiden or Constable, but it could be a workable solution until I save up enough pennies so I can get Simon to build a proper preamp pedal for me. In the last show, the D & M didn’t seem to have any issues going into the Deluxe amp return on its own. It is hard to tell on the video, but it seemed loud enough. I would be using a Deluxe as well. Thanks a Million! Lim
+Lim Peacock it was important to us that the D&M has plenty of output, so it's there if you need it. Yes, the eq pedal is a great idea as long as when you stack that gain you have an acceptable noise floor.
seeing the THR on the shelf over there reminded me that you never really did pedals into the THR (or an equivalent modeling) amp. would love to see something on how pedals interact with modeling vs valve equivalent.
Great video guys!! I'd never actually considered a power amp with a separate preamp, but I really like the tones you get with these! Sort of related: I'd love to see you guys do a video about bass and using some of the pedals with bass, as well as amp vs separate pre and power amp like this too!!
Guys this test proves me one essential thing. If you want a good sound work on your pre amp and pedals stuff.. If you want a great sound just crank your amp.. old school, simply the best way.
+Daniele Rizzetto Entirely disagree Daniele. Sure there are truly MAGiC sounds to be had from a cranked amp. But just as many with using pedals etc. Gilmour, SRV, Hendrix, Page... need we go on? All pedals and amps!
That Pedal Show Well probably my opinion is influenced by my experience with pedals. I feel that "the sound" is a cranked amp (and the joy of master it like a pilot with his F1). Pedals and pre amp tricks can only embellish it. Or create something deeply different.. like a fuzz.. Totally personal opinion of course;)
+Daniele Rizzetto We agree on the cranked amp thing. But we'll say again, so many awesome guitar sounds in history have a pedal involved. Or at least a buffer (in the case of Angus!) It's not a polemic we'd draw to say that with or without is in any way better. Cheers!
You mentioned that modeling always sounds like a recorded guitar tone. I think that's because at least the their conception that's what they were supposed to be. The PODs were to be a way to plug straight in to a recorder and get a mic'd guitar sound without the mic. I guess the technology has never advanced to give you that "room" sound. I play at my church with in-ears and use a POD HD500X straight to the house and it sounds killer, but at home it's my pedals through my blues jr. Thanks for the vids!
+BJamin4God I think when people hear a modelled amp such as an AC30 they're used to the sound of hearing a recorded AC30 but to me it's quite different than being sat in a room with an AC30. But it absolutely does work for some people
Another great video, guys! Idea for a future episode: explaining the differences between different amplifier classes and getting to hear some examples. And, of course, if this has any difference on how the amp responds to pedals. Class A vs Class AB is still a bit fuzzy for me. Keep up the amazing work!
+Phil Heesen III We get asked this a lot Phil, trouble is there's soooooo much more to it in terms of the rest of the circuit. So people assume AC30s are class A and that's what that sound is. But they're not! Perhaps another way to do it would be to simply compare and contrast the most famous classic amps. Hmmmm. Thanks for watching!
A classic amps episode would be pretty cool. Thanks for your answer! The first thing I think when I wake up on Fridays is "ooh, it's That Pedal Show day!". Seriously, thanks so much!
The Constable through the Fryette at 48.08 just before you kicked the reverb in sounded very Deep purple Fireball No No No ish Top work again fellas If only Kingsley did a Hiwatt version I would be waving my money
Love your vids, guys! I like how in depth you get with effects & how they work differently through different amps. Much different EQ's on different amps & brands especially. Just wanted to say thanks; been here from the Gig Rig channel & learned a great deal from you two 😎
Third time watching this one - love it! I have an old Peavey Bandit - Changed the speaker and run all kinds of stuff into the effects return - cheap tone!!!! Can you guys update this video? Iridium vs V2 Constable - oh yeah - I think there is more tone for the money with the Constable, but only you guys can tell us!!! What other fun can you have stickin' stuff in the effects return?????
Ahhh, such good tones! Two questions: 1) Where would you put a valve pre like the Constable in your signal chain? Before everything else? 2) Would you ever check a valve pre when flying?
+Rob Flax Depends, but loosely speaking after your drives and before your verb and delay. Check in terms of in the hold... sure if it's packed well enough. In a pedalboard / flightcase. Maybe. More fragile things are shipped, so it's really down to how much the airline hates musicians. Most seem to. ;0)
That makes sense! So you're driving the Constable's tubes. Got it. As far as shipping/flying, I fly with my pedalboard full of stomp boxes, but none of them have valves inside. Just wondering if the valves are any more precious than the knobs on the outside, for example.
Great episode as always! Others have mentioned this, but I found the omission of one or more mid-priced pedals to be somewhat glaring. Offerings from Tech 21, AMT, and others are priced (at least in the US) fairly evenly between the Mooers and Kingsley / Orange high end options, and I think the majority of viewers would have appreciated hearing a mid priced pedal rather than 3 Mooers. Just food for thought. Keep up the terrific work!
+Slashaholic Anonymous TPS is really less about the specific gear, and more about concepts. Nevertheless there's definitely room to follow up with some Tech 21 stuff especially. AMT not very available in the U.K. as far as I'm aware. Cheers!
That Pedal Show Well at any rate, very much appreciate the incredible amount of hard work and resources TPS puts into producing such top shelf infotainment each week!
I've been running an 80s Carvin preamp into either a Hod Rod Deluxe or modeling FX and IRs depending on the size of the gig for years with great results. But I love all the newer idea pedal-sized preamps, so there's some Kingsley love headed my way, so I can stop carrying around a 2 space rack just for a preamp.
IDEA! "Stump D&M" - we submit songs with iconic guitar sounds and D&M try to recreate the sound on the spot - no pre-prep. It was inspired by INXS "Need You Tonight" and thinking "what pedals did he use?" do it do it.
I'm sure it will! As of yet I have some Kingsley pedals on order. The only question remaining is: where to go from there (Cabsim, Solid State/Tube Poweramp etc.)? Curious to hear what kind of sounds you can come up with in this video.
Koch preamp rules- check out Brett Kingman here from 10:30 on...when he hits the gain channel he exclaims- "WOW" th-cam.com/video/pABpfXLIXlI/w-d-xo.html
Hey! Would I be able to run my guitar into one of these pre-amps (I like the Orange), then from that into the front of a Peavey M-3000 power amp and from that into my speaker cab?
As if you need more scatter-brained ideas to contemplate, I wonder what it would be like to do comparisons of similar affordable 6L6 equipped amps (Mesa 5:50 Plus, Fender Twin, Blackstar, etc) and EL34 equipped (Orange, Marshall, Victory Sheriff 44, etc). Head to head with the same popular pedals in front of them. It could reveal differences in preamp design, and speakers, and how that changes the sound through otherwise similar amplification of the power sections. You guys do a great job with the array of stuff out there. Super informative format! Thank you!
Kingsley into Freyette every time for me. I've tried the mooer two rock style preamp into the fx return of my single channel valve amp, and it gives me better cleans than going straight into the amp's pre. The mooer does need a considerable amount of boost to drive the fx return though. I have a Kingsley Maiden on order, and I'm expecting great things of that, for all the reasons you've suggested when you've demonstrated Kingsley products. One thing I must say after experimenting with the mooer into the fx return, is that - in spite of using a modelling pedal in the chain - an amazing amount of valve 'feel' remains, resulting in a far more pleasurable playing experience than with a fully solid state signal path.
I just did a TH-cam video of the Kingsley Maiden D and Kingsley Page into a Mad Professor Twimble using the Fryette power station. I really liking the tones I am getting from the combination. Kingsley pedal are just on a higher level!
I recently purchased an Effectrode Blackbird tube preamp so have been wondering about this recently, great timing! Also recently had a gig in which I used the effectrode into the fx return of a hot rod Deville backline and I instantly had glorious tone
First to get it out of my system: Hotrod Deluxe/Deville was called Blues Deluxe/Deville in the ancient times. I use a section of my pb ending with a preamp before a tube amp and another pb section sans pre into a very cheap solid state amp. The mix is glorious. I think.
+Dejan_J_Trumpski The inference is that our horizons are narrowed without them? Emphatically not the case. This is a point of interest and comparison. Nothing to do with broadening horizons. Thanks for watching!
Sorry guys if you took this as a slight against you, that wasnt the intention I was just referring to the fact you are clearly covering new subject matter & including equipment you havent in any previous video to my knowledge anyhow.
+Dejan_J_Trumpski Ah, apols back. People sometimes say we can be closed minded or snobbish about gear. We're neither, but we do know what we like. Thanks for watching and commenting!
That Pedal Show no worries guys i see all the time you get posts like that off people. i know you love what you do and im sure i speak for 99.9% of guys who watch your videos when i say that we truly appreciate the video's and your knowledge you put out there. in future I will pick my words more wisely guys!
Mick, I also love the 'Here I Go Again' solo you started (that's the one I learned). I believe that is from the US 'Radio' version of the song from the Greatest Hits CD. I think it may have been Dan Huff that played that one. And he is an amazing guitarist.
None of the kit you've been using here actually sounds 'bad', and there are obvious sonic differences between similar items. However, when playing live, the sound of a single amp can change dramatically depending on where the listener is standing/sitting, and these differences are often more pronounced than swapping power amps/speakers etc. Although I personally prefer the feel of playing through a valve amp, I tend to take out my old Peavey Bandit Red Stripe when my kit is being used as backline for a jam. I've even used a Mooer Two Rock preamp into an EHX magnum 44 via a Boss reverb, with amazing success, when I can't get my car near to a venue!
Fair enough Keith. If it works it works! The desire to play trumps the desire to sound great. Good philosophy, although there aren’t many places you can’t haul a Victory V40 and nice 112. Cheers!
I have the Amt P1 and a 5150 block letter and its very close to the real thing, also a friend of mine has a rig built around the Vox and the Engel based Amt Pre, he uses both direct recording and live, and his tones are great
As preamp pedals go, you should try the Fredamp pedals. All tubes preamp, some classic circuits (fender, marshall,...) and some original designs. He also does custom, some pedals and amps.
Constable is hard to beat. The Orange was impressive too. I think the Mooer pedals sound good. Suitable as a backup. Not sure if they do that same 'thing' though. Not as inspiring.
Interesting stuff. Aside from the bleeps (which were hilarious) I was fascinated by the differences between the the power amps. With the [bleep]stable set clean they sounded pretty similar but as soon as the gain was cranked, or the OCD added, the Fryette seemed to bloom whilst the Palmer closed up. Not that the Palmer sounded bad, I'd certainly use it, but the Fryette seemed to not so much be in a different league but playing a different ball game altogether!!
+Kevin Betts It's so interesting isn't it? We try hard to be open minded about things and keep in mind that everybody likes different things. For the kind of the playing Dan and I like, valves seem to deliver the sound and feel that's most inspiring. But there's a lifetime of conditioning in there so we're not saying there's anything objective in this! Our only hope is that it helps anybody who is interested, in asking more relevant questions as to how they might enjoy their tone and playing more. Whatever gear they choose. Thanks for watching!
It amazes me that you guys manage to find interesting things to talk about each week! I suspect each episode throws up more questions than it answers opening up new avenues for discussion and humour.
+Martyn Kent Francis Yes. We're going to be trying some Universal Audio gear soon, so this may be an interesting avenue as we learn about that. Cheers!
Mick took out the patch cable from the Marshall he found neatly arranged, and then put it back both backwards and messy. My OCD was killing me for the rest of the video. 😂
I think something is getting lost in the TH-cam compression or something because to my ears the Mooer pedals totally kept up with the Kingsley in terms of tone. The edge of breakup Vox and Fender tones were spot on! And the fact they both took the OCD well its really impressive. Would you put any of these preamps last in the signal chain or after your gain, before mods/delays/reverbs?
+Steven Laumer That's the great thing about tone and sound - we all have different likes and dislikes. For us, even on TH-cam the differences between the Constable and Mooers are palpable, but as we said it's all subjective at the end of the day. We'd place them after Drive and modulation pedals, and before delays and verbs. Cheers!
Very informative video guys! The Matrix Gt1000fx power amp into a pair of 1x12s using the helix is my choice of setup nowadays in wet/dry mode....lightweight/portable & sounds killer. keep up top work 🤘
T-SHIRTS you gotta make some TPS T-SHIRTS with the logo TPS 668 The Neighbour of The Beast! Black with purple print (of course...) and mind's a size large please! 🤘
Showing my age: I purchased a TS Rockman back in the 80s. That had a huge output capable of going DI, or to bypass the front-end of one's amp. Maybe it's worth a historical revisit? It had a mid-notch button that induced a Randy R type sound. It was a revelation at that time; John McLaughlin being one famous user of it (he toured with it DI).
That Pedal Show: he did indeed indeed. JS said that the Rockman made him feel like Holdsworth! He described that it had a kind of "tunnel vision" in that the tonal range was controlled and restricted. I've just set mine back up and am using it as an extra sound option into a few choice racks (Sony M7/D7/Lexicon Reflex). Sounds awesome!
I think the Fryette blows the palmer out of the water. I've been looking at the power station for a load box and attenuator for my 100 watt heads. I think I'll do it. Great eq options on it too.
Every time I look down at my Constable pedal I think of this video and smile. Thanks Dan.
Mick's playing is absolutely killer in this one - Go Orange!
+Harry Higgs Thank you Harry! Some nice tones in there I thought. :0)
I have been playing for years with little to no knowledge of pedals and what they can add. Your show is an amazing learning tool for me!! Thanks for the show!
+David James ah, cheers David, thanks for watching
Only halfway through but I can say that this is already one of my favorites. This is the type of video that keeps me coming back. I love this level of exploration and it's just fun to see the possibilities. You gentlemen, are "ace".
+Erik Dodd ah, cheers Erik :)
TPS is like Christmas; you wake up eager to see what's under the tree, and then after the show is over, you get all sad that you have to wait a long time before it comes again.
Too true! But it's a weekly Christmas so it's ok, lol 😋
I felt this way whenever Rocky and Bullwinkle ended on Saturday morning. I just dated myself big time.
Not necessarily. .....im 30 and used to watch it on Saturday mornings myself
Rick Greene Thundarr the Barbarian
Not only are you guys doing cooler pedal stuff each video, all this time you're spending together has made your comedy chops really up their game. I was laughing through the whole video! Keep up the good work guys.
+John Giardiniere Excellent, thanks John. It's fun for us, so we're glad it's fun for you too!
That’s awesome, and that’s what it’s all about. Just unlocking routes and combinations that get you going. Happy days!
This is the greatest guitar oriented show on TH-cam!! Thanks guys!
+Frank Speer Thanks Frank - glad you enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
Definitely agree with the 'recorded sound' description from a modeler.
That's the charm/benefit for me recording directly at home and also why I'll always prefer to use a 'real' amp with the band.
+Ishan Cooper That's pretty much where we are with it. Thanks for watching!
That Pedal Show Always a pleasure guys!
Btw, I found some good BTS pics of you guys at Keeley booth on my camera. I'll send em over!
+Geoff Nightingale There you go'
I just switched my rig over to this arrangement...Bogner Ecstasy Blue pedal into Fender Supersonic 22 poweramp...what a kickin' sound!
Hi Andre,
It will not sound at it's best, like the majority of pedals it was designed to be used into the input of an amp. If you use it direct into an power amp you will loose some gain and some punch, the red pedal is better suited for that as it has much more gain.
Regards,
j o r g
I have a Constable V1. LOVE it. I use it to either drive 2 Atomic 112-50s, a preamp for a Digitech Cabdryvr, or a boost to 2 Princeton Reverbs/or Velocettes. Always amazing.
thank you for making this, I understand preamps so much better now lol
Just want to give a thanks for you guys for making these videos, they are awesome and informative. And because of a few videos you've done this year I have finally gone and got myself my first Compression Pedal. I have only had it a day and already don't know how I could have lived without it for my clean sounds for so long, it just balances everything out so nicely and adds that little bit of sustain that just slightly fattens my sound without losing the tele twang!! So thank you guys for just being pedal inspirations!!
Oh and Dan, "668 the neighbour of the beast" good joke :)
+Matthew Rayment Wicked, nice one Matthew! Glad you're getting something useful from this. Sound better, play more. Happy days!
Sorry for the long winded post.... you have me thinking out loud.
It remains fascinating.
Learned today:
1) The constable is awesome
2) The orange was great. Mick' playing was awesome in this part ... on fire! ... but that thing is too large
3) the Mooer stuff is not cutting it
4) all cabsims straight to the desk were horrible sounding.
Nice episode! Preamp on the pedalboard into a valve poweramp is something I have been doing for years. Try the AMT 11a on the show please. I think it is nice.
+Frank N Excellent! Thanks for watching Frank, and for the kind words too. Cheers!
Have fun!
Around 53 mins was one of the nicest clean sounds I've heard with a Les Paul.
+fossilmatic it's funny, there are times when I love the cleans from that guitar, and other times when it just doesn't work. But it can sound great clean
+That Pedal Show Wait til we get the new Two Rock (Mick here). Those will be the best cleans it ever makes. :0)
Yes Mick! I could listen to the "Here we go again" solo on repeat, all day!!
+Hodnisguitar Such a lovely solo. Somebody further down the comments said that Dann Huff played that one. Nice!
Yes, so I've heard.. Been listening to a lot of Giant lately! If you ask me nobody beats Lukather.. but Dann Huff sure comes close!
This was awesome! I was wondering myself if it would be worth trying the preamp pedal+poweramp way for my new and more portable rig.
If I may, I would suggest a part two of this with some more high-end competition for the Con"beep" ;). For example the Seymour Duncan Palladium, the Suhr Eclipse, some Amt's stuff, Bogner's, the Theta, or other ones of your liking.
...Please :)
Thank you!
Thanks :)
+Jakub Tytus That's a great suggestion Jakub and well worth trying. Perhaps there's a show in here somewhere. Thanks for watching!
And as an aside the show demonstrated how good a pedal the OCD is.
these cab simulators sound like how I imagine a real cab would sound if it was wrapped in a blanket, lol
There has to be a way that doesn't involve me and Dan both going bankrupt! ;0)
Always look forward to the message in my inbox that a new episode is here. Thanks so much guys for great "infotainment"
Cheers Nathan - enjoy!
Cheers!
+Francis Gori Excellent, cheers Frank. With with you on the valves thing, but it's all a matter of taste at the end of the day. Thanks for watching!
I don't know what that riff is that Dan plays at the 33:00 mark but I can't stop replaying it.
You mean "I feel fine" by the Beatles?
sickleclowns Oh it's a Beatles song, no wonder I love it!
And here we go!
Jerry Garcia used a fender twin preamp and a solid state power amp and it sounded amazing
Those even order harmonics are the ones most people find extra pleasing to the ears.. if it sounds best to your ears then that's it whether it's valve solid state or digital it's whatever inspires you
Come on Mick - we all know that's not how you pronounce "constable" ;)
😂
I think C*nstable would sell better! ;-)
Way Huge would probably call it the Slippery C*ntstable.
All I hear is someone from 'down under.' Pull you're head up and act like some verbal law needs enforcement.
I use the Tech21 FlyRig 5 straight into the effects loop of an amp. Fender cleans, Plexi crunch, reverb, boost and delay...not much more I need. Great show guys!
+Simon Cook We'll get some Tech 21 on the show soon. We couldn't believe how small they are!
Yes Mick! That Dan Huff solo is a lovely guitar solo. 4:43
Ah, Dan Huff! I think I knew that couldn't recall it. Makes sense - what a player! Thanks for watching!
Dann Huff, my favorite guitarist ! ( Dan and Mick are close seconds)
Ah, yes. Dann double-n!
7:34 is a great moment in history
Bax bangeeter sounds great, micks on fire today!!!
Hey Guys,
Great show as always!
"What number would you own if you could own a number?"
Brilliant question, Mick! Dibs on 52!
+Rick Greene hahahah
Cheers!
I click the like button before I even watch the video now.
The neighbour of the beast! lol
the neighbor of the beast could be the name of your next custom overdrive.
Shouldn't that be the "Neunaber of the beast"?
ahahahaha
Sounds like a weird Al Yankovic album
6.66 is 1/100th of the number of the beast ergo a delay of that subdivision is most evil (shortest snapback ever 1/100th?)
The Constable through the Fryette at 48.08 just before you kicked the reverb in sounded very Deep purple Fireball No No No ish
Top work again fellas
If only Kingsley did a Hiwatt version I would be waving my money
Two questions:
1) Where would you put a valve pre like the Constable in your signal chain?
That day tripper sounds ace
IDEA! "Stump D&M" - we submit songs with iconic guitar sounds and D&M try to recreate the sound on the spot - no pre-prep. It was inspired by INXS "Need You Tonight" and thinking "what pedals did he use?" do it do it.
+intrsoul That's interesting! Could be fun!
I was literally about to suggest this very topic, so glad you did this!
Cool episode guys! Was just planning to get into a very similar Rig. The next hour is saving me days of research. :) Cheers.
Nice one Tim. At the very least we hope it helps narrow your questions a little bit. Cheers!
I'm sure it will! As of yet I have some Kingsley pedals on order. The only question remaining is: where to go from there (Cabsim, Solid State/Tube Poweramp etc.)? Curious to hear what kind of sounds you can come up with in this video.
I wonder what the Mooer Koch pre-amp pedal would sound like into the Constable. Probably be a good fit.
Koch preamp rules- check out Brett Kingman here from 10:30 on...when he hits the gain channel he exclaims- "WOW" th-cam.com/video/pABpfXLIXlI/w-d-xo.html
Is part 2 of this out? Thanks for all you guys do !!!!
+David Chase-Lopes Nope. We've only done this one so far. Cheers!
It would be great to see à video highlighting tech 21. Their sansamp pedal series play great through the return. Keep it up, look forward every week
That Orange just kills. That would make a very fine "second channel" to my Laney L5 setup...
+Tuomas Raatikainen Cool isn't it?! Super versatile.
those Mooer pedals sound much better than I was expecting them to..
Great show guys! I would love if you could extended the subject and also explore the amp slaving of a small tube amp into a big power amp. Best
Thank you!
+Denis M A lot of people would like that Denis. Amp comparisons are always interesting. Maybe we can look into it. Cheers!
+Justin Garcia Excellent! Effectrode make lovely stuff - glad it's working for you!
I LOVE you guys for doing this exact episode!
+Robin Taylor And we love you Robin. Thanks for watching!
Love the Omega shot at 28:56!
First to get it out of my system: Hotrod Deluxe/Deville was called Blues Deluxe/Deville in the ancient times. I use a section of my pb ending with a preamp before a tube amp and another pb section sans pre into a very cheap solid state amp. The mix is glorious. I think.
great show guys! glad you guys are starting to broaden our horizons with using Solid state etc... in your comparisons.
+Jonny Rock Nice one Jonny. Consensus of opinion seems to be Dann Huff. Nice job that man. Thanks for watching!
I've been using a Carl Martin Plexitone into a EHX Magnum44 for live use a lot recently. Kicks a surprising amount of butt!
Cheers!
That Pedal Show That Victory would win every time for me, but at the age of 65 my gear humping abilities are getting less!
Thanks you guys for so many info on gear!!! It would be nice if you could try a hotone nano legacy floor pre-amp sometime.
You should try russian preamp amt f1. This is amazing, sounds fantastically natural
I have the Amt P1 and a 5150 block letter and its very close to the real thing, also a friend of mine has a rig built around the Vox and the Engel based Amt Pre, he uses both direct recording and live, and his tones are great
Mick's playing has improved greatly ( he was good before) since he's been in the Hendrix cover band.
Great show as always
As preamp pedals go, you should try the Fredamp pedals. All tubes preamp, some classic circuits (fender, marshall,...) and some original designs. He also does custom, some pedals and amps.
Cracked up watching Dan jam out at 48:14! Haha. I was making the same face lol. Awesome video once again!
Omg I've been looking into this same topic myself. Digital pre amp into power amp = versatility. Line 6 helix = Axe FX killer!!
Yaaaa, new episode!
Would be even cooler if you also had SansAmp there to compare it with these newer preamps/ampsimulators.
That Orange is awesome
+Taras Tkachenko We will almost certainly do a Part 2 featuring some Tech 21 stuff. Cheers!
That Pedal Show, Looking forward to see it. Thanks for the reply!
Hi guys, could you do a vid using speaker sim /load boxes e.g.: torpedo live for silent real valve amp recording? Thanks and all the best 👍
+Kyle Patterson Would it help to know that it was me that made it tidy in the first place? (Mick here)
I think something is getting lost in the TH-cam compression or something because to my ears the Mooer pedals totally kept up with the Kingsley in terms of tone.
The Matrix Gt1000fx power amp into a pair of 1x12s using the helix is my choice of setup nowadays in wet/dry mode....lightweight/portable & sounds killer.
keep up top work 🤘
It's worth mentioning (apologies if I missed in the vid) that those Mooer preamp pedals are only about £95. That's a heck of a deal.
+morphine0000 absolutely
That MXR reverb is just g-l-o-r-i-o-u-s
LOL 40:45 We've learned that I'm getting a c(BEEP)stable... that's hilarious
The Mooers sounded asthmatic to me, but the Constable, no matter how you pronounce it, sounded glorious. But Mick makes most things sound good!
+Simon Smith Thank you much. :0)
T-SHIRTS you gotta make some TPS T-SHIRTS with the logo TPS 668 The Neighbour of The Beast! Black with purple print (of course...) and mind's a size large please! 🤘
+Paul Twiselton YES!
That Pedal Show Great stuff guys!
+Dale Harris Didn't Satch record most of Surfing With The Alien with one of those?
That Pedal Show: he did indeed indeed. JS said that the Rockman made him feel like Holdsworth! He described that it had a kind of "tunnel vision" in that the tonal range was controlled and restricted. I've just set mine back up and am using it as an extra sound option into a few choice racks (Sony M7/D7/Lexicon Reflex). Sounds awesome!
I think the Fryette blows the palmer out of the water. I've been looking at the power station for a load box and attenuator for my 100 watt heads. I think I'll do it. Great eq options on it too.
+Stephen Naveed were sooo impressed with the PS, Fryette are making some fantastic stuff
