Thanks Vertex for this interview! An absolute privilege to hear Simon share his wisdom and knowledge, as always. I have had the pleasure of knowing Simon for close to 30 years and have watched him develop Kingsley into the world class, premium boutique brand it is. One thing that shouldn't surprise anyone is that if you hear and see Simon play, it answers a lot of questions immediately. The man is an absolute, stellar world class guitarist. It's one thing to understand circuits, signal path and all things relative to the genius work in Kingsley designs but it is clear he understands things probably first and foremost, as a incredibly accomplished musician. I know many people know this, but if for some reason you haven't heard Simon, you're missing the best answer to all these questions. Careful though, you will then want to buy everything Kingsley makes!
I have a few of SImon's pedals and they're excellent. The Kingsley Page is in particular, I think, a modern classic. It seems to be voiced in a way that works with pretty much any rig. It can be an "always on" adding feel and a little tube compression. A low gain overdrive, a solo boost..It works well for all of those things. Oh btw, Mason, you know Simon makes your pedal namesake right?
I had a fantastic experience with Simon. I called him out of the blue to figure out which of his pedals fit my needs the best. He was glad to talk to me, and we landed on a Minstrel v3 - which sounds amazing.
I have 2 tube pedals, both B.K. Butler designs but not Kingsleys. A Blue Tube and a Real Tube, both from the early 90s. They both use a full 120-volt AC cord! So I just plug my power supply and that, into a power strip under the pedal board, so there's still really only one power cord. It's actually handy, because then the power strip's toggle switch can be the full board power switch.
I have the BK Butler tube driver as well, i dig what it does well. It's a bit tricky in a some pedal chains tho. I can highly recommend getting a Jester or Page and you get so much usefulness, always on, richness and stackability. The Jester is a real Pre Amp too, plug straight in to a effects return. Reverb had Jesters for like >350 at times, you wouldn't be disappointed. Good luck
I love Kingley gear, have the Constable and the Jester. With the wait, can't agree with four weeks. Ordered in August last year, received in May. I'm a long way away in Australia, but the process required quite some patience. But the hype is real - nothing sounds like it.
Great show. I am fortunate to have used Kingsley amps for over 20 years now. I own one of Simons amplifiers (Bastion 40- Inspired by Dumble and sounds identical to Robben Fords Dumble to my ears) which is amazing and I have a Kingsley Page as well which thanks to Simons advice I run through the effects loop of the Bastion. It's all awesome!!
I have 4 of his pedals: Harlot, Page, Minstrel, and Hatchet. The Hatchet changed my life. Literally. How? Well, it ended all of my attempts to get an amp head sound with power amp feel and breakup without having to use an actual head. I have preamps from Bogner, Marshall, Rocktron, Synergy, and more. Running a preamp super hot into the Hatchet is the solution to that missing “it” that you don’t get with running seperate preamp/power amp configurations. Looking to get his Artisan next.
I love the Kingsley pedals! Been seeing and hearing them for years on TPS. I play bass, so they’re not for me...😢 But, I’ve been using an old SIB FatDrive (tube) pedal for 20+ years. It’s great! Never let my down. It will drive a power amp too with ease. But, it’s a little large for a pedalboard... I’d love a simple high quality Kingsley tube preamp pedal for bass!
Fascinating discussion, thanks gents! I would love a Page, recommended on YT by a couple of players whose work I respect and will doubtless grab one. In HK it's not easy to try one but this is one pedal I could go for online HOWEVER I need to do a bit more research as the website mentions the Page DS and also TS, which looks like being a true pre-amp for back of the amp FX Loop insert. I have a Victory Copper which is designed for that and also an Effectrode Blackbird - both Tube Pedals and both terrific at what they do (essentially Dumblish & Vox30ish, respectively, altho I should mention at this point I have used them before an amp or DI into my desk as I don't have an amp with FX Loop and the Blackbird is my 'always on' for my Sadowsky guitar before modulation etc.). I am a sucker for tube based stuff (been playing since the early '70s) so, yeah, will look deeper into the Kingsley stuff for sure!

Great show! A master class in understanding tube-driven pedals. Always learn something when I listen to Simon (and the Chairmen, too)!

Has anyone heard Simon play guitar? . . . he is fantastic. - I see a Kingsley Minstrel in my future.
