As a MEGA Roller Coaster enthusiast, I ALWAYS prefer the back seat ESPECIALLY when going over the first drop! You get the most airtime and the BEST "sinking/weightless feeling". I LOVE IT!
My favorite coaster is The Viper at Six Flags Great America. An oldie but goodie. The drops are designed so well! Headed to the park for my birthday today, I'm so excited! 🥳
Tom Scott did an entire episode about rollercoasters and one thing they mentioned thats worth its own tweet reply to the history of rollercoasters is the Flip-Flap Railway which was an attempt to do a loop-de-loop rollercoaster after the Switchback Railway proved you can make rollercoasters. However, the Flip-Flap Railway did not succeed well because the engineers were not physicists and thus... the ride was very uncomfortable for everyone involved
The US manufacturers are leading in wooden rollercoasters (I’m counting RMC in there), but the Europeans are leading by far in the steel category. It’s always fun, when you are asked in an US amusement park „do you have rollercoasters in Europe?“ and you need to explain to them, that all their favorite rides are made by European companies.

Slight correction: Kingda Ka has the record for the fastest and tallest currently operating roller coaster. Formula Rossa at Ferrari World (which has been down for months) was the actual record holder for fastest roller coaster ever in the world, while Falcon's Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya will beat out both coasters for both records by a massive margin when it opens next year.
Literally came here to find this comment lol. Somehow though I didn’t realize Formula Rossa has been down. Who knows maybe he knows something we don’t 😂
Yes formula rossa is the fastest roller coaster but since it is currently sbno, I am unsure if it counts right now towards the record especially if they choose to remove it

4:45 That cross-section of wooden track is fascinating. I never realized that the wooden frame of the coaster extends all the way into the actual track, with the only metal being the running steel plates along the wood surfaces. I need to know... how is that joinery achieved? Everything in that little bit of cross-section appears adhered, but surely it is all bolted together as well in the actual longer segments. I'm really curious now to inspect a real track up close.
8:51 fellow nerd here; need to know your thoughts on the "numbers" for Millennium Force - the most enjoyable coaster on planet earth (okay, yes I'm biased).
"I think rides like Kingda Ka are gonna last a long time in the future" (1.5 months later it's announced they're getting rid of it) That didn't age well at all 😭
The oldest continuously operating roller coaster in the country is located near me at Seabreeze Amusement Park. Its called the Jack Rabbit. Opened in 1920.
Australia's oldest one opened in 1912 & still has an operator on board every ride to operate it's breaks, cause there were no automatic breaks back then, so operator stands in the back car controlling them
I love that my younger years of coaster research and obsession meant that I already knew the answers to most of these questions. lol I haven't ridden nearly as many coaster as I'd like, but I used to research them a LOT, definitely something I'm super fascinated by. :D
I played roller coaster tycoon growing up and still do. I got really crazy into ride building and you have to learn all that stuff. It’s crazy how accurate that game is
I play a coaster enthusiast on the Internet but I only have 31 "creds", the result of a mostly coaster-phobic youth and interest rekindled in middle age when I don't have the physical stamina or the opportunity to ride too many of these things. Hardcore coaster enthusiasts have often ridden hundreds of them, but it's an expensive and time--consuming hobby and riding them *all* can involve being a glutton for punishment.
6:57 KUMBA at Busch Gardens Tampa has always been a favorite. Such a fun ride and super exciting, always come off that one wanting to go another couple rounds, and since it’s in the back of the park you can usually do that without a long wait. Oh and the old Dueling Dragons, rest in peace. That was at Islands of Adventure. But that was a long wait but was a super cool waiting line

5:25 Superman at Six Flags Great America is my all time favorite coaster; you sit down to strap in, then they tilt you up before take off. That ascent trying not to look down is super intimidating the first time but pure fun, try to put your arms out on that one!!
One of my favorite parts of an old school coaster is the slow, noisy climb up the first hill. Kinda like the Magnum XL at Cedar Point back in the early 90’s.
The beast is an AMAZING ride. Shooting seemingly into the ground, the changes in speed. The weightless heights, the hard turns. Plus it's like 5 minutes long and the line always moves quickly. And when you take the ride at night. Just perfection.
I've ridden Kingda Ka, and it's absolutely insane. The acceleration feels like a sci-fi warp drive, and the brief view at the top is incredible. Also, the coolest part of it is that there was a drop tower attached to it, which went almost to the top - a 400ft drop tower! That was similarly as exciting, as it's a really long fall!
I saw and talked with Korey and the Gravity Group company at the IAAPA expo last November. It's super amazing what they're doing in the roller coaster business. PLUS, Korey is a Michigan Tech alumni and that's where I'm currently getting my bachelor's degree in Materials engineering.

The Kennywood shoutout made my lil PA heart flutter. Love that park & its wooden coasters. The Jackrabbit has a series of drops that does that 0g feeling. Iconic.
To people saying that he's wrong and Formula Rossa is the fastest roller coaster: Formula Rossa has been closed since January and it is unknown whether it will reopen. So Kingda Ka is the fastest currently operating roller coaster.

Hey Korey! I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I decided to go to Oktoberfest today to ride the Olympia Looping after you said it was on your bucket list. It was the first time I have every traveled to a roller coaster and rode it alone, so thank you for getting me outside of my comfort zone. I hope you get to experience it one day!
I love seeing people who are passionate about their jobs and talking about them.
I'm an electrician and the closest I'll get to doing this is teaching at the union school here. I love talking about it
As a MEGA Roller Coaster enthusiast, I ALWAYS prefer the back seat ESPECIALLY when going over the first drop! You get the most airtime and the BEST "sinking/weightless feeling". I LOVE IT!
Rollercoaster Tycoon gang here 🤘😎🎢
Especially when I leave the track detached and they fly out 😂
Ayo.!!! 😎👋🏼
No limits 2 for me lol planet coasters alright too but I like nodes and line system rather than track pieces building. I’m a CAD guy tho

My favorite coaster is The Viper at Six Flags Great America. An oldie but goodie. The drops are designed so well! Headed to the park for my birthday today, I'm so excited! 🥳
You need to travel more. Visit Mt. Olympus in the Dells for Hades 360 or Boss and American Thunder in St. Louis.
@@tc6818 I've ridden coasters all over the country and The Viper is still my favorite. To each his own. ☺️👍🏽

However, the Flip-Flap Railway did not succeed well because the engineers were not physicists and thus... the ride was very uncomfortable for everyone involved
never stop making these!!
10:12 I love the Thunderbolt at Kennywood!!! My favorite coaster of all time
The US manufacturers are leading in wooden rollercoasters (I’m counting RMC in there), but the Europeans are leading by far in the steel category. It’s always fun, when you are asked in an US amusement park „do you have rollercoasters in Europe?“ and you need to explain to them, that all their favorite rides are made by European companies.
What even are some US steel coaster manufacturers besides RMC kinda

Slight correction: Kingda Ka has the record for the fastest and tallest currently operating roller coaster. Formula Rossa at Ferrari World (which has been down for months) was the actual record holder for fastest roller coaster ever in the world, while Falcon's Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya will beat out both coasters for both records by a massive margin when it opens next year.
Literally came here to find this comment lol. Somehow though I didn’t realize Formula Rossa has been down. Who knows maybe he knows something we don’t 😂
There is nothing to correct. He says “currently.”
So many know-it-all thusies in the comments… 🙄
@@Becausing Let’s be real though the answer is Formula Rossa
RIP Formula Rossa
Yes formula rossa is the fastest roller coaster but since it is currently sbno, I am unsure if it counts right now towards the record especially if they choose to remove it
why would you waste an opportunity to ask an expert or really anyone for that matter something that is really easy to google? like the tallest or the fastest something
Why can’t someone just do what they want to do without judgment? Just watch the video man.
Dang I didn’t know Topher Grace was so knowledgeable about roller coasters. Also he looks like he’s put on some years since I last saw him
Thank you future Topher Grace!
!!! I knew he looked familiar
Yes! He sounds and looks just like him. It's like Eric Foreman in an old man getup
I didn't even register this, but now it's impossible not to hear it.
I wasn’t even thinking about whether he looked or sounded like anyone while scrolling through the comments, but now that I’ve read it I cannot unsee it lol
The VelociCoaster is the best coaster I have ever been on. It's amazing. Hagrid's is also a ton of fun.
Just finished a trip to Universal Orlando and went on Velocicoaster so many times! Incredible.
Right state, wrong park. Hour west Iron Gwazi reigns supreme

8:51 fellow nerd here; need to know your thoughts on the "numbers" for Millennium Force - the most enjoyable coaster on planet earth (okay, yes I'm biased).
This was cool! I didn't even know I had questions about roller coasters, lol
"I think rides like Kingda Ka are gonna last a long time in the future"
(1.5 months later it's announced they're getting rid of it)
That didn't age well at all 😭
The oldest continuously operating roller coaster in the country is located near me at Seabreeze Amusement Park.
Oh man! Dueling Dragons! That use to be my mom's favorite ride but I was too small last time we were at islands of adventure... I didn't realize it was gone! I always wanted to try it. R.I.P.
@@hotarubinariko I haven’t been in probably 14yrs, so a long time but I’m pretty positive it’s Hagrids Motorbike Adventure now, the one he mentioned in this video.
@@Usiris23 Oh really? That's funny I rode that one while visiting my sister a few years back and had no idea. Seems very different but it's possible. That one is fun, more in the style of spiderman than the hulk.
Yessss I have such fond memories of Dueling Dragons rip
I went to Islands of Adventure with my husband and daughter and the only coaster we got to ride was Dueling Dragons, because it later rained and a lot of the others shut down. Did DD twice in a row. (Had to do Fire AND Ice.) Regretted that, but not the ride as a whole. Was great fun.
5:25 Superman at Six Flags Great America is my all time favorite coaster; you sit down to strap in, then they tilt you up before take off. That ascent trying not to look down is super intimidating the first time but pure fun, try to put your arms out on that one!!
Kingda ka is such an awesome roller coaster. Only problem is it’s soo short! Let us go around another time lol. Love 6 flags.
I think if you're lucky it doesn't make the top and you get launched again
Great Adventure has a really nice collection of coasters.
One of my favorite parts of an old school coaster is the slow, noisy climb up the first hill. Kinda like the Magnum XL at Cedar Point back in the early 90’s.
When I worked at an Amusement Park as a Rides Operator, I would tell people that the Coaster stayed on the track with Magnets. 😜
The beast is an AMAZING ride. Shooting seemingly into the ground, the changes in speed. The weightless heights, the hard turns. Plus it's like 5 minutes long and the line always moves quickly. And when you take the ride at night. Just perfection.

Yea I was like, hey! A coaster I’ve actually ridden!

@Coaster101 Wasnt even thinking of that cuz its not a Gravity Group....but they are the remnants of CCI so it checks
14:04 block zones are also meant in case the ride needs to be shut down for an emergency, the cars on the track do not crash into each other
South African here and that ride is called Tower of Terror and I've never been so scared of a ride in my life.
I saw and talked with Korey and the Gravity Group company at the IAAPA expo last November. It's super amazing what they're doing in the roller coaster business. PLUS, Korey is a Michigan Tech alumni and that's where I'm currently getting my bachelor's degree in Materials engineering.
4:40 _What's better old school wood or modern metal?_
*Laughs in Steel Vengeance*
*_Why not both?!_*
Cedar Point Amusement Park's wooden coaster Mean Streak got converted into Steel Vengeance.
Olympia is amazing, it was set up in my city around 10 years ago. Expensive to ride, but it's so worth it. Yes, it's portable, but there are very few stationed roller coasters that have 5 loopings! Makes you appreciate it so much more.

How the heck did that support pillar huge crack get missed at Carowinds Amusement Park? That was wild.
Glad you mentioned Kennywood! Been there many times and I will say the thunderbolt is quite fun to go on!
I'm old enough to remember when the New York Times ranked the Thunderbolt as the #1 roller coaster in the U.S. The Racer, not so much.
@ yeah the racer is alright I definitely preferred the thunderbolt, even though I honestly don’t mind if a coaster is wooden or not

He's definitely asking about Topper Track. Personally I consider a coaster like Outlaw Run at SDC to be a wooden coaster.
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv I think it's interesting that RMC seems to have kind of given up on Topper Track. To the point of sometimes replacing it with entirely steel I-Box track on existing rides.
