Ah yes the days when all of Sesame Street unknowingly tried to gaslight Big Bird into thinking Snuffy wasn't real, only for the writers to realize that maybe making kids think no one would believe them if they said a stranger kept coming into their room was a bad idea, and deciding to end the bit.

I feel like a lot of the Faerie Tale Theatre episodes would be good fodder, especially "The Boy Who Left Home To Find Out About The Shivers." The cast alone would give The Snob lots of good reference jokes (Peter MacNicol, Dana Hill, Christpher Lee, David Warner, and Frank fucking Zappa).

I must admit that my introduction to the large library of Jim Hensons work wasnt Muppets or Sesame Street, but rather Fraggle Rock. Marjory the trash heap scared me a little actually as a kid. It must be so sweaty walking around in the bird costume. Trash cans makes me think of garbage pale kids.
The only Sesame Street special I had on VHS as a kid was 1978's "Christmas Eve On Sesame Street", which I have fond memories of. Specifically the parts where Cookie Monster is trying to contact Santa by writing/typing a letter and calling him, but eventually eats everything.
This special was broadcast a LONG TIME after I'd stopped watching the show and, truthfully, a lot of what made the early years of Sesame Street so awesome was, by 1983, no longer present. Still, it's interesting to note how many of the cast from that "golden era" were still around. R.I.P. Northern Calloway, Bob McGrath, Emilio Delgado, Alaina Reed, and OF COURSE, Jim Henson, Caroll Spinney and Jerry Nelson.

I do remember Big Bird in Japan one which had some mysterious girl what at one point vanish and Big Bird was like "Oh, maybe she is like Zorro" :) But it was very sad in tone. Good times!

A lot of Sesame Street sounds really corny when you're an adult, but the personalities of the characters always pulls it through... Apparently it got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Children's Program in its year...
Thank you for this. For the past 30+ years this special has lurked in the back of my mind. The only time I ever saw it was on T.V. when I was young, and I think sick with the flu or something. I had honestly thought it dreamed it up, like a literal fever dream. Freaked me the heck out. All I remembered from it was Sesame Street characters, large statues in even larger empty rooms, some Egyptian theme area and s spooky/freaky portal and head.
This was the only special that I remember ever watching and enjoying when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s. I, too, had it on tape and I about wore the thing out!
I just went to the Met and stood right where the Demon appeared. It's literally just to the right of the entry hall, at the front of the Egyptian exhibit. I showed everyone the clip and they were amazed.

Probably a no- brainer, but the one I remember watching the most was Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. It was the right balance of heart and charm seeing Big Bird try to find out how Santa goes down a chimney and I still laugh my rear off at Cookie Monster trying to write Santa a letter. I still burst into tears and laughs seeing him karate chop the typewriter. I do wonder if that will be on the menu next month...🤔
You would get emotional seeing Bert trading his bottle caps for a gift for Ernie, and Ernie trading his rubber duck for a gift for Bert. They sadly gift each other and realize they can't use the gifts because they traded away the intended items. Mr. Hooper came through in the end, though, RIP....

Something I just saw that I find very strange is that Don't eat the Pictures was aired the week before the episode where they address Mr. Hooper's death. So the week before one of the most honest, down to earth discussions on death you'll ever see on television they had a special about how when you die you live on as a start after being judged by Egyptian gods.
the Baker bits always fascinated me. he would fall down even if he only had 2 cakes. these bits were done by Jim Henson and you can see very old versions of the Sesame Street Muppets in them as well as Hensons kids
Even though I was just a tad too old to have seen this one, it’s great to see the cast again, including David. These people were as important to me as my family and teachers.
I don't think I've ever heard of this one. I do remember seeing a couple specials that revolved around learning about "Firefighting" and "Hospitals" when they were played at my Elementary School. Does look like a solid special. Or in the very least it keeps the characters as they are, and not turning them into slasher villains like last week's tale of Winnie the Pooh. lol

As a New York resident, this was such a treat. I saw this in 2nd grade art class. Also, I go to the Metropolitan Museum all the time and the Egyptian section hasn't changed at all!

These were the "Snuffy is just Big Bird's imaginary friend... I guess?..." years, so they didn't bother with explanations... but it is weird now he is real in canon.

You don't really need much of an explanation but the moment Snuffy is reals real you start thinking on how he left Sesame Street without the others and nobody sees him leave and still believe he's imaginary, and stuff. Funny how world-building works.
I remember watching this when it aired on PBS, but none of the details. When I was watching Sesame Street they had a garbage man named Bruno who would carry Oscar around in his trash can. I wonder why they didn't use him in this. "Did George Washington worry about the sniffles?" is kind of sad, considering Jim Henson is said to have died because he waited to long before going to the doctor when he was sick. (Although Frank Oz said in an interview that the stress of the negotiations with Disney to buy The Muppets is what killed him. Michael Eisner kept insisting that he wanted to buy Sesame Street, too, but Henson refused.)
Since you asked at the end abo it stuff from our childhood I do remember one thing. Rankin bass released a Christmas special that only aired ONCE. I think it had Eartha Kitt in it as a cat and it was called “Santa Baby”
Since you bring up odd specials you remember watching growing up. I've always remembered the holiday special "Olive the other reindeer" from when I was a teen. It's not the best holiday special but for some reason it's stuck with me.
Oh wow! I think I actually saw this special as a kid. The parts with Egyptian prince, and the scenes with the Cookie Monster (since it tied back into the title) feel *very* familiar. Knowing my parents, they probably rented the VHS at some point and put it on for me when I was real young, since I was very into Sesame Street at the time. Talk about unlocking a lost memory for sure!
You left out my favorite part where Cookie sings about not eating mummies. It gives me an image of an action scene in which Cookie Monster saves the day by eating Boris Karloff, Arnold Vosloo and Sofia Boutella.

One of the three great Old-Skool Sesame Street specials, although "Big Bird in China" is still considered the gold-standard classic.

You should review 1978's 'Christmas Eve on Sesame Street'. I remember watching it in the 80s and asking myself, 'Who's this 'Hooper' guy? I've never seen him before!'

These were the "Snuffy is just Big Bird's imaginary friend... I guess?..." years, so they didn't bother with explanations... but it is weird now he is real in canon.

@@christinaflibotte6446 Big Bird did say he had an appointment with Snuffy in the museum, so however he got there, he went on purpose to the museum just like everyone else just not with him. You don't really need much of an explanation but the moment Snuffy is reals real you start thinking on how he left Sesame Street without the others and nobody sees him leave and still believe he's imaginary, and stuff. Funny how world-building works.

When I was watching Sesame Street they had a garbage man named Bruno who would carry Oscar around in his trash can. I wonder why they didn't use him in this.
"Did George Washington worry about the sniffles?" is kind of sad, considering Jim Henson is said to have died because he waited to long before going to the doctor when he was sick. (Although Frank Oz said in an interview that the stress of the negotiations with Disney to buy The Muppets is what killed him. Michael Eisner kept insisting that he wanted to buy Sesame Street, too, but Henson refused.)
Since you asked at the end abo it stuff from our childhood I do remember one thing. Rankin bass released a Christmas special that only aired ONCE. I think it had Eartha Kitt in it as a cat and it was called “Santa Baby”

Since you bring up odd specials you remember watching growing up. I've always remembered the holiday special "Olive the other reindeer" from when I was a teen. It's not the best holiday special but for some reason it's stuck with me.
Oh wow! I think I actually saw this special as a kid. The parts with Egyptian prince, and the scenes with the Cookie Monster (since it tied back into the title) feel *very* familiar. Knowing my parents, they probably rented the VHS at some point and put it on for me when I was real young, since I was very into Sesame Street at the time. Talk about unlocking a lost memory for sure!
Ok now i'm hoping that next month we'll get a Snob review of "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street"

You left out my favorite part where Cookie sings about not eating mummies. It gives me an image of an action scene in which Cookie Monster saves the day by eating Boris Karloff, Arnold Vosloo and Sofia Boutella.

Damn! Okay. Growing up whenever I heard about the idea of weighing someone's heart against a feather I associated it with something I saw as a kid. So finally seeing that this was the special that triggered that finally makes a lot of sense to me!
