  • We've already posted 1950s-vintage video programs of Twin Cities streetcars on the Como-Harriet, University Avenue and Inter-campus lines. This video covers the rest of the streetcar system, some 13 lines, as well as the carbarns and support facilities.

Marvelous tutorial on a system that was taken away too soon. I enjoyed the narration very much. I did ride PCC’s in. Mexico D F in 1958. Hopefully one of yours.

6:11 That Yellow taxi there, and another that will come around a corner, is no accident: just in front of the streetcar at this point is the old Yellow Taxi Co. of Minneapolis garage, at 100 2nd St NE.

This breaks my heart. I was lucky enough to grow up at the part where it's still running. Minneapolis did not do a good job of preserving its history. Also just by the way the trolley didn't go through 43rd and Upton. I don't know who made that up. Upton is on the other side of Queen Avenue from the tracks.

It ran parallel between 43rd & 44th street and crossed over Upton Ave. If you look at Google maps, or visit in person where the Car Barn is today, you can see the tracks running parallel with Queen Ave. At the point of the Car Barn, where tracks terminate today, it had once turned west along this route heading to both Xerxes and France Ave.
The 1946 Street Car map, on the Minnesota Street Car Museum's website, also show this westward turn meeting with France and Xerxes. In fact, on the Linden Hills Ave. bridge above the Car Barn, attached to the pedestrian fence is a black and white photo showing a street car at that exact location making this westward turn.
It's very fascinating that this vast network used to exist. You are certainly right that the history preservation of not just this but so many other things wasn't important until recently. It is sad.

When I was growing up, some of the tracks were still in the roads. It's a shame that I never got to ride the streetcars. (Except maybe when I was still a baby.)

I lived in Minneapolis beginning when I was 10 and rode those streetcars a lot. My grandparents lived in Robbinsdale on Beard Ave north. Had my first date at the Terrace Theater which was close by. Fine memories there !

It is my opinion that the current trolley line needs to get extended under the Queen Avenue Bridge Through the Alley into downtown Linden Hills. Can you imagine going to a concert at the Bandshell and then hopping on a trolley into downtown Linden Hills where you can catch a bite to eat. Or vice versa Park in Linden Hills and use the trolley to get to the Bandshell. Would be a massive source of Revenue and would bring a lot of Tourism. Who's ready to sign the petition.

My dad said he was on the cover of the Star Tribune on the last streetcar, hoping to see that here never looked it up to see if it's online, quite a scam they pulled off on Minneapolis

I remember my great-grandfather talking about him taking the streetcar out to Lake Phalen with his shotgun and hunting dog...
