Seeing the N64 struggle to read the cartridge and start the game put a nice smile on my face: That really is how it was. Can you imagine if a modern game console released and it was as finnicky as the n64 was? I also never really put it together till you mentioned it that the Delibird minigame was basically a retooling of the Likitung one, but you're totally right. Speaking of the minigames, I've always thought that Pokken (which I play competitively and do some community stuff with, I actually shot you an email about your eventual Paraspective on it) would benefit from a similar set of Minigames: Stadium's already focus on reaction time, pattern recognition, or precise timing and spacing, so I could easily see such minigames being used to teach fighting game concepts like timing combos or punishes/spacing moves, or responding to mixups, etc. It'd also be a great way to add some mode variety for more casual players or in a party game context, you could probably reuse the models and animations from the main fighting game mode in them, and In some ways Pokken is similar to the Stadium titles as a more dynamic and better rendered depiction of Pokemon battles vs the mainline series.
I will get back to you on this! And what’s funny about the cartridge not working bit, it worked no problem on my first two attempts so I had to keep trying to get it to NOT work.
Yeah, after New Snap finally became a thing, I got way more hopeful for a New Stadium game. Like, nowadays, I don't care for an adventure or RPG elements in a Stadium game, but just give us the BEST possible battle simulator, with proper animations, customizable rental teams, being able to use your own Pokémon from Home. And give us challenges like in the old Stadium games, like having actual championships or being able to battle against older Gym Leaders and Elite 4. Also, and here's the most important thing to make it an actual good Stadium game: the mini-games!
Pokémon Gen 2 was easily my favorite of the series thus far. I’ll always remember the time me and friends played Stadium 2’s mini games and battle each other without knowing too much about type advantages lol boy were we clueless back then. Good memories really.
I remember when I went to Toys R' Us and was so hyped to get it. Man, that was an awesome time. I wish we could have a Stadium 3, with accessibility to more than 900 pokemon, it would be insane on how competitive it would become, truly a masterpiece being held off for a better future? Let's hope so.
I think it would sell a ton. So many more Pokémon to deal with, you could utilize Home with it, the nostalgia is there with the Stadium title… although I bet they would call it New Pokémon Stadium
I'll forever be disappointed that the re-released virtual console games didn't get a stadium/stadium 2 re-release to connect with. I never got to play the stadium games back in the day so it would have been fun to experience them together. I'd like to experience the Gen 2 meta outside of showdown
Pokemon ended after I finished Pokemon Crystal and played all I could out of Pokemon Stadium 2 on the N64. Amazing and beautiful time to be a teenager at the time as I was in high school when I got these games back in the day a few short years before turning 18. When the Nintendo GameCube was released, the world became a darker and more horrifying place after what happened in New York around that time, but my memories was all about escaping the horrible reality by focusing on enjoying myself in some JRPGs that I got more into when I became 18 and could play any JRPG I wanted. Skies of Arcadia (GameCube version) became the JRPG that I resonated most with and that lead me down to some amazing and beautiful Anime inspired JRPGs on the PS3 and the PSP/PS Vita handhelds. But it was the Pokemon games that started that familiarity of JRPGs for me because back when I was a kid, living in PAL region often meant never getting any JRPGs unless you knew where to go to find them.
It sounds pretty similar for you and I, although I avoided Crystal back then. My high school was less Pokémon and more EverQuest and Madden. And Ogre Battle 64
I just found this channel this morning and I’m absolutely in love, pokemon is such a good game series and I still remember the first game I got, a pre-owned platinum where the player name was Jacob and the game was action replayed to shit… I still remember my team of six mews and other silly shit I did, I’m now a senior in high school and still loving the games and TH-cam community around it, thank you for another outlet through which I can help grow my love for Pokémon!! Edit: when you said guide I had a ptsd flashback to sonic and said “Omochu” 😂😭
Stadium 2’s far more durable saves is the last archive of People’s original Pokemon for a lot of people. Wish I had loaded some of mine on there now since all of my GB games have dead batteries. Stadium 2 was also the first, and currently only, official way of setting up tiers. It has a custom setting that lets you set up level limits, which Pokemon are allowed, I think it has settings for items even. Never used it since you needed hand raised Pokemon from the GB games for it, but it was way ahead of its time there. The models are actually so good that Colosseum and XD reused them for the first 251 Pokemon, hence Smeargle’s tail color being reversed.
I’m amazed that my copies of Red, Yellow and two of Blue still haven’t died. But yeah, I’m glad that they can live on Stadium 2 just in case. At least until that no longer works..
Fun fact about Mystery Gift in this game... the game generates two items every time, one for you and one the girl will tell you she got. This is also the only way to get the Scope Lens, an incredibly useful item for competitive play, and one many high-level trainers in the game use! You only have a 0.2% change of getting the Scope Lens and you can only do Mystery Gift once a day (unless you have access to other connections such as Pocket Pikachu 2 or another game) I bring this up mainly to share my salt story of the time where I got a Bitter Berry and the stupid little girl got the Scope Lens. I will never be able to look at her the same way again. That thieving little...
It also actually depends on your TrainerID if you can get it at all. You can get only certain items with a certain ID, so you might be completely out of luck
I was someone who loved Gen 1 and 2 as a kid. Had both Pokemon Stadium games as well. I liked Pokemon Sapphire, and I did rent Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, but I got to a point where I felt like I just needed a break from new Pokemon games for a while. I did eventually return to the series with Heart Gold in 2010.
I genuinely enjoy the compatibility between the stadium and gameboy games, and it’s one of the main reasons I keep going back to both. Something I really, REALLY wish was different was how the leveling worked. This game was built around using your cartridge games, yet all but discourages it because if your Pokemon are not the levels presented in the tournaments, you’ll either get decimated or not be allowed to join at all. If they had just somehow let you scale your Pokemon levels up or down, it would’ve been a game changer. In order to get around this, I’ve definitely abused the mega memory card and creating save states for Pokemon teams at each level that’s used for tournaments. I have a lv.55 variant of my lv.100 teams, same for applicable lv.5 Pokemon. The problem is, this takes a RIDICULOUS amount of time, and that’s even with cutting corners via save states. You’d think the game would be easier with your games since the rentals are bad, but honestly either option is tedious. Even if it takes 15 tries, you’ll beat the game faster with rentals than all the time it takes grinding 6 or more Pokémon to lv100, and if you’re not cheating, lv.55 teams as well. Regardless, the hours spent in grinding and planning pays off when you get to complete the game with your own pokemon (even cooler with shiny teams!). Excellent video, despite the quality of life features this game added for the gameboy games, it could definitely use a few tweaks to make it perfect (starting with getting rid of purely RNG abuse opponents during semifinal rounds…) Edit: also wanted to add that I like the small detail with the mini games where you can use your own Pokemon in them! If they’re shiny they’ll reflect that- good use for the bright red shiny scyther color in stadium 2!
Pokemon Stadium 2 is fantastic & Crystal is the GOAT! I'm replaying the series on my channel & can't wait to jump back on Stadium 2. Those animations & the announcer... Gen 2 was truly peak Pokemon
I agree the series had a lull in popularity during the mid to late 2000's. I stayed a big fan of the series but I could tell most people around me weren't interested anymore. But nowadays they're jealous because I own so many games from that time period that are pretty valuable now.
I remember in like late 2002-2004 the hype for Pokémon really started dying. I remember gen 3 coming out being somewhat popular but that’s also when i noticed school friends, cousins and my older brother stopped caring about pokemon as much and I thought it was weird because I was still a fan.
I wonder if Entei's name was mentioned on the game box specifically because of the movie with him that came out around the same time. Btw, first time I'm seeing your channel and I like your content so far. I can't wait to see more!
This game is one of my favorite n64 games. I wish I could have received the full experience this game offered as a kid but I still had endless fun with my friends as we stayed up late and played the mini games and custom team battles with the bad rental Pokémon lol
At least you still got enjoyment out of the rentals. I can see some of the later game battles being too ridiculous with rentals that it’s almost impossible. But hey, I haven’t really tried that in two decades.
You do such a good job with this retrospectives, is like going back to those simple days, just hanging with Friends and enjoying Poke Mania. Such a simple and effective cover with Ho-Oh & Lugia. Man that was such a hype intro with the Gen 2 Mons. The Eevee mini is adorable. Also u still got a Mew?? Amazing. Looking forward to Gen 3 & Cristal.
That 249 Pokemon figure was because by then Nintendo did not include Mew or Celebi in the count. I think at this point they didn’t have set plans for Crystal and also didn’t know the shenanigans Gamefreak pulled with Mew in Gen 1.
Ahh interesting. Crystal DID come out on the same day as this in Japan, but I can see them not wanting to put emphasis on the two Pokémon you basically get through glitches
@@Paraspectre That makes more sense now that you mention it! I remember my parents bought the US Stadium 2 and it came with a poster of 249 excluding Mew and Celebi, but Nintendo have always disliked people using glitches since RBY; they even tried telling people just encountering Missing No. could ruin your save file to discourage it 😁
I beat the first pocket monsters stadium doing rental randomizer, pocket monsters stadium 2, and stadium rental randomizer, I’m ready for gen 2 goodness especially ost
I forgot I wasn't subbed to you before now. Fixed that! Loved your older videos on the TCG video game, and I had to see this when it came up on my feed!
I spent so much time playing Stadium 2 back in the day, specially playing minigames with my younger sister and being thoroughly humiliated in the gym leader castle.
I just started thinking, since you mentioned why they didn't mention Venusaur or Raikou or Suicune. Perhaps because Blastoise and Charizard were actually on covers of Pokemon games in North America, so there is the correlation to owners of those games. As far as the legendary dogs, mentioning Suicune might spoil the Crystal coming out, and Raikou would maybe be too much electric or similar to Pichu and Pikachu, which they already mentioned, and their evolution is RAIchu, so maybe they were just keeping it fresh in their own way by mentioning the fire type Entei.
I'm guessing Nintendo just assumed every kid who got this already had Stadium 1, and thus already had a transfer pak. At least, that's how it was with me.
*Shows box art* "Now let's play the actual game" *Boots up emulator* Jokes aside, I unapologetically love the Stadium games. And the guides on Earl's Academy are surprisingly in-depth. Doesn't quite get to Bulbapedia levels of information, but it still goes into stuff like STAB and Physical/Special. Also I was pretty good at Egg Emergency, not satisfied with perfect i liked to see how many consecutive perfects I could get
Pokemon stadium was one of the few games on the oldass N64 at my local rec center in school. Since we didn't have any gamepack, mostly we just play the minigames, but they were so damn fun. For the longest time I had even forgotten about the battling part and thought it was some Pokemon-branded Mario Party clone that we had been playing back in the day.
I'm sure you didn't even know that you can check with poke stadium 2 if you have shiny pokemon in the eggs that you got in GBC games just saying this info is more useful for the shiny hunters
Honestly, if you want to keep those pokemon, you should transfer them to the n64 cart and replace the battery. The fact your red still has battery is astonishing and it's partly why it took so many attempts to get it to register for the pak check
Awwwww, yeah! The nostalgia is real. X3 Especially with little cup. Which fun fact: you can play RBY little cup. It's freaking awesome! They allow all lvl up moves. I love using Drowzee leads, with a Pidgey or Spearow assist. For Mirror move shenanigans. :3
Before Crystal was released, the only way you learned about its existence was through the Trainer School. Completing it unlocks the extended library, including Crystal exclusives.
He told you that an attack of the same type as the defender has no chance of giving a secondary status affect (i.e. body slam can't paralyze a normal type), a fact that the competitive community only realized and implemented almost 20 years later o.O
I'm saddened. I used to have both Stadiums but lost them along with my N64 during a move. I loved both games, but funny enough I didn't even remember 2 until I saw those mini-games. I guess I know what I played the most. lol This vid made me want to replay it. Especially since it hit me that 2 actually does teach you how to play Pokemon than the main games themselves. It sucks that Stadium never got a 4 for gen 3. Battle Revolution isn't the same... But yeah, the 2000s the Pokemon fad was dying and around the early 10s were embers. It was still popular but not like it is nowadays, with the fad resurgence. Good times.
I don't think it's nostalgia to rate pkmn stadium 2 higher than the first one. I grew up with stadium 1, and it's the one I've played all my life. I love that game and I have so many memories with it. but until just very recently, less than a month, I get to play stadium 2 and I was very surprised at what an incredible improvement it is from 1. its A LOT more both in quality and quantity. I was really expecting a little upgrade from the first one, or even the same but with new pokemons, I was pleasantly and greatly surprised.
I wish those transfer paks weren't so damn flimsy. I was surprised your still worked, tbh. Mine quit on me before this game came out, and I could never find one for sale on its own so I always assumed I had to find a new copy of Stadium 1 to find a new one, and the base game was nearly unplayable without one because the rentals all had intentionally bad movesets. Had a great time with the minigames though.
What’s funny is that when I set up my gag in the video where it wouldn’t work, it worked fine on my first two attempts 😅. So I had to try and make it give me the error message
@@Paraspectre In case you haven't done this I would see if you could back up those saves since they still have the original battery. I have a Joey jr and I know they have the GB operator out now. They are both around 50 dollars. Seeing you have a game collection you might already know about them and cart dumpers. I am bingeing your channel right now love the little series so far!
I didn’t think many would care to see it on here 😅 and oh yes, I collect any variation of books, VHS, DVDs, blu rays, video games, whatever. This collection is mostly from thrift stores
@@Paraspectre that is super sweet. Nothing better than a collection you love,,, and didn’t have to pay crazy prices for. Also can’t speak for everyone, but I kind of just like watching any vid that is someone talking about something they like.
I just released a video on my channel of me reacting to this video while I was streaming. This video is fantastic and the creator does phenomenal work!
They’re definitely accessible from the boxes in the lab, but am I wrong about them being usable in the stadium and such? We had plenty of Mew as you can see in the video but I don’t think we ever had Celebi
Man, the prices on Stadium 2 have shot up a lot since I bought my copy a couple of years ago. Comparing Stadium 1 and 2 is pretty hard for me personally. I have much more of a nostalgic connection to the first Stadium, but it terms of what's actually the better game, it's probably Stadium 2. As far as the minigames go though, I enjoy both games equally. Yeah, there's more depth to most of the Stadium 2 minigames, but I also really enjoy the simplicity of Stadium 1's. Bringing out either game during a party is bound to end up being a good time regardless.
That Steelix/Sentret fight is pretty lopsided as long as the rodent knows surf

I remember my parents bought the US Stadium 2 and it came with a poster of 249 excluding Mew and Celebi, but Nintendo have always disliked people using glitches since RBY; they even tried telling people just encountering Missing No. could ruin your save file to discourage it 😁
These are always really good and informative. I love these videos
Thank you for watching! These always end up being longer than I intend them to be
@@Paraspectre that's why I love them. I absolutely love long videos
Much appreciated! There is plenty more to come
251 is ‘nearly’ 250, technically speaking…
mew and celebi are locked and require them to be unlocked on the cart to use so its 249 which is nearly 250
Hitmontop was a true beyblade
I spent so much time playing Stadium 2 back in the day, specially playing minigames with my younger sister and being thoroughly humiliated in the gym leader castle.
Some of these mini games are better than a large number of Mario Party games.
Theyre BEASTS not dogs!!!
I'm guessing Nintendo just assumed every kid who got this already had Stadium 1, and thus already had a transfer pak. At least, that's how it was with me.
Dux the farfetched is a school yard legend
Dux lives 🤘🏻
Im glad im not the only one who loves the ghost riding the whip meme from Cosmonaut's channel
Didn't PBG originate it?
Makes me laugh every time he uses it
Uh oh.. I only know it through CVH’s channel
So I guess I was today years old when I found out Pokemon Stadium has a PNG of the Hey you Pikachu 64 in the delibird game
Haha yeah, I didn’t really mention that but it’s there. It’s kind of a memorable system now
*Shows box art*
"Now let's play the actual game"
*Boots up emulator*
Jokes aside, I unapologetically love the Stadium games. And the guides on Earl's Academy are surprisingly in-depth. Doesn't quite get to Bulbapedia levels of information, but it still goes into stuff like STAB and Physical/Special.
Also I was pretty good at Egg Emergency, not satisfied with perfect i liked to see how many consecutive perfects I could get
Haha I DID just purchase a capture card, so I may not only use emulation from now on. But so far, yeah, that’s pretty funny
cool video and channel. feels very relatable and interpersonal. keep it up.
Thank you for checking these out!
The reason why gen 2 batteries die more often is because they use it for a clock AND the save file, original RBY is just the save file
This is true. I made my own tool just for taking the screws off for this occasion.
That’s pretty funny. I mean I almost look back more fondly on the mini games than the actual stadium stuff. And they were just additional side stuff.
Unlocking the speed up feature in this game definitely needlessly more complicated and more work.
I already had the Dodrio Game Boy, so I forgot what had to be done. I liked it and didn’t like it at the same time
I hated the fact that you couldn't use the speedup for the gen 2 games until after you beat the elite four and lance in game.
6:59 ohmg! Now I know why The living dex videos loves Sentret.
Oh maaaan I have been waiting for this. Always makes my day when I see a new Paraspective pop up in my notifications.
Thank you! I’ve also been looking forward to making this one. Lots of nostalgia with Stadium 2.
@@Paraspectre what other games are you looking forward to covering in this series?
I know practically nothing about any of the mystery dungeon games, so probably those
I'm sure you didn't even know that you can check with poke stadium 2 if you have shiny pokemon in the eggs that you got in GBC games just saying this info is more useful for the shiny hunters
Honestly, if you want to keep those pokemon, you should transfer them to the n64 cart and replace the battery. The fact your red still has battery is astonishing and it's partly why it took so many attempts to get it to register for the pak check
This is a very good point. It’s just a matter of time until they go away. I have replaced the battery in my Silver version already
Pokemon Stadium 2 is the best of the duology. (trilogy in Japan)
I wonder if Stadium Zero is even worth playing with these other two
I used to love this game as a kid i remember having a 64 I didn’t play this game enough
I think it’s a must own N64 game, personally
Cool video! :) thank you
Awwwww, yeah! The nostalgia is real. X3 Especially with little cup. Which fun fact: you can play RBY little cup. It's freaking awesome! They allow all lvl up moves. I love using Drowzee leads, with a Pidgey or Spearow assist. For Mirror move shenanigans. :3
I remember really enjoying the different cups in this. They’re different enough to match what you’re in the mood for
Stadium 2 is the Sam and Max Hit the Road of the Poké franchise
wow an OG pokemaniac who never played later generations? I’d pay to see you do a let’s play of some of the gens you missed. That’s a rare perspective!
Oh I’ve played every generation! I only meant I didn’t play Gen 3 or 4 at release
I hope I'm not the only one who noticed 19:21
The games eventually do lose their game saves. Might want to invest in hardware to do backup saves of them.
This is true. I’ve been lucky with my Gen 1 carts
Before Crystal was released, the only way you learned about its existence was through the Trainer School. Completing it unlocks the extended library, including Crystal exclusives.
Ahh interesting! Maybe I underestimated ol Earl
I know your next challenge: go through the gym leader challenge with team fraiser on Pokémon Stadium 2!
#teamfrasier. Yes.
I learned all the secret mechanics from Earl!
I guess I know what I played the most. lol
This vid made me want to replay it.
Good times.
I wish I kept my Stadium 1, but yeah I agree. Those were good times
Crazy, I found my Gold & Silver, N64, ps2, GTA 3, Street Crimes L.A. I still haven't played gen 3
What? No mention of how the player's Girafarig can be used in the Furret Mini-game? It's the silliest thing ever.
I actually didn’t know about this 😅 I forgot which Pokémon can be substituted in
I don't think it's nostalgia to rate pkmn stadium 2 higher than the first one.
I agree, I think Stadium 2 is an improvement all around. But I haven’t really played Stadium 1 in 20+ years aside from making this video
You get a like and sub for the intro alone
That was made by a guy who goes by BrokenVHS. I love it as well
We need Nintendo to port the stadium games to the switch.
they already announced this
If only it was March 2001.
Good video
I wish those transfer paks weren't so damn flimsy. I was surprised your still worked, tbh. Mine quit on me before this game came out, and I could never find one for sale on its own so I always assumed I had to find a new copy of Stadium 1 to find a new one, and the base game was nearly unplayable without one because the rentals all had intentionally bad movesets. Had a great time with the minigames though.
What’s funny is that when I set up my gag in the video where it wouldn’t work, it worked fine on my first two attempts 😅. So I had to try and make it give me the error message
8:14 did you recorded this using real hardware with the expansion pak ? It looks way smoother than playing without the expansion
Emulator
@@HistoryandReviews ohhhh gotcha ! the lack of lag got my attention hahaha thx
Dang poor Earl 🤣
Bro we both got black Kia Optimas
I’ve had very few problems with it
Sadly my Pokémon Red and Yellow both have dead batteries now.
Oh nooo. I’ve lucked out I guess. All four of my Gen 1 cartridges still work.
A Parasect-ive
Gotta get a James Bond tour. That is a pretty beefy collection of editions. Do you collect the old novels as well?
I didn’t think many would care to see it on here 😅 and oh yes, I collect any variation of books, VHS, DVDs, blu rays, video games, whatever. This collection is mostly from thrift stores
@@Paraspectre that is super sweet. Nothing better than a collection you love,,, and didn’t have to pay crazy prices for.
Also can’t speak for everyone, but I kind of just like watching any vid that is someone talking about something they like.
I wonder what's harder and more frustrating. Stadium 2 with rentals or Stadium Kaizo
Haha now you’re onto something…
waht rom are you using to have mewtwo as a rentel
I honestly don’t remember now haha
I just released a video on my channel of me reacting to this video while I was streaming. This video is fantastic and the creator does phenomenal work!
I would swap around Snap and Stadium 2 in terms of ranking N64 Pokemon games.
Would you say your brother knows eggs-actly what you mean?
Woah woah, let’s take it (over) easy now.
As a side note, Pokemon 3 was definitely the best movie.
Haha I saw it once. I don’t remember much about it. A little girl with a pet Entei or something?
I love this series.
I miss my N64. This was a great game. Gen 2 is the best.
My copies of Red and Blue have dead batteries.
Yeah it seems to be very hit or miss if those Gen 1 copies still work
Get the soldering iron ready to do a battery swap
I thought stadium 2 was missing mew and celeby
They’re definitely accessible from the boxes in the lab, but am I wrong about them being usable in the stadium and such? We had plenty of Mew as you can see in the video but I don’t think we ever had Celebi
I just remember there being around 249 in the rental box
That’s probably absolutely true. I didn’t actually check
Agreed, they’re pretty similar experiences. I just remember abandoning Stadium 1 entirely once 2 came out. I don’t have my copy anymore even
