It's all relative. What I meant is that what they have is by no means unattainable to most regular people and most of it can be found in typical music stores. It's not like we're talking recording a Dumble with a U67 through a Neve desk. Plenty of bands have done that and not sounded half as well put together as this.

He didn't actually mix and master that record. That's marketing BS to make them seem relatable, "this could be you." Check the credits. The mixing and mastering was done by pros. No one will like the truth, though. The mythology is too fun.

(Almost) no one's going to mix and master their own record, let alone a producer. That's not their job. What he's showing is how he and Billie captured and fostered their creativity, not how a complete record was made.
@@KeithShelley1 That's not how this is being presented. They're not saying, "Can you believe these kids wrote a song at home?" The promotion is, "Album of the Year, recorded at home on 'prosumer' equipment available at any Guitar Center!" It's nonsense.
The real MVP is their parents... Sleeping on a futon in the living room... Making sure they were exposed to all of those instruments growing up... Their mom even taught them how to write songs at a very young age

Finneas has his place at the table. Everyone that has followed Billie's career knows of Finneas' role. It was NOT a secondary role by any means. Billie and Finneas are collaborative artists bringing different elements to the mix, a mix that garnered Billie the initial adulation/stardom if you will. And now Finneas is getting the attention warranted by his talents, his abilities as a producer, the singer of harmonies to Billies' songs, the guitarist and keyboardist on stage with her. What a pair. What a gifted pair of young artists/performers. Maggie Baird and Patrick O'Connell - their parents - are to be commended for nurturing such talents, such gifts in the children. Bravo! Well done! Thank you.

Producers in general don't get enough credit imo. You can have the best recording gear in the world, but it almost doesn't matter if your producer doesn't know what they're doing. On the flipside, average quality recording gear can sound amazing with a proper mix!
@@troublesomesheep I mean a producer is a lot more than just a sound engineer who does mixing/mastering, but yeah. Especially in pop, usually the producers are the ones writing all the songs as well. But again, if they wanted to put their faces out there I'm sure they could.

I was curious, so i went to the Grammy page right to the artist feature: In detail they both won the 3 Grammys for best song, record, album and Billie won best pop vocal album and best new artist and Finneas won best engineered album and producer of the year. Which makes it 3 the same price and 2 individual price and therefore 10 Grammys in total.

Her parents are typical actors, meaning unemployed most of the time, with short acting jobs, voice overs, additional voice recording, etc. Only a tiny fraction of actors can support themselves through acting alone.
Her father worked as a handymam and construction worker, while her mother also got paid for hosting home schooling crafts meetings at home and giving lessons in songwriting, trapeze, improv, etc.
Not poor, but not with much spare cash. They live in a low-income and crime-prone part of North-East LA, all they could afford, a tiny 12,000 square ft. Bungalow-style 2 bedroom house. Billie had to work in a stable during the summers to afford horse-riding classes.
@@knowhere60 exactly. only like 1% of actors work in hollywood. sure, they live in LA, but that doesn't make it any easier to get those roles. most actors around the world work in theaters of varying sizes, and even having a contract in one is lucky. the competition is so tough and I don't think many people realize what it takes to actually support yourself as an actor.

Respect! I ran a studio for 10 years out of my 2 bedroom apartment in the Seattle area. Produced 200+ artists and 10k songs. I can relate to a lot of what he is saying. We live in a great time for music and exploration.
People don't usually acknowledge the privilege that is for an artist to be born in LA, so it's really cool that he mentions it

Broxine LA has the most street corners of any state in California implemented into its infrastructure. Therefore, there are many more spaces and opportunities for artists to play in street corners and out in public. By doing so, record label producers usually wander around LA and observe these folk one by one handing out record labels to those they like. That’s how Billie and Finneas were noticed. To this day, every street corner in LA has a different act/performance.

He's a great singer and doesn't need to rely on anyone's vocals. They're both talented vocalists and you don't need to say one of them is any less of an artist than the other one.

Guy is only 22 and produces like a pro studio with pro team and pro equipment in his bedroom. Genius mastermind. Made his sister hit n1 song. Meanwhile I cant even give christmas gifts to my sisters.
There's a lot of producers that have done what he's doing before him. Grammy or not He's nothing different. But he got talent to make things happen in his own way.

Of course in 10years of hard work or more he ,now at 22 makes banger. but also there are a lot of talented producers out there who were not so lucky to have any kind of support Finneas had/has and everyone sleeps on them or doesn't even know about them. Don't wanna blame Billie, but as a vocalist, you can record vocals at a studio in 15 minutes, only because you got the voice. But as a producer, there is such an effort and time flowing in the creative process of building a song...
Finneas is really talented and the fact that they record in their bedroom makes it really tangible that you can have success without stepping out of your comfort zone, without getting too professional. I really like that...

You can tell that they are genuine musicians with deep souls. They are truly gifted and amazing artists.

I don’t get why people keep bringing up Billie’s financial status and how her parents bought her into fame. Clearly from this video they weren’t living the glamours LA life as some people pin point it out as. Yeah her parents were actors, but they weren’t successful enough to make it into mainstream which is what people forget. There is a thing called working actors who aren’t living lush, extravagant lives.
Becky T Finneas has acted in some legit stuff. They have connections most musicians do not. That doesn’t matter too much anyway though. Connections only get you in the door. Gotta make great songs to last.
Finneas himself has worked hard and got himself opportunities on some pretty big projects such as glee, bad teacher etc. The parents however haven’t been in anything too notable. Which isn’t a bad thing, I mean they still could support their kids. I think people hear Billie talking about her spending at 13/14 and forget she was making music then. Or that she’s from LA and automatically assume she has connections. I mean maybe she does but at this point both her and her brothers talent stands for itself to me.
And even if they were so entitled who cares talent is talent money doesn’t buy it
Finneas was Alastair on Glee. Her mom was on X Files, and Mass Effect. Not to mention countless more things. They were very connected.

I stumbled on this video on accident the day it posted, and just sat dumbfounded while watching this brilliant young man do incredible things with the simplest of instruments and equipment.
I totally get the size and feel of the house because both of my parents grew up in Eagle Rock and Highland Park in little houses just like the O'Connell's.
Needless to say I fell in love with Finneas immediately and Billie the minute I heard her. I get teary eyed when I think of how fun and exciting their concert was in April. I took my teen daughter and it was her first concert.
The love I have for this family is immense. I think Finneas will be remembered as one of the best songwriters of all time. 💗💚😊

Both their parents are in the movie industry and are very well connected. These two are obviously very talented, but it's not talent alone that got them where they are. Billie also partnered with Chanel to create her image before she ever released a song. Again, not to take anything away from their talent and hard work. Just important to see the complete picture, especially if you are an aspiring artist.
