    It's really interesting, getting a beatboxer's perspective on this group! Layne is such an interesting vocal percussionist, and while there is an abundance of folks out there who can discuss vocal technique, composition, etc, there are far fewer who can intelligently speak about wha Layne is doing. I'm really enjoying your breakdowns, as much for your enjoyment of the music as the knowledge you can share while explaining some of the sounds we're hearing. Speaking of, there is an absolutely crazy sound that Layne makes in VoicePlay's cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On". I don't think anyone knows how he produced it, and the only 'clue' we really have about it is that he says the face he makes in the video while performing that sound isn't how he makes it (apparently he has to make a pretty crazy face to get the sound out, and he didn't think it would look great for the video). The best way I can think of to describe that sound is like a spider tapdancing across your brain, or something skittering down a long, empty hallway. It's mad.

      Actually, Layne once discussed that sound with patrons and taught us how to make it. I can make the sound, but haven’t been able to make it change pitch. (There is a TH-cam video of someone making almost the same sound. He’s the one that made the sound for Predator.)

    Layne talks about layering his beatboxing on multiple tracks - listen to the interview with him at Charismatic Voice, with Elizabeth. I suspect that Layne sees beatboxing as a tool, and the video as the art he's constructing. So "purity" in terms of how he gets there might be less important to him than the end product. I'm speculating based on various comments he's made.

    • @saddlebag
      @saddlebag 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      He’s not the only one who may sometimes be multitracked, such as Geoff in The Oogie Boogie Song, or I believe I’ve seen someone say Eli in Eleanor Rigby. When Voiceplay finds themselves a person short and none of the other members are capable of subbing in for the unassigned part, multitracking is a reasonable alternative.

    This is something different, with their voices used as intruments. The high voice is from Earl Elkins Jnr who was an original member of VP but left in 2020 for personal reasons. Geoff (Jeff) has made videos explaining how to sing low, or very low. Eli is known by the guys as the rock god, he used to sing with rock bands, in Japan I believe (not said Eel-eye, say it as Ellie.) His name is short for Eliezer.

    The conceit of the video is that the VoicePlay members are MIDI instruments, and he's plugged cables into them so he can control their voices with the keyboard/pad/etc. What _actually_ happened of course is that they recorded parts and sent them to him and he used those recorded parts to create the audio track, and then the video was filmed after that, as one does.

    My understanding for the was VoicePlay gave Kurt their vocals and he did his "arrangement" where he added whatever synth/processing he does to their tracks.
    Also, Layne has made it known that what you see him do on screen is video friendly as far as faces to go with sounds due to some of the faces being too bizarre 😅

    There are a couple different ways to do subharmonics. One is created by mixing a root note one octave higher than the target note with a note that is a 5th lower, which mixes and creates a note exactly one octave lower. Given Geoff's lowest recorded subharmonic is a B0 and his lowest chest note is an F1 and F#1 is exactly an inverted 5th below B1, I am sure that is the technique he uses. That technique also results in the thickest sound, which Geoff's subs are crazy thick.

      And so there is a bit of sampling their voices and then 'playing' them involved. That is what Kurt does. He has a fantastic channel to explore.
      However, it is not as prevalent as it might seem. Earl really does have that high 'laser beam' voice. You might want to check out their "Queen in 5 Minutes" video. Earl is the 'main' singer although all of them have leads for certain songs. Note: two of the most amazing bits in it are from Geoff and Eli. Also - probably one of their most theatrical videos as it tells a story that is not related to the songs. Although admittedly, they do that on the Panic at the Disco medleys, too. Which by the way are also amazing. When/If you do their 'Queen' video, be sure to pause to read as they introduce the 'characters' without that info as each is introduced it can be tough to figure out what the story is about.

    So glad you gave Eli props. Way too often he gets overlooked or missed bc of other flashy stuff happening. .... and he is SO DAMN versatile and talented. His low range is also pretty impressive for being such a high tenor. He can sound crystal clear one second and then thr next have that rock rasp, while still having incredible vocal dexterity in his vocal runs and riffs. Im a huge Eli fan.

    Layne has been a beatboxer since 2003 when Scott Porter left the group for acting.
    He is continually surprising us with new sounds. His most famous is the inhale note. He first did it in their video "Enemy". He did Santa's sleigh bells in "The Chipmunk Song/Christmas Don't Be Late". The man is amazing and my favorite beatboxer.

    • @hwyla4416

      I think (based on Layne's interview with Peter Barber) that Geoff 'taught' him well before Scott left them. In the interview, he spoke about beginning to beatbox in high school. Hence it is less surprising that he decided to become the beatboxer and let VoicePlay find a new baritone.
