  • All Aboard the Yorkshire Express goes behind the scenes at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway; taking us back in time to the golden age of steam. This year they're celebrating their fiftieth anniversary and we join them as they welcome coach trips, wedding parties and train spotters alike in what they hope will be the railway's busiest year yet.

Can I become a steam locomotive engineman? Although aged 60, I have my ticket to do it. Ticket? My grandfathers 45 year long service award, an engraved Smiths gold wristwatch, from British Rail, having started as a cleaner in 1919. Plus my lineage: Two grand fathers with over 45 years service each as steam locomotive engine drivers (GCR/LNER/BR); one uncle as top link steam locomotive engineman (LNWR/LMS/BR - who promised me a start at Crewe that could never happen - steam gone); one uncle from oily rag (cleaner) to senior instructor at BR (steam/diesel/electric - LNER/BR); three uncles as firemen (LNER/BR). Besides this I swear that I can detect a steam locomotive at a distance of a mile away, and that my blood is almost steam. Give me a shovel and it will probably do all the work itself helped by the ghosts of my ancestors. Enough?

no, you start at the bottom and spend time proving your capable. if you show the aptitude and work ethic you can go on up the grades as advancement slots allow. the blood that runs through your vain dosent secure you a place. only your graft and skill you show as YOU will be cleaning the engines with that rag. not your family name. as an fyi, theirs a 70 year old firing the locos were i work. so as far as im concerned if your fit and well and have a strong back and mind then send an email to there head or recruitment or turn up in person and ask any platform staff were to start. i belive in you, and its worth going for it even if you dont make the grade. be warnd its at least 40turns as a cleaner before someone will put you on a list to be coincided.

To become a driver will take a long time. On the NYMR you start out as a cleaner where at the moment upgrading from cleaner to fireman will take a minimum 5 years. Once a fireman it could be quite a few more before you pass to driver. The volunteers working there atm may have ancestors who worked on the railway, but they're having to put the graft in to advance. If it's a real ambition of yours, visit the website and sign up (the more the merrier) but the longer you wait, the more hard grafting volunteers will be ahead of you to "pass out" and advance on to the next part of their ambition.
Edit: If you do want to start volunteering, don't worry about age as you will nowhere near be the oldest person there.
