Tom Scott did an entire episode about rollercoasters and one thing they mentioned thats worth its own tweet reply to the history of rollercoasters is the Flip-Flap Railway which was an attempt to do a loop-de-loop rollercoaster after the Switchback Railway proved you can make rollercoasters. However, the Flip-Flap Railway did not succeed well because the engineers were not physicists and thus... the ride was very uncomfortable for everyone involved
The US manufacturers are leading in wooden rollercoasters (I’m counting RMC in there), but the Europeans are leading by far in the steel category. It’s always fun, when you are asked in an US amusement park „do you have rollercoasters in Europe?“ and you need to explain to them, that all their favorite rides are made by European companies.

Hardcore coaster enthusiasts have often ridden hundreds of them, but it's an expensive and time--consuming hobby and riding them *all* can involve being a glutton for punishment.
11:08 super cool to hear him say this. I rode this in November of 2023 with my gf, not realising at the time that it is the largest transportable rollercoaster in the world! They tend to bring it in for London's Winter Wonderland, as well as a bunch of other neat rides
@@AdamSmith-gs2dv I think it's interesting that RMC seems to have kind of given up on Topper Track. To the point of sometimes replacing it with entirely steel I-Box track on existing rides. It was an interesting idea, to semantically push the limit of what is a wooden coaster, but I guess steel I-Box is less trouble.
8:51 fellow nerd here; need to know your thoughts on the "numbers" for Millennium Force - the most enjoyable coaster on planet earth (okay, yes I'm biased).
The oldest continuously operating roller coaster in the country is located near me at Seabreeze Amusement Park. Its called the Jack Rabbit. Opened in 1920.
Australia's oldest one opened in 1912 & still has an operator on board every ride to operate it's breaks, cause there were no automatic breaks back then, so operator stands in the back car controlling them
I saw and talked with Korey and the Gravity Group company at the IAAPA expo last November. It's super amazing what they're doing in the roller coaster business. PLUS, Korey is a Michigan Tech alumni and that's where I'm currently getting my bachelor's degree in Materials engineering.
6:57 KUMBA at Busch Gardens Tampa has always been a favorite. Such a fun ride and super exciting, always come off that one wanting to go another couple rounds, and since it’s in the back of the park you can usually do that without a long wait. Im pretty sure this guy is part of the gravity group. They make awesome wooden coasters! They also retracked the beast At kings island for the spring conference they did a presentation about there wooden coasters
One of my favorite parts of an old school coaster is the slow, noisy climb up the first hill. Kinda like the Magnum XL at Cedar Point back in the early 90’s.
6:44 “that’s like the Colonel’s *7* herbs and spices” I read through the comments expecting someone to point out that’s KFC has a secret recipe of *11* herbs and spices. Given how nitpicking this audience is, I really thought someone would have pointed this out already!
Some people would consider it SBNO, but since it had a definite closure announcement others could also argue that it's out of the running. I think it's just a matter of opinion and how you classify it.
The Beast is a beast for sure. I love that ride, but it's been years since I've conquered it. Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio has some of the best wood roller coasters including The Gemini which is a racer roller coaster. We would split between the red car and the blue car to see who would win. Well, Korey showed up in the Great Escape, Coaster Studios video today, and now on this one. So 2 different youtube videos with gravity group goodness in one day!
1:19 This answer should have been reviewed by a physicist, I doubt it was. It doesn't apply to steady drops or loops. We don't experience weight in the first place, what we actually experience what we sit down is not our weight pushing downward, but the surface pushing us back upward, and that feeling is concentrated on where we're making contact with that surface, even though our weight is centered in our lower stomach. What we call the feeling of weightlessness is when that upward push gets weaker or disappears completely. When a carriage falls down a steep, steady drop, accelerating under its own weight, that is when riders experience the most weightlessness, because the carriage stops exerting that upward force on them. A similar, though generally weaker sensation of this is felt in loops as the carriage crosses the apex. The whole centripetal acceleration explanation is a special case of this explanation, and _only_ applies to going over hill crests, which wasn't in the original question to begin with.
See the right videos, not clickbaitey ones that don’t know what they’re talking about. I recommend Coaster College. Also, 99% of ride failures is actually due to human error, not a machine malfunction.

Formula Rossa at Ferrari World (which has been down for months) was the actual record holder for fastest roller coaster ever in the world, while Falcon's Flight at Six Flags Qiddiya will beat out both coasters for both records by a massive margin when it opens next year.
Literally came here to find this comment lol. Somehow though I didn’t realize Formula Rossa has been down. Who knows maybe he knows something we don’t 😂
There is nothing to correct. He says “currently.”
So many know-it-all thusies in the comments… 🙄

Yes formula rossa is the fastest roller coaster but since it is currently sbno, I am unsure if it counts right now towards the record especially if they choose to remove it
As a MEGA Roller Coaster enthusiast, I ALWAYS prefer the back seat ESPECIALLY when going over the first drop! You get the most airtime and the BEST "sinking/weightless feeling". I LOVE IT!
Dang I didn’t know Topher Grace was so knowledgeable about roller coasters. Also he looks like he’s put on some years since I last saw him
Thank you future Topher Grace!
!!! I knew he looked familiar
Yes! He sounds and looks just like him. It's like Eric Foreman in an old man getup
I didn't even register this, but now it's impossible not to hear it.
I wasn’t even thinking about whether he looked or sounded like anyone while scrolling through the comments, but now that I’ve read it I cannot unsee it lol
Awesome video! This man has really kept the topics on track!
never stop making these!!
5:25 Superman at Six Flags Great America is my all time favorite coaster; you sit down to strap in, then they tilt you up before take off. That ascent trying not to look down is super intimidating the first time but pure fun, try to put your arms out on that one!!
“To me, the measure of succes is not seeing how many people are running towards the trashcan puking”, is like saying “When a guest at a themepark is giving you a hard time, just pick him up with a giant set of tweezers and drop him in the nearest body of water”

This was one of the best support videos ever. Such a chill guy.
My favorite coaster is The Viper at Six Flags Great America. An oldie but goodie. The drops are designed so well! Headed to the park for my birthday today, I'm so excited! 🥳
You need to travel more. Visit Mt. Olympus in the Dells for Hades 360 or Boss and American Thunder in St. Louis.

I would watch this forever. This is so interesting. I love the way he explains everything. He's so cool.
What even are some US steel coaster manufacturers besides RMC kinda

The Kennywood shoutout made my lil PA heart flutter. Love that park & its wooden coasters. The Jackrabbit has a series of drops that does that 0g feeling. Iconic.
This was cool! I didn't even know I had questions about roller coasters, lol
Absolutely loved this episode as a rollercoaster junkie! A part two would be great in the future!
I love that my younger years of coaster research and obsession meant that I already knew the answers to most of these questions. lol I haven't ridden nearly as many coaster as I'd like, but I used to research them a LOT, definitely something I'm super fascinated by. :D
I played roller coaster tycoon growing up and still do. I got really crazy into ride building and you have to learn all that stuff. It’s crazy how accurate that game is
I play a coaster enthusiast on the Internet but I only have 31 "creds", the result of a mostly coaster-phobic youth and interest rekindled in middle age when I don't have the physical stamina or the opportunity to ride too many of these things. Hardcore coaster enthusiasts have often ridden hundreds of them, but it's an expensive and time--consuming hobby and riding them *all* can involve being a glutton for punishment.

When I worked at an Amusement Park as a Rides Operator, I would tell people that the Coaster stayed on the track with Magnets. 😜
11:08 super cool to hear him say this. I rode this in November of 2023 with my gf, not realising at the time that it is the largest transportable rollercoaster in the world! They tend to bring it in for London's Winter Wonderland, as well as a bunch of other neat rides
15:52 RMC has entered the chat
He's definitely asking about Topper Track. Personally I consider a coaster like Outlaw Run at SDC to be a wooden coaster.

Yea I was like, hey! A coaster I’ve actually ridden!
This is the best thing I’ve seen in a while. Keep doing these. Roller coaster FACTS are essential to this world!
Oh and the old Dueling Dragons, rest in peace. That was at Islands of Adventure. But that was a long wait but was a super cool waiting line
Oh man! Dueling Dragons! That use to be my mom's favorite ride but I was too small last time we were at islands of adventure... I didn't realize it was gone! I always wanted to try it. R.I.P.
@@hotarubinariko I haven’t been in probably 14yrs, so a long time but I’m pretty positive it’s Hagrids Motorbike Adventure now, the one he mentioned in this video.

Yessss I have such fond memories of Dueling Dragons rip
I went to Islands of Adventure with my husband and daughter and the only coaster we got to ride was Dueling Dragons, because it later rained and a lot of the others shut down. Did DD twice in a row. (Had to do Fire AND Ice.) Regretted that, but not the ride as a whole. Was great fun.
Hey Korey! I don't know if you'll ever see this, but I decided to go to Oktoberfest today to ride the Olympia Looping after you said it was on your bucket list. It was the first time I have every traveled to a roller coaster and rode it alone, so thank you for getting me outside of my comfort zone. I hope you get to experience it one day!
South African here and that ride is called Tower of Terror and I've never been so scared of a ride in my life.
Olympia is amazing, it was set up in my city around 10 years ago. Expensive to ride, but it's so worth it. Yes, it's portable, but there are very few stationed roller coasters that have 5 loopings! Makes you appreciate it so much more.
Kingda ka is such an awesome roller coaster. Only problem is it’s soo short! Let us go around another time lol. Love 6 flags.
I think if you're lucky it doesn't make the top and you get launched again

Im pretty sure this guy is part of the gravity group. They make awesome wooden coasters! They also retracked the beast

One of my favorite parts of an old school coaster is the slow, noisy climb up the first hill. Kinda like the Magnum XL at Cedar Point back in the early 90’s.

This was so wholesome for some reason. God bless this man!😭
Isn’t the first answer wrong already? Formula Rossa is faster. Could be argued that it is currently SBNO?
True
Some people would consider it SBNO, but since it had a definite closure announcement others could also argue that it's out of the running.
I think it's just a matter of opinion and how you classify it.
If you say that formula rossa is faster even if it is closed, Then why not say the Falcon's flight is the tallest
@@doodledoocg Because it has never opened

The Beast is a beast for sure. I love that ride, but it's been years since I've conquered it. Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio has some of the best wood roller coasters including The Gemini which is a racer roller coaster. We would split between the red car and the blue car to see who would win. Fun times!!
@14:09 did anyone else watching this immediately hear “for those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone…” in their head?
Loved watching this video all the way through. I was a Ride Operator at Worlds of Fun for this season and I had a ton of fun with it. Always wondered what went into making and maintaining rides
The Beast! Absolutely one of the best coasters I've ever ridden. Ride it first in the daytime. Then, ride it again at night and find out that it gets even better!
Great tip! Coasters during day versus at night! Another great is American Eagle at Six Flags Great America. Excellent coasters to close out a trip to those parks. Def try Holiday World coasters if you have the opportunity. Absolute blast!
14:04 block zones are also meant in case the ride needs to be shut down for an emergency, the cars on the track do not crash into each other
0:35 Actually, in Spanish we call roller coasters “Montaña Rusa” (Russian mountain)
Same in Italy

"we designed a roller coaster where you might splashed by the log flume"
Holiday World: "Alright, boys. were removing Pilgrim's Plunge"
He was referring to Cornball Express at Indiana Beach.
@Coaster101 Wasnt even thinking of that cuz its not a Gravity Group....but they are the remnants of CCI so it checks
Very passionate engineer and interesting topic ! Thanks wired
I’m just so scared of roller coaster failures seen bad videos ..
See the right videos, not clickbaitey ones that don’t know what they’re talking about. I recommend Coaster College. Also, 99% of ride failures is actually due to human error, not a machine malfunction.
Rollercoaster accidents are really rare. If you go on one, you will mostly likely be safe, like he mentioned rollercoasters are frequently checked and tested to ensure that they're safe and working properly. Ik many videos make rollercoasters seem unsafe but that's mostly people clickbaiting
