  • Willie B of Two Guys Garage helps you understand how to choose trailer tires. Why you should pick a radial trailer tire or a bias ply trailer tire. Learn how each trailer tire is constructed so you can pick the best tire for your trailer.
The tires on your trailer are just as important as the vehicle you pull your trailer with. Trailer tires are built to carry heavier loads, reduce rolling resistance, and cut down on trailer sway. You can choose either a radial or bias ply tire for your trailer. But how do you know which is the right choice for your trailering needs?
Radial trailer tires are a good choice for hauling over long distances. They’re constructed with rubber-coated steel cables running at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel, for carrying heavy loads. Radial tires stay cooler on long hauls, resist flat spots, and have less rolling resistance to help with fuel efficiency. Radial trailer tires also have a longer tread life than a bias ply tire.
Bias ply tires are often preferred by customers hauling heavy loads shorter distances, and in off-pavement use. Bias ply trailer tires are constructed with layers of nylon textile cords placed on top of each other at 30-degree angles, to stiffen the sidewall. Bias ply tires could be a suitable choice for your construction or utility trailer. Because they have a shorter tread life, bias ply tires are often less expensive than radial tires, so they may be a more cost-efficient choice if you’re not traveling long distances with your trailer.
Tires-easy has a full range of radial and bias ply tires with unbeatable pricing. If you have questions, our Customer Service team has over 45 years of collective tire knowledge and are happy to assist you.

I've had 2 flat tires on our trailer in 40 years of hauling a boat. Both were radial tires. I use only bias because I think both flats were caused by steel belt separating from the rubber.

So your saying bias tires suck and radial tires are the way to go

Not at all! Bias ply tries are good for shorter distances, heavy loads, less frequent miles driven, and where heat build up is not an issue. Many farm implements utilize bias ply and this is the correct tire for them. When hauling something like a travel trailer or horse trailer, radial is the better choice. Hope that helped!

Then why does U- haul use bias on the trailers?

While we cannot tell you for sure why UHaul uses bias ply tires, if that is their policy. Our guess would be they have a specific manufacturer they work with to meet their tires needs, and it is tied to cost factor.
